A different kind of Movie topic . . .
As I'm sure everyone knows, the American Film Institute put out a list of the top 100 movies of all time a few years back. I'm looking to gather some opinion on the movies on the list, so if you like discussing or debating movies come here as I will be clocking through this list at the rate of one movie at a time. When discussion runs out, I'll post another for discussion. also expect spoilers.
#100
Yankee Doodle Dandy starring James Cagney:
This movie clocks in at two hours and six minutes. It won an Oscar for the song and dance routines. It was released in 1942.
My opinion: A very good movie. A lot of fun to watch the guy that smashes grapefruits in Public Enemy dancing around and singing. Might be a tad long, but that's a slight nitpick. AS I mentioned, Cagney is very good and so is the actor who plays his father. Gets the patriotic blood flowing in your veins (sorry, all you Aussies). And of course, even better since it is true. A good biopic with some very cool scenes, like Cagney dancing down the stairs at the end ( adlibbed by the way), and the death scene.
Final Verdict: Recommended.
Well, anyone up for some discussion about the classics?

I agree. Yankee Doodle Dandy was one heck of a film, if for nothing else than to prove that Cagney was more than just a gangster.
I remember watching it with my parents when I was a kid, and it was my first introduction to such greats as "Over There" and "My father thanks you, my mother thanks you, etc."

I think I almost cried when he does the "my father thanks you," at the end.
Now, Barefoot Contessa wasn't on the list. A lot of movies got cheated in my opinion. That's part of the feelings I want to hear. Movies that should have been on the list, but weren't.

I liked "The Barefoot Contessa". I'm not sure if it should've been on the list (hell, I don't remember what was), but it was good. And most people haven't heard of it.

Cagney started out as a hoofer and female impersonator on Broadway, believe it or not. He also played Cohan in another movie--"The Seven Little Foys."
The movie is entertaining, but of its time. Which means it's sentimental and hokey in the extreme. Cagney just about damn well redeems it, though. The section they show from "I'd Rather Be Right" (Cohan's last Broadway play) is the best part, IMO.

You really ought to rent it. Sure, it's a bit hokey, but so are parts of Casablanca (not many parts, though, let me tell ya).

Please feel free to continue discussion of YDD if there is anything left to be said, but just to shake things up I'll add the next movie.
#99: Guess Who's Coming to Dinner starring Spencer Tracy and Sidney Poitier
This unrated movie clocks in at one hour and forty-eight minutes. It was released in 1967 and won two Academy Awards. William Rose won best origanal story and screenplay and Katherine Hepburn took home Best Actress.
My opinion: A very good movie for several reasons. A stunning cast with several good performances. It drags a bit in the midsection, but again a minor quibble. The highlight of the film to me is Spencer Tracy's brilliant monologue at the end of the film about love, life and everything. Katherine Hepburn says that she can't watch this movie because that particular monologue breaks her up so badly. Understandable, perfectly understandable. Also, one must respect a film that has an agenda and unapologetically pursues it.
Final Verdict: Worth watching, mainly for Tracy's monologue.
Discussion?

Never saw it, but anything with Tracy in it is worth watching.

I never saw the whole thing, but I love Hepburn and Tracy together. (Separately, Hepburn kinda bugs me, but she was always great with Tracy. Oh, and in The Lion in Winter.)
It's a wonderful premise and I think it started a lot of dialogue about love and race relations.

Actually, I've never been a big fan of Hepburn's either. Her voice kind of bugs me. But she was in some really great movies.

It wasn't just her voice that got me (although that was a big part of it). There's something about her acting that's a little grating. It works really well if that's the character, but otherwise I think it gets old. I agree, though, can't think of a single one of the movies she was in that I hated.

On the Waterfront is # 7, if memory serves me. It's definatly in the top ten. I don't have the list in front of me now, so that's a guess.
