The Past
It wasn't often that Luke went to Mos Espa. Usually he could find everything he needed in Anchorhead. And although he would never admit it, he was more than a little intimidated by the spaceport's reputation - which, while not as bad as that of Mos Eisley, was still pretty shocking. Thus he was both disappointed and relieved when he found out that the used parts shop he was looking for could be found on Mos Espa's outskirts.
"Hello?" he said as he poked his head in through the door. He could hear the echoes of a heated argument going on in a back room, but other than that the shop seemed empty. "Is anyone here?"
He was about to follow the arguing voices when a blue, winged creature with a bloated body popped up from behind the counter. "What do you want?" the alien said.
"I'm looking for inertial sequencers," Luke said.
"What?" the alien said, cupping a hand to where, presumably, his auditory organs were.
"
Inertial sequencers
," Luke repeated in a loud, slow voice.
"Sequencers, eh? What class?"
"D-7. I was told if you didn't have them, no-one on Tatooine would."
"Ha!" the alien cried, apparently pleased by the compliment. "That's right, boy. Watto has everything," he said, tapping his chest with his thumb.
"Watto? That's not what it says on the sign outside."
Either Watto didn't hear Luke's words or he pretended not to. "Watto has everything," he said again. "Hyperdrives, droids, podracers -
everything.
" A faraway look entered his eyes, one Luke had learned was the same with creatures everywhere in the galaxy. It meant that those eyes were looking at something that no longer existed, with the promise of a boring tale to follow.
"So, do you have them or not?" Luke asked, hoping to short-circuit the alien's trip down Memory Lane. It didn't work.
"Podraces," Watto said, half to Luke and half to himself. "I used to win them, you know. All the time."
"You were a podracer?" Luke asked, interested despite himself. Although they had gone out of style, podracing used to be very popular on Tatooine. And though Luke's taste ran toward swoops and skyhoppers, he sometimes wished that the podraces were still held annually so that he could prove his skills as a pilot.
Not that Uncle Owen would ever let him, of course.
"A racer? No, not me." Watto snorted, then gave a flick of his wrist and watched intently as an unseen
something
rolled out of his hand and came to a stop somewhere on the floor. "Bets and wagers, now -
that's
my game. Won every one of them. Made a killing, I did. That's how I got . . ."
His words trailed off as his eyes saw Luke for what might have been the first time. His lips parted soundlessly, showing uneven rows of yellowing teeth. Luke tried not to flinch as Watto reached out and touched Luke's hair. ". . . Ani?"
"You must be thinking of someone else. I'm -"
"Ani!" Watto cried happily. "It
is
you! Little Anakin Skywalker, all grown up. How've you been?"
"I'm not!" Luke said. Then his short-term memory dropped Watto's words in his brain, tagging it for his attention with a flashing red flag. "Wait a minute. Did you just say Anakin
Skywalker?
"
Watto frowned in irritation. "That's your name, isn't it? Don't play games with me, boy. You might be Jedi, but you'll treat your old master with respect!" Then his frown became one of confusion as he saw the young man standing in front of him
now
, not decades ago. "You're not Ani?"
"No. But - how did you know my father's name? Did you know him?"
"'Course I knew him. I
owned
him. Flew for me, Ani did."
"For you? But my father wasn't a pilot. He was a navigator on a spice freighter!"
The look Watto gave him was the universal
kids these days, they think they know it all
look of old people everywhere. "Ani was a pilot," he said firmly. "A podracing pilot. The best! The only human to ever win the Boonta Eve."
Luke's knowledge of podracing was mostly second-hand stories, but it was still enough for him to know that humans didn't have a chance. And the bit about his father being a Jedi -
no
. It couldn't be. It contradicted everything his uncle and aunt had told him. This had to be just a senile alien with confused memories. "I don't believe you," Luke said.
A bony finger was jabbed in his chest. "Don't believe me, do you? Think I'm lying, do you? Well, I have proof!" Watto went through his pockets like a madman, stopping only when he found a battered data chip. "Here's your
proof!
" he shouted as he slapped it into Luke's hand. "View
that
and call me a liar!"
"Watto!" a stern female voice called out from behind. "You're here
again
?"
Luke turned around and saw a woman perhaps ten years older than he was. She wore a scowl that suggested this wasn't the first time something like this had happened, and that she was sick and tired of it. She strode over to Watto and grabbed him by the scruff of his neck like she would an errant child.
"How many times do I have to tell you, Watto -
this isn't your place any more!
Go on, get out! You're scaring away my customers."
Luke watched in astonishment as she threw Watto out the door. Then she turned to him and gave him a weak smile. "Sorry about that. He used to own this place before he lost it in a bet."
"Was it true, what he said?"
She gave him a look of polite bemusement. "About what? I only heard his shouting. I wouldn't worry too much about him or anything he says. He's a bit sun-fried."
Sun-fried,
Luke thought. He looked down at the data chip in his hand. It had the look of something from before the Clone Wars. Not to mention the grime it had collected in Watto's pockets.
The shopkeeper followed his glance. She said, "I had a look a that years ago. Watto said it was a podrace, but I couldn't tell. It's a copy of a copy of a copy, you know? Too much static to be interesting."
"Did Anakin Skywalker win it?"
She shrugged. "Maybe. Someone you know?"
Luke answered with a shrug of his own. "Maybe. Doubt it, though."
"Humph. Anyway, what can I do for you? I take it you're here for parts?"
"Um . . . oh, right. I need a D-7 inertial sequencer for my skyhopper."
"A D-7, you say? I
think
I might have something. Just give me a few minutes to check."
Luke watched her leave the room. Then his eyes went down to the discredited data chip he was still holding. If what the shopkeeper said was true, then there was no reason for him to keep it. He should find Watto and return it to him - or maybe just throw it in the recycler. The thought of seeing Watto again made him uncomfortable.
But if it wasn't . . .
Luke slipped the data chip into his pocket. He would view it when he got home.
Once.
And then he'd throw it away. There was no need to listen to the words of a deluded old fool, after all.

