Category: oddness
Characters: Asajj Ventress, Obi-Wan Kenobi
Timeframe: Intersaga, ~13 BBY
Rating: PG
Summary: Few have escaped the Empire's wrath. Refuges are few and far between, and nobody can be trusted. But on barren Tatooine, a long-simmering mutual obsession is awakened, and finally plays itself out over one wild month. Asajj/Kenobi.
Notes: Constructive criticism is always welcome. Thanks are due to a certain Ewok for running commentary and a degree of inspiration in the final stretches, and to my regular fic-peerers-at, who know who they are.

There was something to be said for a good disguise.

She was dressed like a spacer. There was about a centimeter of steel gray hair on her head, newly grown, itching and highlighted in unnatural black. Her eyes were brown, one from a cheap treatment that would only last a year or so, the other from its artificial iris being swapped out.

"Can I get you anything else, Miss Maru?" the bartender of this rathole of a Outer Rim cantina asked. She gave him a tight smile, and looked around.

She'd been one of the most recognizable women in the galaxy not seven years before. Now, nobody gave her a second glance. She glanced around the bar, at an assortment of aliens who probably couldn't tell her from the bartender without a nametag. There were a few humans too. One at the bar gave her a passing glance and then went back to nursing his drink. She gave him one in return, and narrowed her eyes as she saw the weathered features under the hood.

Well, kark. Speaking of disguises, piss-poor, that was Obi-Wan Kenobi. She could even sense him now that she was looking, a controlled near-silent hum in the Force. She turned back to her drink, resisting the urge to sneak him glances.

There had to be something she could do with that information.

Sell him out to the Empire? Her mind shied away from that. It had only been four months before that she'd lured Lord Vader into an ambush that had been critically insufficient to the task, and barely escaped with her life and his starfighter.

All in all, it had probably only served to whet his anger and remind him she was still out here. She shivered. She'd been scared enough to get herself well and fully face-altered when she'd been getting her mangled leg fixed up.

If this kept up she'd be as mechanical as he was. A bald Rattatakian woman of her height attracted attention. As an aging human woman, she was far less noticeable. She found herself almost relaxing in the relative anonymity.

Don't get cocky, Asajj, she thought to herself.

She was still thinking about trying to start up a conversation (what would she say), when he rose up and left. There was a slightly drunken stagger to his walk as he wrapped his cloak fully around himself and disappeared into the night

She stared a little blankly at the door. He wasn't supposed to leave! Frustrated, she asked the bartender, "Does he come here often?"

The bartender shrugged, pouring her another Corellian brandy. "Nah. He comes in with a Jawa caravan sometimes. Suppose he's in town to get supplies before storm season."

"You know where he lives?"

The bartender eyed her. "We don't ask those kinds of questions around here," he said shortly.

Asajj nodded absently. Jawas? Hm.

***

Several mind-tricks, a malfunctioning protocol droid, and far too much time talking to Jawas later, Asajj had coordinates and a schedule for the caravan. She laughed quietly to herself when she saw which day they were dropping him off, and started making plans.

Five days later she landed her Headhunter up the cavern from where she'd located his house, and slipped inside, careful to leave no footprints. Leaning against one wall, she sank into Quey'tek meditation, becoming as small as possible in the Force, invisible as possible against the wall.

She could sense him coming. She always had been able to find him, and it was easy to locate his bright, muted spark as he tied his heavily laden bantha up and began to unload. His cloak was still up as he brought supplies inside, and he didn't see her. Of course, he wouldn't be expecting to see anyone. He felt tired, and relieved to be home. As he headed back out to the bantha, she soundlessly slipped behind him.

"Happy Life Day," she breathed into his ear. "And I do mean happy Life Day."

Kenobi's reaction was as gratifying as she'd expected. Taken by complete surprise, he whirled around. She grinned as he stared at her in complete confusion, nearly going for his lightsaber. About six seconds in his eyes narrowed.

"Asajj" he sputtered.

"Interesting place you've got here, Kenobi."

He was still staring at her. "You have hair," he said.

"I was in the neighborhood and thought I'd stop by..."

"Just how..." he stopped. Smiled wryly. "Qui-Gon put you up to this, didn't he."

Asajj made a non-committal noise.

"I'm actually..." he shook his head. "very glad to see you alive. And apparently saner. And, um..."

