	It's a set-up. Why would Tuskins torture a woman they captured at random? It wasn't a ransom situation, they weren't using her as a slave (you don't torture slaves if you want to get any work out of them - that'd be like wrecking your chainsaw and then trying to cut down trees)I think Sideous set it up to aid Ani's conversion to the dark side. Where did the speeder Ani rode to find his Mom come from? Was it Lars' or Owen's? Did he bring it on Padme's ship? It doesn't really look like something a farmer would ride. It's just...there.

	My view is that this was another homage from Lucas to John Ford's "The Searchers". Remember "A New Hope"? Luke finding his uncle and aunt dead, the smoke coming out of the ground? That was clearly a homage to "The Searchers". 	I gathered that they were trying to find a weakness of her at first. But the longer she survived the more curious the tuskins became because she was a woman and she stood up to alot of pain and suffering.

	The Tusken Raiders have a rite of passage ritual that includes torturing another being as long as possible before they actually die. 	Exactly. A recent issue of Star Wars Insider - the one with Aayla Secura on the cover - gave some grave details about the Tuskens and their torture methods. It's actually a requirement in order for them to achieve their status in the tribe. 	In the Visual Dictionary, there is mention of the fact that the Tusken Raiders and Moisture Farmers are at odds, so it is no surprise that the Tusken Raiders would kidnap a moisture farmer (Shmi). 	See, Darth Sidious, the clone of Palpatine's half-brother twice removed, is also Anakin's father's brother's uncle's sister's nephew's former roommate. Actually, he is Dooku's father, and Anakin is a clone of Dooku who was secretly implanted in Shmi while she was high on deathsticks, but that's getting off the topic. Anyway, he orchestrated the torture of Shmi, knowing it would cause Anakin to go to Tatooine, kill the Tusken Raiders, and then turn to the Dark Side. This is how he explained his plan: Sid: OK, you guys kidnap this one woman. Kill everyone else, but just torture her for a little bit. Tusks: Uh! Uh! Uh! Sid: In a month or so, her really PO'd son (a clone of my son, who at 80 is a good 30 years older than me) is gonna come and slaughter you all. Everything is proceeding exactly as I have forseen! 	I actually find it a ridiculous idea that it was the hand of sidious. At that point anakin isn't that important to him, it is possible of course, it is star wars, but in my eyes it would discredit these great scenes. -----signature----- I am going crazy, it keeps me from going insane...

	This is all well and good - as possible background. But the majority of this "rite of passage" or "mindless killers" seems more like an after thought to explain the occurrence in the movie. I concur with the original poster. In terms of the story, in terms of the characters, it would make much more sense for Sidious to have arranged the kidnapping with the instructions to keep Shmi alive. Sidious knows Anakin is the Chosen one Sidious knows where Anakin came from Sidious knows Anakin misses and deeply cares for his mother Sidious is a master at manipulation Sidious is a master at foresight I tend to think that Sidious paid off the Tuskens to capture Shmi, torture her, and keep her alive, knowing that Anakin would feel it and come to save her. I tend to think Sidious knew full well, when he "hired" the Tuskens, that they would all die at Anakin's sabre. In terms of the story, it is much more dramatic to postulate that Sidious orchestrated the entire situation.
