Title:
Hiding Behind Reason
Author:
lazykbys
Timeframe:
pre-RotJ
Characters:
Leia, Chewie & Threepio, Lando, Luke
Genre:
AU (SotE doesn't happen but RotJ will)
Keywords:
Summary:
After a failed rescue attempt, Leia needs to be persuaded to go after Han one more time.
Notes:
This is an entry for the
GWG
September 2005 challenge.
This fic is, in a weird way, a sequel to
Alone With Han
. It's weird because a) the idea for this story came first and b) I never intended for the two stories to be connected. It was only when I was thinking up excuses not to continue
Alone With Han
that I realized it was the perfect setup for this story - which I was going to write anyway.

Hiding Behind Reason
The Narax system was a perfect place to hide from Imperial eyes. Located just two parsecs away from the Corellian Run, the positioning of nearby stars and black holes made direct hyperspace jumps into the area impossible. And since there were no known inhabitable planets in the area, no-one bothered to look.
Of course, once inside there was no place to hide, especially from those who were hiding with you. The Rebel base was too small for that.
Leia was in her quarters, trying to compose a report for Alliance Command when Threepio's voice disrupted her.
"Mistress Leia!" the droid said through the intercom, "I'm terribly sorry, but Chewbacca requests to speak with you. He says it's rather urgent."
She wondered if pretending she wasn't here would send them away.
Probably,
she told herself.
But they'll be back.
She picked up her commlink and thumbed it on. "Show him in, Threepio. The door's not locked."
Leia's quarters, while not huge, was still large enough for four or five people. However, when Chewbacca entered it suddenly seemed small and cramped.
"You wanted to talk to me?" she asked. Not that it took a genius to know what he wanted.
The Wookiee's reply was a short growl which Threepio translated, "Chewbacca wishes to know when you will be sending a team to rescue Captain Solo."
Chewbacca gave Threepio an annoyed look and continued in a low-pitched roar. Threepio explained, "He respectfully reminds you that time is of the essence. He fears that, once Captain Solo is in Jabba the Hutt's hands, rescuing him will be quite difficult."
Another look, another roar, another translation: "He also says that he would like to volunteer for -"
He was cut off by Chewbacca's loud growls. Leia couldn't understand half of what the Wookiee was saying, but it sounded
very
irritated.
Threepio said, "I know that, you uncivilized furball. But if I translated each and every impolite word you said, you would
never
get Captain Solo back."
Chewbacca let out a loud reverberating roar that had the distinct sound of words unsuitable for polite company.
"Well, I
never!
" Threepio said. Somehow, despite not having any facial expressions at all, he managed to look shocked. "I don't see why I have to put up with such - such
rudeness
. I'm sorry to have intruded, Your Highness."
He was halfway through the door when Leia stopped him. "Wait, Threepio. Don't go. We need you to translate."
"I'm sorry, but this Wookiee's language leaves
much
to be desired."
"Trust me, I've heard worse. Now, what was he saying just a moment ago?"
"Are you sure you want to know, Your Highness?"
"Yes. I'm sure."
"If you insist. He called me a termite-infested lump of -"
Leia waved her hand dismissively. "Not that. The one before. Something about volunteering."
"I beg your pardon, Mistress," Threepio said with a hurt air. "Chewbacca said that he would go alone and against orders if he had to. Of course, his words were more colorful than that."
"I . . . see." And she thought,
I should have expected this. Han explained Chewie's life debt to me.
It wasn't just Chewbacca. Quite a few people owed their lives to Han Solo's efforts. But some of those people, while grateful of course, did not see that Han was in any immediate danger. The fact that there had already been a failed rescue attempt made them think twice about sending another team, let alone the same one headed by Leia.
The other reason - the more justifiable reason, in Leia's opinion - was the report of a second Death Star, brought to the Rebels by a group of Bothan slicers. If this was true, then destroying it before the Empire claimed another Alderaan as a victim took priority over everything else. And the sad truth was that the Rebel Alliance simply could not afford to risk any ships or personnel in a rescue right now.
To make things worse, this information was strictly need-to-know. And Chewbacca, while unquestionably trustworthy and loyal to his friends, did not rank high enough in the Alliance hierarchy. There was no way Leia could tell him why they wouldn't authorize Han's rescue without breaking her oaths.