She smiled at him.

"Alive, yes, sane, maybe." she said.

"I regret I don't have much in the way of accommodations here for guests," he said politely. "I do have one thing to offer, and that is my hospitality. Stay as long as you wish." He looked like he was burning with questions to ask her.

"Well," her eyes gleamed, "dinner first, then talk."

***

It was much later.

"This," she said, raising her glass, "is not bad stuff, if a little weak. But I never saw you as a man for drink"

He chuckled. "All the water in Mos Eisley that hasn't already gone through the Bunkard system is worth its weight in reactor fuel, retail. My finances are not unlimited."

"Oh. And here I was thinking you'd just sunk into alcoholism and despair."

"Base slander," Kenobi said, giving her a small wicked smile. "Another drink?"

She blinked. "Are you trying to take advantage of me, Master Kenobi?"

His expression was unreadable. "I wouldn't do that."

***

"I suppose it's been nice to see you," Asajj said, cheerfully sloshed. "Have fun. Don't get killed." She squinted, trying to find her cloak.

She heard footsteps behind her, and hands on her shoulders. Obi-Wan wrapped the desert covering around her, a guard against the cold night even in his barely-heated home. "I don't think it would be wise for you to travel in this state,"

His touch lingered a little longer than necessary. Amused, she turned around to chide him.

Their eyes met. On a sudden urge, she leaned down and kissed him.

It was a long kiss, and he made no move to break it. When she did, his voice was uneasy. "Ventress..."

"Don't call me that, you sound like Dooku..."

"Asajj, you're drunk..."

Her eyes narrowed. "I'm only as drunk as I want to be."

She pounced.

***

When she woke up, the first thing she noticed was the general aura of Kenobi. He wasn't in the bed - he had arranged her in it as best he could. But the entire room smelled of him. Well, them. But mostly him. It was the smell she associated with him, intrinsically his. It wasn't what he'd have smelled like as a fastidious Jedi, but a decade in the desert had apparently been as injurious to his general hygiene as a couple of months under her tender mercies on Rattatak. It wasn't a bad smell, per se - very sweaty, masculine. It turned her on a great deal, but she wasn't going to tell him that.

She moved, winced a little, and wondered how she had gotten sand there. She itched, and needed a shower badly. She didn't think there was one. Not the best of awakenings, but not the worst either.

But, and she grinned lazily, it had been a very good night. On the run from the Empire, where every liason might be a betrayal, and being..."creative" in bed was a death sentence...she hadn't had any opportunities. She'd unloaded at least half a decade of sexual frustration and probably more on him, and he'd reciprocated. At first he'd been fairly reserved, and possibly a little intimidated, but he'd soon gotten over it.

He'd wanted her this time. Very badly. He just needed to admit it to himself. And that had given Asajj a soft, pleased buzz that still hadn't entirely gone away.

She dressed slowly, wrapping herself in her loose vaguely-local garb. She grinned as she recalled Kenobi's soft admission last night that he missed the leather. But that was another life, and they were different people now.

Maybe they were more real.

Kenobi was leaning in the doorframe. He didn't look drunk at all, but was watching her dress with a slow, almost possessive consideration. Their eyes met with a spark that sent a shiver down her spine, and she jerked her gaze away, wrapping her cloak around herself. I don't need complications.

"If you offer to walk me back I will hit you," she said with a grin.

She heard the unmistakable 'snap-hiss' of a lightsaber, and looked up to see three feet of pale blue glowing death across the door.

"Who said you were leaving?" he asked mildly.

She snarled and reached for her own saber. It was missing.

***

"So what do you think you're accomplishing here, Kenobi?" Asajj snapped. He had been the soul of courtesy, completely attentive to her every need. He'd let her have his bed, sleeping on the floor. She'd often thought about trying to strangle him, but she didn't think that would accomplish anything and she still hadn't discovered where he'd hidden her lightsaber. Or, perhaps more importantly, her new Headhunter. He'd stolen her codekey and concealed the ship somewhere. General Kenobi was a man of many talents, and one of those talents was apparently pickpocketing.

Killing him would be...wasteful. She'd give him another few days to come to reason.

"I'm starved for conversation and enjoy your company."

She was unimpressed. "I'm sure you could find a local woman. Buy one, even."

He looked offended.

