[Disclaimer: Star Wars, the GFFA, and probably most of the interstellar Void, all belong to George Lucas. This is just an individual critical and artistic commentary on the characters, locations, situations and dynamics of the Star Wars mythos.

It also, in this case, involves a romantic pairing between a human and a Wookiee, and a resulting interspecies pregnancy....

Well, it’s Monday Mush Mania... so you didn’t expect me to do something obvious like Mara Jade/Anakin Solo, did you? wink

This ’fic represents a sequel (of sorts) to the beginning that I posted as
WOOKIEE NOOKIEE back in November. Serious thanks to Tahi, for the initial image of someone listening to a sleeping Wookiee snoring; but I want to stress that she's not responsible for what I did with that image, or the 'shippiness involved in the eventual 'fic.

And, yes; my mind is in the gutter. We’re all in the gutter... but some of us are looking at the sea of stars... grin peace ]

“Let Sleeping Wookiees Lie”

A sub-steerage berth aboard the Rebel Princess probably wasn’t the most romantic way to travel across the Galaxy.

To say that it lacked luxury or comfort was a sharp understatement – and to call it a ‘berth’ was probably something of an overstatement, too. The ‘underclass’ quarters aboard the Princess consisted of bare corridors on the ageing liner’s cargo deck, with nothing more than numbers stencilled on the bulkhead to mark the individual places for each passenger.

They slept – or tried to – sitting with their backs propped against their numbers on the wall, wrapped in whatever they had managed to bring aboard in their limited luggage-weight allowance: travelling cloaks, ponchos, the occasional bedding mat.

Somewhere between Coruscant and Kashyyyk, the dark-haired woman in berth O-7 blinked in the darkness – sleepy, but unable to sleep. She shifted her weight, and tried not to wake the Wookiee snoring next to her.

It wasn’t most people’s idea of fun, she knew.

But it was cheap and discreet. There was an honesty about it that she approved of.

The other passengers were just a faint murmur, really; what filled her head was the tang of filtered air and the heavy smell of Wookiee fur; the distant, insistent drumming of the ship’s drives, and the loud growl of the Wookiee snoring.

Jaina Solo smiled sleepily.

Actually, as far as she was concerned, this probably was the most romantic way to travel across the Galaxy.

Maybe her hormones were making her biased about that, though. Or maybe it was just the way that it served to restate the personal declaration of independence she’d made three days earlier.

She traced the palm of her hand around the curve of her belly, opening her mind to the twin pulse of life from her children, and answering with a mother’s smile.

The snoring Wookiee next to her joined in, wrapping his voice around the medley of breathing and heartbeats. She gave a little gasp, like a lover, as she found the twin heartbeats of her children, and heard the babies react to the sound of their father’s snoring.

Their father...

She shifted her weight slightly, and glanced up at the black silhouette of the big guy next to her. Unlike her, he seemed to be having no difficulty sleeping in the corridor – head tipped back to rest his crown against the bulkhead, jaw wide open, sharp fangs showing. His chest was rising and falling in a steady rhythm, and he was snoring loud enough to wake the dead.

And Jaina Solo didn’t care

She wanted to shift up tight against him, running her hands through his sleek, thick fur; she wanted to stretch up and kiss him firmly on the lips.

Actually, she wanted much more than just a chaste kiss.

But, right now, she didn’t want to wake him.

And, anyway, she was happy with wanting to do it – imagining, desiring; being in love, and knowing that her man loved her back.

She supposed most people would say that they were crazy. They’d fallen in love, she’d gotten herself pregnant by a Wookiee, and they’d handed in their lightsabers before the Jedi Order threw them out.

They hadn’t even hung around on Coruscant to hear the High Council’s verdict. She’d walked out into the open air arm in arm with Lowie, grinning together at the small knot of news reporters, and then they’d taken the first air-tram to the spaceport.

She wondered what the other people aboard the Rebel Princess thought about them – a pregnant woman and a Wookiee, travelling together. The Hergelics and Verpine who had the berths on either side of them didn’t seem much interested in making conversation.

She supposed that word might be getting around the passengers and crew; but how much attention did other people pay to the news from the Jedi Temple? How much did they care about the scandal that was transfixing the Order, or the silent chorus of concerned frowns it was provoking from the Galaxy’s political élite?

