Title:
The Imperial Express
Author: AnakinsFavorite
Characters:
Five year old Luke and Leia, Bail and Breha, Beru, Vader, assortment of Imperials.
Era:
Post-Rots, AU
Summary:
A take on the familiar Christmas story,
The Polar Express
, this tale tells of the separated twin’s adventure to discover the true meaning of Fete… and their search for their family.
Disclaimer:
I do not own
Star Wars
(it belongs to George Lucas),
The Polar Express
(it belongs to Chris VanAllsburg), or Josh Groban’s “Believe.” I merely happen to be in love with all four works.
Author Notes:
Once every year, my dad would pull out his copy of
The Polar Express
. It was a treat, and I would eagerly go sit next to him, all the while wearing the bell necklace that had come with the book. For me, the book had special meaning- a little boy, young and innocent like me, had embarked on a journey to find the true meaning of Christmas.
My father stopped reading the book to me when he moved away, but it is a tradition I hope to share with my own children… and with you my readers. So, go fix yourself a cup of hot chocolate and sit down to read the story about two children, separated at birth, who found each other while on a magical journey…
A very Merry Christmas to all who still believe…
Children, sleeping.
Snow is softly falling.
Dreams are calling,
Like bells in the distance.
Listening For a Sound
For all children throughout the Galaxy, Winter Fete was a magical time of the year. To some, it meant presents; others saw it as a time when friends and family from near and far would gather to celebrate; yet more children loved the warm feelings it created.
On the snowy planet of Alderaan, Leia, the only child of Bail and Breha Organa, was brimming with excitement. The palace was glowing with decorations, tempting presents had been displayed, and her favorite winter treats were being made. Yet, this was not what had her excited- exactly once a year, her father would sit down before the great fireplace in his den to tell her a special story, one that had been told every Fete Eve since she could remember.
Every year, it was the same story, but Leia loved it just the same. It consistently grew longer with each passing year, but Bail told it with such pleasure that it was just about as warming as the hearth at her side.
As was the custom, the little girl found her father in his study and promptly sat herself at his feet.
Working on a draft for a speech to the Senate, the man noticed his daughter- a small smile lurked at the corner of his lips- but he waited until she was fidgeting to look at her. “Little One, is it not past your bedtime?” he asked, knowing very well why she was there. “You have been leaving your mother so wearied these days.”
Still following the custom, Leia began to fidget with the hem of her father’s senatorial robes, carefully waiting to hint at what she was wanting. “Are you busy, Poppa?”
The innocence in her voice moved the old man, and he instantly forgot about his façade and pulled her onto his lap. “Where shall I start, Little One?”
“At the beginning,” she giggled, seemingly incapable of thinking about beginning anywhere else. “With the little girl…”
“Very much like my own,” Bail said softly, nuzzling his forehead against hers. “Yes, I remember. Once upon a time, on a planet far away, there was a little girl named-”
“Leia!” the little girl couldn’t help but squeal, eagerly clapping her hands together. “The little girl’s name was Leia- just like me!”
Bail smiled, patient as always. “And she was the most beautiful little girl in the entire Galaxy. On one Winter’s Fete, she overheard the most horrible thing- that there was no Father Fete.” His voice, normally strong and firm, turned gentle as he wove the tale. “Little Leia did not want to believe it but, as she laid in bed that night, she couldn’t help but wonder- was there really not a Father Fete?”
