Episode 7
The New Enemy
It has been thirty years since the destruction of the Sith at the Battle of Endor. During the decades to follow, the Empire, and all its Remnants have since been eradicated. Out of the destruction and decay that once was the Empire, a new Republic has been forged. Still, enemies from every corner of the galaxy threaten its fragile state. The most serious of these threats, The Dark Jedi, secretly plot the fall of the Republic, and its protectors.
Less than five years after the events of Endor, several force sensitives, students of Master Skywalker, broke themselves away from the traditional Jedi philosophy. They mastered both the light and dark side of the force, combining them, enhancing their tools as a means to quench their never ending thirst for power. Over time, their numbers have grown, and now, their forces almost rival the Jedi of seven-thousand strong.
Without the same codes and structure the Sith had gone by, these force using rogues seemed twice as deadly, and a hundred times more abundant. Now they seek only to sow destruction so that they may one day rebuild the Empire in the image of the greatest Dark Jedi to ever have lived,

Bespin (Jedi Training Academy)
It had not taken long for the Imperial Remnants to release the cloud cities of Bespin. Once they did Luke Skywalker petitioned that one be given to the Jedi so that they could expand, and have multiple training facilities throughout the galaxy in an attempt to replenish their diminished numbers. The Republic quickly granted him permission for his plans to build a training facility there and turned over the rights to the very same cloud city Lando Calrissian once owned.
For twenty years now, this place has raised Jedi, forging new Knights that would one day seed the Republic. Most of the occupants consisted of Padawans, either Quarton, (still with master) or Markib (completed training under a master and awaiting the trials). Few masters actually lived on the cloud city, only enough to staff the educational aspect of the academy, never less than fifteen, and never more than twenty. Knights too were abundant on the cloud city. For every Quarton, there was his master, a knight trying to ascend from Herskan (with padawan) to Urden Plosk (a knight who has trained an apprentice to knight, brothers).
Now, during these times, there were as many Dark Jedi as there were Jedi Knights. Hidden throughout the galaxy, many training facilities just like the one on Bespin, existed with the purpose of escalating their powers so that they may dominate the galaxy and all its inferior races. Their leader, Shindor, a former student of Master Skywalker, has brought about a time of war between the two force using factions. Now the entire galaxy suffered its effects.
Two Markib padawans have just arrived on Bespin, and now await the trials to become Jedi Knights.
“This place is too grim”, Anakin Solo spoke as he watched the transport that brought them to Bespin climb and disappear into a plethora of clouds. “I never liked it”. The waning light of the systems primary had almost dissipated entirely. Lights on the landing pad runway sprang to life illuminating the area a little bit more. Anakin bent down and picked up his travel satchel.
The main entrance to the landing bay opened and two protocol droids ducked below the rising doors making their way toward the two Jedi. “You just feel that way because you know you father was frozen in carbonate here. Don’t worry, my father lost his hand here so I have the same distaste for this place as you do. I think that’s why our masters sent us here for our trials”, Ben Skywalker answered.
“Another test then. I truly am getting tired of all the tests. Haven’t we proven ourselves worthy yet?”.
The two protocol droids had finally reached the two students, “Patients friend, our time will come”, Skywalker spoke.
The lead droid extended a servomotor driven arm towards the two, then bowed its upper torso. “I am D135 and this is my colleague K002. We are at your service, how may we assist you?”.
“Must have had their memories wiped”, Anakin chuckled as he recognized the two droids that were assigned to himself and Ben during their previous time on Bespin.
“It’s a good thing two after what they experienced in the chemical bonding lab. I’ve got ten credits that say 135 blows a fuse when he recognizes who you are”.
“Hey that was not my fault”, Anakin spoke pointing his finger toward Ben, a gesture he had picked up from his father.
“You took out half the lab”, Ben was not able to repress the urge to laugh as he spoke.
“That was not my fault”.
