Purple is also the color or royalty.

Grapes are purple, too! I love grapes! Especially the seedless ones!

And I am most definitely not gay.

...not that there's anything wrong with it.

Purple is a great color for a lightsaber. I would like to see a yellow one though.

Although, don't you think it was a little arrogant for Sam Jackson to beg to be in the new SW movies on Letterman and then demand a different color lightsaber so he stands out in a crowd? Ahhh, the Hollywood ego :P

The only problem I ever had with the purple lightsaber is that it set Mace apart. It almost elevated him above Yoda when it was established that Yoda would use the common green color. Visually, it adds more importance to Mace. If anything, Lucas should have either stayed with blue and green only or, if he wanted to set someone apart with a different color lightsaber, it should have been Yoda.

Agreed. Actually, perhaps this was just wild rumor, but I believe that I once heard that George was considering giving Yoda an orangish color blade. However, when he ran test footage, the orange did not clash well enough with the red of Dooku's saber, so the idea was dropped.

Can somebody help me out - is there any truth to that?

cool Mace Windy,

I wasn´t like SLJ was angry with George, saying "If I don´t get purple, I´m outta here!" He merely suggested it and George agreed. If George hadn´t agreed, it wouldn´t have been purple.

just a thought, but given that every Jedi creates his/her own lightsaber isn't it up to him/her to choose a colour... like sure we're talking about the metaphor here, but maybe the character mace just liked purple and decided to get (or make) himself a purple crystal... and surely yoda wouldn't desire a different coloured lightsaber even if he is perhaps the most worthy, it seems almost out of character.

Mace, I was just responding to Jonas "they are just colours" bit.

But to be honest, it was sad to note that the most accomplished Jedi swordsman moves was so...... boring. The skill of Mace Windu was not adequately displayed in AOTC. One would have expected him to display the skill and grace of Obiwan in ANH at least.

Hmm...having looked at great detail at Obi-Wan's moves in ANH, I'd certainly say Windu was at least the measure of that in AOTC.

Old Ben still kicks ass in defense, but his days of flippy twirly are long behind him by ANH. If Lucas decides to add a scene with him backflipping over a balcony whilst deflecting laser shots, I'll change my mind of course tongue

I disagree. The people with the most skill are the ones who don't even look like they're trying. The ones who make it look effortless. That's Mace: no showing off, no unnecessary flips and twirls, just raw efficiency.

Look at sports, the truly great ones never seem to be trying. There are some who are showboats. But take Jerry Rice. Unquestionably the greatest reciever ever. Maybe the best player ever. But he never danced, never showed off. He never seemed to be running fast, but never seemed to get caught.

Wasn;t the inuniverse epxlanti that Mace was testing out a new type of sabre crystal, which gave it its purple hue?

As far as the real world one, he asked, and Lucas agreed. He also asked that thye acrve the initials in his sabre hilt, so they did. I'm fairly sure if Liam had asked somehting similar, he'd have gotten it too.

True on both counts: "in-universe," it's the electrum crystals that imbue his lightsaber with their violetesque coronal hue..."out-of-universe," it's that Samuel liked the notion of a purple 'saber, and George acquiesced.

Gentlemen, Mace Windu lightsabre skills, were average. There was no noticeable footwork, the deflection of blasters on the balcony leveraged on his speed rather than on his position and his battle against Jango Fett merely relied on his ability to deflect blaster bolts(although thankfully, there were no more flashy twirling and swinging).

His skills were only amazing, if you compare them to the wannabes hanging around in the arena. To say it again, Eps II did not display the skill of Mace Windu sufficiently. It showed that yes, he knew his stuff, but we didn't see any skill like what we saw with Ray Park.

Well, actually you're referring to Sam Jackson's skills, not Mace Windu's skills. Sam Jackson can only be as good as Sam Jackson. Maybe ILM could have helped out more and made him look more impressive, more like the master swordsman that Windu is supposed to be, but I think they were going more for someone who didn't look like they were trying. Less is more, in other words.
