Deep Freeze

Keeping accurate and up-to-date maps of Coruscant is an impossible job. At any given time there are at least one hundred construction droids tearing down and rebuilding entire districts. Power lines are constantly being rerouted in favor of a more efficient or profitable matrix. The sewage recycling system alone takes a small army of bureaucrats and droids to maintain. Add to this the fact that the lower levels have never been fully explored, and what you get is a thankless job that gets assigned as a punishment.

Wedge Antilles was not one of those unlucky cartographers. However, after a week of poking his head into the forgotten remains of what had once been underground dwelling areas, he sure felt like one.

"Okay," he said to himself, "what have we got here?"

The beam of his handlamp lit up a room filled with crumbling walls, decaying furniture, and the usual subterranean ecology that never saw the light of day. There was a scrabbling sound as a nest of arthropods fled from the handlamp's glare.

"Anybody home?"

There was no answer but the sound of his voice as it echoed back to him. Not that he had expected one, but he had to make sure. After all, it was the entire purpose of his expedition.

The basic idea was Lando's. Put simply, the ex-gambler had realized that a great part of Coruscant's real estate was lying around virtually free, untouched for what might actually be centuries. His realization was not a new one. Every so often someone on Coruscant would look down past his feet and smack his head at how obvious it was. However, they eventually ran into the same problems every other get-rich-quick schemer had: feral half-sentients and the fact that the lower levels supported the higher ones.

The first problem was easy enough to solve. There were poisons available for those who weren't concerned with moral or ecological ramifications, and for those who were, there were humanitarian devices like ultrasound generators that were guaranteed to drive the echolocating fauna away.

Lando's answer to the second problem came in two parts. One was a team of modified construction droids designed to work in confined spaces. The other was a skyhook kept in geosynchronous orbit above the planetary shields and connected to the ground with tractor beams. Unlike repulsors, which would push at a planet's surface, this "spacehook" pulled using centrifugal force.

Of course, even Lando wasn't crazy enough to suggest that the spacehook would lift the top layers of Coruscant while the lower ones were being rebuilt. His slightly less lunatic idea was that it would counteract the gravitational pull only for as long as it took for the construction droids to reinforce the structural strength of the primary foundations.

In the end, the only thing that had made Coruscant nod yes was the realization that sooner or later the infrastructure was going to break under the weight if something wasn't done about it.

Until seven days ago, Wedge had known nothing about Lando's newest scheme. Then he suddenly found he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and before he knew it he had been conned into the job of "evicting" the denizens of Coruscant's bowels.

Not that he expected to find any, of course.

He keyed his comm link. "Wedge here. Nothing to report; how about you?"

"Same here," Jacen Solo's voice replied from the comm link. "I thought I felt something a moment ago, though. I'm going to check it out."

"Not without me you aren't," Wedge said. Visions of the boy being buried under crumbling duracrete crossed his mind. And while Jacen had the Force on his side, he wasn't a full Jedi yet. "I promised Han and Leia I'd look after you, so stay put, okay?"

"It's probably nothing," the teenager said. "Hey - hold on, I think it's close."

There was a burst of noise as Jacen switched his comm link off. Wedge cursed under his breath. Finding out that the boy was enjoying a vacation from his Jedi training had been a pleasant surprise. Because Han and Leia had been called away on some diplomatic emergency shortly before Jacen's arrival, Wedge had volunteered to look after him until they returned or his vacation was over, whichever came first.

Wedge half-ran through the abandoned corridors, wondering what had possessed him to agree to look after a Solo kid. If nothing else, he never should have left Jacen to wander off alone. Wedge had come to the conclusion that he must have been crazy when the comm link crackled to life again.

"Um . . . Wedge?" Jacen sounded puzzled, not frightened or in pain. Wedge took it as a good sign.

"Yes, Jacen? Where are you, anyway?"

"In the west wing. There's - I found something I think you should see."

"Oh? What?"

"You'd better come over here. I don't think you'll believe me if I told you."

"Jacen -" Wedge started, but Jacen had killed the comm signal again. This had better be good, he thought.

-----

The object leaning against the wall was two meters high, one meter wide, a quarter of a meter thick, and made of a black material. There was no mistaking it for anything other than what it was: a slab of carbonite with a man embedded in it. And while the sensors that monitored the slab's innards had run out of power long ago, Jacen sensed through the Force that the man was still alive.

"Jacen! Found you at last."

He raised a hand to keep Wedge's handlamp out of his eyes and gestured with his other hand at his discovery. "Look," he said.

Wedge whistled through his teeth. "Is it - is he still alive?"

Jacen nodded. "But he's been like this for -" He made a few mental calculations. "Oh wow."

