Interlude: Moments in Time, starts now!

---

MOMENTS IN TIME

The Clone Wars have ended. The Sith Lord Darth Sidious is dead, and the Confederacy of Independent Systems has made truce with the Galactic Republic. Count Dooku and his new apprentice have gone into hiding on Yavin.

It is a time of peace, a pause between conflicts. In this time Anakin Skywalker has begun to train Mara Jade, and his children, Luke and Leia, have been taken to the Jedi Temple, though their mother Padme visits them regularly.

Now are the moments in time of people going about their day to day affairs, experiencing every day moments that make up the mosaic of life and experience.....

----

Anakin Skywalker shruged into his new robe, over his similarly new tunic. He felt that as the Chosen One, his garb should not be entirely typical Jedi fare. This had been true of him before, of course, but he recognized now that his old gear had been very much Sith-inclined. He strove now for something more...balanced.

He still wore the specialzed protection-vest he had created, but no longer was it black. Instead it was deep, rich shade of green, and his new cloak and hood matched. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath.

Mara came out of the bathroom, similarly garbed, tailored to her size. She pouted.

"You don't like it?" He asked her.

She giggled. "It looks silly!"

He smiled a little. "Silly is no bad thing, Padawan."

Padawan. It still gave him chills to refer to someone else by that title. Not just any padawan. But his. A girl who had, in her own way, been a student of Sidious. However incomplete and secondary that training had been.

"Are we going on a mission, Master?" she asked him.

"Not today, little one," he responded affectionately. "But soon. A mission I've waited for ever since I was a little Padawan myself."

"Really?" She raised an eyebrow.

"Yes, really. But not today. Today we shall simply journey throughout the city, so that you may see more of people."

-----

They left the Jedi temple and moved on, using public transport only when they had to, mostly walking.

Mara knew where Anakin was taking her first, a place she had not asked to go, but secretly wished to.

They stood outside the vast shape of the Senate building, but did not go inside. Instead they stood before the large black spire that stood just to the left of the entrace.

SUPREME CHANCELLOR IARAC PALPATINE
Leader in Peace and War
He gave his life for the Republic
Do not forget him

They stood before the monument for some time, not speaking. Even when the soft drizzle of rain began, still they did not move, not even to put their hoods up.

Eventually, Anakin led Mara away.

(Next: Palpatine's spirit recieves an unexpected visitor, and a crossover begins far sooner than originally expected)

First post for the first chapter!! Yeah!! dancing

Interesting...I'm looking forward to seeing where you go with this. As usual, you style is stimulating but not overly cumbersome. Great to read! Keep up the good work.

Off to a good start, Arcalian! happy

Though I must say, you're made Anakin quite...colorful. I don't mean that in a bad way, it's just bizarre. He's got two lightsabers that are purple and orange, and now he's got a dark green attaire going on. Needless to say, he stands out...and having Mara dressed the same was pretty funny and, dare I say, adorable. tongue

And the moment those two shared at Palpatine's monument was powerful. To think what would've happened to them had Palpy got his way. Thankfully he's ancient history now. cool

Two questions, I have. First, I may have missed it, but how much time has passed since the end of the Clone War? If Luke and Leia have started their training, that must mean...what, five years at least have gone by more or less? And second, we know that Luke and Leia have taken up residence at the Temple (as is necessary for their training), but what about Anakin? Does he switch off at times between staying with Padme and at the Temple, or because he's training Mara he has to spend the majority of his time at the Temple? Personally, I hope it's the former! We wouldn't want to make Padme mad, now would we? worried wink

Great post, can't wait to see what's next! grin

Baby Luke and Leia have been taken to the Temple to join the Younglings, earlier than otherwise might have happened, partly because their parents are near to hand, and partly because of who exactly those parents are. Yoda is looking after the infants very closely, indeed.

It is less than two months since the end of "Redeemed".

Anakin still spends most of his time with Mara at the temple, but occasionally visits Padme at her apartment. It's not really much different from their situation was before, because while the Jedi know about them, the public at large does not. If anything, Anakin gets to see the twins more than her, because they are in the Temple.

Nice post you've got there. Can't wait to see what happens to Palpatine's ghost or whatever. Who is the crossover going to be with?

For some of your short stories, could you possibly throw in a couple of posts about some of the other Jedi that are still around at this time, especially some of the ones that have been on missions with Anakin before, to see their views of the events that have taken place, and that are coming to the Order?

If you do write up any posts based on other Jedi, would you happen to take suggestions for which Jedi they would be?

Heehee..i wonder if she and Luke will become closer as they get older ^_^! as for Anakin, he's turning out to be an effective and gentle master to Mara. You know what? Coruscant's traffic control may or may not have noticed the small blip that showed up on their sensors. If they had, they would've noticed how innocuous it was; how it simply stayed there in geosynchronous orbit, above the same spot. A curious mind may have noted that it hung in the path the Invisible Hand had taken on it's way to crashing into the planet. Any Jedi could have told you, looking through the Force, that it was at that spot that there was a burst of Dark Side energy.