"Is this some sort of sick revenge for what I did to you?"

His face hardened. "Jedi don't take revenge. You're just a very large security risk."

"Security for what?" she exploded at him. "The Empire takes over your hovel. So what?"

"I happen to like my hovel, thank you."

Asajj bared her teeth. "What are you hiding here?"

Kenobi gave her a sad smile. "The cowardice of an old man?"

"You're not that old. And I don't believe that for an instant." She pointed a long, accusing finger at him. "You, General Kenobi, are up to something."

***

The first sandstorm blew in over the dunes two days later. Kenobi brought her out to watch.

"Not something you want to be in on foot. It'll be like this all season. Maybe a week's respite at a time." He shrugged. "That's not enough to get you to Mos Eisley."

"So where's my ship, Kenobi?"

He smiled. "Safely under cover. You're lucky I hid it better before the Jawas found it."

She scowled.

"The Galaxy isn't safe right now. Wait a season or two. That's all I'm asking."

He touched her shoulder, and she jerked away.

***

Their relationship became no less tense, but it was no longer under threat of blades that he kept her there. She often went out to watch the storms. There were Tuskens in the valleys, and Kenobi told her to call him if they became troublesome. There was a certain rare peace to their existence - no Empire here, just the two of them. Even the fear of Vader that had haunted her steps seemed muted - after all, the two of them together might be more than he could handle.

They didn't touch each other. Sometimes they spoke, about the past. Neither of them wished to talk about the present, the cold reality of Imperial domination that had driven both of them here.

Obi-Wan offered to teach her. She sighed, and turned him down.

Seven days later something changed. She knew it as soon as she awoke, after strange and disturbing dreams. Obi-Wan was sitting at the table. His face was cast in shadow, and the expression on it was a mixture of bleak sadness and quiet relief.

There were two lightsabers on the table, and the codekey to her Headhunter.

"I....apologize for keeping you here." He met her eyes, then looked down. "And I'm sorry."

"Sorry for what?" she said impatiently. There were a lot of things she thought he owed her an apology for. "Stealing my ship again?"

"You miscarried last night," he said softly.

She stared at him blankly. "I....no."

He looked up, startled. "...I thought you knew,"

She hadn't sensed anything. But then, she hadn't been looking. Apparently, he had. "No, ah. I wasn't worried about that. I didn't think..." There was a numb feeling of confusion as she lowered her gaze.

He gave her a level stare. "You're apparently human enough. And not that much older than Anakin. And "

"Yeah," Asajj muttered. "Add about fifteen years." She really had thought she was too old.

"Fifteen?"

"Plus or minus."

"I didn't get that impression from Rattatak."

She shrugged uncomfortably. "Different world, different years, different life."

"You do look older," he admitted. "But then, you've changed your face around."

"Oh," she said. "So you just think I act immature."

"No...at least not now"

"Or did you get off on thinking me young enough to be your apprentice?"

"Um..."

"Aha."

"That's not...I didn't mean." He sighed. "You never acted like you were my age."

"I was running a planet, Kenobi."

He frowned. "You know what I mean. I always got the impression of wild, rather untamable youth with you. Like with Anakin."

"He's different now," Asajj said.

Kenobi sighed. "I don't doubt it. I suppose I knew in my heart I was making a large mistake with him," he said. "So I tried to make it up, with you."

"I never really saw the logic behind your little...obsession. It certainly confused Dooku to no end."

"Maybe I just like you. And hate what Dooku did to you."

"It wasn't Dooku - well, it was Dooku. But it wasn't all Dooku, or even mostly Dooku." She tilted her head. "And don't they kick you out of the Order for that sort of thing?"

"That sort of thing?" Kenobi raised both eyebrows. "I rather am the Jedi Order. I suppose I could kick myself out, but I'm not sure what that would accomplish."

She looked down at the table and picked up her lightsaber, the one Vader hadn't destroyed. She ignited it, red in the dark, weighing the balance again.

"After all," Kenobi murmured, "the galaxy needs Jedi. Now, more than ever before."

He called the other hilt on the table to his hand, and offered it solemnly to her.

Her eyes widened as she looked at it more closely. "I don't deserve that."

"You didn't when I stole it," Obi-Wan agreed. "But it is yours."

She took it with a quiet reverence, and lit the green blade. "I'm surprised you managed to keep it."

