	Title: Of Angels and Stories Author: Idrelle_Miocovani Timeframe: pre-TPM, Anakin’s childhood Genre: general Characters: Anakin Skywalker Summary: Anakin first hears of angels. Or, Star Wars meet Greek Mythology! Notes: Before you go "What? Idrelle's posting in Before!" let me say that this is my second time posting in Before, since I don’t really know the material all that well. I’m slowly coming out of my cocoon. This is just a cute, short little story. VIGNETTE FOR THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 6 –12 The boy creeps into the back of the room unnoticed. He’s not supposed to be here. If he’s found, he knows his master will beat him. He doesn’t care. It’s worth the risk – the people who come here tell such interesting stories. His curiosity was long ago piqued by this interesting parade of people and he will always come here to listen to their stories. Anakin Skywalker likes stories. He has heard many in his short four years of life. They’re a way to escape the misery that surrounds his life. The young boy finds a corner close to a group of cloaked men and women. He recognizes them – they’ve been here before. He likes their stories. There is a man in the centre of the group. He is old, with a wrinkled face and long, matted grey hair. The boy moves closer excitedly. The old man always tells the best stories. The boy picks up his ears, trying to catch the group’s conversation. “…angels!” one is saying. “Angels!” another exclaims and there is laughter. “Tell us about angels, Marrick,” a woman says, resting her elbow on the table and leaning her head against her hand. The boy edges closer. He’s never heard about angels before. He decides that the name is a nice word – it has an intriguing, beautiful ring to it. The old man – or the Storyteller as Anakin has always thought of him – laughs a deep laugh. “Ancient mystic wars last week, angels this week. Whatever next, the Force?” There is a chuckle in his voice. “Angels it is. I shall tell you how they came to live on the moons of Iego.” Anakin grins and settles down closer to the group. He desperate to hear more about these intriguing beings. “Once, long ago,” the Storyteller begins, “angels lived in the trees of every planet. They were the guardians of trees, and of wildlife. They were beautiful creatures. They understood much about life, the galaxy and love – much more than we humans do. “The story I’m going to tell you takes place on a planet far away from here. It is the story about a young angel named Echo. “Echo was young, beautiful and lively. She yearned to find someone to love – and she eventually did. A young man called Narcissus, an ambassador from another planet, had arrived to discuss certain issues with the planet’s government. He was wandering through the forest when Echo found him. “The young angel believed he was the most handsome man she had ever met and insisted on following him…” Anakin listens, his eyes closing drowsily and he leaned against the wall. The story isn't his favourite type – one of those lovely, dovey, gushy romances that turned into tragedy. He prefers those with action and duels, especially those about flying. He has his heart set on becoming a pilot. He’s decided that one day, he’s going to fly away from the dusty planet he calls home. The story continues, telling them how Narcissus refuses Echo’s love and eventually Echo fades away, leaving nothing but her voice, forever echoing another’s words. Anakin doesn’t really understand this bit – how can anyone just fade away? He supposes it is the reason for echoes. That answer satisfies him. The story finishes by telling how all the angels felt Echo’s grief and turned to a life of solitude on the moons of Iego. Anakin finds the ending completely unsatisfying and wishes that the ending was better – like the ending to the stories his mother tells him. Still, he can’t help but wonder about the angels. As he drops off to sleep, his mind his filled with images of angels that he has created from the descriptions the Storyteller gave him. One has brown hair, brown eyes… beautiful. He wants to meet her. Maybe he could visit the moons of Iego someday and meet the angel. Or maybe the angel would come to him. He is asleep when a quiet voice calls his name. The young boy doesn’t even notice when his mother enters the room and picks him up. She strokes his hair as she carries him home. “Sleep well, Ani,” her soft voice murmurs to him. “Sleep and dream. There will be more stories tomorrow.” -----signature----- "Can I just run by my battle cry?" "As you run, as you fight the evil Lord Vader—" "I'll turn on my lightsaber, look him straight in the helmet and, to make you proud, I will yell out 'the Canadians are coming, the Canadians are coming!'" 	How sweet! I like how it was told in the present tense with simple, 4-year-old style language and ideas. That really got me into the scene and Anakin's mind. Cool way of tying in the myth of Narcissus! (I love mythology.) Very nice work, Idrelle! 	I love young Ani. It's so sad to watch TPM after seeing ROTS, reading between the lines , just heartbreaking that such a sweet kid will go on to become a monster (although after watching the PT I cannot think of Vader as a monster like I did and many CT fans did or still do or whatever,I cannot help but think of him as a victim, destiny's fool, a pawn in Palpatines shem.
