Title: Dissolution
Author: Eleventh Guard
Timeframe: 55 ABY
Characters: Allana, Barchad (OC)
Genre: Angst/Romance
Summary: Allana is going back home to Hapes, and she has to say goodbye to Barchad, the Falleen man that helped her during a war five years earlier.
Word Count: Approximately 1850
Notes: This takes place 5 years after The Droid Empress (see profile for link), although it is written also to stand alone. Allana was named Kalare in that fic because it was written before the release of the novel in which her name was given. Her name has been corrected in the revision posted to www.fanfiction.net and a correction to the TFN version may be made at a later time. Barchad (three years older than Allana - 17 then, 22 now) was also introduced first in that story.

At fourteen, she thought she had known everything.

At fourteen, she had been very wrong.

Allana didn't dare think that she had all the answers now, five years later. If anything, she had more questions, but at least she'd stopped making assumptions about the future from limited information. At first, being doted on and treated almost like a goddess had been satisfying, even fun, and her vision of what her childhood should have been. She was the Princess of Hapes, the (at the time) only daughter of the Queen Mother; yet she spent most of her childhood on Ossus, trained in the ways of the Jedi, far away from the splendor of the palace. The Guerrican Sith Wars had almost cost her her life, but in the end, she emerged alive and with a hundred and one worlds at her fingertips.

She looked back now at the final battle with a different eye. She and three other Jedi had battled Emperor Vexon and worn him down; it was she who struck the final blow, but only by chance. When the defeat of his heiress left the Guerrican Imperial throne to no one, she was able to take it by force and sign a surrender, ending the war and putting her at the head of the government. She had to resign from the Jedi Order to do that, but it was clearly the only choice, and millions, if not billions, of lives were saved.

It was not, as she had thought, a golden opportunity for her to grow into the royal position that she was born to. It was the imperfect solution that ended some of the machinations of those who would rule far more ruthlessly, and it bound her more tightly than the teachings of the Jedi ever did. In the last half of a decade she had no real home, and was constantly troubled by disputes in her worlds, both major and minor. She felt as though she had aged fifteen years in only five, and it was not going to improve, not even now, when the restoration of the worlds conquered by her predecessors was complete and the Guerrican Imperium broken and replaced by a confederation of the Hundred Worlds.

She had to go back to Hapes and do it all over again - and this time, taking up the crown was not a temporary measure. There was no one after Allana. She had promised her mother, Queen Mother Tenel Ka, that she would rule in her place, and free her from the palace intrigues and border squabbles so that she could follow her destiny to be a Jedi Knight and, perhaps, someday a Jedi Master.

Allana kept her promises, even ones that hurt.

Her bags had been packed for several weeks, and now waited for her on a small Hapan shuttle in the hangar bay of the Gradian Embassy. She stood on the balcony of her temporary room at the Embassy, barely noticing the glittering railings or the carved marble benches that had been made just for her. What she saw was the thick gray clouds gathering overhead, darkening the late morning to dusk and threatening to pour sheets of rain over the capital city. A chilly wind blew across and picked up the heavy hem of her white robes. They were pushed back to reveal the forty-centimeter platform shoes that she constantly wore to give her the appearance of being larger than life. Never mind that she could barely walk in them, and without her admittedly truncated Jedi training, would never have been able to keep her balance enough to prevent falling over at most inopportune and embarrassing times. They, like everything else, built her up to a figure of blossoming myth, concealing and confining what was true.

She sensed a presence behind her and slowly turned around. It was nothing sinister; she didn't have the developed danger sense that many true Knights had, but she would know if someone snuck up on her. The one standing in the arched doorway of the balcony was only a member of the Hundred World royal guard, Captain Barchad Digo. The young Falleen man was the son of the brutal Emperor, disinherited for being too weak in the Force to make a suitable apprentice for his Sith father. He'd exacted revenge in his own way - by siding, ultimately, with the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances at the end of the war, and now supporting Empress Allana.

Who was only a Princess, now, and of sixty-three worlds, not over a hundred. For the next two standard days, she would at least be freed of the responsibility of billions of sentients looking for a leader where there should have been a curious girl.

"The shuttle is ready for departure, Your Imperial Majesty," he said.

Allana nodded stiffly. "Thank you, Captain. I am aware of this. Also, you may now address me as Your Majesty, for I am but a princess. The Hundred Worlds are independent in all but name and I have not been given my mother's crown." Her voice was muffled, underneath a layer of white silk and a layer of heavy gold microchain fabric that covered her face from the top of her nose down past her chin.

A bolt of lightning streaked across the sky and shot downward to strike a metal rod on the city's perimeter. She sighed and turned away from railing, then went back inside, letting the tall double doors slam shut behind her.

"Major Riven cautioned against flying in a thunderstorm," said Barchad, "because of the unpredictability of storms this side of the Eastern Mountains. However, this storm lacks the wind speed to threaten your shuttle, and thus the decision of whether to depart now or tomorrow is yours."