"I took it with me when w- I raided the Temple. Just in case." He smiled. "All debts paid?"

She quenched both blades. "If you can find it in yourself to forgive me, nothing I have done to you compares."

He nodded, accepting that, and hesitated. "I would still like you to stay."

"And do what?"

"Keep me company. I was serious about teaching you, if you want to learn."

"Ah," she said. "Now, I know there's a rule against Jedi sleeping with their apprentices...."

She thought Obi-Wan actually blushed at that.

"I wouldn't," he said woodenly.

"What if I want you to?"

There we go. That was definitely a blush. She grinned wickedly at him.

"Asajj, you're not being serious."

"I'm being completely serious." She glared at him. "What would you have done if...things had gone differently?" It was odd, to think of a child - but for her it was a past thing, something academic, that she'd never really known. But Obi-Wan had watched it...her? him? grow...and then stop.

He winced. "I...don't know. I don't think it's advisable for you to be my apprentice and my lover."

She smiled sweetly and took off her shirt. "Which one would you prefer?"

"Asajj, that's an unfair question," he muttered.

"You're still thinking of me as some replacement for Skywalker, aren't you? A receptacle for your vast wisdom. It never even occurred to you that there's things I could teach you, too."

"I'm not interested in what Dooku taught you," Obi-Wan said, still averting his eyes. "You're temptation enough as it is."

"Then why should I be interested in what Dooku taught your Master?"

Obi-Wan whipped his head around to glare at her. "That's not the same thing at all, and will you please put your shirt on?"

"Why?"

He frowned. "Because you're being immature and obviously need to learn more self-control."

"But that's the secret. I am in control." Asajj said. "You just want to control me so you can be in control of yourself. If you were truly a Jedi, my breasts wouldn't bother you."

"I think your logic is faulty."

"I think I'm right. This is all about control for you. You want me to stay in your hovel, and agree to admire your vast wisdom and knowledge of the Force. You want to control what I learn, and where I go, and how I dress. You spent too much time in the Order. You can't deal with people who don't fit in that system, or imagine an apprenticeship that's not silly braids and 'Yes, Master'. And that's the whisper of the Dark Side in your ear. You're letting your fear control you."

Obi-Wan's voice was rough and very strained. "You think there's nothing of the Dark Side in what I feel for you? I saw what attachment did to my apprentice - and what it did to me when I let it blind me to what he was becoming. And yes, it does scare me. It should scare you. You have no idea what you do to me."

She smiled. "Some idea." She bounced up on her toes, and his eyes slipped down before jerking up again.

"You're not playing fair here, Asajj," he hissed.

***

She did stay for a time, and one week passed into the next.

It wouldn't be a bad thing to disappear for a bit. She started to think about the stars again. She had resources, and cunning, and if it came down to playing that death's-dance again with Lord Vader, she might even be ready for that. There was something revitalizing about Tatooine, the way all the very real concerns of a woman on the run from the Empire just...didn't matter any more. She spent more time outside, and her skin started to lose some of its pallid hue. Only the Force protected her from a very nasty sunburn.

Tuskens came up to the valley once, when they were walking together along a ridge near Obi-Wan's home. Watching from the cliffside, Obi-Wan frowned and said they were a strange band. He made a haunting call, amplified with the Force, and the band retreated.

As they were walking back, though, another booming call echoed in the canyon. Obi-Wan looked startled, but scrambled agilely to the edge of the cliff, and looked down. Not looking back, he silently signaled Asajj.

It was one of Dooku's hand-signals. She'd seen Kenobi and Skywalker using them before, and never let on that she could read them. She wondered if Obi-Wan realized where they had come from, or just used them because his own Master had. She also wondered if he realized he was treating her like Anakin again.

As she reached his side, she saw there was something in the valley, rearing out where sand gave way to the rocky valley floor, pulling itself up with ten flexible legs. The creature was a serpentine monster with smooth red-dappled skin, easily stretching a hundred meters. Its tail trailed behind it as it roared again, horned head slowly craning up to look around.

"I heard two fighting once, from a distance. When I was out in the Dune Sea with...well, that doesn't matter. I've seen the lesser dragons the Tuskens hunt, and there's bones in the desert, but..." he shook his head. "I wanted you to see."