"We're not ready to rescue Han yet," she said at last. "We're still waiting for some reports to be verified." There. Both statements were true. They only became lies when they were put together.
Leia tried not to squirm under Chewbacca's gaze. It was as if his eyes could see directly into her soul.
After an uncomfortably long pause, Chewbacca grunted something that sounded remarkably like "All right, then." Threepio translated, "He says he is willing to wait. But he will not wait forever."
Leia nodded. "I understand. Believe me, I want Han back just as much as you do."
To her relief, Chewbacca left without making any comments. However, the questions he left behind kept her from making any progress on her report. After an hour of deleting sentence after sentence, Leia decided she needed a break and headed for the mess hall.
-----
Because it was the "night" shift, the mess hall was empty except for one man sitting at a table, absent-mindedly playing solitaire.
Oh no,
Leia thought.
It's Lando.
Lando Calrissian had lost his position as Baron Administrator of Cloud City trying to save Han from the Imperials. He claimed he wanted to get Han out of carbon freeze just to beat the living hell out of him, but he wasn't fooling anybody.
Lando was the last person Leia wanted to see right now. But before she could slip away, he noticed her presence and stood up to greet her.
"Princess Leia!" he said with a dazzling smile. "What an unexpected pleasure. Please, have a seat. Can I get you anything?"
"Maybe a cup of caf," she said weakly.
Lando returned a few minutes later with two cups and a plate of sweet pastries.
"Here you go, Your Highness," he said with a wry grin. "I apologize for the terrible service. I complained to the management but it's no use. They have better things to do. Or so they say."
He gave her a look of polite curiosity. Leia wondered what she would see if she knew him as well as Han did.
Impatience? Anger? And how much of it is at me?
She took a sip and was pleasantly surprised to find that Lando had made it just the way she liked it. She couldn't recall telling him about her preferences - which meant he had found out by himself, one way or the other. She wondered if this was something he did out of spinal reflex, or because he wanted something from her.
"About Han," Lando said. Then, perhaps seeing the alarm blossom on her face, he hastily added, "I'm not going to ask you to authorize a rescue mission right now. I know you're not giving up on him, and that's good enough for me. But I was wondering . . . just
how
did he get mixed up in all this? I mean, after what happened the last time -"
"The last time? What do you mean?"
Lando's smile froze in place. His eyes darted around the room, as if looking for a lid to put on the overflowing can of worms he'd just opened. Then he sighed resignedly and said, "It was . . . I don't know, maybe four or five years ago. We - smugglers, that is - were contacted by Rebels. They said they were going to raid a slave planet owned by the Hutts and needed our help. They promised us fifty percent of the loot."
Leia nodded. The Rebel Alliance had always been short on funds, ships, and personnel. Making such a deal with smugglers was rare, but not unheard of. "What happened?"
"The raid was successful. But then they double-crossed us and took everything. Han got the worst of the deal. He was the one who vouched for the Rebel contact, see? So we all blamed him, he blamed the Rebels, we told him to get out before we started shooting, and Han said that was fine with him because he hated our guts anyway." Lando winced at the recollection. "So you can imagine my surprise when he turns up at Cloud City, a wanted Rebel."
He gave her a smile and added, "Of course, I can certainly see why he would want to stay."
Leia smiled back, but her mind was elsewhere. If what Lando said was true, then the Alliance owed Han a debt of conscience.
We betrayed him,
she thought.
And we separated him from his friends as well.
Some people, she knew, would argue that smugglers banded together for mutual profit, not friendship. But she knew Han too well to think of him as a mere mercenary. He wouldn't have stayed with people he didn't care for.
She was only vaguely aware that Lando was saying something. Part of her mind registered it as an anecdote from his smuggling days and laughed automatically on cue. The rest of her wanted to find somewhere to be alone, to think over what she had just learned.
"I'm sorry, Lando," she said abruptly. "But I . . . just remembered something I have to do."
If Lando was hurt by this dismissal, he didn't show it. Without a trace of sarcasm he said, "Of course, Your Highness. Forgive me for keeping you so long."
-----
The firing range was located on the far end of the Rebel base and saw very little traffic. The only people who came here were those who were obsessively serious about honing their shooting skills and people who wanted to be alone.