“I hear they never rebuilt that room. They just sealed it off and put up a sign, Anakin’s Folly”, Ben busted with full laughter now. “135 fell like a rock. How many kilometers was it? Two hundred and fifty he said? Lost both legs and an arm on impact. Scorched from one end to the other. All I remember is the fire swimming through the air. You should have known iridium was combustible, and that it was lighter than Bespin air”.
“Excuse me Sir”, the protocol droid turned to young Anakin who did not seem amused, “Might I enquire as to what the Master is referring to? It seems to be quite entertaining. Perhaps it would serve as a good recantation of humorous events here which I could use to amuse the younglings under my care”.
Ben feel to the ground at hearing the droids request, laughing almost hysterically.
“It was not my fault”, Anakin replied to the droid. “The vials were miss marked”.
“Sure stick to the old story”.
“Its true, a Jedi does not lie”.
Returning to his feet, Ben gave a soft, kind nod of understanding towards his friend and cousin, “I believe you. But it was still a…. gas”, and then returned to chuckling, “You caught that one right? A gas?”.
Anakin handed the droid his travel satchel, “Just show us to our rooms and that will be all. We are pretty tired from the trip. We need to meditate”.
“As you wish”. The two padawans fell in behind the gun metal blue protocol droids and entered the training center. The abundant walls of ivory white gave a calming feeling to all new occupants, not to Anakin and Ben though. They had been here before and their ties to the force allowed them to relive their fathers tragedies in the form of their dreams. Ben fought exhausted and tirelessly against his grandfather Darth Vader who easily evaded his attacks as if he were toying with him. Anakin stood chained saying his goodbyes to his mother as the mechanical lift lowered him into the freezing chamber.
The nightmares were constant on Bespin. Master Skywalker told the two that it was the forces way of telling its history. He told them of other padawans who had returned to a place where a family member had suffered, and that those padawans and knights alike all had similar experiences.
“By the Force”, a voice called out from ahead. Jedi Master Kam Solusar hurried to meet the two. He looked over young Ben Skywalker. Even though he was only twenty, he had exceeded his fathers height now by two inches at least, yet he was still as slender as his mother Mara. Both students wore their hair cropped in the old fashion of the padawans who came to be under the Republic of old, with a long braid marking their years of study and servitude.
He grasped Anakin’s hand and looked him over also. The young man was a spitting image of his father, minus the ragged out mess atop his head. Anakin, though almost a year older than Ben, was further behind in the force. But like his father he was an exceptional pilot, and exceeded young Skywalker in that respect.
Both padawans dressed in the same garments of the Jedi of old, except for the robe which they had not yet earned. It was decided that it be given once a Markib passed the trials. That way all would know of the padawans ascension to knight.
“It is great to have you here with us”, Master Solusar, one of the leading Jedi Masters of Bespin continued. “I will inform Master Streen of your arrival. Neither of us have seen you two since you were half your heights. We are glad that the force has lead you here for your trials”. The master stopped, bringing his hand up to cup his chin. “I sense you two have reservations about your trials being held here on Bespin. I hope it has nothing to do with Master Streen or I”.
The two padawans shook their heads simultaneously, “No master. This place just brings up bad feelings for the both of us”.
“And that is why it had to be Bespin. A padawans final trial is to face one’s self. To do so you must face your fears. It is a look inward through the force. A lot of padawans have not liked what they’ve seen, and this step ended their quest to become a true Jedi. Knights of old once called this step “the only truth”. Whatever becomes of this trial is for you alone. No one else need know what happens. Once it is over, we will know, we will know where you stand in the force and we will know if you intend to follow the path of the Jedi”.
Anakin, always hesitant to heed patience, voiced his concerns, “How long will it take”.
The old master shook his head as if he was expecting the question. “Time is not the concern here young learner. My trail went on for…”, he looked towards the ceiling as he pondered the exact number, “seventeen days I believe. I’m not sure though. I was in a deep meditative state. It only seemed like a few hours to me”.
