Closer

Kellan's fingers were bone-white with tension as she pointed her blaster at Dirmac's approaching form. "Any closer and I'll shoot!" she yelled, knowing it was an empty threat. The Jedi's reflexes were quick enough to dodge blaster bolts even at this range.

Besides, she had never actually killed anyone before. Not with her own hands, anyway. Her reputation as a bloodthirsty pirate was mainly the product of her overenthusiastic underlings. It was usually enough to make people back down without a fight.

Not so for this Jedi. She and Dirmac had met years ago, when she was just an apprentice tech on Kalazar who just happened to service his starfighter. Like a fool she'd fallen head over heels in love with him, only to be told gently that the Jedi did not enter romantic relationships.

And that would - or should - have been the end of their not-quite-relationship. Kellan should have spent a week or so crying over her broken heart, then picked up the pieces and went on with her life.

But she hadn't.

"Stay away from me!" A small voice in her head, perhaps the last shred of calm sanity still remaining, noted how ironic it was. All these years, she'd been trying to get closer to the Jedi.

She'd tried exotic meditation techniques to get in touch with the Force and, when that failed, various mind-expanding pharmaceuticals to jump-start her consciousness. Some of those drugs had been illegal, so to acquire them she'd had to do business with shady individuals. From there it had been a small step to the realization that since Dirmac was a Jedi and therefore a keeper of the peace, he would be there where peace wasn't.

So, in her drug-addled state of confusion, she had joined a pirate gang. And, in a way, this had worked.

"Don't come any closer!" she screamed. At this distance, both of them were still half-hidden in shadows. She didn't want him to see what she had become. Or was it that she didn't want to see the contempt in his face?

When the fog clouding her mind had cleared, Kellan had found herself in the middle of a blood feud. The only way out had been over a mountain of corpses. Halfway up she'd made the mistake of looking back over her shoulder and seeing the men following her. She had known, right there and then, that she couldn't leave them behind.

Even pirates need a leader to show them the way. Intentional or otherwise - in their eyes if not her own - Kellan had become that leader.

And now she was a pirate in Dirmac's eyes as well.

"Don't come any closer," she repeated hoarsely. She was clutching the blaster so tightly it trembled in her hands. A nervous twitch of her finger would be enough to fire the weapon.

But he kept on walking towards her, his hands spread open in what might have been a gesture of peace. He didn't even stop when the blaster's laser emitter was a hand's breadth away from his chest, but continued forward until Kellan could almost feel his heart beating, as though her blaster was an extension of her body. Then slowly, his large hands wrapped around hers and gently pulled the blaster from her shaking fingers.

"You're under arrest," he said softly. And just as gently, he bound her wrists in a pair of restraining cuffs.

She turned her face toward her feet, away from his eyes. Kellan heard her voice break as tears of relief ran down her cheeks. "I hate you," she whispered.

She looked up when she felt Dirmac's hands on her shoulders. Then he leaned down and, in a most un-Jedi-like manner, kissed her. Her mind was still reeling when he smiled sadly and said, "I know."

Aaaaah, what a nice last line. The poor woman, she spent her whole life pursuing the Jedi and it was all for a kiss.

I must agree it was an amazing way to end it. I really enjoyed it. See if you can come up with another part to this, even though it's a viggie, it would be a good story.

ardavenport: Aaaaah, what a nice last line.
padmay_skywalker: it was an amazing way to end it.

Just in case you haven't seen the "original":
Covax posted:
Sith Gal in hancuffs: I hate you.

Dude who happens to love Sith gal: I know.
When I first saw that, I knew I had to use it at the end (or the climax - but they're pretty much the same thing in viggies, eh?).

ardavenport: The poor woman, she spent her whole life pursuing the Jedi and it was all for a kiss.

Oh, I don't know . . . maybe there's a "somethingly ever after" to this.

*peers nervously at the long-eared shadows*

padmay_skywalker: See if you can come up with another part to this

Er . . . are you suggesting a sequel? Filling out the back story? Writing Jedi whatshisname's POV?

*beats away a swarm of plot bunnies* Back! Back, I say!

Layren: Never saw this particular fanfilm

Neither did I, actually. I think it's just a sample of paraphrased SW dialogue Covax thought up.

And as always - though I fear this line is getting old - thanks to everyone who read this fic. happy

Poor girl. So much time wasted chasing after a dream.

Lovely imagery.

Read the post this came from. I love when something inspires a bunny like this.

Healer_Leona: Poor girl. So much time wasted chasing after a dream.

Y'know, I'm beginning to feel really guilty about doing that to her. And the rabbits are biting . . .

I love when something inspires a bunny like this.

So do I, although I wish they would stop coming at me in twos and threes. tongue

Thanks for reading!

shock sad cry That can't be it! In a weird way, she got what she wanted, and I suppose it's too much to hope for a "real" happy ending. tongue

That was a very unique and well written vignette. It was all great, but the ending was the best part. Very well done. applause

JadeSolo: In a weird way, she got what she wanted

*struggles not to post the saying about wishes*

I suppose it's too much to hope for a "real" happy ending.

After all she did and allowed to happen since joining the pirates - I suppose not. However, I have a soft spot for female techs and I'm trying to figure out a way to make it happen.

Just-Plain-Shmi: That was a very unique and well written vignette.

Thank you! I seem to be making a niche for myself as a writer of weird stuff. happy

It was all great, but the ending was the best part.

Again, credits go to Covax, whose two lines of dialogue made this vig burst into existence.
