Title: The Laughing Force
Author: Lovely-in-Orange
Characters: Wes/OFC, Hobbie, Wedge, Luke, a few other former or current Wraiths and Rogues, some prequel characters
Timeframe: Vong War with flashbacks to pre-TPM and prequel era
Genre: A little of everything
Summary: Wes and Hobbie discover a woman frozen in carbonite since the days of the Old Republic. Can they trust her? And is it ever a good idea to play a prank on a Zabrak?
Notes: This story won’t rely much on the NJO books other than a bit on Allston’s Enemy Lines. Comments are appreciated.

+++++ CHAPTER 1 +++++

After months of war with the Vong, New Republic Intelligence picks up a strange signal that uses a code dating from the earliest days of the Empire. Winter Celchu deciphers the code to find a cryptic message. Fearing the discovery of information that could disrupt the still tenuous alliance between the New Republic and the remnants of Empire, a pair of trusted old friends are sent investigate the source of the signal. The signal originated from Hypori in the outer rim - site of a great battle of the Clone Wars.

“Couldn’t they have sent a group of commandos to back us up or something?” Hobbie said as he anxiously surveyed the entrance to a structure set in the side of a mountain. The terrain was rugged and it looked as if a recent planetquake or avalanche had sent boulders crashing through the roof of the structure.

“Aww, this place has been abandoned for years,” Wes responded confidently.

“You mean aside from the imperial coded transmission they picked up a few days ago,” Hobbie pointed out.

“Well yeah, aside from that. They said there was recent seismic activity. Maybe that set off some sort of old sensor,” Wes shrugged.

Hobbie continued to wear his dour look, not being convinced in the least.

“I doubt even the smugglers bother to come here, not with Tatoonie so close by,” Wes said, trying to reassure his friend.

“Well yeah, at least Tatooine has some cantinas with decent drinks, good music, and Twi’lek dancers.”

“We should get going… I’m sure there are all kinds of exciting things waiting inside. Like empty boxes. Or maybe even some stormtrooper’s collection of pet rocks. I hear that was always their favorite type of animal,” Wes said with mock enthusiasm.

Hobbie gave a resigned sigh, “I’ve got a bad feeling about this,” and joined Wes on the short walk from their x-wings to the entrance to the facility.

+++++ CHAPTER 2 +++++

With the aid of both astromech’s and creative use of Wes’s blaster, Hobbie and Wes finally managed to get the door open. The main room looked like a storage facility forgotten long ago. Cargo containers, once apparently neatly stacked, had tumbled to the ground and broken. Wall and ceiling panels seemed ready to fall down in places. Whether this happened long ago or from the recent planetquake was difficult to say. A few hallways split off from the main room and Hobbie and Wes elected to split up so as to complete their search as soon as possible.

Wes reached the end of the hall and opened a door which he assumed would lead to yet another private quarters. He noticed a security box attached to the wall – the kind he had seen used to detect a breach into a room and relay a signal. He suspected this might be where the signal Winter had intercepted originated. Rather than rely on the dim light of the glow rods, he activated the light switch, which amazingly was still in working order. He could see parts of this room had been damaged by the earthquake and the ceiling had begun to cave in on one side. A couple of large metal ceiling panels lay on the floor. The center of the room appeared intact and Wes began walking towards what looked like a large table or pedestal.

On the table lay a carbon freezing unit, though of a different design than he had seen before. Wes stood next to the table and looked down in surprise. A woman was frozen in the carbonite. Her features looked neither frantic nor peaceful, but were determined.

He tried to contact Hobbie, but couldn’t get a good signal from his communicator. Deciding Hobbie would find him eventually anyways, he went ahead and set the unit to thaw. The woman seemed to glow and the layer of carbonite began to peel away to reveal her. She was a Zabrak with skin as orange as an x-wing pilot’s flight suit. Several pale beige horns formed a crown-like circle around her hairless head. Most normal people might consider her appearance scary or strange rather than attractive, Wes thought. But then he had never exactly considered himself normal. Normal was no fun.

The strange woman’s hand shot upwards to grasp him painfully by the throat. Her eyes snapped open and looked towards his face, though they seemed rather out of focus.

“If you try to turn me over to those who put me in here and I will kill you, “ she said.

“….. not here …. to hurt you…” Wes managed to gasp out.

“Why are you here then? Who do you work for?” She loosened her grip just enough for him to speak.

“Look, I don’t know who you are. I just found you here and was trying to help you. I’m Colonel Wes Janson; an ace pilot for the New Republic.” Wes replied, sounding frustrated and anxious. He hoped he was right in assuming a Zabrak would not have been a friend to the Empire.

She frowned, “NEW Republic… that doesn’t sound good. What are you some sort of group trying to overthrow the Republic?”