Wedge inspected the controls. "I don't suppose it would be a good idea to unfreeze him here, even if this was running on full power."

"Should I call Medical?"

"And CoruSec." Seeing Jacen's blank look, he added, "The only guys that freeze people like this are criminals."

"Oh. Got it."

After the calls were made, they retreated into the ancient building's hallway. The "official" reason was to keep the room undisturbed for the forensic examiners. The real reason was because it gave both of them the creeps.

Jacen knew that his father had once been frozen in carbonite. His mother sometimes made jokes about putting him back in there if he caused too much trouble. He wished he'd taken the time to ask them about that experience.

"Wedge?" he said.

"Still here, kid. What's on your mind?"

"Did Dad ever talk to you about when he was . . . you know, frozen?"

Wedge paused for a moment before answering. "A couple of times. It was mostly about what we did. Han wasn't doing anything, you know."

"Yeah, I guess." It didn't take a Jedi to know that Wedge had edited his reply. Jacen wondered what details had been cut.

"Besides," Wedge went on, "freezing someone slows down their metabolism like you wouldn't believe. An year would go by in a flash."

"Yes, but - that guy's been in there for ages!"

Wedge grinned. "Look, you can ask him what it was like after we get him out, okay?"

"All right, but -"

Wedge held up a silencing hand. "Keep the questions for later. Looks like CoruSec's here."

Great set-up. I liked how you linked the pair. And all the info about the city and why they were exploring was wonderful.

I look forward to the 'unveiling' LOL.

To use a few movie expressions, I like to start with a wide shot and zoom in on the characters.

The unveiling is scheduled for the next post. (You'd lynch me if it wasn't, right? grin ) Thanks for the rabbit & I hope I can do it justice!

It took them several hours to establish that Doctor Eshka Mar'vys was not a specialist in cryogenics as Jacen had hoped. Most of that time was spent waiting for the Bothan doctor to acknowledge their existence. However, a few calls by an increasingly impatient Wedge had let her know that the two lowly civilians in the waiting room were, in fact, none other than ex-General Wedge Antilles and Jedi Apprentice Jacen Solo. After that she had been more than eager to share the details about her patient.

"Flash-freezing is very rare," she explained shortly after introducing herself. "We don't get enough cases to justify having a cryogenics doctor on call."

"What about the Yomir incident?" Jacen asked.

Her fur rippled in polite surprise at his question. "I see you've been doing your research," she said approvingly.

Yomir was a planet in the Middle Rim that orbited an unstable star. Because of constant solar flares, the mining colony there was often cut off from the rest of the galaxy for months at a time. Some fifty years ago, during one of those extended solar flares, a mutated virus had contaminated the food supply. Faced with starvation and having no means of escape, the colonists had decided to freeze themselves in carbonite.

"Unfortunately," she said, "the chambers were never meant to be used on people. Most of them were damaged on a cellular level and didn't survive the unfreezing."

"But there were survivors, right?"

"Yes and no. The solar radiation was very intense, you see." She paused as she saw their expressions darken and added quickly, "But the man you found is in fine condition. He's suffering from malnutrition and hibernation sickness, but that's about it."

"I heard he's still unconscious," Wedge said.

"Well yes, General, but that's only to be expected." She brightened as a thought came to her. "When you consider the usual disorientation of someone coming out of carbon freeze, I would say it's better this way."

Jacen wasn't sure he agreed but decided not to push the point. There was no use in antagonizing the doctor, after all. He asked, "Have you found out who he is?"

"Ah. That's the interesting part," the doctor said. "I took a genetic scan for Coruscant Security. And - here, let me show you."

She tapped a console on her desk and a flat hologram appeared between her and the humans. Jacen recognized it as a two dimensional representation of a cell.

"This is one of his cells. Let me isolate the chromosomes here -"

A few more taps and the hologram zoomed in on the nucleus. The murky things inside solidified into short ropes that turned into the elongated X's Jacen remembered from his biology lessons.

"There. Do you notice anything strange about them?"

Jacen gave up after five minutes of close scrutiny. He looked to Wedge for help, but Wedge only shrugged helplessly.

"Count them," the doctor said. "There are forty-eight chromosomes. That's one pair more than a human."

Wedge frowned. "So he's an alien. What's so strange about that?"

"Ah, but he is human." Tap. "See these gene sequences here? They're only found in humans. And this cellular structure here -"

"We'll take your word for it." Wedge said in a hurry. "So he's a human with extra genes. That means he's been genetically engineered, doesn't it."