"It never was anyone else's." Allana felt cold even in the heated room, even under her shift, gown, and robe, and she sat on the end of her bed, wrapping her arms around her middle. It didn't help very much. As much as she had grown to detest being watched at all times, being needed at all times, she wasn't certain she wanted to leave yet. There were still a few things that she liked about being at the head of the Hundred Worlds, and wasn't quite ready to give up.

Barchad glanced towards the doors that left from the room to the Embassy hallway, and then sat down next to Allana. While standing, they were almost the same height, both a bit over two meters, but sitting, he could easily rest his chin on the top of her veils. He covered her arms with his and grasped her hands gently. "I can go with you to Hapes," he said. "Say the word, and I will resign from the royal guard and follow you home."

"You cannot." Allana shook her head and leaned back against him. "My family has resisted marriage to other Hapan families for so long that the others grow restless, and I will have to choose a husband from one of them. Otherwise, they might unite against me. And there has been enough resistance to a Dathomiri and a human Jedi; they would never accept you. If you came to Hapes with me, it would almost guarantee an attempt at revolution."

"It would seem, then, that the Queen Mother has less power than any other. You cannot choose your own guards?"

"We have spoken of this already." Allana frowned. "You would be no more than a slave, and there would be attempts on your life from outraged nobles. You will stay with the Hundred World guard and not risk your life to be the lowest of the palace servants."

"If that is your decision, Your Majesty, then I accept it."

Allana jumped up, tearing herself away from Barchad's embrace, and she whirled around to face him. She almost tripped on the hem of her robe and strained to stay upright. "It isn't my decision! It was made thousands of years ago by people I never met! And stop that now; don't even try to sway my mind with your pheromones. I was trained as a Jedi for several years, and I will resist it."

Barchad opened his hands and raised them, palms outward. "I apologize if I have offended you, then, Your Majesty."

"You didn't offend me. They did. The faceless harpies, they did it all." Her vision blurred and she struggled to maintain control. "And I need to leave now."

"Then I would not want to hold you up. I can escort you as far as the hangar bay, if you desire, Allana."

At the sound of her name, she threw herself at him, and the thumb-sized gems on the front of her robe scratched against the buttons of his jacket. Her ringed fingers clutched at him, one hand on his bony back and the other tangled in his long black hair. "I don't want to go," she wept. "I have to, because I promised that I would, and there is no other way. My mother should be with the Jedi; she has talents that I don't, and never will."

"The good of the many over the good of the few," Barchad said. "I can understand that much." He let her cry until she was done, and it didn't take long for her to pull herself back together, but when she stood back and removed her veil, the thick paint on her eyelids had run in streaks and made haphazard stripes down her gold-coated face.

Allana pulled off her gossamer fiber gloves to wipe at the paint, but he took a handkerchief out of his pocket first and blotted most of it away, taking care to remove the excess gloss from her lips. "I never liked the white slick anyway," he said. "It tastes like clay and it is a bother to get it out from between my scales."

"Try wearing it eighteen hours a day, even at dinner," she said, and let a tiny glimmer of a smile appear. Her gray eyes met his yellow and black ones, and she dropped her Jedi shielding and let herself be drawn to him once more, heartbeats briefly synched, too many pieces of clothing tangled on too many accessories, in a final kiss.

Allana picked herself up with practiced balance and shook out her clothes so that they fell in their carefully ironed and starched folds. "The shuttle," she said in a tone too composed to be natural. "I am sure my mother's pilots wonder what is taking me so long."

Barchad nodded slowly, and donned his hat and blaster rifle. They walked side-by-side down the long halls and two stairwells, never saying a word. By the time they reached the open hangar, the thunderstorm had begun its angry assault on the city, and rain poured down over the rows of shuttles and closed hovercars housed there. Four other members of the Hundred World royal guard came forward with a mobile canopy, three meters on a side, to cover Allana as she crossed the hangar, but she waved it away and insisted on walking in the rain.

If her face was soaked by the rain, then a few tears would likely go unnoticed.

Thank you happy I'm glad someone read it and liked it. It was a little idea I had... that she might have been all gung-ho about being a ruler before, but if she finds love and then has to give it up, it might lose a bit of its sparkle. (I'd actually planned this 'ship from TDE, but it wouldn't have worked for a few years yet.)

Oh, that was so touching. *sniffles*

It's sad when you learn that reality isn't the same as your dreams. sad

Lovely work!

SilSolo: I suppose he does... she started it, though! laugh Leaving him for Hapes. *shakes head* Like mother, like daughter, kinda. Nah, they know splitting up is necessary, but don't want to admit it because then it's a "no" instead of a "probably not." Thanks!

Amidalachick: Thank you happy

ZaraValinor: Thank you happy I was experimenting a bit with descriptions since I tend to skimp on them a little, but with Allana it's easier because I get such vivid pictures of her in my mind. (She's one of my favorites grin ) BTW, love the icon. wink

Healer_Leona: Thank you... I wish I could have written a happy ending for her, but I can't really see ruling Hapes as a fun thing for someone who isn't ruthless by nature.

Amon_Amarth: Thank you! happy It's a follow-up to a much longer fic, but stands alone too. She was 14 when a (now quite AU... it was borderline canon at the time of writing) war was going on between some Sith and other people. Barchad's dad was the main bad guy.