“But there really was,” Leia insisted, making sure that her point was understood.
“Ah, but that is later on in the story, Little One.” Gently, he shifted her to his right knee and wrapped his arms about her. “Then, as she laid there sleeping, the most wonderful, unbelievable thing happened- there, right outside the front door, was the Imperial Express.”
At this, the little girl sighed happily, obviously wishing that she had as good of fortune as the make-believe child in the story. She snuggled up against Bail, loving the scent that she knew was his.
For nigh an hour the story continued. As always, Breha silently slipped into the room and leaned against the door’s frame, a small smile upon her pretty face as she watched her husband practice his gentle magic on the little girl who had innocently captured both of their’s hearts.
Outside, a new snow began to fall, somehow making the story seem to be at the tips of their fingers.
“And in the end, she was the only one who believed,” Bail whispered, resting his head against that of the sleeping child’s. “Just… believe.”
Finally moving from her position, the Queen moved towards him and took her daughter into her arms.
Together, they took Leia up to her room and tucked her into the small bed. Not once did Leia stir, but she sighed happily, pleasantly dreaming.
“Sleep well, Leia,” Breha whispered, sitting down on the bed to stroke a curl out away from the little girl’s face. Her fingers lingered on the soft cheek, and she smiled up at her husband. “She looks so much like him… it is hard to believe that something so beautiful could have come from-”
“Hush,” Bail said gently, placing a hand upon his wife’s shoulder. “Anakin Skywalker is dead to us- he has been ever since he fell to the Dark Side.”
Breha nodded slowly, biting her lip before standing up and following Bail out of the door, pausing to look back as he did so. “When shall we tell her?”
Little Leia, who was not as asleep as they thought, could only wonder,
What is Momma and Poppa not telling me?
~*~*~*~*~
On a faraway planet named Tattoine, a little boy named Luke Skywalker was getting ready for bed. In his childish excitement, he was squirming about as his Aunt Beru helped him into his sleep clothes- he had seen the gift that waited for him in the family room.
“Good heavens, child,” his guardian laughed, tickling him before tucking the top over his head, “how are you ever going to fall asleep with you being so wild?”
Luke gave her a sheepish grin. Though their family didn’t have that many extra credits to spend, the boy knew that the gift that waited for him had been lovingly made by his aunt, and for this he treasured it even more.
Finally, he was tucked into his small bed, and he tried to not wiggle too much. “Can you tell me a story?” he asked, propping himself up on one elbow to look at her.
Laughing in her melodic way, Beru sat down on the bed next to him. “Just a short one- you know how your uncle can be if he loses his sleep.” Despite her chiding, she brushed her hand along Luke’s cheek. “Shall I tell you the story of the Imperial Express?”
Eagerly, he nodded his head, all attention.
“One snowy night, a little boy lay awake in his bed,” she smiled, leaning down to rest beside him.
“What is snow?” Luke could not help but ask, popping a little thumb in his mouth.
“They are white flakes that fall down from the sky,” Beru whispered. “Now, hush…”
Soon, Luke Skywalker was fast asleep and dreaming of fluffy white snow and magical freighters, all the while not knowing that the greatest adventure of his life lay before him…