Anakin, Dooku, or Obi-Wan could've specifically told you, if they were prepared to divulge such secrets, what had happened there. It was the exact place where Darth Sidious had died.

The unremarkable blip on the sensor screens appeared to be nothing more than an innocuous rectangular blue box. It had glass windows near the top of it's surface, and what appeared to be doors. In a language that was like, and yet unlike Galactic Basic, scrolled near the top of the box on one side, were the words "POLICE Public Call BOX".

This blue box faded slowly into reality at these coordinates, a blue light flashing atop it. If anyone had been around to listen in the thin upper atmosphere of the planet, they would have heard the noise the box made on it's arrival, a howling noise not unlike that of a Jedi Starfighter, but more complicated; it had a rising and falling cadence to it, the sound of engines working mightlily to temporarily defy the laws of physics. As the box fully solidified, the blue light went out and the noise ended in a resounding thud.

If one had the ability to enter the box's plasmic shell, one would have experienced a moment of disorientation. A scientist of reasonable skill could've told you that disorientation was a result of passing through a dimensional interface. For in truth the box was not really a box at all, but a gateway to a pocket dimension; an artificial reality created by mathematical engineering. The culture behind that technology was so advanced as to make the cutting edge of technology in the Galactic Republic look primitive, and that was going some.

In truth this was a ship of sorts, designed to travel between the stars....and between different point in time. A time machine that could also move in space.

In the control room of this time machine (clean white roundelled walls, sterile but in a comforting everything-is-safe way, low technological hum from the hexagonal console), there stood what appeared to be a short man in his late forties or early fifties. His hair was black and ever so slightly wavy, jammed under a cream colored hat. A similarly cream-white jacket and pants clothed him, underneath which he wore a raw silk shirt and a paisely cravat knotted carelessly. He seemed almost comical in appearance. Almost.

Then you looked at the eyes. Blue eyes with ice-cold determination in them, eyes that, if you looked long enough, disclosed that this man was not truly Human; he was a member of a race that superficially resembled humanity but his internal organs were much more complicated, and in his orange-red blood ran artificial nanites that could rival midichlorians for complexity and intensity.

The non-human was also more than 900 years old. And unlike Yoda, by the standards of his race that was fairly young.

This not-man turned to the console and pressed a control. A video screen lit up, showing the surface of Coruscant. It did not show the static burst of Dark Side energy before the Ship, but the not-man could feel it all the same. He was not, in the traditional sense of the term, Force-sensitive; but by his very nature he could sense the Force and other energies, and under the right circumstances, influence them.

Now from behind the not-man, from the depths of the ship, came a young girl who was human. But if you looked in her eyes, you would see that she had already witnessed things, both amazing and horrible, that most humans would never witness, and that these things had changed her, as travel and adventure often do. And that these things came to her as a result of her association with the non-human who controlled this time travelling vessel.

The girl was still towelling her hair from a shower, despite the fact that she had already dressed, including a black jacket with all sorts of patches on it; symbols of various organizations. On the back of the jacket was emblazoned the word, "Ace."

"Oi, Professor," she said cheerfully in a London accent. "Where are we now?"

"A long time ago," the non-human answered, in what sounded like a Scottish burr but in truth was not. "In a galaxy far far away."

------

This is how it feels to be the Doctor, Time's Champion, right now:

You allow your irritation at Ace's pet name for you to pass without comment. As she questions you further, you reassure her that this is a simple stop over between adventures, a resting place, that the planet below is one vast city that she would not find very interesting, and that by all means she could go back to her room and play her loud music. They would not be here long.

This is not entirely true. Ace might very well find the planet below interesting, and if you searched hard enough down there you could find an adventure, a problem to solve. But you are here for a specific purpose and reason. The time has not yet come for you to aid the Jedi directly. Indeed, without your help they have already averted a terrible future timeline. But nevertheless you have waited long enough and must step in now, at least briefly, to ensure that a certain late Sith Lord does not disrupt your own endgame in this particular branching of humanity's vast, labyrinthine journeys through the Web of Time.

As Ace returns to her own rooms in the vast inner workings of your vessel, the TARDIS, you yourself go to a cabinet and take out a slim, silvery atmospheric suit, designed to enable survival in this upper atmosphere or even outer space. Your own fantastic reserves and your alien constitution might enable you to survive this confrontation without it, but this incarnation of yourself is meticulous in planning and does not like to take unneccesary chances.

Making sure that your human companion has returned to her own chamber, you quietly and carefully activate the outer doors. The dimensional interface prevents the atmosphere of the ship from being sucked out, but you step through and allow yourself to be drawn into the twilight of the upper atmosphere of Coruscant. You urge the nanites in your bloodstream to reconstruct themselves to perform some of the functions of midichlorians. As your blood sizzles and grants you the Force Sensitivity you require, you lunge forward, into the stain of Dark Side energy, before gravity can pull you down.

