Title: Frozen Together
Author: dancing_star
Timeframe: ESB
Characters: Han, Luke,
Summary: That one night on Hoth
Disclaimer: Just stopping by for a visit to a galaxy far, far, away and borrowing some of George Lucas's characters wink
Notes: I got the title from a fabulous fic on ff.net by EsmeAmelia. grin

“If you don’t find him soon, he’s dead.”

Solo drove his mount across the icy field with an increasing sense of dread. Darkness was spreading over the frozen wasteland, bathing the terrain in an eerie, twilight blue. It was only a matter of time before night set in. With the night would come deadly, sub-zero temperatures, and without proper survival gear…

“When I find him soon, he’s safe.”

The Corellian spoke to no one in particular, his voice sounding strange in his own ears. It was hard to hear over the relentless wind, and trying to see through blowing snow neared impossible. How was he ever supposed to find the kid in this mess?

He would, he told himself. He just would. It wouldn’t be fair for Luke to die out here. Not after the kid had done so much for the Rebellion, been so unselfish. But since when was life fair?

Enough. The spacer put an end to his pondering. There was no time for mulling over irrational things. Right now he had one thing to concentrate on: finding Luke -and finding him alive. Han slowed his wheezing mount to a halt and sank down into the deep snow. It came up past his ankles. Adjusting a button on the heavy scanner, he squinted through the blizzard to the horizon. It wasn’t picking up any signals. He plodded forward, in desperate search to find the boy he’d come to love as a little brother.

He could only hope he was going the right way.

“Luke!”

The figure floundering in the snow could only be one person. He knew he’d find him! The kid was reaching a hand desperately towards him. Han spurred his mount forward, only to watch his young friend crumple into unconsciousness.

“Luke!” Solo dismounted frantically and stumbled through the snow. His expression was one of pure terror. He couldn’t have been too late!

Luke’s snow-covered form looked frozen solid, and his face was badly torn. “Don’t do this, Luke.” Han quickly knelt over him. “C’mon, give me a sign here.”

The kid was breathing- barely- but the faint breath on Han’s cheek was enough to fill him with a warm, happy relief. Now, if he could just get him back to base-

As Solo carefully lifted the unconscious youth, gently cradling him in his arms, he was all the while aware of an anguished, rasping noise behind him. He turned just in time to see his Tauntaun sway unsteadily and fall into the snow, taking a shuddering, last breath.

There went their ride. Anxiety threatened to overwhelm Solo, but he fought it back. Instead, determinedly, he focused his energy on getting the emergency shelter up.

Fast.

“Ben, wait… Don’t go… Dagobah.”

Darkness had fallen quickly over the barren wasteland, but Han, miraculously, had managed to get the shelter up in time. Outside the winds raged, frigid and fierce, but the hum of the space-heater helped to drown some of the noise out, and the light from the glow-lantern was a welcome comfort.

“Don’t go.” Luke had been dangerously drifting in and out of consciousness, mumbling incoherently whenever he stirred. Han was more than a little worried about him. In the short time they’d been in the shelter, he’d already given Luke two stim-shots, which the youth had been unresponsive to. One more and he was at the limit for the time. Here’s hoping the third was a charm.

“No,” the kid moaned quietly, and gave a little whimper.

“Sorry, kiddo.” Han apologized, rubbing the cold arm. One of the first things he did upon setting up the shelter was store Luke’s jacket and hat, which reeked of Tauntaun innards, in between the layers of the tent. He pulled the silvery thermal blanket back over Luke, who was resting on a pillow on his lap, then carefully, worriedly, brushed some of the kid’s hair aside that had fallen into his eyes. “Wake up for me, alright?”

He was surprised to find Luke’s forehead warm. Maybe it wasn’t just the cold and shock making him delirious- maybe it was fever.

“Don’t go,” Luke continued, this time near panic. He stirred, throwing off the blanket, breathing irregular, shaky.

“Hush, Luke.” Solo tried to calm him down. “It’s alright, kid. It’s me.” He pulled him back onto the pillow, and soothingly rubbed his arm. "Just relax." The Corellian couldn’t have been more surprised when Luke opened his eyes a moment later and looked up at him.

“Han?” he croaked tiredly.

A hopeful smile lit the other’s face. “Hey, you. 'Bout time you woke up.”

Luke looked thoroughly confused and frightened. He looked like he wanted to ask what was happening, but was having a hard time finding the words, or strength.

“I found you, kid,” Han reassured him. “We’re in an emergency shelter. Everything’s gonna be fine.” He forced confidence into his voice that he didn’t completely feel.