Thank you! I’m going to try so hard to live up to the book! It is my favorite children’s book, and I hope you find that I’ve done it justice. It’s cute and everything, but it is actually true that Luke just would not know what snow was!

Thank you! I’m glad that you’re enjoying this so far!

Thank you! I’ve always wanted to do a holiday piece but haven’t known what to do! I came across this book earlier this year and just had to do it! *Passes out hot Chocolate*

*Laughs* I’m a sucker for them too if you can’t tell! And I want to read it to Aiden, but I’ll have to catch him in sleepy mode or he’ll want to go crawl around instead!

We were dreamers not so long ago
But one by one we all had to grow up.
All Aboard!
The moment Leia saw the light filtering in beneath her door flicker out, she knew that her parents were in bed and that it would be safe to get out of her bed. Throwing back the covers, the little girl slid her feet into her slippers and began to quickly tread across the floor to a huge cabinet which stood on the other end of the room. When the floor creaked loudly, she paused in her step, turning her head this way and that to see if her progress was to be disturbed.
When one rushed in through her door, the five-year old made her way over to the cabinet. Lifting up her head, she looked up… and up further… until she saw the small jeweled box which was just out of her reach. How was she to get it without making a sound? She was a very precocious five-year-old, and far too mature to make stairs out of the drawers…
A solution presented itself, but she felt a little uneasy at the thought of doing it. Listening once again to make sure that no one was awake, she lifted her little hand, her palm facing the cabinet…
As her brown eyes flitted shut, the little box up on the high shelf trembled for a moment and then glided off the shelf. Leia scrunched up her face, concentrating with all her might until she felt the reassuring weight of the prize in her hand. Delighted with herself, she sat down on the floor and opened it…
There was very little inside it, and to anyone else it would have seemed to be trivial items which were stored there. There were a few chipped holograms, one of them being cracked across the glass plate, and a few objects Leia did not understand the importance of. Placing the roughly carved necklace to the side, she pulled out the cracked hologram.
Anakin Skywalker… I know the name…
Slowly, as she gazed upon the holo, thoughts began to churn within the child’s head. Every time she looked at the beautiful woman who held on so tightly to the man portrayed there, a strange tingling feeling shot up her spine, causing her to shiver. Somehow, Leia knew the woman, even if it had only been in a dream.
It was the man in the holo, however, that caused her to start. Even in her childish ways, the princess thought him quite handsome, and she found herself staring at him for quite some time.
When she turned over the holo, and found something odd. Leia had looked at the picture many times before but, now that she had a name, the signatures etched into the metal surprised her.
Padmé Naberrie and Anakin Skywalker: Forever Bound In Love
It’s him! It’s my…
Suddenly, she swallowed, her heart thumping wildly. By the way her father spoke, this man was… was…
My father! But, how is this? Bail is my father! I can’t have two father’s!
the five-year old rationalized.
If that man is my real father, that would mean that she is my…
Mother.
Truly, she felt like crying, but Leia was prevented from doing so by the sound of footsteps outside her door. Hastily throwing everything back into the box, she ran over to her bed, not bothering to take off her slippers. She laid there still, pretending to be sleeping, all the while clutching the box under the pillow.
The door slid open, and she smelt the familiar scent that was Bail’s. Her stillness must have convinced him, for the door slid back shut.
At the moment she heard the metal tap back against the frame, she opened her bright brown eyes. With her initial shock being over, Leia returned to more troubling thoughts- where were her real parents and, if her parents had deceived her thus far, was there really any meaning behind the holiday which was supposed to invite familial love and togetherness? Was the whole spirit of Father Fete just a story to make little children behave?
Little Leia hadn’t been aware of the fact that she’d closed her eyes, but she was soon jolted out of her slumber. At first, she thought that it was just her imagination, but there was soon no ignoring the way her bed began to vibrate. By time she had sat up breathing heavily and rather startled, a hologram had managed to fall off of the cabinet and land on the floor with a loud thudding sound.
Force, the baddies are here!
Bolting out of her bed, the five-year old followed her initial inclination and ran to the window to see what was going on… but was met with fog.
Since she was already wearing her favorite slippers, Leia ran out of the room and to her parents, all the while forgetting that she was still clutching the small box. Because of the vibrations, she stumbled around in the dark, nearly losing her balance several times.
Within, her parents lay completely still in their beds, undisturbed and somehow not noticing the way the palace trembled.
Then, it stopped.
For a minute, Leia stood in the doorway, scarcely breathing. She could hear her small heart thumping wildly. Why had it stopped- and why did her parents not stir?
Yet, in her childish manner, she became very curious. Although Leia knew that she should wake her parents and follow their guidance, a tiny bit of her wanted to know what had caused her to all but fall out of her bed. With each passing moment, the urge to go find out grew stronger until she couldn’t resist.
Still holding onto the box, the five-year old quickly padded her way through the palace until she found herself at the main entrance. Surprisingly, there was no one in sight, and she was able to slip outside.
A heavy snow was falling, and Leia was instantly covered in snowflakes, but the little girl did not shiver. Clutching the box, she stepped away from the warmth and safety of the palace and onto the crunchy snow beneath her feet.
If the mist that had been in front of her window had been thick, it was nothing compared to what surrounded her now. Blindly, the little girl stumbled along.
Then, she realized that it wasn’t fog… but steam. Suddenly, it cleared to reveal a white ship bigger than any that she’d ever seen. It was a gleaming shade of white, and it towered above her so high that Leia had to lean her head backwards in order to see its top. Falling snow had landed upon it, the glittering substance making it seem almost magical.
Despite the fact that a huge and foreign ship had landed in the square in front of the palace, it seemed that only she saw it. No one had been stirred out of their bed to come look, and nary a single animal was seen scurrying about.
Just before the princess could fully marvel at this, the ship’s hatch made a clanking and then a hissing sound before lowering.
Peering at it, Leia saw that there was light within the ship, but who had arrived in it… and where were they?
As if to answer her question, a pair of boots emerged from the ship. They proved to be connected to a tall, sallow face man with a stiff look upon his face. In his hand was a datapad, and he was studying it as he slowly stepped down the ramp and onto the snow.
Stumbling forward, the little girl knew that she should turn around and go to her parents, but some unknown thing was preventing her from doing so. With a gasp, she looked into the man’s sleepy eyes.
“Well?” he asked in an impatient tone. “Aren’t you coming?”

