Actually, serials are still made today, but not often in movies, more often on TV. It's called the mini-series. Lonesome Dove, Winds of War, etc.

That's a bit of a stretch. It takes more than a movie and a couple of sequels to make it a seriel. There is a certain formula, and while The Lord Of The Rings is very good, I wouldn't call it a modern day seriel. Star Wars obviously is as well as the Indiana Jones films. They adhere to the seriel formula. Now please don't ask me what the formula is becase I don't feel like explaining it.

LOTR fits it better than many others. It, like the BTTF trilogy, is one continuous narrative. The Star Wars film all skip years between movies. Old movie serials always picked up immediately after the previous episode left off.

yup. the LOTR movies are the only trilogy to offer true serial-style cliffhangers at the ends of pt 1 and 2. thankfully (thank you PJ) this is the only device the filmmakers took from old serials.

the only SW movie that comes even close to having a cliffhanger ending is ESB, though the rest of the movie is the episode LEAST like those godawful serials that so enthralled Lucas.

The LOTR films don't end in cliff hangers so much as they just kind of end. Each of Lucas' movies, on the other hand, are self-contained stories like the seriels of old but with a satisfying conclusion, making them much more in keeping with the spirit of the golden age of cinema.

what exactly is the "golden age" of cinema, and how do really crappy, z-grade serials have to do with this so-called era?

please describe this "spirit of the golden age" by giving examples of it in old serials and SW. please be specific.

Those "godawful" serials pioneered flying special effects(see ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL), miniatures(see S.O.S. COASTGUARD and nearly every other Republic serial), fistfights...the list could go on and on.

Just because serials don't seem to fit into our modern sensibility doesn't mean they should be dissed. The simple entertainment they provided to two generations is enough reason to respect them, not to mention their massive influence on our great modern filmmakers(Lucas, Spielberg, Cameron and, yes, even Peter Jackson).

Sorry to jump right in. I only read the very first post.

Well whatever...

All I will say is that you have STAR TREK. It has 10 movies to it's credit. Then you have the other serial movies love them or hate them. It's not a dead issue. Of course with LOTR done there is no telling whether someone else will step into the middle earth fray and do THE SILMARILLION. Several movies can come out of that. laugh

Have you ever watched CAPTAIN MARVEL? How about the Dick Tracy serials? Or THE CRIMSON GHOST? Or just about anything made by Republic from 1937 to 1946? These are far from "godawful", they are still extremely entertaining, fastpaced and action packed. These are far better than the FLASH GORDON serials, or the BATMAN AND ROBIN chapter plays, which seem to be all that most modern audiences have seen. Don't judge a whole genre because of a few bad examples.

Geez, Dahveed, you're just bound and determined not to let anybody make a positive comment about Star Wars.