The five of them continued to make their way down the hall to where the new arrivals had been assigned quarters. Master Solusar said his goodbyes and promised to see them in the morning, before their trials were to begin.
Anakin and Ben returned their gratitude with a bow of the head as he departed. The cloud city was quiet now, its occupants were settling in for the night. Soon a new day would arise signaled by the systems primary. Then the two friends, cousins, would enter into their quest to become Jedi.

Coruscant
A single tear moistened the left cheek of Mara Jade Skywalker as she read over the log entry for the third time.
In the years that passed the fall of the Empire it had been the Jedi’s primary goal to track down whatever information they could on the Jedi of old. Holocrons were found in the Imperial city, along with holographic narratives and literature, and many more abundant sources. The new order tried its to compile all the data and make it accessible for all the training outposts. As time went on, it became clear that they had not gathered all there was to know about the force and its teachings. Therefore the search for knowledge continued.
It was Mara’s idea that lead to her own current dismay. She approached Luke believing that if the former Emperor wanted to destroy the Jedi, then he must have had vast knowledge of the way they worked and how they were trained. She told him that in her time as The Emperor’s Hand, she had come to know the Sith lord, and she knew how much of a student he was. The Emperor was known to study his adversaries very intently. The people he ordered her to find or harm, he knew everything about them, from their upbringing to their daily schedules. Luke had attributed this to Sidious’s amazing strength in force sight, allowing him to see things days, years, even centuries in advance. Mara countered by telling Luke of the large network of spies that reported directly to the Emperor, saying that it was not just his ability in the force that made him so knowledgeable, but his resolve to know his enemy. She then asked to be allowed to review the Emperor’s personal files. Mara believed that he kept all the information he had accumulated there. She also passionately believed that there would be information on the Knights of the Old Republic, perhaps secrets that only his cache now had.
Luke feared that they might find something else, something more dangerous. He believed that the Emperor kept Sith teachings around so that he could help his father Anakin advance himself in the ways of the dark side. So, shortly after the fall of the Empire, he had the Emperor’s belongings sealed away in the Jedi Temple. There he knew it would be safe, and he knew he himself could protect it if someone were to try and steal it. The thought of destroying it did cross his mind, however members of the New Republic, perhaps still loyal to the Empire, objected to that course of action. Their reasoning was that it might be of use one day, should one of the Emperor’s catastrophic inventions be rebuilt or resurface somehow. Several members also voiced that it was an important part of the galaxies history, and should not be destroyed. In compliance with the council’s wishes, as a Jedi would, Luke obeyed. The council agreed that it was too soon to deluge into the cache. They also agreed on the threat it posed, therefore they were delighted to let Luke secure it in the Temple.
After a long lull where no new sources of information were found, Luke agreed to let Mara, a Jedi Master now, search through her old masters belongings and logs.
During her search Mara came across a familiar name, Xio Jade, the name of her mother. She knew very little of her mother. She was taken from her at an early age and trained to serve the Emperor, as her readings had uncovered, just as her mother did. This information intrigued her, and over time she abandoned her search for knowledge on the Jedi and instead sought information on Xio.
Her mother too, was force sensitive. It was logged that she was the most powerful female that the Emperor had come across. Her midiochlorine count verified that she was indeed capable of such power. Then the logs entailed how he slowly and broke her, and molded her into the first Emperor’s Hand. It noted the pleasure he took in every tiny little crack in her mental fiber that he was able to create.
As she read on their time passed on the pages and her reading almost became visible memories. She became more docile, and he became more intrigued with her physique. As she read on, she hit a section she could not bear to pass.
I am no longer as youthful as I use to be. I feel the urge to continue my line. All who gain power will eventually lose it, this I know, but if proper planning is in place, perhaps one can regain that power in the form of another. I now have a suitable candidate for procreation, and soon I shall have a successor.
More tears began to seep from the corner of her eyes, as she knew what the next entry would reveal. She had not been able to find the strength to continue on, but she knew she must. She had to know. Trembling, cautiously, she advanced to the next entry.
