	Thanks for clicking! (First chapter is short.) Title: When My Mother Was a Yuuzhan Vong Author: Vongchild Genre: Angst/romance Subgenre: coming of age, interspecies romance (Vongy goes INSANE.) Couples: T/Jg (Implied, mentioned at points), OC/OC Summary: A young woman who has never thought twice about where she is going in her life struggles to support her best friend as he confronts the fact that he wants a different life than his ancestors, and in return has her entire world in turned on end as she begins to question her own path Notes: Short series of almost vig-like chapters. Eight to ten installments, methinks. As for the quotes, they’re random little things, from songs, things people around me have said (nothing is funnier than real life!) and famous people. When My Mother Was a Yuuzhan Vong Prologue, Age 7 I want to be where I've never been before I want to be there and then I'd understand Know I'm right and do it right Could I get to be like that How to know what I don't know Nothing more to gain -Two Points for Honesty, Guster When my mother was a Yuuzhan Vong, she forgot her name and cut up her arms. She spoke in their language and wrote in their letters. That’s how she learned it, really. When my mother was a Yuuzhan Vong, there was a war going on between her people and theirs, and so she was really confused. She’s not a Yuuzhan Vong anymore, though. That’s what she tells me. She’s a Jedi, and she’s my mom. And when I grow up, I want to be just like her. Chapter 1, Age 15 "They ate all the animal crackers? Man, and I really wanted to bite the head off of a camel." -Master Marksman Mark G. Torre always meets me for lunch outside the shipbuilding complex. There’s plenty of places to eat within the complex, but he always insists we eat somewhere else. So every day at 12:30 Zonaman standard time, when my classes end and he is given a break by the Master Shaper he trains under, we meet at an eatery halfway between the school and the complex. It was during one of these lunches when he looked up from his meal and announced, “I don’t really want to be a shaper.” I forced myself to swallow what was in my mouth before asking the necessary, “But why?” “Because I don’t,” he replied. I turned this news over in my head numerous times, trying to make up or down of it, and failed. For as long as I had known Torre, which was a long time (we’re Creche-mates,) he’d been set on being a shaper. “Why’d you change your mind?” I asked, studying his features, which were, though not human, easily readable. At least, to me they were. His expression conveyed it wasn’t a joke. “Jess,” he began to reply, intentionally mispronouncing my name, Chess, using the nickname I had had since childhood when I had spelled my name wrong. (What can I say? The Yuuzhan Vong letters for J and CH are very similar!) “I never really wanted to be a shaper. I only went along with it because it’s tradition in domain Yim. But recently, I did some thinking, and I realized that that’s not what I want to do with my life.” “So what are you going to do?” I asked. He ignored my question completely and continued. “Do you think that there’s anyone on this tradition-bound world who is really happy with who they had to become as they grew up? I don’t think there is. 	Chapter 2, Age 15 and one month ”In every generation, there are choice individuals who will dare to stick against the grain. It’s these splinters of tradition that will go on to be the inventors, the thinkers, the artists, the heroes, and the legends.” –Anon. There was steam rising off the fusion-formed pavement of the road, still warm from the sun, hit by the sudden rain, and there was laughter in the air; Torre’s and mine, as we ran barefoot out of the settlement. Barefoot because his sister took our shoes, running because we’d been cooped up indoors all afternoon. Our feet pounded on the packed dirt road, out past the school and the shipbuilding complex and everywhere else, silhouetted in the dying daylight as we tread barefoot between the trunks of full-grown boras and stepped carefully around seedlings. “There’s a clearing around here,” Torre murmured to me. A moment later, the branches above our heads parted to the bright orange and purple twilight sky. We stood, mesmerized, arm in arm, watching as stars appeared in the darkening atmosphere. After a long while – I don’t know exact measurements – half an hour – an hour – the night stretched over our heads, a perfect, glossy canvas speckled with diamonds. Again, Torre spoke of his plans to leave Zonama Sekot. Motioning to the stars, he softly said, “I’m going to be up there, Jess.” Standing there looking up at that limitless sky made me think about how vast the universe really was, and how far away “up there” was. I clung to his arm; I didn’t want to ever let go. Torre looked down at me, for he towered over me, no matter how old we were, and smiled a slight smile. Looking up at him, even in the faint light, I could detect a faint dark blush in his cheeks. “I’m going to get off this dirtball, and I’m going to fly,” he whispered, wrapping his arms around my shoulders. “One way or another, I’m going to be who I want to be – not what some dumb tradition says I should be.” “And me?” I asked. “You’re still going to help.” I buried my face into the rough material of his robeskin and cried. “I don’t want you to leave!” I sobbed. He kissed the top of my head, an action I regarded with some surprise. “I have to,” he replied softly, “Or else I’ll die here.” A week from that night, Torre made his first attempt at leaving the planet; his master dragged him back by the ear before he even got to the docking bay his flight was to leave from.
