Part I: "Warriors of Obligation"

Emperor's Retreat, Naboo:
_______________________________________________________

Naboo was amongst the galaxies most resplendent planets, ornate with wonderous architecture, extravagant colors on numerous types of flora, and people of many sorts bound together by a past and for a future enriched with the glorious Nabooian culture.

Until the dark times...

Until the Emperor...

Whereever Palpatine went, darkness surely followed; and on Naboo, in the plains of Kadaaras, the darkness had swelled around his Nabooian fortress like winds in a funnel cloud, hindering the sky...

____________________________/\
Sitting on his throne, palms rested on each arm rest, he set his worn, bloodshot eyes upon one of his greatest instruments of tyranny and order...

Mara Jade, the most lethal of his heinous Hands.

"Rise, young one." The Emperor commanded, his voice rippling with a sickening coarseness that, without a doubt, had been due to the abrasion of his body brought about by his Dark powers.

Jade's face was blank of emotion as she rose from her kneeling position.

When she was in the presence of Palpatine, her face seemed to have been a mask over anything that made her human; and this is how she wanted it. She took pride in it. Her lot in life and her ambitions were to be an extension of her master's destruction and nothing more.

"I felt the strenuousness of your training, earlier." Palpatine leaned forward; the intensity of his eyes grew as he widened the gaze set upon her.

"Could this mean you are not content with the levels of difficulty of the missions i have given unto you?"

"I am an instrument of your bidding, master. I'd surrender my life to you the moment you requested it." Mara Jade's tone was never wavering.

"Ah," Palpatine's face shifted into some sick humorous smile. "But your life is all ready a possesion of mine, young one!"

"This is so, master."

Palpatine's spread his rough lips, unveiling his withered teeth, giving her a maniacal grin, which he then set into a wicked and mischievious gaze.

Calling upon the Force with much ease, Palpatine extended one pale and wrinkled finger, calling forth his cane to his palm. He then leaned forward, slowly rising from his chair.

"Walk with me, child."

Mara turned on her heel. With her arms set neatly behind her back, she followed Palpatine, heading down the long bridge that led to the exit of his chambers.

"There is a band of mercenary scum that has been arming and training locals on the planet Saego. The locals have led a successful take-over on one of MY Imperial bases." Palpatine turned his lowered head to Mara's direction. "I would normally send a regiment of my finest troopers to tear at heart of the enemy, but I believe the mission at hand would be best complete with assistance from Underworld powers..." As Palpatine and Jade neared the exit, Palpatine summoned the Force to open the door.

The door slid open revealing to Mara Jade the greatest bounty hunter to ever bear the iconic Mandalorian armor: Boba Fett.

"And there is no greater power in the criminal underworld than Boba Fett." Palpatine finished.

Still the image of nothingness, Jade's face did not reveal her to be impressed; and she wasnt.

"You will assist Boba Fett in destroying the locals who have taken over my Imperial base on Saego and you will also destroy the soldiers who trained the locals to do so." Palpatine turned his head from Jade and now looked to Boba Fett.

"I trust you will not fail me?" Palpatine asked.

Fett returned the gesture, turning and looking to Palpatine, showing no fear -If Fett even carried such an emotion.

"Failure is never a factor." His cold mechanical voice sent shivers to the Imperial private whom unfortunately happened to walk by.

Jade turned on her heel to stand by Fett, now casting her disciplined stare upon Palpatine.

Palpatine raised his withered finger at Boba Fett "It had better not be, Bounty Hunter." He said, stepping from the two, he entered his chambers.

The Slave 1
Many hours later...
______________________________________________________

The consistent humming of the Slave 1's engines was a silent and lulling sound that helped to ease Mara in her meditation; yet, throughout the several hours she patiently engaged in meditation, stretching out throughout the ship with the Force and feeling the loneliness of space, she couldn’t help but wonder what it was that felt so familiar about that armor or that enigmatic presence she knew she had felt once before.