At this Luke seemed to calm. Thoroughly exhausted blue eyes took in his surroundings. They were glassy and Solo’s suspicions were confirmed- the kid was feverish. The numerous cuts and scratches on his face were oozing bright red with infection, and Han rifled through the survival bag in search the medkit.

“Alright, kid.” His search proved successful. “What do you say we patch you up?”

Luke brought a hand up to his face, as if just now realizing it hurt. Then he nodded weakly and closed his eyes, allowing his friend to tend to him.

Han found himself wincing more than Luke, trying his hardest not to hurt the boy as he gently cleansed the bruised, swollen cuts with an antiseptic wipe. Even being as young as he was, Luke would probably never fully recover- judging by the way he looked now. His youthful features would probably always retain some evidence of that day. Stars, what had happened?

“What did this, Luke?”

“Ice creature,” the youth murmured. His voice trembled a little.

“A wampa?” Han asked in disbelief, and Luke nodded.

“I’m sorry, kid.” Solo let it go at that. Now was not the time to talk about it- unless Luke really wanted to. It was no doubt traumatic, and the kid was already in pain.

“Not your fault,” Luke mumbled, being careful not to move his face too much when he talked, and also being careful not to show how much it hurt.

And for a while neither spoke. The only sound was the wind outside, which became so violent it often drowned out the hum of the portable heater. Exhausted and still delirious from fever, Luke tried closing his eyes to block it out. Off and on he thought he was back on Tatooine, listening to a bad sandstorm. Han focused his attention on tending to his young friend and bandaging his cuts. He still couldn’t help but wonder though how much abuse the insubstantial shelter could take.

“There, kid,” he finally spoke. “I think that about does it. You hurt anywhere else?”

Luke shook his head “no” faintly and Solo closed the medical kit.

“Thanks, Han,” Luke’s voice was quiet and still a little shaky. “For everything. For coming after me.”

“That’s what friends are for.” Solo grinned.

The young Jedi smiled back- the best he could anyway. The poor kid’s face was a mess. Glassy, tired eyes fell closed and the Corellian’s smile faded as he realized just how bad of shape his young friend was in. He was barely holding up. The shelter was barely holding up. They still had all night to get through.

“We’ll make it, Han,” the other answered Solo’s worried thoughts as if he’d heard them.

Han smiled and softly laid a hand on the tousled head of hair.

“You bet we will.”

But as the night wore on, Luke’s stamina wore thin. He tossed and moaned in feverish nightmares, occasionally calling out to Han, Ben, or his dead Aunt Beru. Over and over the youth would kick the thermal blankets off, and over and over Han would cover him back up. The kid was freezing, but he didn’t realize it. His latest dream had him in quite a state- shaking and moaning. Han had half a mind to just wake him; he was far from getting any peaceful sleep anyway.

“Luke.” He gently shook him. “Wake up. You’re havin' a bad dream, kid. Luke…”

But it was a sudden gust of wind that did the wakening. The gale whipped powerfully at the tent and Luke started, falling off the pillow and coming down hard onto his fist and the floor. Unfortunately, it was the injured side of his face that took most of the blow. The kid gasped a couple times, breathless with pain, before simply starting to cry.

Han watched the small figure, huddled face down on the floor begin to shake with quiet sobs. No doubt, the Corellian mused, he was getting soft because the pain within him for his “little brother” was greater than he’d ever felt.

“C’mere, kid. It’s alright.” Solo carefully helped the trembling form back up onto the pillow. Tears slid down Luke’s cheeks, a few falling onto the already pink-tinged bandages. “I know.” Han softly stroked the kid’s hair, waiting for the pain to subside and simply holding him. It was all he could do.

Luke eventually quieted, and drifted off into a feverish sleep again, but not before whispering a quiet “Thanks, Han,” to his best friend in the world. It was the last Solo heard from him that night. Luke eventually dropped into utter unconsciousness.

“Commander Skywalker, do you copy? This is Rogue Two.” The tinny voice came from the comlink, lost, buried somewhere beneath sleeping bag and blankets.

Han awoke fast. He shot up and began to crawl around the tent, frantically scrabbling at the ground. A smile spread across his face as he realized fully the implications of the call- It was morning. They’d made it.

If he could find the stupid comlink…

Finally. His numbed hands were trembling slightly as he thumbed the switch, perhaps from cold, perhaps from sheer happiness.

“Good morning! Nice of you guys to drop by.”

Han quickly checked on Luke before crawling out of the tent and into the welcome sunlight. He stood on shaky legs and waved at the approaching aircraft. Never in his life had he be been so glad to see a snowspeeder.