A girl. A vile, disgusting, portrayal of pathetic life. I have seeded failure, not a successor, a son, but a weak version of human incompetence. Perhaps Xio Jade was not as I had foreseen her to be. She has vanished after learning of the planned termination. I will find her, but I will not try again. She will die, and by my hand. Incompetence……
The entry was not as revealing as she hoped it would be. She quickly opened the next one in her file.
Jade has been found. It took longer than expected, but she could not evade my network. Unfortunately, she has delivered my offspring. Mara, I believe is what she’s calling the abomination. It is no matter though, once I am through with Xio, I will need a new Hand….
A huffing sigh escaped Mara’s lips as more tears compounded her vision. It was as she had come to expect through her research. She was the child of Palpatine. If news of this were to get out, who knows what would become of it. The Son of Vader married to the daughter of Palpatine. The politicians alone would be so scared of this that they would do their best to dismantle the Jedi Order themselves. Then there was Ben. He had never sat well knowing he was the grandson of the most evil villain The Jedi had ever known. The news that he was also the grandson of the greatest oppressor of the galaxy could in fact tear him in two. And his trials were set to begin in the Bespin morning, which was now just a few hours away.
She closed the log. Mara wanted nothing to do with anymore unknown horrors it might contain. Luke was right. She should not have accessed the cache. She pulled her robe around her tight as her sorrow took voice in a soft cry.
Within minutes Luke had entered the room where Mara sat, face in hands. He hesitated to approach her feeling her desire to be alone, “What is wrong? What have you found out?”. She brought her head up revealing an aging face covered with moisture. Luke again searched his feelings, “You feel like you cannot tell me”. He moved towards her, “So be it then”, he spoke placing his hands on her shoulders, “you will, when you are ready". The Jedi Master furrowed his brow as he peered into her eyes, "I sense you want to keep what you have found secret, it holds a personal pain you need to protect. I will not hound you for it, in fact I will never speak of this again, you need not worry". He knew he need to sooth her in her current state. "In time, when you come to peace with it, I hope you will reveal it to me though”. Again he sensed her emotion and shook his head in a negative responce, “I do not need to understand”, he spoke as if reading her mind, something she always took comfort in with Luke, “I only want to help you”.
“It has the potential to destroy all that you have worked for. At the very least it will tarnish the galaxies view of the Jedi, and Ben…”, her eyes released more water as she gazed at him, “It will hurt him most of all”.
“Then hold what you know”, Luke extended a hand to help Mara out of her chair. “Our son will forever be my first priority”. He felt her desire to be near him, “We will go to Bespin as soon as we can. We will get there to meet him when he finishes the trial”. He pulled her up from her seat and into his arms. “Come, you look like you could use a cup of caf”. He scanned over the room, “I will have this place sealed up immediately”.
Mara eased out of his clutch and began making her way towards the door. Anger threatened to breach her demeanor as she recalled her father’s intention to murder her mother. She knew Luke felt its brief occurrence, a quick call for hatred, the calling from the dark side. Luke nodded his head as he once again felt her desires, “It will be done. The Senate will never know of its destruction”.

RE: Episode VII (The New Enemy)
Bespin Atmosphere
Dawn was about to crest the planet Bespin. The cloud city sat in the waning darkness of night, still, asleep. Now was the time to strike. During the night ships had taken up a perimeter around the upper atmosphere above the cloud city and dispatched satellites capable of raining down heavy fire power on the city. The last one had been deployed and reported in as operational.
Spiden, second in command of the Dark JedI had just received notification of the final placement. He had been sent to Bespin to steal the training facility’s holocron, and he would do just that.
He reached for the communications panel located in the ships hanger bay and turned it on. “Broadcast this broadband to all transports”.
“Yes Sir”, the communications officer replied from the bridge.
