Bless the Broken Road - L/M songfic
Title: Bless the Broken Road
Genre: Angst, songfic
Characters: Luke Skywalker, Mara Skywalker
Time: Pre-NJO
Author: AnakinsHeir
A/N: Inspired by the song
Bless the Broken Road
by Rascal Flatts.
Bless the Broken Road
I set out on a narrow way many years ago
Hoping I would find true love along the broken road
But I got lost a time or two
Wiped my brow and kept pushing through.
The road to true love was paved with broken hearts and shattered dreams.
Luke had arrived at that conclusion years ago.
That road had often left him broken and bleeding, a shell of the man he thought he was. But looking back, he saw that all of his pain and heartache had brought him to her.
And her love made all of the previous hurts worth it.
She
made all of that seem so distant that he could barely recall the man who despaired of ever finding love.
Here, so close to her and enjoying the warmth of her skin touching his, he knew that he would gladly walk that road again to come to this moment with her.
Closing his eyes, he savored the touch of his wife’s signature through the Force.
He was home.
I couldn't see how every sign pointed straight to you
Every long lost dream lead me to where you are
Others who broke my heart they were like northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you.
Gariel had been the first.
She had been the first woman to touch his heart in any meaningful way. It was as he looked in her eyes that he had first imagined children running around with her eyes and his smile.
And though they had not been destined to be together, she had opened a door.
With the opening of that door, he had opened his heart to all the possibilities of love. And loss.
This willingness to risk his heart had not come without a price. He had paid for it with the agony of losing one he loved. But even the act of losing love was an affirmation of it.
Callista had broken the heart that dared to love her.
But he could hold no bitterness toward her, because even that heartbreak had kept his feet on this path, the road that led to Mara.
So he could do nothing else except treasure the memory of those who had touched his heart before.
Their faces and names were not trifles to be brought out daily, but treasures to be put away with fondness for a life that was gone now.
I think about the years I spent just passing through
I'd like to have the time I lost and give it back to you
But you just smile and take my hand
You've been there you understand
It's all part of a grander plan that is coming true.
There were moments when the faces of those long dead would visit him in his sleep. They floated past him; Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen, the unfathomable face of his mother, the resigned face of his father.
Most of the time, they would merely sweep by briefly, as if to check on him. A quick smile, the touch of a hand that had long since turned to dust or ash, and they would be on their way.
They meant him no harm, for they had all loved him in their own way. But his guilt would choke him, and he longed to beg for their forgiveness for some imagined hurt.
As he tossed in his turmoil, facing those he had lost, he would find comfort in the anchoring security of Mara’s embrace.
Even in sleep, he reached out for her, knowing she represented a haven that could not be breached by any ghost.
Mara was his destiny, the missing piece which made him whole. Unknowingly, he had been waiting just for her.
The specters of his past could not stand firm in the face of Mara’s love. In her arms, even he could find peace.
The journey was not without a price.
But his broken road, which had led him through heartache and fear, had brought him home.
So for that reason he must bless the broken road.

Haven't heard the song, but it was a beautiful fic all the same. Loved the ending, with Mara being Luke's sanctuary from ghosts of the past. I really liked the style of the whole story - kind of gentle and sad but joyful at the same time. If that makes sense to anyone other than me...
I remember reading your 'Heroes have the right to dream' as well (can't remember if I posted or not) and that was a great story too. Can't wait to see more from you.

And what it all comes down to is that I haven't got it figured out just yet.
Would I rather be feared or loved? Um... Easy, both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me.
Persia pwns your face.