She grinned. "It's nice to see one from a good distance. I had to fight one of those once..."

Kenobi looked at her, both eyebrows quirked skeptically. "Really?"

"Oh yes. Dooku had one for training purposes. Also a male. Not quite that size though." She watched it quietly, reaching out with her senses.

Curious, she touched the dragon's mind, as she had been trained to do. Ah....

"Handsome beast, in any case." she said. And then she smiled. "You got him all worked up and now he's confused."

Obi-Wan frowned at her.

"I'm fairly sure that was a mating call you heard out there in the desert," she added.

"...oh."

She laughed at him.

***

And then, one evening, nearly a month after she'd arrived, she took him by the hand and led him down to the bed again.

They both knew this was goodbye, and it was a long one, without words, just two lonely souls about to part once more.

She was curled up against his body as she awoke, silently unentangling herself, willing him to sleep further, listening to his even breathing.

Asajj Ventress slipped on her clothes and back into the safety of the identity on her forged Imperial ID card.

This time, she left before the dawn.

**

"Anything to drink?" the young bartender asked her.

"Just water," she answered. She got a cool stare and a large price quoted. She paid it cheerfully, and watched the crowd. Belligerent tonight, and loud.

She got up to go to the bathroom and found a barfight in her way, a Trandoshan smacking a large and seemingly very stupid Bothan around.

"Stop that!" she said, irritated. They looked at her. "If you can't hold your liquor, go home."

"And what've you been drinking, lady?" the Bothan sneered.

"If you want to lose, lose outside," she smirked at him, reaching out with the Force. She didn't have the patience for this.

The Trandoshan hissed, gave the Bothan a predatory glance. "We can finish this elsewhere. If you have the courage."

She shook her head and kept walking.

They had cleared out when she returned. After she came back to the bar, the bartender smiled at her. "Thanks for that, ma'am."

"No problem."

"If you ever want a job here, just ask. The nights are trouble and we're always understaffed. Nobody wants to deal with them."

She laughed. "Well, maybe someday, I'm still trying my luck. This seems to be a place to go when all that's run out."

The bartender shrugged, looking disappointed. "Maybe so. Still, Miss Maru, have a drink on the house, in any case."

"Heh, set it against old Ben's tab, I'm flying out tonight." She hesitated, winked at him. "But with all luck, I'll be back."

That was...extremely good. I know I'm not alone in thinking that there was a deliciously sexual element in their 'long-simmering mutual obsession', but this has got to be the best vignette I have read on that issue.

Interesting that Obi-Wan referred to her by her first name when she pounced him. Gotta be surreal, eh? Asajj Ventress and Obi-Wan Kenobi parked in the middle-of-nowhere Jundland Wastes, getting 'cheerfully sloshed'. grin

She reminds me a great deal of the Bride in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill, and I enjoyed seeing that same almost fairytale-ih quality in this encounter. Obi-Wan and Asajj are structured dualities in so many ways, just as Anakin and Padme are, only different, of course. Good to see that your beautifully spare prose paid tribute to that. I do admire that your writing has such a unique voice.

Asajj, General Kenobi is indeed, as you astutely observed, a man of many talents, but I don't think he's got enough in the way of financial resources to indulge in that sort of commodity right now.

There were a lot of things she thought he owed her an apology for Well now, look who's talking!

And you know, General Kenobi may be a man of many talents, but I think her assets could beat his any day. wink

I think it's sad about the kid. Very telling that although Asajj seems to have mellowed somewhat, she felt almost nothing at the miscarriage, while Obi-Wan obviously mourned the life that could have been, even if it was only seven days old [It took me two re-readings to get the 'something' that had 'changed'. I am a slow learner.]

The characterisation was spot-on, and I think you did an excellent job here.

They're two hunted, very desperately alone people, able to have an actual conversation about their lives without looking over their shoulders for the first time in years. Of course it's going to be surreal! (of course, Obi-Wan is by no means telling her everything, as you may notice)

Asajj doesn't want complications or entanglements. She's afraid of being trapped. A child would be a huge complication. Part of it is that she only realized it after the fact, and there's nothing she could do about it - the child was more "real" to Obi-Wan than her. She's sort of trying not to think about it.

I liked your Asajj. Quite a sassy character. Is there a prequel to this vignette?