Oh, really cool! What an original idea! I don't think I've ever read of Luke running into Watto. And I
almost
feel sorry for Watto--"sun-fried" indeed.
And I like Luke here--who wouldn't be uncomfortable with Watto? What with him calling him, "Ani" and giving him that data-chip...wow.
What a great little viggy!

Oh wow, this was fantastic.
I didn't know what to expect, but this viggie was so wonderfully constructed, and I love the image of Watto as a senile old fool.
Ha! The perfect mixture of humour and suspense, drew me right in.
I only have one complaint. And that is- it ended too soon!
I was really excited to see Lukes reaction when he views the holo pad, and how this will impact this AU...
also I wonder what happens to Watto and whether Luke will try to seek him out...
AND I want to know who that woman is!!
Please please continue this.
PM me if you do. Thanks for the delightful read!

What an original idea! I don't think I've ever read of Luke running into Watto.
For some reason, whenever I get a plot bunny that makes me think, "Okay, this has probably been done before but I just
gotta
write it!" it turns out that it hasn't. Maybe my brain is just screwy.
And I almost feel sorry for Watto--"sun-fried" indeed. And I like Luke here--who wouldn't be uncomfortable with Watto? What with him calling him, "Ani" and giving him that data-chip...wow.
Watto was fun to write. It was even more fun to think of how he went from TPM to AotC to this fic. I imagine he was in denial after TPM, and around AotC he mellowed and scrounged around for a copy of that Boonta Eve Race. Maybe I'll write about that sometime.
Thanks for reading!