“The time is now. Our primary target is the holocron located in the central nexus of the cloud city beneath us. You have all been instructed on what to do. Take as many Jedi as you can. Show no mercy leave no one you encounter alive. As soon as it is reported that we have secured the holocron, retreat to your ships. This is the first step in establishing the order our hero Darth Vader wished to bring into existence. In time we will rule the galaxy and cleanse it of the unworthy. Remember the price of failure. Do your jobs and you will be rewarded”, he flicked off the comms device and then turned to the fifty Dark Jedi in the air lock with him. “Prepare to descend”.
All fifty, including Spiden, checked to make sure the jet packs they wore were properly secured, then placed their black helmets over their head. The helmets were very similar to the one Vader had worn during his time with the Empire. It was a tribute to their fallen hero, and a message that he still lived on inside them.
The air locks quickly fastened as all oxygen was taken from the room. The blast doors to the bay slowly crept open. Beneath, thick clouds bumbled about in a dark grey sky. Spiden lead his troops to the end of the bay, looked down towards his target and then gave a thumbs up to the men.
In waves they descended from the large transports, one by one igniting their packs and guiding themselves towards the sleeping city. The Jedi were unprepared and it would be a slaughter.
Several hundred landed on the city’s exterior. The sun would break the horizon in a matter of minutes. Spiden moved his men towards a hatch on the landing pad that they had arrived on. He pulled out his lightsaber ignited it and began carving a hole in it. Several other Dark Jedi also took out their sabers and began helping him.
Once the hole was created two men tossed in concussion grenades. The explosion rocked the corridor. The mob entered. Droids were spread about, most in pieces now unsalvageable. Young padawans exited their rooms curious to see what was transpiring, only to be struck down by the Dark Jedi. Some came out prepared to fight and began to mount a resistance, but they were out numbered and the Dark Jedi eventually over took them.
Alarm sirens broke the silence to the undisturbed areas of the cloud city. The remaining Jedi would now be alerted to the Dark Jedi’s presence. It was time to enter the second phase of the attack. Spiden retrieved the comms. device from his belt. “Fire all satellite batteries at once. Do as much destruction as you can”.
****
The sirens brought Ben Skywalker out of a much needed rest. He had not slept well that night due to his up coming trial, not knowing what he would face. He had not been on Bespin in quite sometime, but he was sure that the siren was not standard protocol. Still groggy from a restless night he ruffled his short hair as he sat up. “Anakin, what in the name of the force is going on?”.
Still laying covered in his bed Anakin made no attempt to get up. “I don’t know, but it sure is a mean trick to play on someone who is about to undergo the trials”.
Before he had the chance to finish his statement something violently rocked the level they were quartered on. Anakin quickly sat up, “That certainly is not normal”.
Another blast rocked the facility above.
Ben was on his feet now fastening his boots. Anakin stood and did the same. Ben felt through the force to get a sense of others feelings. Darkness surrounded him. “I think we are under attack”, he spoke as he grabbed his lightsaber.
“From who? Who would attack the facility?”.
“I don’t know but we should go and find out”.
“I’m right behind you”.
The two left their stateroom and entered the hallway. There they saw younger padawans battling men and aliens in masks that resembled the one they had seen in holos on Ben’s grandfather during the time of the Empire. Anakin and Ben split up, both rushing off to help the younger, less experienced padawans in their defense.
Ben lit his blue saber just in time to catch a killing blow meant for the younger padawan. He pushed the opposing green blade high into the air and then swept his blue blade through the attackers midsection, then moved to the next assailant.
On the opposite end of the hallway Anakin’s purple blade held off two attackers as the two padawans who had been defending there made a retreat. He defended himself with a high guard waiting for one of his opponents to make a mistake. Once he did Anakin planted a boot in his chest and sent him to his back. The micro-second of hesitation on the other attackers part was all he needed. Seeing the opening Anakin placed the tip of his blade in the aliens chest, sending it to his knees. Anakin moved quickly to strike down the grounded man. He attempted to roll away, but was unsuccessful as Anakin slashed through his back.