It was interesting that Obi-Wan would have a fling with someone his polar opposite let alone get her pregnant!

I also liked how Obi-Wan was stuck doing the same old things like treating her like Anakin. I related that to the way my grandfather would deal with us grandchildren as if we all had the same personalities and same likes and dislikes. It was both sad and amusing at the same time.

Well written! I enjoyed this and was strangely attracted to the couple - still a little weird though. I think I have to have a heart to heart with Obi and see where he was with this one!

Great Job!

This is exceptional stuff! One of the best fics I've ever read here on tfn. applause I adore Ventress and you have done her justice in this fic; fantastic! I love the way you mention Anakin in this too because I always thought Obi-Wan saw a lot of Anakin in Asajj's behaviour and actions, where Anakin might have gone (even back during the clone wars era). Of course things for him are so much worse than Asajj and he's far gone for a long time to come, but I always thought Obi-Wan's obsession with Asajj had a lot to do with that being in the back of his mind.

This is a very sophisticated, adult story you've written and posted here. So glad to see a great Ventress fic here. Well done! rose

Oh, that was a nice read, even though I am so, so, soooooo far behind on what the Clone Wars characters are supposed to have been doing outside of the cartoons. Two desperate characters finding each other in the desert...with good lines....very well done.

Wow - that was an amazing portrayl of a different side to Asajj Ventress.

Interesting to see a mutual intrest between her and Obi-Wan and I loved the way he got her to stay longer.

Great job on this

Great Job!

Well, they're both very lonely people who can't trust anyone. They're also fairly frusterated, and slightly drunk, but really, it wouldn't take much. Are you familiar with the Republic Comics' portrayal of Kenobi's obsession with her? It really is rather alarming, and I can easily see this playing out this way if they found themselves on the same side. The pregnancy was not anticipated by either party for different reasons.

It's a little desperate fling, and none of them really have any future under the Empire.

THanks to, Kynstar, ardavenport, KELIA, Dark_Disciple, and kenobifan for reading!

I might stick another scene in there if I get sufficiently inspired. The last parts before she leaves seems like they might need something extra. I'll think about it.

What a fascinating fic, sabarte. seriously. At first I was taken in by cool easy going narrative style, but once assaj spoke, I found her to be quite a firecracker. Having read Obssession, I remember her to be a nast character. This Assaj had returned to the light.

I was also surprised by the sexuality in the fic, but found it, ultimately important to the story. It was also well presented.

I also liked Assaj's upfront attitude toward Obi-Wan. Her talk on his control issues was very well said. But I imagine it is hard for monks, prisoners, or Jedi to be force into a new way of life. I agree that the two could learn a lot from each other.

Edit: clear as mud, huh?

applause It took me a long time to get round to reading this )real life and distractions) but I'm glad it did. It made me appreciate the reading even more, if you understand what I mean, like finding a diamond in your house.

Your characterizations of Obi-Wan and Asajj are really in keeping with their personalities and the recent events that must have shaped them. The idea of a child is compelling, and the romantic in me would love to think she may have conceived again during that last hurrah.

Upset about the casting for the Last Airbender movies?
Write to Paramount about it.

Upping this because more people need to read such *perfect* little gems of stories; and also because I was such an awful n00b when I last saw this. Not that I'm not now.

sabarte, every time I read one of your lustrous vignettes, I am blown away be the crisp concise-ness and clarity of your style. There does not seem to be a single extraneous word. Forgive me when I say that as a writer, I do not believe there is anyone whose work I have read whose style is as eminently suited to this form, the 4000-word vignette, as your is.

So I sat here trying to pick out a line or two that really rang true, and I discovered to my chagrin that I would have to QFT the whole thing. happy

Additionally-- *squints* Is it just me, or has the formatting with the double quotation marks gone all wonky?

Thanks to brodiew, leia_naberrie, and Cael_Fenton(again) for reviewing. I've fixed the formatting issues (I hope) - thanks for the heads-up!

I really like the characterizations here, the competence and screwups and connections to past history. Kenobi is sneaky and perfectly capable of being underhanded, and he gets away with it more when people are assuming he's as noble, open, and upstanding as he might like to be in an ideal situation. I also particularly liked the bit where he's hand-signaling to her without thinking about whether she'll understand, and the reason she does is that the signals got passed down from Dooku.