“Err… overthrow the Republic? I was guessing you might have been abandoned here a long time ago, but I didn’t think…. Well I mean if you think the Old Republic is still around, you must have been napping here in carbonite for decades.” He reached up and gently clasped her wrist and she let him slowly move her hand away from his throat.

He heard familiar footsteps behind him, but before he could say anything, she reached to grab the blaster on his hip. Fortunately, instead of turning to look at Hobbie, he had kept his eyes on her and was able to grab her wrist in time to prevent her from getting a hold of his weapon.

“Relax, he’s an old friend, we came together….” Wes started to explain, hoping to reassure the woman.

“Hardly much of a recommendation….” She added skeptically.

“Besides you don’t really want to kill me. It would make my friend here, Hobbie, cry,” Wes said.

“And I left all my tissues back on the ship. Maybe you could at least wait until later…” Hobbie added.

The Zabrak woman sighed and seemed to relax a bit, “Perhaps I am too jumpy…”

Wes let go of her wrist, but continued to watch her warily, “Yeah, most attractive women wait until after I start talking to them before they try to rip my throat out…”

“Attractive? Hrm, everybody seems attractive in a pitch black room I suppose.”

Wes looked confused, “What? It’s not dark in here at all…”

Apprehension clouded the woman’s face, “But I don’t remember anything happening to my eyes…”

Hobbie looked towards Wes, “Wait, remember what Han told us? He couldn’t see much for hours after Leia brought him out of the carbonite.” Looking back at the woman he added, “Don’t worry, it’s just a side effect … it should start to gradually return.”

She nodded, and began to gingerly sit up. Both the pilots moved closer to help her but stopped as she gave them a warning look, “I may look helpless but…”

“….you could still kill us,” Wes finished, his voice mixed with both amusement and anxiety.

“Glad you realize it,” said the orange-hued woman. “Now, maybe you could take a look at my side. I think I got hit with some…”

The pair of pilots peered around to take a look. Embedded in her left side, upper arm, and shoulder were several pieces of wood. Around each piece, her pale beige tunic was stained with red blood.

“Sithspit.”

She turned her head towards Wes, “Sithspit? That’s a strange choice of…”

“That does not look good… we should send out a signal to the nearest ship with a medical capsule,” Hobbie said, sounding concerned.

“There’s some kind of interference in this room, I couldn’t get my communicator to work from in here. Hobbie, can you go back out to the main room to send the message? I’ll stay with her here…”

Hobbie seemed about to argue over who should stay with the woman, but he thought better of it. “Sure.” He briefly touched her hand sympathetically, “Don’t worry… they’ve fixed me up after I looked a lot worse. I’ll have them here soon.” He then turned to leave and hurried out of the room.

Wes asked, “Is there anything I can do for you? You must be in a lot of pain…”

“My Zabrak physiology makes me less sensitive to pain than most. But I suspect the amount of wounds I have would leave a human screaming or unconscious.”

“What did this to you?” He asked.

“A table,” She said in a tone that suggested that he would get no more out of her now.

Wes, however, was too persistent to drop the subject, “Oh yes. Tables. I once faced off against a hoard of killer tables. Thanks to my superior skills with a blaster I managed to make it through unscathed though.”

“And this is how you became a colonel? Your great victory at the Battle of Furniture?”

Wes grinned and started to reply, but stopped as her expression abruptly changed, “What is it?” He asked. And then he heard it. Blaster fire.

Sweet Pea Thanks, I'll try and keep them coming!

A9 Thanks! I thought Wes would be harder to write, but now it seems like once I start trying to think like him it's hard to stop.

Ok, next part!

+++++ CHAPTER 3 +++++

“Help me get down there; I’m still good in a fight.”

Wes started out of the room, calling back to her, “Right, a blind woman with a blaster. Just what I need. No, you stay there.”

The blaster fire had stopped by the time Wes got to the main room. He saw a group of strange droids in a circle around something. They were skeletal in shape with an elongated heads on top of stiff, backwardly canted necks. All were armed with heavy-duty blasters. Several lay on the ground destroyed - apparently Hobbie had taken out those.

Suddenly, the battle droids turned to face Wes. As they moved he saw what he had feared most, in the center of the circle of droids lay Hobbie. He was completely still and Wes could see blood from a blaster wound in his stomach.

“Where is the prisoner?” said a metallic voice, emanating from the closest droid.

Wes started edging closer to something that would provide him with some cover. “Prisoner? I don’t know where he is. I thought keeping track of him would be your job. Have you tried lost and found?”

“What is your name and designation?”

“My name and designation? Oh wait a second, I’ve got it right here… oh no, that’s not it. Hold on, here it is.” He fired off a few accurately aimed blaster shots before ducking behind cover. He thought he could here one of the droids saying, “Uh. That is not your name.”

