	Title: Raising Hope Author(s): rhonderoo Timeframe: Post-ROTS Characters: Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker, Leia Skywalker Genre: AU, Drama Summary: Anakin faces the same choice as in canon, only does not turn. Notes: I'm not real sure exactly how long this one is going to be, but it's a bunny that I've had since being spoiled rotten months ago, and it bit harder once I actually saw the movie. And my muse, which had been hiding for a bit, poked its head out this week. I'm not certain how often I'll get to update, but I'm going to try to keep it fairly updated and am publically asking Jedi Trace to pester me to death to keep it updated in a timely manner, as we work on the sequel to Anniversaries of the Heart together. I'm also going to ask Vadey and Jade to do the same thing. I figure with three people hassling me, I'll write more frequently. Raising Hope The human heart feels things the eyes cannot see, and knows what the mind cannot understand. - Robert Vallett Anakin Skywalker watched out the viewport of the apartment at 500 Republica, as his mind wandered listlessly. He focused on the luminous gold hue that came with a Coruscant sunset, and numbly concentrated on just the act of breathing. It was all he could summon the strength to do. He vaguely noticed he was clasping his left hand in his right so tight that it was beginning to hurt. “Are you going to stand there forever?” “Maybe.” Obi-Wan Kenobi walked quietly in the room, his face a sad mixture of grief and sympathy. Hands behind his back, he walked to stand near the bed that Anakin had shared with his wife. Anakin’s face bore the haggard expression of a man who had been up for days. He brought his hands out to look at them oddly, and Obi-Wan wondered if he might finally break down. It was so unlike Anakin to bear his grief silently, and it scared Obi-Wan. His Anakin had always raged at that which would tear him down. The Jedi master raised his hand to put it on Anakin’s shoulder then stopped, leaving his hand in mid-air undecidedly. Perhaps it was too soon. “The galaxy owes you a great boon, Anakin. You have saved us.” Obi-Wan’s measure was greeted with silence. He could tell Anakin worked to compose himself. “Then the galaxy will understand if I ask to be left alone.” “Anakin….” Finally Obi-Wan put his hand on Anakin’s shoulder, only to have Anakin shake it off and move farther down the front of the viewport. He watched as Anakin ran his flesh hand over his face and through his hair. “You cannot leave them at the medical ward forever, Anakin. It has been two weeks.” “Two weeks in which the Jedi have said nothing to me regarding my marriage and… Padmé’s pregnancy. Although, what does it matter now?” Anakin bit off harshly. “Anakin, listen to me…” “No! You listen to me! I have done this! I have fulfilled your precious prophecy! Palpatine is dead!” Anakin’s voice had risen steadily as the dam on his grief and anger broke. Obi-Wan could see it wash over him, drowning him. “Now leave me in peace,” Anakin said quietly. A tear rolled down his cheek and he turned again to the city scape. “I never want to see any of you again as long as I live,” he whispered. Each day, the weight of his heart got heavier as an ever-expanding part of him wanted to die…or worse. It was as if the grief of his mother’s death had come back to visit him ten-fold. He would sometimes go to sleep at night wishing that he would not wake in the morning. Or even more frightening, that he could succumb to the darkness that promised relief from this heartache. It would be so easy. “Anakin, I’m so sorry…,” Obi-Wan said quietly as he again laid a comforting hand on Anakin’s shoulder and squeezed. “For what? You have everything you wanted now. The Sith are gone…and my wife is dead.” With this, Anakin swiped the low sitting chair by the wall across the room, and raised both hands to cover his face. His breath was coming in uneven gasps and Obi-Wan could feel the darkness of Anakin’s anguish rise up to swirl around his friend. At this moment, Obi-Wan would have given his life to the Force to make Anakin whole again, but there was nothing he could do. He felt more helpless than he had ever felt, even past the feeling of emptiness that had overcome him at Qui-Gon’s death. “Anakin, they are your children,” Obi-Wan said softly. “You have not even seen them.” Anakin fell to his knees, his head in hands and his body wracked by sobs. It had been two weeks since their arrival from Polis Massa, where Padmé had been spirited away in his desperation to keep her and their children safe from Palapatine. He had listened to Master Yoda and it had cost him Padme’s life, he thought bitterly. While he fulfilled his destiny, his wife had delivered his children and died. The twins were rushed to Coruscant after the Chancellor’s death and in his grief and pain, he had stayed away. Too much the coward to even lay eyes upon them. He had killed their mother as surely as if he had choked the life out of her, just by refusing Palpatine’s offer of the knowledge of cheating death. He lowered his hands and looked at them as if seeing them for the first time. “I can’t,” he whispered. “I cannot look at them.” ~ To be continued ~ -----signature----- DT421

Anakin! Raise your kids! Here's a hug to start off. The harshest line was the one about the Jedi getting what they wanted - both Palpatine and Padme dead. 	While he fulfilled his destiny, his wife had delivered his children and died. That's just wrong. I mean, he did what he had to do, but STILL!!! Poor Padme. “For what? You have everything you wanted now. The Sith are gone…and my wife is dead.” That's just sick. It gives me creepy feelings. It's heartbreaking. I love this story. PM me when you update. 	Wonderful start! This is just heart-wrenching and is certainly an interesting twist. I can't wait to see what you've got in store for the next part, but believe me, I'll be here! 	That was depressing but I loved it. Everyone seems to be suffering in this fic. Anakin did the right thing and still his wife died. That's just not fair! 	Rhonda, you are breaking my heart! This was so touching and typical of Anakin as well. He's just not going to deal with the two very big reminders of his wife's death. If you do PM's, I want one. 	Wow. I'd like PM's when you update please! 	Wow, that was very powerful; also it is interesting to see an AU light side Anakin who is not happy... I mean it's like either way, dark or light, he loses.
