"Threads of a Broken Heart"
Spyman290
Summary: During the Clone Wars Obi-Wan receives comm call that will change his life. The song is ‘What Hurts the Most’ by Rascal Flatts. This was done for the Country Music Songfic Challenge.
Timeframe: Clone Wars
Disclaimer: Guess what? I don’t own Star Wars, Star Wars owns me (kinda frightening isn't it!)
Many thanks to Flowerlady for the beta!
There is now a lull in the battle, and I hear someone’s voice, “General…”
“Over here.”
“Sir, incoming comm for you on channel V6R14.”
“Thank you, Cody.”
Listening to the rain, I input the code. As I wait for the connection, I wonder about the report and why it is being sent over one of the more secure Jedi only channels. The last time a message came to me like this, there were problems and some close friends of mine died.
I can take the rain on the roof
Of this empty house
That don't bother me
I can take a few tears now and then
And just let 'em out
It takes a long time for the comm to connect and my mind wanders back to Siri. I wonder how she’s doing and where she is this cycle.
I'm not afraid to cry
Every once in a while
Even though, going on
With you gone
Still upsets me
I try to listen to the reports of more places lost and people dead. Some of them are close to me, while some are not, but I can’t help but feel a sense of dread filling me faster and faster.
There are days
Every now and again
I pretend I'm okay
But that's not what gets me.
“General, I regret to inform you that General Tachi was severely wounded on the battlefield. We extracted her but……”
“But what?” I ask, as my dread hits its utmost. I start to blank out all that’s going on around me, fearing the worst, as I wait for him to finish his sentence.
“But she died before we could get her any medical help.”
“Are you sure?” I ask my voice low and threatening as I try to cover how much this hurts me.
“Sir, I helped get her as far as we could. But she just…Sir, she asked me to tell you that she was sorry and she loved you. I have a holo log of it if you wish to see it.”
“Yes, please send it over.”
What hurts the most
Was being so close
And having so much to say (much to say)
And watching you walk away
As the holo starts transferring, tears start to fall from my eyes. I think about the last time we said good-bye to each other and how we ignored the feelings we had for each other. Watching her walk towards the transport that would take her to her next mission, I was still trying to convince myself that Jedi aren’t to have these kinds of feelings.
And never knowing
What could have been
And not seeing that loving you
Is what I was trying to do
As I wait for the big holo file to download on the slow connection, I go on rounds to make sure everything gets done the way it should.
It's hard to deal
With the pain 'a losing you
Everywhere I go
But I'm doing it
As I take one report after the next, I try to keep a smile on my face and to keep up the morale, but it’s nothing like the one that should be on my face. I should be wearing the expression that spoke of hope, like the one that was on my face before the comm.
It's hard to force that smile
When I see our old friends and I'm alone
“General your transport is ready to take you back to the Temple for her funeral.”
Again, I put on the fake smile, as I thank Cody for his thoughtfulness. I board the transport, and before I know it, I’m back at the Temple. Many of my old friends, who were able to make it to the funeral, greeted me, all thankful to see me, while I forced the same smile on my face.
Still harder
Getting up, getting dressed
Living with this regret
I wake up the next morning and find it’s so hard to get out of bed and dressed for the funeral. My heart is in pieces on the floor as I find myself walking toward her favorite spot in the Room of a Thousand Fountains. Soon, I am sitting and reflecting to the peacefulness of the sounds that fill the room. After a while, I remember I hadn’t watched the holo the commander had sent.
I pull out my data pad, and slip in the chip. Pulling up the file and fast-forward to the spot the commander had marked, I start to watch.
****************************************************
“Commander, move up squad alpha on the right before they break through.”
“Right away, General.”
I watch as she moves in to fill a spot in the line. Before the droids break through, she is fighting brilliantly, and then it happened so fast, I had to back the holo up some to see it again. From what I could tell, she slipped on what I can only describe as black ice. As she lost her footing, several shots got through and hit her saber disabling it. Followed by a torrent of shots which hit her from ahead of her, mutilating her body.
I had to stop the recording for five minutes to get my emotions under control. I wanted to vomit, but got myself under control again. After a while, I hit play to watch the rest.
The commander and 2, or so, dozen other clones move quickly around her to protect her. Several of them pick up their general and move her back in the line. An extraction team is called, and less than a minute the ship appears. They get her in and are moving fast to get her to the med center, but about halfway there, she pulls the commander down and whispers a few things to him. The commander turns up the volume, allowing the microphone pick up her words. As tears stream down my face and my heart breaks, she struggles to speak. I can make out her what she is saying.
“Commander…” Siri says, but a hard cough interrupts her, “…please cont…” more coughs rake her body, but she continues to struggle with her words, “…please contact General…” another hard cough, “…Knobie. Tell him that I’m sorry and I…” her voice breaks a little and another cough threatens to take her breath,”…tell him I love him.”
She laid down her head and I could hear her last breath escape her body. There is a deathly silence aside from the throb of the engines, and then I hear the commander, the only other commander I know almost as well as Cody, say in a voice laden with emotion, “Yes, General, I promise I will do what you ask.”The holo ends, and for the next half hour, I cry out of grief and pain. Eventually, I slowly try to pull myself together for the funeral.
I walk to the funeral room and numbly watch the proceedings. Several of the others walk up to the burning pyre of ash to silently pay their last respects. Finally, as I take my turn, I think about all that I wish I would have said and done, and now would never be able to do.
But I know
If I could do it over
I would trade, give away
All the words that I say
In my heart, that I left unspoken
What hurts the most
Was being so close
And having so much to say (much to say)
And watching you walk away
And never knowing
What could have been
And not seeing that loving you
Is what I was trying to do (ooh)
What hurts the most
Was being so close
And having so much to say (much to say)
And watching you walk away
And never knowing
What could have been
And not seeing that loving you
Is what I was trying to do (ooh)

OMG. Just beautiful. I'm glad you linked me here! This was well thought out and organized, and it really twisted my stomach into knots, to be honest. Thanks for the read, and if you ever post another songfic or something like it, be sure to let me know.