She wasn’t sure what outsiders thought, she supposed. She didn’t really know. But she was looking forward to finding out.

She drew a quiet breath, and suddenly, she felt dizzy, crazy.

There was a whole Galaxy out there, the real Galaxy that the closed focus of the Jedi never really took in – stars, planets circling around them, a myriad of different people and places; there were the several thousand people just aboard the old passenger liner, hopes and fears and strength and weakness – and life.

And, carried along on the bright, clean currents of the Force, she saw the four of them: herself, her life-mate, and their unborn children; a young family, wrapped together in a shawl of bright Force light.

What did it matter what people thought?

In two days, they would be arriving at Kashyyyk. No lightsabers, no X-wings, twins to bring to term – children who, they both knew, might never be truly accepted in either human or Wookiee society.

Jaina felt herself tremble, and realised that she was laughing lightly, a movement that made the babies kick inside her. She stretched her free arm out to wrap a hug around her Wookiee, and nuzzled a smile against Lowie’s chest.

The idea that ‘human’ or ‘Wookiee’ society could close ranks against them seemed suddenly, unintentionally hilarious. Her son and daughter – all her children – would be citizens of the Galaxy. They would have a family, a home, a future.

Without really trying, they’d already proved that the Galaxy was bigger than the people who didn’t like it. The objections all seemed faintly absurd, when faced with a girl and a Wookiee in love.

She leant back against Lowie’s hairy chest, smiling and nuzzling and sharing the moment with her unborn son and daughter. Together, they listened to the strong, steady sound of her husband, their father, snoring.

Jaina couldn’t remember the last time she’d felt so... happy.

The Beginning...

how to describe this... i guess the best way to do so, would be "sweet"

There's something life-affirming in Jaina's POV here, and oddly enough, it's something that is lacking from the Jedi POV. For all their talk about being servants of life, they have a distinctly death-centric view of things. It's even written in their code ("There is no death, there is the Force")

Great job, Thrawn!

hmmm... I will admit to not being sure if you're laughing with or at us, but I'm going to go with 'with'. wink

This reminds me quite a bit of a group of novels loosely called the Sholan Alliance Novels wherein a human female and a feline-alien male were life-mated after a strange bond formed between them. Carrie, the female, had a lot of the same feelings about her resulting children as Jaina here.

So, very mushy and perfect for MMM. Thanks for joining us. grin

Exactly. Loved your insights on Jaina's thoughts... applause

On the other hand, do you know what I'd like to read? I'd like to read something from Lowie's POV, how he feels about the different lifespans of humans and Wookiees... grin

I am puzzled... why would they quit the order? Marriage is allowed. Just 'cause they aren't of the same species and may raise a few eyebrows wouldn't mean they'd be kicked out.

Otherwise, I liked it... but, gee, I fear what the labor is gonna be like... Wookie babies are HUGE!

Thanks, Kidan! I'm glad you liked it - and, you raise a very good point on the... fatalism, perhaps... that seems to weigh down the Jedi, and which, ironically, seems to seperate them from their own highest principles...

A very good question! In hindsight, I can see that I'd somewhat sublimated/internalized the reasons when I was writing this 'fic.

To explain: the problem is that Jaina's carrying half-Wookiee twins... and concieving kids with a Wookiee is a use of the Force that the Jedi consider </Palpatine>"un-natural"</Palpatine>...

Also, underneath that, there's probably some old-fashioned prejudice, not always conscious or coherent - that, anyway, was how I think I was analysing Jaina's POV on it...

She's a princess, and we know how crazy some people get about her bloodline. Technically, her kids have a claim to be the heirs of Alderaan, Corellia, and Darth Vader... and they're going to be half-Wookiee!! grin

Alexis_Wingstar posted:

Hey! They're only half-Wookiee... tongue

But, yeah... and Jaina's quite small, too. According to some sources, she's about the size of a newborn Wookiee already... tongue

So true. I think some Jedi individually DID understand and embrace this - but collectively they did rather blinker themselves.

The image of hairy babies for some weird reason made me think of that episode of Father Ted - with the milkman. LOL

But seriously - loved the descriptions of Jaina's thoughts and feelings. It emphasised her essential in-love-ness which was really sweet and well, mushy. happy

I think my Chewie dog would like this, too, if she could read. wink