Side slipping the attackers downward strike Ben was able to catch the armpit of the attackers arm. He rolled away and brought his lightsaber to where his hand had just been severing the mans arm. Rolling back to face him Ben swung for his head, decapitating him. He looked down the hall to see how Anakin was faring only to find him trotting towards him with two padawans in toe.
“I’ve got a bad feeling about this”, Ben spoke as the three arrived.
“Me too”, Anakin replied. “If they got this far in…”
“They will be everywhere”, Ben answered finishing off the sentence. “Come on we need to help”, he commanded.
“Some trial”, Anakin replied as he fell in behind Ben.
The five made their way down the hall into a large open floor room. There over twenty lightsaber battles were underway. The facility was under attack, though neither Anakin nor Ben could find a reason why the Dark Jedi would make such a bold move. Without hesitation the five padawans rushed into the fray.
***
Spiden ruthlessly made his way to the central nexus of the cloud city. His forces had mainly encountered padawans, very few knights, but they had dwindled his attack group to less than half. His men were not as well trained as he thought they were. He followed the directions on the data pad he carried, a few more turns and they would be in the nexus. A kinght and his padawan twi’elk jumped out in front of them. Spiden raised his empty hand as lightning spewed from his fingertips. The two Jedi never had a chance. Their lifeless bodies fell to the floor reeling of smoke from their scorched flesh.
Two of his men placed charges on the blast door that secured the nexus. The door melted away in the heat of the controlled blast. There in front of the cubed holocron stood one knight, alone in his cloak.
“I thought you might be after this”, he spoke. “I may be old, but I will not be that easy to kill. If it is the holocron you seek, you will have to do just that”.
***
It pained Kam to stay enclosed behind the nexus’s blast doors while the other Jedi defended the cloud city, but he had a feeling that they were after the holocron. It was the only logical asset on Bespin they could be after. He sensed an approaching coldness, an impending blast. He quickly stepped back from the blast door just in time to stay unscathed from it exploding.
There before him stood ten figures, all wearing a version of the mask Vader once wore. He lowered the hood of his cloak, “I thought you might be after this”. He surveyed the attackers for a second as nine of them moved to out flank him. “I may be old, but I will not be that easy to kill”. He looked off toward the one Dark Jedi who stood back allowing the others to come forward first. “If it is the holocron you seek, you will have to do just that”. He pulled two lightsabers from his belt and prepared himself for battle.
Four of he attackers slid forward, two from the left and two more from the right. Kam caught the attacks on his blue blades and turned them outwards as he slid between the two pronged attack. He managed to cut down two of them as they repositioned themselves to press.
Three others quickly joined in. Kam let go of himself and gave in completely to the force. He moved about at furious speeds catching and dodging attacks. He had never defended himself from five attackers before and he was sure he could not hold out for long. As for the moment, the force was with him guiding his every move.
Capitalizing on an attackers mistake, Kam’s saber found flesh, reducing his foes to four. Four was a slightly more manageable number than five, but still the odds nor time where in his favor.
He caught another attacker on the low guard, slamming his blade into the floor, then bringing his other saber into his chest for the kill.
Kam found his triumph short lived though as he felt a burn penetrate his ribcage from his right side, then out his left. He turned to face his attacker. There stood the one who had stayed back at the beginning. Kam had failed. He felt the life rushing out of him as the Dark JedI pulled his saber from Kam’s chest. He slumped to the ground, landing on his knees. His head fell to the floor and he could feel the coldness on his forehead. The last thing he saw before life left him completely was the black boots of his killer walking to where the holocron lay.
***
Spiden watched the master fall to the floor before him. He was strong in the force and well trained in lightsaber techniques, but that did not matter now, he was dead. He made his way to the holocron and pulled it from its housing. Then he pulled out his comms. “Order the retreat. The package is secured. Make way back to the transports before they have time to launch what fighters they have left here”.
He turned and nodded to the three remaining men, “Master Shindor will be pleased. Let us go home”.
