Title: In the event of my death...
Author: AdmiralWesJanson
Characters: Mara, Artoo
Type: Vignette
Era: During Showdown at Centerpoint
Genre: romance, sort of
Summary: Mara records a message for Luke before the Battle of Centerpoint Station
Feedback: Of course
Author's Notes: I decided that this series will tie into my other upcoming series, Banners, my attempt at a canon rendition of Mara from the Corellian Trilogy through Survivors Quest. That one won't be until I finish this one, however.

In the event of my death...

Mara glanced at the little droid then made a quick decision. "Shorty, get over here." He warbled something that sounded like a question. "Yes, you. I have a favor to ask." Artoo rolled over cautiously, as if he didn't trust her. She was amused that the droid seemed to be much more prudent than his master. She felt a bit of sympathy for the droid, being pulled into all of Skywalker's ill-planned misadventures. Another beep. "You know, Shorty, I'm not Skywalker. I can't understand you." The droid spun his dome to the left, then extended his third wheel and rolled over to a nearby computer terminal and plugged into the data port. Words appeared on the screen.

*I have to find my X-wing. We are taking off soon*

Mara nodded, feeling odd talking to a droid like this. Especially one so grammatically correct. "I know. That's what this is about. I want you to record a message for me."

*What kind of message?*

"One that I want you to play for Luke if I don't make it through this battle." Her voice softened. She never thought she would find herself doing this. Too sentimental, almost. Artoo chirped and pulled away to face her. Mara looked around and saw several people nearby. "Not here. Somewhere private. In the Fire."

He rolled past her and up the ramp. She followed, then closed the hatch behind her. Artoo stopped then spun to regard her. "I'll let you off. I just don’t want company. Now listen up." She sat down cross-legged on the decking. Artoo extended his holorecorder and it lit up.

"Skywalker. I feel sort of odd doing this, but I'd rather do this than not. Artoo has been instructed to play this for you in case I don't survive the battle at Centerpoint. Got that, Artoo? There are a few things I want you to know, that you should know, even if I'm not around to knock it into your thick skull. The first thing is that you need to take better care of yourself. I've seen you hurt, depressed, angry, sad, tired, and bored a few times, but I rarely see you truly happy. You need to do something about that. Take a break once in a while. Get away from Coruscant or the Academy. Just go somewhere you aren't recognized, where you aren't tempted to run off and help someone, somewhere you can just relax. I think you need it. You've got this solemn serene Jedi thing going all the time, and it really isn't healthy. Despite what you may think, you are human too. That brings me to a second point."

Her voice was rising, and she leaned forward. "I think when it comes to the Force, you may be missing a bit of the point. The short story is that I don't think you ever got over that little dark side adventure about eight years ago. You still seem a little too focused on the power the Force gives you, meaning you miss a lot of the subtle things. To be honest, that's why I went to Katarn for some of my early training, and why I don't hang around your jungle resort for too long. Among other reasons."

"Also annoying is the fact that whenever I do stop by, you basically say hi, then ignore me. After all the effort you spend to get me there, whenever I finally knuckle under and come, I feel like you should give me something special maybe. I don't know. Maybe it's petty, maybe not, but I think I deserve that much from you. But right now it seems like maybe you are starting to see that yourself. That's why I'm actually going to tell you this last part."

Now was the most difficult part of this whole message. Mara steeled herself, then started talking again in a quiet voice. "I...this is hard for me to say. You know me, argumentative, cold, short, sharp temper, aloof. Well, you don't really know me. Well, you know the me that you see, but not the real me. Sithspit. That made no sense. Artoo, can you go back and erase that?"

The droid spun his dome side to side, which she took as a no. "All right. I'll try again. The way I act around everyone isn't the way I really am. To put it simply, I'm not a people person. I don't like anyone getting too close. You probably remember all the times I told you to get out of my head. Some of that was because I was afraid. I didn't want anyone getting too close, and you have that damn annoying earnest persistence that made me think if you really wanted to, you could get through my barriers and find out what I was really like. I don't want that. I like who I am. I've got a good life right now, I've got a great ship, and I'm content. But I'm constantly afraid that you will find out I'm not really happy and try to do something about it. I know you wouldn't force your way into my mind, but the odds are good that you would annoy me enough that I'd give up and tell you just to shut you up."

She paused, collecting her thoughts. "Yes, you can be annoying at times, but I put up with you. I used to wonder why, but I think I figured it out." Again she stopped. Noting that her legs were getting stiff from sitting the way she was, Mara shifted, pulling her knees up to her chin and leaning against the bulkhead. She wrapped her arms around her shins, making her appear almost vulnerable. It would never do to have someone see her sitting like this, but when she was alone, the position was comforting.

Finally she continued. "I'm just going to say this. I really don't have a personal life. Never have. For the first half of my life, the Emperor controlled me. After that, I was afraid. I didn't want to be close to anyone, in fear of them using that to control me. That's why I can't get too close to you right now, no matter how lonely I really am. To you, we may not be all that close, but for me it is, kind of. I think that I would enjoy some more time around you, getting closer, but I'm not sure what I would do after a little while. It's hard to tell. I'm not that good at seeing the future. Maybe you could tell me. I'm sure the all-mighty Jedi farseeing could show you something. Maybe not if what I think is your problem is correct. See? It's your problem. I know you expect me to tell you to deal with it, but I won't. I want to help you with this. Of course I can say that in this message. If you are seeing this, I won't be around to deal with it. If you don't see this, then I am likely still around, hoping you figure it out for yourself. You're always telling all your students that the best way to teach is to gently hint in the right direction, and let the student discover it for themselves. If I'm still alive, I'll try that. Though knowing you, I'll probably lose patience and just let you have it at some point. You can be so frustrating at times."

