"Ani, wake up!" The voice was soft, yet urgent, rocking him slightly.
Eight-year-old Anakin Skywalker groaned softly, rolling over on his side in a feeble attempt to get away from the voice, which was starting to irritate him, as the shaking grew in intensity.
"Mom, it's not time to get up yet, it's only," he groggily opened one azure eye, glancing at the clock, "Three in the morning! Watto doesn't need me till Six!" he trailed off, returning back to that pleasant dreamland, where he was a Jedi, wielding one of those laser swords while freeing all the slaves on Tatooine.
The voice giggled softly, "Ani, I'm not your mom!"
But as quickly humor came, it went away, "But I really do need for you to wake up," the voice finished softly.
Anakin paused quizzically, midstep in his dream. If it wasn't his mother, who was it?
This better be good!
he thought reluctantly as he exited his dream and opened his eyes to be greeted by the reality of his own slavery, and the sight of a sheepishly smiling human slave girl.
Anakin stumbling sat up, blearily rubbing one eye, "Dysis Aray, you better have a good explanation for waking me up so early," He said good naturedly, though not without the intention of pain behind it.
Dysis was one of his best friends back when he and his mother were owned by Gardulla the Hutt. They were the only ones there who were of the same age, and they got very close over the course of five years.
Dysis smiled guiltily, running a hand through her short ebony hair. "Okay Skywalker, if I tell you, you have to swear on that piece of scrap metal out there that you call a podracer that you won't tell a soul," She said softly, her serious hazel eyes boring into Anakin's blue ones.
"Don't worry, my lips are sealed," he replied, letting loose a huge yawn.
Dysis took a shaky breath and solemnly proclaimed, "My dad is missing."
Anakin's eyes grew to the size of the dome of a R2 model.
"When did this happen? Was he kidnapped? Did he run away? How did Gardulla take it?" he asked anxiously, fully awake.
Dysis put a wry smile on her face. "Slow it down Skywalker; I can't answer all those questions at once. But yes, I think he did run away." She paused here, taking a shuddering breath.
"When I woke up a few hours ago, all of his belongings were gone. He didn't even leave me a note," she concluded sadly, tears welling up in her eyes. She looked up, only to find Anakin missing.
"Anakin?" she asked hoarsely, her voice rising up in panic.
Anakin returned back, draping a light cloak around him. However, when he saw the sight of Dysis crying, he rushed over and lightly hugged her
"I'm here, Dyie,' He said softly, using the affectionate childhood name that he had for her. "Don't you dare cry on me though, I will find your father," He finished sternly. Well, as stern as he could get for an eight-year-old.
Dysis paled and sat back, "I'm coming with you! You can't go alone!" she exclaimed angrily.
Anakin opened his mouth in protest, but then closed it, recognizing the look on Dysis' face. It was the exact same face his mother gave him when he came home all dirty from racing pods. He sighed, "Sure, but won't Gardulla go 'Boom!' if you two don't get back on time?"
Dysis paused, her back facing Anakin.
"I won't let it happen," She said quietly.
============
"Dad! Mr. Aray! Dad! Where are you?!" these words merged together underneath the slowly lightening sunrise of the Tatooine desert.
Dysis collapsed, exhausted from all the shouting. "We're out of time now, Ani." She said softly.
Anakin looked at her, eyes widening. "What do you mean?" he asked anxiously, almost dreading to hear the answer.
She looked up, her hazel eyes glinting with unshed tears. "My time is up," she said simply, "It's punishment for not being back in that Hell that I live in."
She brushed her fingers lightly against the fine grains of sand, while Anakin looked on, his heart bursting with unknown emotions. He knew that Dysis always hated sand, but yet here she was, almost lovingly brushing her fingers against it.
"Ani," she said softly, looking at his eyes with a defeated look on her face. "I don't want to go back. I don't want any more whippings, another day of starvation. I don't want to live without my father!" she sobbed. "I would rather stay here and be blown into pieces!" she grabbed fistfuls of sand and threw it at the rising sun.
"Dyie," Anakin said softly, wanting to help his young friend in any way he possibly could ; but he knew there was nothing he could do now to stop fate from happening.
"Don't forget me, Skywalker. Don't tell anyone that it was my choice to stay here, instead of escaping." She smiled wryly.
"Now go home."
"Are you craz-", he started, stepping towards her.
"Go!" she positively roared.
Anakin hesitated, and then turned back; walking back towards slavery, back to being mere property.
As he neared the junkyard, he felt an explosion that seemed to vibrate through the air, shouting of pain, blood, and strangely yet, freedom.
He let a tear slip down. "Don't worry, Dyie, my lips are sealed. And someday, I will become so powerful that I'll be able to stop death and free all the slaves,¨ he trailed off, looking at the twin suns of Tatooine.
Even though the suns would keep on rising and setting, it wouldn't change the fact that the lips of the young slave girl, Dysis Aray, were sealed for eternity.

Aww, what a sad little fic. Poor Ani and Dysis. You managed to give a little glimpse into the mind of a young slave.
Even though the suns would keep on rising and setting, it wouldn't change the fact that the lips of the young slave girl, Dysis Aray, were sealed for eternity.
Good stuff here.
Nice challenge response.

wow. .that was so sad.. tragic
It explains why Anakin's first thought would be about going back to free the slaves.
Really great job! :-)

The relationship that has been created in this unique universe is so memorable, and so beautiful. It makes the heart ache. As far as I'm concerned, it's canon.~Ratna on the Noelaverse

What a sad story.
I watched 'Ashanti' when I was very young and it left a deep, scarring impact on me. This story reminded me of it.

Upset about the casting for the Last Airbender movies?
Write to Paramount about it.