I didn't know what to expect, but this viggie was so wonderfully constructed, and I love the image of Watto as a senile old fool.
Watto's sun-fried status was dictated by the needs this fic. I couldn't think of any other way of making Luke and Watto meet (which is another way of saying "I've got a lousy imagination"). Also, I wanted to make it hard for Luke to believe what Watto was saying because . . .
I only have one complaint. And that is- it ended too soon!
I was really excited to see Lukes reaction when he views the holo pad, and how this will impact this AU... also I wonder what happens to Watto and whether Luke will try to seek him out... AND I want to know who that woman is!!
This started out as a longer fic. The original plot bunny was that Luke, after viewing the data chip (which turns out to be 75% static), would go to various old people (Owen, Obi-Wan, etc.) and ask about Anakin only to be told truths "from a certain point of view" that would make him think Watto was wrong.
So you see, the
actual
summary is: "What if Luke was told the truth about his father before ANH . . . and he didn't believe it?" The rabbit
wasn't
an AU. (Dear gods, how I love using clichés for misdirection.
)
The woman was just a placeholder character. Her only purpose was to tell Luke that Watto's memories can't be entirely trusted. However, your comments have given me an idea to continue this vig, in which she will play a larger role.
Please please continue this.
PM me if you do.
Will do on both counts. Thanks for reading!

This was going to be a one-post vig, but as mentioned above, I got bitten by a rabbit. I've only a vague idea where I want to take this story, which means that "always in motion is the future." Unfortunately, that includes when my next update will be.

EDIT:
Tweak, tweak, tweak.
Sharl braced herself for another round of arguments as she returned to the back room where her grandfather was waiting. It wasn't that she disliked him. On most issues the two of them got along just fine. But she wished he would wake up and realize she wasn't the small girl who eagerly awaited his visits when he would tell her stories and give her gifts.
Maybe,
she thought,
I shouldn't have accepted the last one.
As she'd told the young man a handful of minutes ago, this junk shop -
her
junk shop - was originally Watto's. But he'd gambled on the wrong podracer and it had been confiscated by the local bookmaker who had, many years later, given it to his granddaughter as a coming-of-age present.
Unfortunately, sometimes it seemed like Aeron Dakkas thought of the shop as just another toy for Sharl to play with.
"Who was that?" his gruff voice called out before she could see him.
"A
customer
, Gran'da. I still have them, you know."
"But not as many as you should," Aeron said. "Like it or not, this is a Hutt city. If you won't get your hands dirty, you don't have a chance against people who will."
Sharl gave him a cold glare. "This is
my
shop. If we ever lower ourselves to the Hutts' level, it will be because
I
decided to."
"And in the meantime, you're just going to shut your ears and watch your profits drop? Is that it?" He waved his arm in an all-encompassing gesture. "You'd throw all this away
just to prove a point?
If that's what you're trying to do, then consider it proven and stop throwing credits away. You can still buy back those business deals, you know."
"But I won't be able to buy back my soul, Aeron," Sharl said, only to receive a blank stare. Her grandfather, while a shrewd investor and business partner, had the tendency to think in terms of credits and the power they could buy. She was sure he was a man of principles, but they were buried beneath layers of ruthless pragmatism and expediency.
"It's not like I'm fighting the Hutts," she said. "I pay for their protection like everyone else. But -"
"But what, Sharl? How's that different from bribing suppliers for the best goods? In fact - since everyone else is doing it, isn't it the same as trying to be the highest bidder?"
She shook her head so hard it hurt. "No. It's not the same at all."
"Whatever you say, Granddaughter."
Sharl opened her mouth to argue some more, but the look in her grandfather's eyes said that as far as he was concerned, this discussion was finished. Although they were going to repeat it again in a day or so, for now he was going to put it on hold. She knew it was probably just as frustrating for him as it was for her, but still a petulant voice inside her cried
It's not fair!
at his having the last word.
"Watto was here," she said after a long, uncomfortable silence. "He was terrorizing the customers again with his data chip."
"Watto?" A smile came to Aeron's lips at the Toydarian's name. "He
still
has that chip with him?"
"Yes. Well, not any more - he gave the chip away, I think."
Aeron's eyebrows rose in amusement. "Oh? To who?"
Sharl pointed her thumb at the doorway. "The customer I was just dealing with. Luke something."
A strange look came across his face when she mentioned the name. In a voice too level to be natural, he said, "Skywalker?"
"I don't know. He didn't say and I didn't ask." Then a spark of recognition entered her eyes and she said, "Come to think of it, he
was
saying something about a Skywalker winning Watto's race."
"
Anakin
Skywalker?"
"You know him, Gran'da?"
"I . . . think so. Maybe."
"Really." Sharl crossed her arms against her chest and gave her grandfather a stern look. The last time he had sounded like this was when she found out about the deal with the Rodian he made without telling her. "Aeron, is this something I should know about?"
"No. It's - it's just some old business. Before your time."
"Hmm." Part of her wanted to ask what it was all about. Part of her didn't want to know. Yet another part wondered,
If I listened more to Watto's ramblings, maybe I would have a better idea what Aeron's trying to hide.
"Is this going to get in the way of
new
business?" she asked.
"No, of course not!" he said indignantly. "It's just old business. Nothing for you to worry about."