It was an odd feeling to say the least; the presence had made her feel violated somehow. It was as if she remembered its significance but had forgotten it because something condemned her to remember.

She slowly opened her eyes, unveiling to herself through emerald green sights that shell of a man encased in the dark green remnants of a faded culture.

Mara rose from her meditative position to her feet; her shuffling had no doubt made noise, but, Boba Fett didn’t budge from what he was doing.

Her lips slightly parted, inhaling lightly. Her curiosity more than her evident boredom made her want to get near him.

She eased herself into the passenger's chair diagonal from him, tilting her head curiously while she glanced at him as he worked.

Fett ran his gloved fingers expertly across the Slave 1's HUD. From what Mara could tell, he seemed to be double-checking for any activity within the perimeter.

Her patience wasn’t wearing thin, but she knew that Boba Fett wouldn’t be much of a talker; and, if they were going to do this mission as partners, they'd need to develop some sort of communication between one another.

"You're a hell of a conversationalist, Fett."

"I'm not paid enough to be one." Fett coldly replied with an accent that was foreign to her ears.

She rolled her eyes, mumbling quietly underneath her breath. "Well, I just hope when we're in trouble you can communicate through sign language..."

"I know various forms of sign language."

She quirked her eyebrow curiously, wondering how he could have heard her at such a distance; but, Fett tapped his helmet as if to say I can hear everything, replying to her query.

Jade was impressed; yet, she of course wouldn’t show it.

The Slave 1 cruised through space, reflecting the remarkable pink colors of a glittering nebula. Though space was the most dangerous place to be in Fett's eyes, he still marveled at its vastness and beauty to himself -as he once did as a boy.

Mara peered over the empty seat in front of her, taking in the sights of a planet that seemed to resemble Tatooine's...charm; but, as she peered closer, she realized that Fett had taken her to a system that had been remote to her knowledge.

Boba Fett's helmet antenna lowered over the helmet’s black visor; and, from what she could tell, it was in preparation for landing on the planet.

"Where are we going?" Jade raised her eyebrow, turning her head to him.

"Thats on a need-to-know basis."

"We're partners..."

"Not friends." Fett reached for a panel up above his head and pulled it down, beginning the landing sequence.

Mara Jade wondered how far her patience would take her before she needed to wring his neck; then, she reminded herself that this was for the Emperor and that she would sacrifice whatever she could to fulfill his desires...even her sanity.

When i wrote this story, i didnt have a direct idea of where i wanted to go with it. I just thought that i could create some memorable dialogue with Boba Fett and Mara Jade together and that through the combination of these two great characters, something really good could come from it.

I'm going to change a few things in my first post to make it more interesting and to set it up for the awesome scene i have planned, so please bear with me...you will not be disappointed.

Slave Ship:
Part II: "We'll never trust one another..."
_____________________________________________________

Mara beheld the clouds in the bright blue sky soar upward just outside of her window as the ship descended downward for landing; feeling inertia tug at her stomach as well as the rest of her body.

Mara leaned her head inquisitively above the HUD to see exactly where they were landing. She saw a large base and that the Slave 1 was heading towards a massive door; which opened up from underground in the middle of the base. She also noted a large satellite dish rising from another opening in the ground that rotated slowly in a clockwise direction.

So Fett doesn’t work solo? This entire base cant belong to just him...

The cockpit remained as it was, yet the rest of the body of the Slave 1 slowly aligned itself with the ground and soon the view port window started to slide over her head making a loud mechanical wheeze.

Mara felt the ship touch land, the force of it rocked her lightly. She looked up through the view port, fastening her eyes at the bright sky above. Then the huge doors began to close overhead, blocking the sky out.

The entire cockpit slowly rotated on its axis towards the ship's exit in a half-circle and the emergency lights then switched on.

As the exit ramp lowered itself, Jade saw Fett quickly undo his seat belt and so she decided to do so as well, thumbing the red button.

She began to get up, but then Boba Fett stood directly in front of her.