When it seems the magic's slipped away
We find it all again on Christmas day.
This Is the Imperial Express!
Startled, Leia just stared at him. She took one glance at his uniform and immediately deduced that he was an Imperial. “I-I have to go,” the girl stammered, taking a step back away from him as if the man was going to do some harm to her.
“Aren’t you coming? Your name is on my list,” the stranger said. At this, he pulled a datapad out of his pockt and began flipping through it. "Here you go- Leia Skywalker, five Life Days old, daughter to Bail and Breha Organa."
Biting back the urge to say that those two persons really weren't her real parents, Leia was still quite curious and stood on her tippie-toes to see. Due to her young age, she was able to only recognize her name.
"You are Leia Organa, are you not?" he asked gruffly, looking at her with his sleepy eyes.
"That's my name," the child agreed, tapping the datapad with a chubby finger.
As if she'd somehow contaminated the glass plate, the man rubbed it with the cuff of his sleeve and stood back up to his full height.
Leia nervously bit her lip, shifting the box back and forth in her hands upon realizing that he was watching her. Shifting her eyes, the girl looked away from his penetrating gaze. “D-don’t hurt m-me. I ha-have diplomatic imm-mun-ity,” she stammered, remembering having heard her father say that before. At the moment, she didn’t feel much like a brave princess.
“I am not going to hurt you,” the man said, rather irritated. He continuously glanced at the chrono on his wrist. “Look at the time... we're going to be late at this rate.”
Flinching at the choice of words, Leia decided that talking to him was a bad idea, so she remained silent. Large fluffy snowflakes fell upon her face, tickling her skin. Still, the girl couldn’t help but be curious… “Where are you going?”
The man must have thought that the answer was obvious- he stood there staring at her for a few minute, completely incredulous. “But…” the man stammered. Suddenly, he raised up his hand and brushed away the snow which was already accumulating on the ship. After a few moments, lettering was revealed…
“I can’t read it,” Leia announced a little shamefacedly.
This caused the stranger to loose a little of his gruffness. “We are going to Coruscant- this is the Imperial Express!”
“Wow…” the child breathed, a tremor of excitement coursing through her little body. She forgot all about the snow, the fact that she had snuck out of the palace, and that the girl was talking to the stranger- this was the Imperial Express.
“So, are you going to come?” the man asked unceremoniously.
“What is your name?” Leia asked.
“My name is Adm- Piett. Piett is my name,” he replied, stammering a little over the words.
“Admpiett?”
“No, just Piett,” Piett responded, becoming increasingly impatient. Although the child wasn’t showing any signs of being cold, he stood there shifting from one foot to another as he shivered.
“That is an odd name.”
This snapped the last of his patience. “Either get on board… or stay behind.”
At this, Leia began to worry her lip and look alternately at the man and the ship with apparent uneasiness. She took a small step towards the Imperial Express… but then stopped. Her large eyes filled with tears as indecision began to pain her. “I can’t…” the child whispered.
“Very well,” Piett said, already moving back towards the ramp. “You’d best get inside where its warm- your parents will not be happy if they find you out here.”
A large tear rolled down her chubby cheek as the princess stood there desperately wanting to climb onboard… yet unable to disappoint her parents. The tiny box she clutched to her chest was hardly gave any comfort. The ship, the one her father had told her stories about ever since she’d been little, was there… all she had to do was agree to go.
He gave her one last look before heading up the ramp and disappearing out of sight.
Leia jumped as the ship’s engines suddenly warmed up to take off. The snow, which had been massing on top of the white hull, slid off and fell at her feet, making her little toes hurt with the cold.
The little princess began to weep as she dismally walked back towards the palace…
Then, without even realizing that she’d turned around, Leia found herself running through the snow towards the vibrating ship. The ramp was still down… all she had to do was get on it…
As if sensing her need to get aboard, the ship shuddered and then slowly began to lift.
Mere feet away, Leia cried out “Stop! Please! I want to come too!” Clutching at the box with one hand, she used the other to balance herself as she lunged for the ramp… which slowly lifted off the ground. Her heart began to race as she feared that it was too late. Jumping, the girl landed on the ramp… and slowly began to slide down it…
By then, the ship was a good few feet off the ground and was steadily rising up. When it was five feet higher, Leia slid to the edge… struggling to stay on. In a desperate attempt to stay on, she tucked the box beneath her chin, thus freeing both of her hands to climb back up. The going was hard, for the snow and ice had made the metal slick, and more than once her soft slippers lost their traction and caused her to fall down on the hard surface with a ‘thump.’
Still, she was not one to give up.
With a small and childish cry, the princess shoved herself up to a position where she could stand… and ran up the ramp and into the ship.
The moment she was standing inside, the ramp lifted up and shut with a loud sound.
Instantly, the smell of hot ‘decaf tingled her nose, and Leia soon smelled all of the pleasant aromas associated with Fete. Gone were her shivers- the young princess moved the precious box to her hand and turned the corner, nearly gasping aloud at what she saw…
“So, you decided to come along afterall…”

RE: The Imperial Express (Polar Express Crossover) All Aboard!
it'll be interesting to see how this plays out. As for the answer to your question - I actually saw the movie first, then I bought the book last year. Looking forward to more & meeting little five year old Luke.

RE: The Imperial Express (Polar Express Crossover) All Aboard!
Young Leia is just too precious!!! Love the contrast at first when she could almost tell the story to Bail LOL versus Luke--who of course would be unfamiliar with snow.
Leia's totally in character and I love her burgeoning Force skills. I hope she discovers that whoever her biological parents are, Bail and Breha are her true parents of the heart.
Bail was very lovable and loving BTW. Loved the author note in the beginning about enjoying this tale as a child
Could I have PMs please?

Aww. Go, Leia! Glad she decided to get aboard. Loved her running and jumping onto the Express, there.
