Won't be able to get around to "Bounty" until tonight when everyone else sees it. Got it the other night but it was getting late and I doubt my boss would look too kindly upon me coming in late because I was reviewing Enterprise.

This ENT duo reminds me of that Fallen Hero/Desert Crossing pair back in the first season. Like that one, the preceeding episode here turned out to be the better episode.

All in all, I have to say ENT went back to it's par-level for First Flight and Bounty; it really struck me as just filler and fluf prior to the The Expanse.

My thoughts on the episodes:

The Bad:
  • A pretty conventional plot line for First Flight, nothing really surprising due to it being a flash-back story with the outcome already known. Other than that, nothing really sticks out at me as being really glaring.

  • Why didn't Captain Robinson get the Shenandoah instead of Duval?

  • Trip just kinda stood there with his head cocked during his out-burst in the hanger. Not exactly the best work by Trinnier, but his magnamity of execution pulled through for him.

[li]I'm not a real big fan of the new-Tellarites. The noses were a bit more generic, and not striking me as having the piggish aura TOS-Tellarites had. My memory of Journey to Babel is a bit shady, but I can remember that Tellarite ambassador being a bit more gruff than this guy.

  • Archer got captured again and was soon back to his preachy ways. I guess he got bored.

  • T'pol....enough said. I half-expected a swerve to have her break Reed's faceplate and infect him as she would kiss him. How is it that I can think of that stuff, but TPTB can't?

  • I'm not sure if Vulcan females can go through pon farr or not, but at any rate, Bounty's B-plot was just a sexual throw-out for the adolescent males.

  • The practice of reusing sets for maximum value continues. They just reworked the transport set from Regeneration for Goroth's ship.

    [li]Phlox's BUFF BOD.

  • The Good:

  • Great The Right Stuff feel to First Flight. The old-school camraderie between the pilots was certainly reminiscient of the Mercury program, and paid off very well. Great work by Black.

  • Barfight, Archer breaking orders, Trip/Archer friendship formation.

  • Great SFX

  • Shoot-out scene was pretty cool. Again, ENT periodically suceeds in its action-driven episodes and scenes.

  • Overall:

  • First Flight: 84%

  • [li]Bounty: 72%

Well, next week is the season finale. Who knows how this will turn out?

I thought both episodes were pretty good. I enjoyed First Flight the most. It was a good look at the history of the Warp 5 program. The episode boasted another great fistfight. I liked the character of A.G. Robinson (this is the real name of Andrew Robinson, the actor who played Garek on DS9) and I'm sorry he won't be coming back. Hopefully we'll get to see those two other officers Archer talked about, Duvall and Gardener.

Speaking of which, there was some good continuity used in this episode. Gardener has been mentioned before. In Shadows of P'Jem, Ambassador Soval mentioned he would have been a more fitting captain for the Enterprise. It would be cool to see a Vulcan-backed Starfleet Captain in future episodes. Duval was mentioned in Silent Enemy (to the disbelief of Archer and Trip) as being given command of the Shenandoah. Ruby was mentioned by both Trip and Reed in Shuttlepod One.

It was good to see Admiral Forest be utilized more and I liked how it was T'Pol helping out Archer this time.

I agree with what Wattowatta said about the episode being a little too predictable. The look at Archer and Trip's friendship was nice though I would have liked to have seen more. I give it a B+.

Bounty was good. It was nice to see the Klingon storyline brought back and it's even better to see them in a more villianous role. Welcome back to Star Trek, Tellarites! I think the make-up could have been a little better but it still beats the original. The bounty hunter the Klingons sent after Archer was played by Robert O'Reilly, who played Gowron on TNG and DS9. I liked the main bounty hunter played by Jordan Lund.

Complaints...first, I'm sick of these non-lethal space battles we see. The Enterprise rarely, if ever has destroyed an alien craft. So much for space being so dangerous. Also, T'Pol's subplot was completely useless. She says that Vulcans rarely discuss pon farr. However, she had no problem mentioning to Archer and Trip that Vulcans mate every seven years in "Fallen Hero." Even worse, the sight of Phlox without his shirt on is a horrying sight. That was one underwear shot no one wanted to see.

I'm cautiously optimistic for The Expanse.

EDIT: BTW, there's a rumor going around that Enterprise might be moved to Tuesday to avoid going up against Smallville.

First Flight was a great episode, although you'd think that stealing a prototype warp spacecraft would get you kicked out of Starfleet, even if you did get the thing to work.

A few problems with The Bounty:

"Do you think the Klingons will figure out that you gave me a lockpick?" Uh, I'm thinking yes.

Okay, lets go into the decon chamber and strip down...except for our private areas.

Will we ever get away from the Original Series 1960s cheesey casual sexual tones? First it was officers in miniskirts. Then empaths in low-cut dresses. Now Vulcans wearing catsuits. (Where are the Vulcan robes that everyone else seems to be wearing?) I bet Starfleet doctors are pretty adept at treating the clap by this point.

NEXT EPISODE: Earth is directly attacked and millions die. Funny how between all the series and movies we never heard about this before.

I also wanted to add that Scott Bakula's performance in First Flight was very good. His grief of Robinson's death was very sincere.

He fell off Mt. McKinely. Forrest called Archer about it at the beginning of the episode.

laugh

He survived the first Warp 3 flight, almost was the captain of the first Warp 5 STARSHIP, and ended up falling off a mountain? What a loser.

First Flight was very good. ENT needs to do more episodes just like it: early deep space program, gritty Starfleet officers who are really still astronauts breaking the rules. Carradine was nothing short of terrific, Bakula's performance was much better and it was a treat to see him and Trip meet. No wonder Jon loves the guy; the first time he laid eyes on Trip he defended Henry's engine. I continue to be impressed by the Bakula/Trinneer chemistry.

Bounty was puerile crap. I can think of dozens of scenarios in which T'Pol reveals that she's noticed Malcolm's attraction to her that aren't full of sleaze and don't strip her character of all dignity. Please. Write off the character. She's nothing but a masturbatory fantasy for little boys. Notice that, even when it was patently ridiculous that Trip was running around half clothed in "Acquisition" he had a mission--to save Jon and the ship. When T'Pol runs around barely dressed (all sweaty and undulating) her mission is to get laid. Funny how Spock managed to keep on his clothes during Pon Farr. angry Oh, and how lovely the Bounty Hutner turned out to be all nicey nice nice nice. Who was he? Greg Brady in a pig mask?

Having one-third of earth wiped out by a new enemy is such a rip-off (with modifications) of B5 Crusade. Something more original would have been nice. That being said I loved First Flight. I think more time should be spent on the early growth of Starfleet. Perhaps the establishiment of shipyards, tech improvements (shields, faster warp engines), expansion of the fleet to more than 1 ship, etc.

Enterprise will and forever suck it hard. I don't know what the writers were on, but ANY group that goes against not one, but *two* lines of history written in TNG deserves shame and banishment. Earth/the Federation did not have First Contact with the Ferengi until TNG. Earth/the Federation did not know about the Borg until TNG.

Watching last night's episode "Bounty" it shows you just how far these pon farr episodes have fallen. On TOS, Amok Time was one of the best episodes in all of Trek. It told the story of friendship between Kirk and Spock and it was handled with dignity, unlike "Bounty." Spock wasn't going around trying to sleep with everyone (thankfully) but trying to maintain a rising fire within him.

I have always thought it was a great idea, to go back to the beginning of the Federation. However the more eps of Ent. I watch the less faith I have in the whole idea. Still liked First Flight though.

The beginning of the Federation is a good idea but it's been executed poorly by the Hack Brothers.