"As soon as you exit this ship, you'll keep your hands to yourself and you'll stay close to me." Fett lowered his hand, turning his back to her.

"Where are we?" Jade said, brushing off the growing irritation for Fett that had been undoubtedly growing the minute she shared dialogue with him.

Fett sighed quietly, turning his face up and then forward, irritated with the question. He seldom explained himself to anyone; but he came to the conclusion that he'd have to fill her in with some information or else she'd REALLY become annoying.

"This is my base of operations."

"Why are we here? What the hell planet are we on?"

"That is irrelevant." Fett quickly replied. "What you do need to know is that I’ve formulated a plan that will help us find the Death Watch."

"The Death Watch?" Mara knitted her brow curiously.

"The Death Watch." Boba Fett stood and turned to her.

Either Fett didn’t know she wanted him to elaborate or he just didn’t care to and thought staring at her impatiently through his T-shaped visor would get her to shut up.

It didn’t.

"Would you like to explain?"

"Negative." Fett turned and walked away, heading down the exit ramp, his cape blowing in the wind as he passed over an air vent.

Mara ran her slender fingers through her red-gold hair; she was slightly frustrated to say the least, yet, she wouldn’t let it show.

Why wouldn’t he tell her anything?

Mara shrugged, "He won’t break me down..." She said, lifting her cargo bag over her right shoulder, heading down the ramp.
_____________________________________________________

As she exited the Slave 1, adoring the feeling of having finally gotten to stretch her legs out, she was almost startled at how massive the place was. She was surrounded by large computers that glowed several different colors in the darkness and droids of all types moved past her like a city of people on their own agenda. There were Holo banners that moved all around the underground base, which updated Fett on the latest bounties. It was almost as if it were a city dedicated to the career of Boba Fett, but that would have been an over exaggerated view.

She managed to close her ruby red lips and then thought to herself "This is what sheer devotion looks like." She was impressed.

"So this is where you take all of your dates, Fett?" Mara Jade said, hurrying up beside Fett.

Boba Fett continued walking; and, by the way he sped up his walk, he seemed to be ignoring her.

Jade could only smirk inwardly, matching his pace.

The two were heading towards a massive holoscreen that gave bounty information from several different planets; as far as Mara, who squinted her eyes to see, could make out.

Boba Fett wasnt so boring after all.

Continuation of Part II
_______________________________________________________

They descended down a large rusty staircase, their footsteps making small audible clanks before they stepped into a room, which seemed to be the main control area of Boba Fett's hideout.

She passed by a few holo projectors that had shown the faces of rapists, murderers, noble farmers, mercenaries, defected Imperial officers, etc.

Boba Fett continued forward, moving up a narrow set of stairs that led directly up to his control room. He rested his hands firmly on the edges of his computer, looking down and then back at the massive viewscreen in front of him.

Jade looked around, the fascination was there, but she hadn’t shown it through her facial expressions. Jade shook out of her amazement, realizing she had lost Boba Fett.

Fett began dancing his fingers along the control panel, opening up a file titled "Death Watch". The file had shown the dreaded visage of Mandalorian Death Watchmen armor.

A loud voice overhead startled Mara, but then she realized it was just Fett over an intercom as she rose her head to glance at him.

"This is the Death Watch. The mercenary group that has been arming and training locals on Saego, according to my off world sources." Fett turned to look at Mara.

From where she stood, viewing the large holo projector, she observed the Death Watch information, taking in the image of her future enemy.

Fett turned his back to her, typing quickly on the control panel. The viewscreen changed from the image of Death Watch armor, to an image of a badly scarred man dressed in the same armor, but with a different pattern that seemed more formal of a leader.

"This is the leader of the Death Watch: Graid."

"Where do we find him?" Mara asked, now standing directly behind Boba Fett.

Fett switched off the intercom, turning around to face her.

"Despite my sincerest efforts, I can’t find him, or the Death Watch. Thats why I'm going to lead them here."