“You hear that, Luke? That’s our ride out there, kid.” Solo hurriedly stuffed what he could into the emergency kit. He wished Luke could share in the happy relief. Instead, the youth remained still and unresponsive, his breathing shallow, faint.

They’d made it this far together though; there was no giving up now. Luke was a fighter- he’d pull through.

Han couldn’t help but worry though as he lifted the prone form; the kid wasn’t anything to carry. Wrapping the thermal blanket more tightly around him, he was reminded how fragile life was, and how easy it was to lose. Balancing Luke on one hip, he shouldered the survival pack and with effort, made his way out of the tent.

“There’s only one passenger seat, Captain,” Zev informed Han, climbing down from the cockpit.

“That’s okay. We’ll make room.” Han could’ve waited for another ship, but he was hesitant to even leave the kid’s side. So he climbed into the back of the speeder, and with Zev’s help, managed to get Skywalker settled in too. There was just enough space for the kid to sit cradled across his lap. He was lucky he was small.

Compared to the long night Solo had just spent in a blizzard, the ride back was faster than a jump into hyperspace. The medical staff was anxiously waiting for them, along with a concerned Princess, Wookiee, and droids. As soon as Chewie lowered Luke down, the medics whisked the battered warrior off on a rolling stretcher.

Han was welcomed back with thankful hugs from Leia and Chewie, meanwhile insisting he was fine and refusing to receive medical attention. “I wanna make sure the kid’s okay first,” he had said. Quite a contradiction, Leia noted, in the man who claimed only to care about himself.

They weren’t allowed to be with Luke for quite some time, so his best friends stayed as close as they could to him, outside a glass wall. They watched the frozen youth for what seemed like hours- lying under layers of heated blankets, floating lifelessly in a tank- before he showed any signs of improvement. When Luke started to thrash about in the bacta, Two-One-Bee had announced he had “come out of dormo-shock” and “was responding well.” Only upon hearing this, did Han allow himself to get any rest. He stayed on a bunk close by though, and only slept for a couple hours. “Wake me if there’s any news,” he’d said.

Eventually the medical droids removed Luke from the gelatin-filled tank, and about an hour later, he was allowed visitors- one at a time, though everyone wanted to visit at once. They finally concluded that since Han was the one to go out and rescue Luke, he should be allowed to see him first.

When Solo entered the small med-room, the droids were starting an IV fluid drip on Luke. Exhausted as he was, the kid’s face lit up when he saw his friend.

“Han,” he croaked, smiling as much as his wounded face would allow. He weakly reached up a hand towards him.

“Hey there, kid.” Smiling, Solo came over and took the hand, which finally wasn’t ice cold. “Two-One-Bee here says you’re gonna be fine, huh?” He looked at the cuts on Luke’s face and noted with relief they were already healing. “Not even gonna scar.”

He smiled but Luke looked down, seemingly unhappy. “Thanks Han,” the younger man said quietly. His voice sounded troubled, almost choked.

“For what?”

“You know for what.” Now that Luke had had time to be awake and consider what had happened, reality was setting in.

“That’s what friends are for.” Han tried to shrug it off again, concerned at what was bothering the other.

“You could’ve died.” When Luke brought his head up, Han was surprised to see a tear roll down his cheek.

“Me? Nah.” He used his other hand to gently brush it away. Solo found that he couldn’t stand to see the kid hurting. It hurt him too. “And you would’ve died, if I hadn’t,” he added. “Besides, you know I like to press my luck.”

A small smile. “Yeah.” Luke still looked weaker than a baby Eopie though.

“You need your sleep, kid.”

The boy stubbornly shook his head, but his eyes were already starting to close.

“Yes, you do,” Solo grinned, and squeezed his hand. He was about to pull away when Luke spoke.

“You should’ve seen it, Han,” he said sleepily.

“Seen what?”

“The Wampa.” Luke forced back a yawn. “It was twice as wide as Chewie. I cut off his arm.” He added that last part in a bit proudly.

Han grinned. He would hear all the kid’s stories after he’d recovered more- no doubt he’d been through a lot. He’d also argue with Leia’s declaration that he’d “gone soft” and deny it thoroughly- where did she ever get an idea like that?! But he’d never question his own good judgment about going out in a Hoth blizzard because he had his "little brother" back safe and warm.

“Get some rest, kid.”

Luke did just that.

Missing scenes like this one can make the greatest Star Wars movie actually better. This would have been such a touching moment between Han and Luke showing how far Han had come in shedding the smuggler I-Help-No One-But-Myself attitude and creating a man who does "care about anything; or or anyone."

Great job!