At that point, she realized she was babbling. She usually tried to avoid that. "And I'm getting off-topic. The last thing I want to say to you is this. I...shavit! You're not even here, and I still don't want to say it." Building up the courage, she looked directly into Artoo's holoreceptor.

"I care about you. A lot. There. Now that I said it out loud, it's real, isn't it? I'm sort of mixed though. I don't want to tell you in person, because right now you seem oblivious to how I feel. But if you see this, then that's it. There's nothing that can be done about it, I'll be dead. But even if you don't see this, and I'm still alive, I'm going to have to deal with it. Like usual, you are causing me problems. You on the other hand, don't seem to notice how I feel. I'm just the little potential Jedi. Sometimes when I see you moping over people you can't have, I just want to drag you outside and yell at you that there is someone right in front of you that cares about you. Someone besides your family I mean."

Another break to calm herself a little. "If I am dead, however, I'd rather that you don't blame yourself over it. I'll regret it, sure, but I don't want you to. And it probably won't be your fault. You can't take responsibility for my actions, or for other peoples. So don't try. Worry about the things you can prevent." She noticed that her voice had gone up in volume yet again.

More quietly, she finished. "I think I've said enough. I could say more, but it's time to go. In some ways, I feel like I haven't said enough, while other parts of me regret saying even this much. I care about you, Luke, so take care of yourself for me. You've been bobbing in bacta enough for one lifetime already. I do hope that you don't have to see this message ever, but if you do, then goodbye, Luke."

She stood up and saw that Artoo had stopped recording. Her features hardened, blocking off the emotion she had released while recording the message. "I don't want you to play that unless I'm actually dead, got it? Not just presumed dead, or missing. Confirmed dead. In fact, don't even tell Luke that you were here." The droid gave her a mournful whistle. "And if you do have to play that message, look out for him for me, ok?" He twittered an affirmative.

She slapped the hatch release panel. "You can go. Thank you, Artoo." When he rolled out and back into the hangar, she raised the ramp and resealed the hatch. Flipping switches in the cockpit, she mulled over the message she recorded. What she said seemed sufficient, but still she was unsatisfied with the result. The only way Luke would see that message would be if she was dead. "I should have said love," Mara concluded. But there was no time to call Artoo back. Bovo Yagen depended on all of them.

Phew, I like how she kept struggling to put it the right way. There was a real element of tension there.

Ties in nicely with what she did say to him in VotF. I can see Mara recording something like this.

And if Luke did accidentally see the recording without her being killed, that could explain how touchy each of them were about the other, at the beginning of Specter of the Past. wink

It was on her fifteenth day in the darkness of the Nirauan cave when Mara Jade awoke to discover a rescuer had finally arrived.
It was not, however, any of the potential rescuers she would have expected.
It was Luke.

Sweet little vig.

I like the thought of Mara making a recording for Luke of all the things she can't quite bring herself to say to his face.

I still havent figured out the formatting codes for this board yet sad

RedGold: I had fun writing it. It sat on my hard drive for a while before I put it up today.

Ishtar: I see it as her trying to figure out what she is feeling, and working it out to herself as she speaks. Mara would also be rather uncomfortable with the feeling of not being in control of herself or her emotions

Jedi-2B: I actually have a series in the works that I plan to explain that tension. However your idea got in my head. So now this one shot will have a sequel. I've always liked the Corellian Trilogy-Hand of Thrawn period. As a side note, your Discovery Trilogy is probably my favorite L/M fanfic.

JadeLotus: I got the idea when I read Iron Fist and Phanan's message for Face. I sort of wondered if Mara would do it ever for Luke, then realized that the only opportunity would have been in the Corellian Trilogy.

Thank you all for the feedback. While this was going to be a one-shot, I should now have a sequel up later today or tomorrow grin
I also have a number of little ideas which will show up either in the later series, or maybe some more Vigs. Wes, Winter, and Han have provided me with a number of humorous ideas.

This was nice. I enjoy seeing the inner workings and thoughts of characters that the authors of the EU rarely touch on as well as you just did. Bravo.

Great vig! grin

It was fun "hearing" from Artoo.

Mara encouraging Luke to take care of himself and asking Artoo to look after him tie in very well with the scene in I, Jedi when she asked Corran to keep an eye on Luke before she left. They were all probably relieved when she finally decided to take on job herself. wink

A really emotional peice, you really captured how hard it is for her to admit to how she felt. I also liked the Atoo and Mara interaction, very cute and funny when compared to what she was saying. Very good.

I really like how Mara records everything that she says in VotF. It's very ... Mara to do that.

Also very good how she had trouble wording it right.

Great vig. I can't wait for that sequel.

I loved this!! Of course, your characterization of Mara and Artoo were so right on. I love what she said to Luke and...lol I so want to read a fic where Luke listens to it!

(By the way, the formatting codes for this board are very similar to html, just with [ ] those kind of brackets instead of < > that kind. They also changed the posting/reply page so you can just click a button to put in bold or italics or whatever you want. Makes it so much faster. happy )
