Letters to Coruscant
My dearest Atirya,
This will be my last message for what may be a long time. I have been assigned to a mission of great importance to the Empire. I cannot tell you the details, of course, since it is classified information. I will say that, when completed, it will help bring peace to the galaxy.
I can see you smiling your wry smile or shaking your head as you read these lines. I can hear you saying that it is not our right to force peace on others. You are probably thinking that I have been brainwashed by Imperial Intelligence, the same way I believe you have been by your friends. (Of course, I agree that Pitor and Natal are wonderful people. Even if they do come from a crazy planet that has thrown away all its weapons.)
However, I must point out again that you have never actually met aliens. I have. And believe me, they are foul creatures. I know we have had this argument before. I know you are going to say I cannot expect the best of those who are treated like animals. My response is as it has always been: a truly noble people should be able to retain their dignity even in the worst of times. The aliens I have seen are not. Many are mere animals that only understand violence and the threat of pain. The others are so servile they make me wretch. If you could see them, I have no doubt you would not find them worth defending.
I am sorry I cannot have this argument with you in real time, but I do not have the time to get to Coruscant and I cannot afford hypercomm on my pay grade. I look forward to seeing you again when I return. Then we can argue all we want. Until then, please refrain from running off to join the Rebels.
Yours to command,
Ganesh Shah

My dearest Atirya,
By now you have probably heard about Alderaan. If you are still viewing the holonews networks that you are so fond of, then you will know that the world was destroyed when the Rebels' seismic weapon went out of control.
You have been told lies.
I know because I was there when it happened. I was flying with my squadron as part of a routine patrol flight. My sensors detected a great surge in power from the space station. For a few seconds I was afraid something disasterous had happened to the power core, that a meltdown was about to happen. Then I saw the turbolasers fire. I saw them strike the planet. I saw Alderaan explode. I remember thinking to myself, this has got to be a dream. But it was not.
The debriefing was short. None of us knew what was safe to say. Our commanding officer told us the Rebels were responsible. He was careful with his words, saying nothing that flatly contradicted what we saw. He did not come out and say that we did not see the turbolasers fire. We did not challenge his lies, unspoken and otherwise.
We were cowards. All of us.
I doubt that these words will ever reach you. In fact, I will probably erase them from my datapad as soon as I finish writing, if not before. I can no longer trust the men I once trusted my life with on an everyday basis. Lately I have felt the need to watch my words and actions lest they betray my true emotions. Doubtless my comrades-in-lies are feeling the same pressures.
In my previous letter I wrote lofty words about nobility in the face of adversity. I must now admit that they were said by someone who had never been in a truly dangerous situation before. Until now I have never known what it is to live in fear.
Just a couple of hours ago I had a conversation with Gupta, my wingman. We talked about the Rebellion and how they were worse than Hutts. Gupta said that Bail Organa must have been a criminal with connections to Black Sun. I agreed, saying his daughter Leia was nothing more than a prostitute who used her body to corrupt good men.
The horrible thing is how easily those lies came to me. And I shall continue saying awful things just so I do not attract their suspicions. Perhaps in time I will come to believe them.
I no longer believe in the Empire or the New Order. I cannot even trust myself.
If we ever meet again - and I am torn between hoping we will and praying desperately that we will not - I hope you will be able to recognize me. I hope you will find me worth arguing with.
Forever yours,
Ganesh Shah
P.S.
Please forward my apologies to Pitor and Natal.

Nice work, lazykbys. I really like the contrasting tone between the two letters.

In a story like this, I figure that contrast is everything. So I pushed one end lower and one end higher, and thus these letters were written.
Thank you for reading!