As Leia approached, she heard a strange humming sound that told her there was a third category, namely Jedi Knights who needed room for lightsaber practice.
Luke stood at the far end of the firing range, holding his newly-made lightsaber and wearing a helmet on his head that blocked out his vision and most of his hearing. He was surrounded by three floating training remotes that shot at him at random intervals.
As such, there was no way he could have seen or heard Leia coming, yet he quickly dispatched the remotes and took off his helmet to greet her.
"Hi, Leia. What brings you here?"
"Nothing important," she replied. "I just needed somewhere quiet to think."
"Oh. Sorry. I'll be going, then."
"No . . . please, don't," she said, surprising herself. "I could use a sounding board."
"If you say so," Luke said. "It's about Han, isn't it."
"Is it
that
obvious?" Leia shot him a startled look. "Or is this a Jedi thing you learned?"
Luke shook his head. "Nothing like that. It's just - well, Chewie's been talking to me a lot lately. I think he's trying to recruit me."
Leia smiled. "I can see why. Having a Jedi Knight along would be a great help."
"I'm not a Jedi yet," he said quietly. "I rushed out to save you guys before I finished training. Almost got myself killed for it." He let out a depreciating chuckle. "And I told Yoda I could learn to be patient."
Leia gave him an ironic smile of her own. "Well, that makes two of us."
"It wasn't your fault, Leia. You had a tough decision to make in a short time. I don't think anyone could have done any better."
"Tell that to Command," Leia said bitterly. "I'm unofficially on probation, Luke. They don't trust me to lead troops right now."
"
What?
But surely they don't -"
"But they
do!
" Leia cried. "They don't say it, not out loud, but I can see them thinking it. That I lost my head because of Han, and that's why I went in without proper intel. They think I'm a foolish girl who can't think under pressure and I'm too young to be a leader and three men are in bacta tanks because of my mistake and I'll never see Han again and, and, and -"
Hot tears flowed down her cheeks as her voice broke into uncontrollable sobs. She felt her self-control crumble under the tide of emotions. For the first time in ages she was just a young woman whose couldn't keep the world from falling apart around her.
And then something warm wrapped itself around her, something strong and comforting and impervious to the worst the galaxy could throw at her. It felt like the touch of someone long gone, someone whose embrace she barely remembered any more.
". . . Papa?"
"No," Luke said. "It's just me."
Leia looked up, startled, and her face reddened as she realized she'd been crying into Luke's shirt. His arms were around her like the wings of a parent bird over its eggs.
"Um . . . are you feeling better?" he asked after the longest ten seconds Leia had ever experienced.
"Uh, yes. Much better. Thank you, Luke."
They backed away from each other awkwardly. Luke had a puzzled look on his face, as though he couldn't believe he just did that. Leia suspected a similar expression was on her face.
When was the last time I let my guard down like that?
"Was that a Jedi thing you just did?" she asked.
"I - I don't know. It might have been. It just seemed like the right thing to do."
"Oh." And she was nearly knocked down when realization struck. It was
that
simple. "
Oh.
"
"Oh what?"
She flashed him a genuine smile. "I'm going after Han, Luke. Even if I have to pry authorization from Command with pincers."
Luke blinked, nonplussed at her change in attitude. "That's good to know. But if you don't mind me asking -"
"It's very simple. I'm doing it because it's the right thing to do." Not because she felt guilty, or to prove she wasn't a failure, or even because she wanted so desperately to hear Han say "I know" again. The Rebel Alliance was an alliance of individual
people
, not organizations. Others may disagree with her assessment, but she felt certain this was what kept them apart from the Empire.
"Will you come with us?" she asked Luke.
"'Us'?"
"Chewie's coming, of course. And I think I can count on Lando as well. He's been itching for a chance to irritate Admiral Ackbar. They just don't get along, you know."
Without waiting for Luke's answer, she started walking at a brisk pace toward the more populated areas of the Rebel base.
"But we'll need a better plan than Chewie's frontal assault. Maybe I can negotiate through Threepio . . ."
There were still a million things that needed to be taken care of. It was probably going to be an uphill climb all the way. But it was no longer an impossible task.
"I'm coming for you, Han," she whispered.
And Force help anyone who tries to get in my way . . .