He worked his way towards Hobbie, the debris in the room providing him with some cover. The droids didn’t anticipate his moves especially well and were not good shots, though one did manage to graze his shoulder with a lucky hit. The blaster fire seemed to stop by the time he got to his friend and he thought he might have gotten them all. He spared a glance down at Hobbie. The wound looked even worse up close and he wasn’t moving at all. He started to check more closely when he heard something rolling down the far hallway. He moved away from Hobbie, hoping to draw any blaster fire to himself rather than his friend.

Out of the corner of his eye he glimpsed an orange and white figure moving in to kneel next to Hobbie. Stubborn woman. She was going to get both herself AND Hobbie killed. How she had managed to make it down here while wounded, he had no idea.

He turned his attention back to the round copper-colored ball that was unfolding. He fired a blaster shot at it for good measure – whatever it was, couldn’t be good. The shot was too late, however. The droid had already unfolded and raised a shield that his blaster bolt bounced harmlessly off of. The droid began a barrage of fire that tore through the cargo crates Wes had been using as cover. He wasn’t going to be fast enough to get out of the way.

Suddenly a loose ceiling panel fell directly onto the droid, knocking it off its feet and bringing the shield down. It twitched under the panel, but Wes was able to destroy the destructive droid with a few blaster shots. He turned back to Hobbie and saw the woman kneeling beside him. She had one hand holding the side of his face and another resting on his shoulder. He thought she was checking on him, but her face seemed too serene somehow.

By the time he reached them, she slumped over and fallen unconscious. Wes knelt next to them and could see that Hobbie was breathing normally now. Though he was still in bad shape, he even looked a little better than he had several moments ago. The woman, however, looked worse. He saw that the wounds she had were starting to bleed again. He reached for his comm. device, hoping help would come in time.

+++++ CHAPTER 4 +++++

It was a long shuttle ride back to the ship. Or at least it seemed that way to Wes.
The medics had made it clear he was to stay out of their way so he had decided to stay up in the cockpit. However the shuttle pilot had asked him to leave after Wes asked for the fifth time they were almost there yet. He supposed he should get some rest, but he was really only good at sleeping when he wasn’t supposed to be. It was too bad that they never let him record flight briefings. He could have played them back and fallen asleep instantly.

Finally, they were brought to a base still controlled by the Republic. Hobbie and the woman were taken in immediately for surgery while Wes was treated for his more minor blaster wound. After the medical droid had taken care of him, Wes found a bench in the room outside the infirmary and settled in for more waiting.

The next thing he knew, he was laying across the bench and had an uncomfortable crick in his neck. Someone was trying to talk to him. He opened his eyes, even though he didn’t quite remember closing them. Wedge Antilles was leaning over him, trying to wake him up.

“Oh hey, Wedge,” Wes said sleepily as he sat up. He looked around sleepily and a little confused.

Wedge grinned at his groggy friend, “You’ve been out here sleeping for several hours…”

Somewhat more awake now, Wes asked with concern, “Hobbie, is he..?”

“He’s going to be just fine. They were surprised he didn’t die on the planet, but I guess they didn’t know that Hobbie’s good at surviving near-death experiences.” Wes’s expression brightened considerably at this. But then Wedge’s grin faded. “However, the woman you brought in….”

Wes’s smile faded now as well. “Is she okay?” He asked, worriedly.

“She should be, medically. But she put up a fight when they brought her out of the bacta tank. She tore apart one of the medical droids. The chief medic was able to calm her down, but she refused to go back into the tank. They’ve got her in a solitary room now.” Wedge looked at Wes questioningly, “Did you notice anything… violent or crazy about her before?”

Wes shook his head, continuing to talk as he stood up from the bench. “Well no. I mean she did grab me by the throat when she first woke from the carbonite. And she threatened to kill me a few times… but I don’t think she really meant it…”

“Right… I suppose that was just a way to tell you hello? I saw the report you gave the rescue crew… you don’t really have any idea why she was put in there. She might have been a prisoner…”

Wes interrupted, “She wanted to help us against the battle droids. I told her she was hurt too badly to move, but she followed me anyways… I think she was trying to help Hobbie somehow.”

At that moment, the door to the infirmary opened to reveal a rather frazzled looking chief medical officer. The man appeared to be in his sixties and looked as though he had worked a very long shift. But he looked a little relieved to see the pair of pilots. “Oh good. I was hoping you were still out here. I put some restraints on our patient after I gave her the sedative and I guess they’ve worn off now. The alarm just went off indicating she deactivated the restraints. Maybe you could both check on her? She’s in room 5.”

Wes answered for both of them, “Of course we will.”
