RE: 2008 Post-Fanfic Awards Survey
1. Should OCs be eligible to win a category multiple times in different stories?
b) No. My reasoning is that such a character would get a lot more exposure than other OC's, and exposure is a (too)
huge
part of the nomming and voting. I think this would give an OC an unfair advantage, though of course it is possible over-exposure would actually dilute the voting pool for that character and thus diminish a deserving OC's chance.
2. Should a minimum character count be required for a story to be eligible for Best Ensemble?
a) Yes
3. If you answered yes on question 2, what do you think the minimum number of characters should be?
d) 5+
4. Overall, how would you rate these awards on a scale of 1 to 10 (with 1 being poor, 5 being good, and 10 being excellent)?
10 for those parts I was able to attend.
5. Why did you give that answer?
Because I enjoyed them, that's why.
6. What is ONE thing you would change for next year's awards?
I like the idea of best child split into male and female as posted above, but I can think of nothing to change that is possible to change.
7. Do you think that a discussion where users would not be limited to one post should take place after this survey?
a) Yes - because there may be some great ideas that are yet to be posted meriting discussion

Everyone did their jobs well, the ceremony went smoothly and was entertaining, and it was overall a success
6. What is ONE thing you would change for next year's awards?
This is extremely counter-productive, but I cannot think of anything that should be changed

5. Why did you give that answer?
These were absolutely the best, smoothest awards I've ever seen. Bravo to everyone who worked on them.
6. What is ONE thing you would change for next year's awards?
I'd revisit the number of nominations that stories need to qualify. It was fine being upped for a couple years, but participation on the JC as a whole is down, and that was evident in the awards; IIRC there were only a couple categories in each era that didn't need the numbers lowered.
7. Do you think that a discussion where users would not be limited to one post should take place after this survey?
c) abstain - because I don't think there's enough to talk about to need a big discussion.

3. If you answered yes on question 2, what do you think the minimum number of characters should be?
b) 3+
4. Overall, how would you rate these awards on a scale of 1 to 10 (with 1 being poor, 5 being good, and 10 being excellent)?
10 for the ceremony parts I attended, 10 for the preparation work I saw in Resource, and 10 for the organization behind the scenes
5. Why did you give that answer?
The ceremonies flew by and everyone was cordial. The volunteers appeared to me to be staying on stop of updating lists in Resource. And I'm utterly impressed by the war room otherwise known as the Awards Forum - they did a great job keeping things together.
The one iffy spot I noticed was the number of noms required to qualify for the voting round. But hindsight is 20/20, so the volunteers did great in keeping up the past guidelines.
6. What is ONE thing you would change for next year's awards?
I was liked the idea of automating nominations and votes, where you go to a separate website, list your username, and then just click buttons next whatever nominee you want to vote for. But that takes a lot of prep work and technicaly mumbo jumbo. Plus, I like that the volunteers get to bond a bit backstage.
7. Do you think that a discussion where users would not be limited to one post should take place after this survey?
No (unless there are a lot of ties, or just no consensus at all)

The two in which I participated were very well organized and the third was entertaining. The overseers and volunteers were very professional this time around.

Well, my being forgotten as a volunteer until all the slots had been filled.

8
5. Why did you give that answer?
The awards process seemed to run smoothly and kept on schedule.
6. What is ONE thing you would change for next year's awards?
I wish, I wish, I WISH that there were another way to do the nominations. They take a lot of time for the volunteers to check and it seems that the most recent stories get nominated more than older ones. A list of all eligible stories might make it easier for people see what they want to nominate. And it also might make it easier for volunteers to check the nominations.
It would be nice if one of lazy's tools could be adapted to automatically harvest all possible eligible stories and have the links posted in a 'pre-nomination' thread?
Unless a story has either a first post or a last post date within the eligibility dates, it can't be eligible for an award. So, that list could be automatically generated, and automatically sorted by first post date and/or author. It could have:
- Thread title / Link
- Author
- first post date
- last post date
- number of replies
Any story with a first post date within the awards eligibility dates would not have won anything in previous years and would not need to be checked for that. They could be listed separately.
Any story with 6 or fewer replies would automatically be eligible for 'most underrated' though there still might be some that have more than 6 replies if there are author replies mixed in.
What's the down side? The initial list that could be automatically generated would be large. Maybe 1,200 to 1,400 threads for Saga and Beyond while maybe a more manageable 500 for Before.
It would be a big list. Not quite as bad as digging through the back pages to find the story links but still a long list.
Possibly volunteers could thin the lists down a bit before posting in a pre-nomination thread. Some of them with the oldest last-post-dates might just have reader replies and no story posts and could be taken off the list, but probably 2 people would have to check and an overseer edit the list just to make sure a story wasn't removed by mistake.
And it would require some, uh, programming. More than I know, though I suppose possible to figure out in a year.
7. Do you think that a discussion where users would not be limited to one post should take place after this survey?
a) Yes

5. Why did you give that answer?
Things were fairly good this time around, there weren't any problems, however, I think in general that the process itself could still use some revision.
6. What is ONE thing you would change for next year's awards?
I really like Jade's idea of automated system for awards. Lazy's link machine was incredibly helpful in tracking down various stories and such and while it would take more work for the current mods, it'd be worth it in the end.
7. Do you think that a discussion where users would not be limited to one post should take place after this survey?
a) Yes - especially regarding the OC question, as I think there is a lot more than can be said from a Yes/No answer, but I think a time limit on it would be useful to, so as to not drag things out too much.

This is my first fanfic awards
, loved it. Great stuff, little room for improvement.
6. What is ONE thing you would change for next year's awards?
The only little disturbance in the Force to me are the epic story's started in 1968
that seem to get nominated everytime through, even with as few as only one update in the past year. I worry they are getting simply nominated on past performance. Outside of exceptions like Vignettes'n'such of course. Maybe a certain number of yearly updates could be required. I'd like to hear what others think though because someone might have idea's about the subject I haven't thought of.

1. Should OCs be eligible to win a category multiple times in different stories?
No. (Assuming that the award is awarded to the writing of the character, not the actual story.)
2. Should a minimum character count be required for a story to be eligible for Best Ensemble?
Yes.
3. If you answered yes on question 2, what do you think the minimum number of characters should be?
4+
4. Overall, how would you rate these awards on a scale of 1 to 10 (with 1 being poor, 5 being good, and 10 being excellent)?
I'd give it an 8.
5. Why did you give that answer?
Because the team once again did a great job, and the awards were just and fair.
6. What is ONE thing you would change for next year's awards?
An award called... "Best Cliffhanger."
7. Do you think that a discussion where users would not be limited to one post should take place after this survey?
Yes.

5. Why did you give that answer?
There's always room for improvement. Well, Saga started out pretty rocky, which is one of my only complaints. Maybe next year, a contingency plan could be created that if something happens where hosts aren't around for whatever reason, the Overseer/Lt.Overseer steps in and starts the process. Just a suggestion since somethings things pop-up for whatever reason. Also, I have a question, I know that we can't include special mark-up code like smilies and color in the excerpt, but why is it okay to include smilies in Author's Notes?
Overall, the awards went very, very smoothly this year.
Thanks for your hard work!
6. What is ONE thing you would change for next year's awards?
I'd change the minimum number of nominations needed to 3 for all eras.
7. Do you think that a discussion where users would not be limited to one post should take place after this survey?
a) Yes (if needed)