Penetrate the Dark Side you do, and in so doing you find yourself in another realm entirely.

As your adversary who is trapped here might himself very well have said, everything was going as planned.

----

Palpatine was dead.

His consciousness was trapped inside the bubble of Dark Side energy, and here he remained, able to influence and advise but not to control.

From his perspective within the prison of the energies of his own death-agony, he was sitting in a chair he could not rise from, in a dark room with a cobbled stone floor.

He had just about given up trying to reason with Dooku. His former apprentice had continued to ignore him, save for that short bit of dialogue they had had when Dooku had escaped his own prison. He was remaking the Sith Order according to his own desires and precepts, and it was not the Sith Order that Darth Sidious had faithfully maintained, a heritage laid down by the mandates of Darth Bane so long ago.

So he was about to turn his attention to his former Hand-in-training, Mara Jade, and her Master Anakin, when he was interrupted by, of all things, a visitor.

The Doctor abruptly materialized in his little prison, looking innocuous in his white suit.

"Greetings, Lord Sidious," The Doctor said, even adding in a little sarcastic bow.

"Who are you and how did you come here?" Palpatine demanded, both astonished and angry.

"Call me the Doctor. You and I met long ago, though I was quite literally a different man then."

Palpatine had a flash of memory; a large man, both tall and wide, with curly blonde hair and a garish patchwork coat. He had been an envoy to the Senate from some obscure planet or other. He had come to the then-Senator Palpatine and had an argument with him in his private quarters, a loud shouting argument. Palpatine had kept his own voice reasonable during the entire conversation, but had been unable to assuage the man's concerns about the future of civil liberties. The man had left in a huff, storming out of his quarters. Palpatine had been outraged at the man's presumption, and had instructed Darth Maul to kill him. But Maul had never found the man. It was though he had simply dissapeared into thin air.

While the man had never intimated he knew anything about Palpatine's dual identity, there had been something in his blue eyes....ice cold blue eyes that had bored into him and, on some unspoken level, known who he truly was.

Eyes identitcal to those staring at him out of the face of the Doctor now.

"As for what I want," the Doctor went on, "It is that you cease and desist trying to influence people."

Palpatine stared for a moment, then cackled harshly. "You cannot stop me!"

"Actually," the Doctor responded, except for one particular case that will fail to benefit you in the end, I can."

The Doctor spread his hands. The dark room began to fill wtih spiderwebs; thick silver beams of power that blocked most of Palpatine's access to the Universe. He could still observe, but his ability to speak was muffled almost to the point of silence. Except for......ah, the fool knew about that too, did he. Well it would benefit him in the end, whatever this arrogant interloper thought.

Even so, Palpatine was scared. The man was no Jedi, yet had blocked his power in the Dark Side! How was that possible?

"I don't know how you did that," Palpatine snarled. "But I will break these chains you have forged and resume my power. The Force shall Free me!"

It was an old Sith saying, part of their own dark twisted Code. And it should have brought comfort to Palpatine.

But it didn't.

Especially when the Doctor looked at him with those cold blue eyes and said simply, "No, it won't."

Then he dissapeared.

Palpatine began to scream.

And scream.

And scream.....

---

This is how it feels to be the Doctor, the Ka Faraq Gatri, right now:

You collapse back into the TARDIS, breathing heavily. You crawl to the console and shut the doors with an effort, then slowly begin to peel off the atmospheric suit.

That took more out of you than expected, but it achieved the desired result. As your nanites cease to emulate midichlorians and revert to your own esoteric normality, you know that you have ensured that Palpatine can no longer speak to any, save one particular set of beings that in the end will not be able to help him achieve his aims. Most importantly, Anakin and Mara are safe from his whispering influence. That is good.

You have, as you have done throughtout your various incarnations down the years, helped ensure a better future. But this has taken a lot out of you. You feel a quiet certainty that you will not be able to assist the Jedi for a long time, and when you finally do you will almost certainly have regenerated, becoming once again a different man, just as you had been a different man when you confronted then-Senator Palpatine, so long ago.

You pull yourself up with the assitance of the TARDIS console, still sweating slightly, and set the controls to dematerialize. Then you go in search of Ace. It would not do for her to suspect that you had been doing things behind her back, even good things. And more, that you had had an "adventure" without her. Even though it hadn't exactly been an adventure for you. Just one of thousands of tasks that needed to be done.

----

The TARDIS vanished from Coruscant's upper atmosphere the same way it had arrived, blue light flashing, noise groaning in it's up and down cadence, fading away into nothing.

The blip dissapeared from the sensor screens of Corsucant traffic control. Even if anyone had noticed it, it was gone before they could sent any ships to investigate.

It would be a long time before the Doctor visited the Galactic Republic again.