"Lead them here? Why?" Mara was surprised. He had obviously worked hard to build this place, why would he allow the Death Watch to come and destroy it? Most of all, why would he want to risk someone else finding out where this base was. Even more troubling, why had he let her come to his personal hideout?

"Thats on an N.T.K." Fett turned to look at her. "What you DO need to know is that we have a few days before the Death Watch show up." Boba Fett turned his head from her, continuing his work.

What Fett was telling her was ludicrous! They were going to battle both the Death Watch AND a militia on Saego?

She sighed, retrieving all of her strength. "Do you have a refresher?"

Fett remained silent but she did notice his helmet antenna twitch slightly.

Then, a protocol droid stepped up to her. "Right this way, ma'am."

Jade was getting tired of Boba Fett not telling her anything; she felt like some child or some sort of a burden that had to be carried on someone's back. She wanted to make sure this mission was in the hands of the Emperor, but she couldn’t do that if she didn’t know what the hell was going on.

The protocol droid turned to her. "I must say, I am most excited that master Fett has brought along a female companion!"

"I’m not his female companion, you rust bucket!"

"Oh...dear me." The protocol droid shut his mouth, continuing to lead her down to the refresher and what would be her room for a few days.

Part III: "Remember the face of your father and kill with your heart." - Stephen King’s "The Gunslinger"

Boba Fett's Hideout: ???
______________________________________________________

Mara Jade entered the refresher. The first thing she looked for was a mirror, to see how the day had treated her.

Yet she hadnt found one...

Mara stood in front of the sink, and resting her chin on her hand, wondering where the mirror could have been. She then ran her slender fingers along the wall and then took a glance to the lower right hand corner, seeing a shard of what had to have been a piece of the refresher mirror.

Did Boba Fett have it removed? She couldn’t help but wonder.

______________________________________________________
Several hours later...
______________________________________________________

Boba Fett was alone...

His droids, Mara, and even the animals outside, were asleep; or so he presumed.

Boba Fett seldom slept. But when he did sleep, it was never without a restless battle with his inner demons.

"When will this end?" Fett spoke the four words that wouldn’t leave him ever since his fifteenth birthday; that was the day he questioned his lineage.

Fett slid his helmet off of his head, taking in some of the air that he desperately needed to sooth his conscience.

He looked at the dark T-shaped visor and saw his father's stern gaze stare back at him.

Is this why I never remove my helmet? He asked himself.

Boba exhaled, carrying his helmet in between his side and his arm; he headed down to the storage area.

_____________
Meanwhile....
_____________

This HAD to be a place Boba Fett -a man with less a personality than a rock- could live in. The "guest room" the protocol droid had directed her to was simply a blank room with a small refresher and a hard pad that she assumed she was supposed to sleep on.

Mara Jade would instead meditate…

She sat in an Indian style position, her palms faced up and her chin and neck were aligned neatly. She reached out with the Force, feeling all around the base.

Feeling...pain...resentment...love?

Boba Fett?

She was feeling Boba Fett's feelings.
____________________________________________________

Boba entered the large storage room, moving past stacked boxes, weaponry, and artillery. He then stopped in front of a door.

He removed his gloves, feeling his calloused hands for the first time in months, and felt around the wall. Feeling a hollow spot on the wall, he tapped it twice and a panel slid open.

He rested his fingertips on the DNA scanner and the door opened, showing nothing but darkness.

Then, seconds later, a spotlight on the floor of the small room switched on, revealing the legendary armor of Jango Fett.

Boba helplessly collapsed to one knee, resting his hand on his forehead, kneeling before his father's ancient battle armor. This was the first time in several years that he had set his eyes upon his father's true image.

After several minutes, he summoned the strength to rise from his feet, looking at his face in the reflection on the belly plate of Jango's silver armor as he rose.

Behind a stack of boxes, Mara Jade watched Boba Fett and realized that that bounty hunter wasnt any worse than she was.

She quickly removed the thought from her head.

The Emperor might have been watching...