Given the proper circumstances, he will. But even if he does, I'm not sure if he'll tell Sharl. And she might not believe him when he does. If he

The trouble is, most of those rabbits are AU - and I want this to stick to canon unless it can't be avoided. Hopefully, the non-AU rabbits will be more seductive than the AU ones.
And to everyone who has read my story so far, I would like to say "thank you!"

Luke watched the grainy image on the datapad screen for the third time, wondering why he hadn't thrown the data chip away. The shopkeeper had been right about the quality. It was as if the race was being held in a sandstorm. If he squinted his eyes he could make out the podracers, but that was about it. At no point could he see what the pilots actually looked like. Also, somewhere along the line the audio had either been mangled horribly or translated into an alien language. Or maybe both. It made no difference since Luke couldn't understand a word of what was probably a running commentary.
Frustrated, he tossed the datapad to the foot of his bed. It bounced off a pile of socks and fell to the floor with a pathetic beep.
"This," he said to no-one in particular, "is just a huge waste of time. I could've recalibrated the inertial sequencers by now."
The only reason he hadn't was the conviction in the blue alien's words. Whether or not he was senile, Watto truly believed what he was saying, that Anakin Skywalker had been a podracer pilot. And while it went against everything his aunt and uncle had told him about his father, Luke wanted to believe it was true.
My father. A pilot.
Not a navigator but a pilot. And not just any pilot, but a
racing
pilot. An excellent one, if Watto's ramblings could be believed.
For a very brief moment, Luke considered asking his uncle if it was true. He discarded the idea quickly, though. Nothing made Uncle Owen angrier than mentioning Anakin Skywalker. It was even worse than his reaction to Luke's constant petition to apply for the Imperial Academy.
Going to Aunt Beru was likewise out of the question. For the past few months, she had been careful not to say anything about Luke's past or future, especially when Owen was around. It was probably the way he'd exploded when she mentioned the Academy the night before Biggs Darklighter left Tatooine.
Biggs,
Luke thought. He wondered what his friend was doing right now. The only word he'd had was a holocard sent a month after Biggs had entered the Academy. If the stories were true, he was probably up to his eyeballs studying to become an Imperial officer.
Luke wished Biggs was here to help him with this puzzle. Even if he didn't know how to solve it, he'd know someone who could. Or else his father would. He was an influential trader and had connections with virtually
everyone
.
It took his brain ten minutes to put two and two together. When it did, Luke nearly fell out of the bed in excitement.
Huff Darklighter! I bet
he'll
know a slicer who can clear up this data chip.
Luke found it hard to sleep that night. But when he finally did, he dreamed of racing his skyhopper in a static sandstorm.