Very good!
I liked it very much.
I just have one minor question, though. Shouldn't Threepio (in the first part) have been calling Han, Captain Solo and not General? Han didn't actually become a General until he returned from Tatooine, at least in the movies. But if this story is AU, then I suppose it's fine. And if it's AU, can we have the rescue scene, too?

Brain: Now, Pinky, if by any chance you are captured during this mission, remember you are Gunther Heindriksen from Appenzell. You moved to Grindelwald to drive the cog train to Murren. Can you repeat that?
Pinky: Mmmm, no, Brain, don't think I can.

Oh . . .
drat
. I knew I missed something. Thanks for the heads-up!
EDIT:
Due to the rules of the challenge, this is only an AU in that it contradicts the EU. And since I'm stronger than the rabbit that just bit me, I'm afraid this story ends here.
EDIT 2:
I have just went through the fic and corrected all the "General"s I could find.

Oh man I am so jealous that I didn't write this!! I've been working on my epic with Han and Leia inolved with an OC and you gave me some solid connections to work with. Lazy, you're a genius!!
I loved this story and the AU you gave Han for his previous dealings with the Rebellion. That is your own AU, right? I loved Lando's smile freezing while his eyes darted. I visualized that so easily.
I give this a 10 out of a 10 because I'm not a judge and can be biased as all heck!! I hope that whomever you're passing this buck to picks up where you left off.

Great Viggie, Lazy. It had everything, humor, drama, touching moments, angst, etc. The backstory on Han and Lando definitely puts a spin on events, and that moment where Leia calls Luke "Papa" was especially poignant too.

:
You captured Leia's emotions really well.
Thank you! I was afraid I was putting too much of my own personal spin on things. It's nice to know I didn't make her OOC.
Healer_Leona
:
I liked how Chewie and Lando were wnating to get Han asap and the story that Lando related to Leia.
Lando's story is the one-minute version of A. C. Crispin's
Rebel Dawn
, carefully tailored to make Leia guilty. In case you're interested, RD is the third book of the
Han Solo Trilogy
(the first two are
The Paradise Snare
and
The Hutt Gambit
). I found it fascinating how Crispin managed to put all of Han's EU past together.
PS - I spent five minutes trying to figure out what "asap" was a typo of before realizing it was an acronym.
Elana
:
That scene with her and Luke was so sweet.
Glad you liked it!
Although I must confess, the
pouring out her feelings
->
breaking into tears
->
wordless hug
sequence is something I've done before in another fandom. I really need to think of some new scenes . . .
KELIA

Writing Chewie without word-for-word translations was fun. I think I like that part best.

Actually, no. See my reply to

I loved Lando's smile freezing while his eyes darted. I visualized that so easily.
Erm . . . this may make you change your mind about my fic, so I'm
highlight-to-read
ing it:
Since this fic is in third person limited, I couldn't get too deeply into Lando's thoughts. His "slip of the tongue" was 100% intentional and calculated to make Leia feel guilty. I know, I have a tendency to make Lando an uber-mentat or something.
I hope that whomever you're passing this buck to picks up where you left off.
I guess I'd better clarify that. My PM to
VaderLVR64
was merely a request for ideas on where to take the sequel. Being a control freak when it comes to writing stories, I don't
ever
pass the baton to
anybody
.

Constructive criticism, eh? Well...*exhales deeply*...um. That manipulative Lando. Sequel! Sequel! Sequel!
I think the Han Solo trilogy will be my next read. That back story is perfect for what I need in my epic.
Hope this is all constructive criticism enough!
