Here it is! PEOPLE Interview Version: Issue VIII PhilipWise
Here it is, JCers, an interview with the one and only Philip Wise, majority owner of the forums.
This week, PEOPLE's man was
PhilipWise
, who because of past controversy has had no fair chance to show his STAR WARS side to people, the non-boss side.
Late this night, I am proud and honored to give you the interview with Mr. Wise.
The questions are about himself, the JC, and real life.
My dialogue is
italicized
;
PhilipWise
's is not.
You saw the first Star Wars at the perfect age to remember it, probably. What was that feeling like? Of watching the Star Destroyer go over the screen and watching the movie? Then walking out of the theater?
I hadn't heard anything about Star Wars until the day I saw it in Houston. We went because of a radio as I heard in a camera store that sounded funny, but interesting. There was such a line, we only barely
made it in the door in time to see the Star Destroyer fly over, missing the opening scroll. I was spellbound and speechless by the end of the movie and like many with me, just wanted to get back in line and see it again. Which I did the next day and the next weekend.
How old are you?
I generally answer as I was 23 when I saw Star Was in 1977, and was full immersed a career at that point, barely finding time to go to any movies.
What's your favorite music from the Star Wars saga?
The Imperial March remains today as my favorite music from all the movies, though a close second is the music behind the final duel between Vader and Luke in Jedi.
How disappointed are you that IGN didn't offer another free-hosting deal for the forums?
Our deal was for five years, and at the end, things had to change. It's disappointing we couldn't find a way we could continue because no matter how hard we work to limit the impact on the community, any interruption
will not be pleasant. There are also good things that will come of it though as
we should manage to get some new features members will like.
When you're not running TFN or Rebelscum.com, what do you do?
If you throw in C2 Ventures, there is nothing but this I'm afraid. I work all day, every day.
Will Revenge of the Sith live up to the hype it's been experiencing ever since the first SW came out back in '77?
Almost everything I've seen sure says it has the best chance of all the
prequels. I am very hopefull and optimistic.
Which SW character are you most like?
Tarkin I think, though I never actually attempted to answer this question before. I like his decision making. Quick and easy.
What SW celebrities (and "VIP"s) have you met? What are they like?
As a byproduct of C2 Ventures, this would be a long list. In general, I have
found the celebrities from Star Wars to be very nice people, with some of them incredibly nice, like Jeremy Bulloch, who sets the standard in my book.
I've heard that you have a family of your own. What are they like?
I have two grown kids. Chris and Amy. My daughter loves Star Wars and computer stuff just like me. My son couldn't care less. It was my daughter
that got me started making a website for Star Wars toy collecting in 1996
when I couldn't find any info online about them. She had me dragging her all
over Dallas looking for the action figures in 1995 at Service Merchandise stores. Though you didn't ask, I also have two English Springer Spaniels,
Lucas and Logan 5, who keep me company all day working out of the house.
Apparently, Astaran has been very helpful to the moderators. Where did you find such a good "forum consultant"?
I was lucky to find Astaran as a consultant on the UBB development forums. He was a significant help in transitioning Rebelscum to UBB Threads and he
continues to deliver amazing customization to the forum software for me.
Have you seen the work-in-progress new boards yet? If yes, do you think the majority of JCers will be satisfied with it?
I haven't followed it because the current JC team and Astaran make a pretty good group to handle the conversion. On a related note, I've been a bit
frustrated with IGN not providing the agreed upon supportfor the move we expected. I'm sure they will, but it's hard when they aren't doing what they said they would do.
The situation that occurred last year was obviously a distressful situation that unsettled everyone on the boards. What, in your view, happened?
The short version is I asked for contact information I have the right to have and didn't realize anybody would not be willing to provide it. That consideration never occurred to me as I couldn't imagine somebody in a job
of such responsibility needing to be anonymous from me. Had I realized this was a possibility I would have built consesus in the leadership to ensure the request was much better understood.
You co-own the site with Joshua Griffin. How did that happen?
TF.N was a company operating without an organization, which wasn't really so good. Scott asked me to join in and sort that out. On doing so, the company
was organized into a LLC with three partners, Josh, Scott and myself. Often, a full partnership has a difficult time reaching consensus, and that was
happening to us, so I offered to buy Scott out and he agreed. I own 2/3 and Josh owns 1/3, but it's not like there's any money being made on the site.