"That's right, General. And I think I know what the added chromosomes do." The hologram returned to the view of the entire cell, then zoomed in on something that reminded Jacen of the time he'd looked at a drop of rain water under a magnifier.

"Midi-chlorians," she said triumphantly. "You know what this means, of course."

Jacen didn't. And from the look on his face, neither did Wedge. When informed of their ignorance, the Bothan's fur rippled in a way that suggested she was struggling to be only politely surprised.

"Midi-chlorians are chemical power processing units," she explained. "They convert sugars into energy. Some cells, like the ones in your heart, have more midi-chlorians than others because they use more energy. Most people have eight to ten thousand per cell. This human, on the other hand, has a midi-chlorian count of close to forty thousand."

"So," Wedge said, "you're saying this guy has upgraded power cells? For stronger muscles and stuff?"

"Yes. And the genetic sequences in the extra chromosome are similar to the ones used in genetically enhanced clones."

Jacen couldn't help blurting out, "He's a clone?"

"I can't be certain until I run some more detailed tests, but - yes. I think so."

They were spared a mini-lecture about cloning technology when the doctor was interrupted by an orderly's voice from her comm. "Doctor Mar'vys? Your carbon-freeze patient is awake."

Jacen didn't know whether she looked more delighted at the good news or disappointed that she couldn't show off her knowledge.

"Thank you, Dav. I'll be there right away." She gave Jacen and Wedge a small bow. "Shall we?"

-----

It was so bright it was painful. Even with his eyes shut the lights glared at him. It was like having both Tatooine suns in front of him.

Tatooine, he thought. How do I know that world?

The name brought back flashes of memory. A droid. A silver ship. A small boy -

He couldn't remember the boy's name. When he tried, the throbbing in his head became a series of small explosions.

"Ah roo oh rye?" a voice said. The voice belonged to someone standing nearby. A female alien, by the sound of it.

He wanted to tell her to go away so that her voice wouldn't trigger avalanches in his head, but there was something wrong with his throat. It was almost as if it had rusted over years of disuse. But that was impossible - he couldn't have been frozen that long.

Frozen?

There was something about that particular word, something important. But when he tried to bring it to focus, it slipped away like a greased Hutt, leaving behind only pain.

"Are you all right?" the female voice asked again. "How do you feel?"

"Aww rye," he said, then wondered whose voice it was. It certainly didn't sound like himself. He tried again, this time pronouncing the words as carefully as he could. "All, righ' - right. I'm. Fa - fine."

Somehow, he got the impression his words weren't as clear as he thought they were. He clenched his fists and grinded his teeth in frustration. The thought that his senses were deceiving him was more disturbing than not being able to make himself understood.

"What's your name, sir?"

"My . . . name?"

Hundreds of names came and went. All of them sounded so alien to him, yet seemed so familiar. Qui-Gon. Anakin. Siri. Dexter. Yoda. Palpatine. . .

"Your name, sir," the voice prompted. "Who are you?"

Who am I?

The moment he asked himself that question, an answer came to him. And for the first time since his awakening, he felt no pain.

"O - Obi," he said, struggling to get his thick tongue around what should be familiar syllables. "Obi-Wan Ke - Kenobi."

Interesting. They didn't know what midi-chlorians are. Are they just assuming he's a clone since they don't know the connection between Jedi and midi-chlorians? Or is he a clone thinking Eager for more. grin

Wow, a clone with a midichlorian count that obviously indicates someones been tampering with the normal number he should have... interesting. I wonder what he will think of when he finds out no one knows what midichlorians are, or rather that they indicate the level of force sensitivity.

I'm glad I updated, too. For a while I thought I'd never get around to it. *shudders*

I'm probably going to leave interacting with Obi(?) to Jacen while Wedge deals with another OC. *rubs hands in anticipation*

It's not a major plot point or anything. I'm just assuming that someone went and systematically erased/altered all data that links midi-chlorians to Force strength. Otherwise, how do you explain why the M-word doesn't appear in the EU? grin

Technically, the extra chromosomes suggest that he's a genetic construct and not a clone - but that's too much of a mouthful (not to mention geeky!). As for who/what he is, I will remain silent for the time being. *cackles with mad glee*

I'm wondering that myself. Of course, first he has to learn that they don't know about the MC/Force connection, and that might never happen. I mean, we hardly ever mention breathing oxygen in casual conversation, do we? grin

No, this is just a biochemical explanation I came up with because I find it hard to believe that the existence of MCs could be forgotten in just a few decades.

The canon simply states that MCs are microscopic symbionts that live inside living cells (making life in the GFFA possible) and communicate with the Force. That's quite a lot of elbow room for technobabble geeks like me to play around in. grin

Thanks for reading!