Quite the opposite is happening, but fundamentally, I just pa
What ventures do you think Lucasfilm and George Lucas will make after finishing Star Wars and Indy IV? Will there be a sequel trilogy? Or a t.v.
show depicting the events between Episodes III and IV?
Everything I hear is live action TV, and I'm pretty stoked about the
possibility.
What, in your opinion, is the best forum on the boards?
In my book, the 3SA is the most topical and interesting.
I know you're involved with C2 Ventures, and will be presenting the
autograph program at Celebration III again. What can you tell me about
that:
Well, it will be much bigger than the program was at C2. We had 34 actors three years ago in 8,000 sq ft and this time we will have over 40, and will fully occupy Hall A, which is about 45,000 sq ft. We will have several hundred volunteers as well, which we expect to be up to the task of ensuring all the autograph seekers have a pleasant experience. We are just about over
the hump getting everything ready for the show, including about 120 images which will be available for purchase as well.
Do you like TFN's new look?
I'm not in love with the look. Its fundamental design was driven by the desire to get MUCH MORE news on the page, which it accomplishes. I wish it looked more Star Wars-ish, but when we designed it we were intensely
worried Lucasfilm would not allow any Star Wars graphics. Though, while they have
been very difficult to work with, at least that kind of restriction hasn't happened. If it wasn't such a massive and huge effort to tinker with it,
would. In time we will change it, though I don't see anything happening before the movie.
What do you think of spin-off sites and forums such as millenniumfalcon.com replacing the JC as the SW Spoiler king of the internet? Are they stealing
the JC's thunder? Or is the JC impaired of it's true spoiling ability because of Lucasfilm breathing down its neck?
I'm all about seeing the spoilers and though I respect the decisions by Lucasfilm to crack down on it, it is incredibly disappointing to receive fan mail from loyal readers who miss the days when we were their source of
this kind of information.
You reportedly have a massive collection of SW toys and memorabilia. Tell us about it. What are the "trophies" of your collection?
I do have a pretty significant collection, though most of it is currently in
storage occupying most of a 4,000 sq ft warehouse. My favorite items nowdays
are my collection of Master Replicas prop replicas. Individual items I like
a lot would also include my prototype rocket Boba Fett I purchased from a lady that worked at Kenner back in the day. She reached into a box full of them and pulled out two, as anybody working a that warehouse could of
at the time. Amazing.
Rebelscum.com is quite a site. What's the history behind it?
As I mentioned earlier, it really started because there wasn't a good place to find out about the new Kenner toys. I wanted to learn about the web and I liked taking photos, so I built to show off the toys and write about what I was finding at the stores. Very soon people starting writing to tell me what they found, and it just kind of went crazy from that. There is a team
of 13 very dedicated collectors running the site and it's very much a destination for Star Wars collectors online.
What is the most impactful thing about Star Wars?
To me, it's all about how it brings people together with a similar understanding of good and evil. The only confusing part is how it's ok
to kiss your sister. :-)
How has Star Wars changed you? How do you think it has change the
world?
I don't think Star Wars changed me so much, but it sure changed what I was doing for several years. Changed the world? I sure know a lot of people that avoid heading down the dark side because they know it's bad, having
learned that simple lesson from Star Wars. That's got to have an impact.
What of the future will still be impacted by this operatic saga? How long will it be remembered?
It made it through 20 years between trilogys, and there were a lot of dark days in there. If it can make it past Jar Jar, it will be a saga long remembered.
And, lastly, how long do you think TFN will remain up in the internet world? And the JC? What's in store for it? What do you predict is the "next" thing?
I really can't imagine TFN, nor the forum going away after the movie. I think we will continue to concentrate on what fans tell us they want. I
don't really have any "next thing" plans past the movie, though I am looking forward to slowing down a bit and spending time in my wood shop building some furniture projects I have been putting off.
That's it! I hope it was informative.
Next Week for PEOPLE, Issue IX: Either
Jedi_Satimber
or
Jedi_Master_Ousley
I recently lost my hard drive and I didn't have my PEOPLE docu backed up so I lost my interview waiting list so if you know for a fact you were due for week 9, PM me and refresh my memory. Also, if you know you're on the waiting list at all, tell me in this thread and I'll get the list corrected.
Thanks for reading. Hope you enjoyed the interview.

That was great, makes things seem better on a cosmic scale - or something. I still wish Philip Wise would post a bit more, but, oh well. Great work Coruscant!
