oh and to remain somewhat on-topic, cliffhanger serials like Flash Gordon were terrible then. why its a point of pride for GL to refer to them as influences (whether they are or not) when no one who cares about SW was even born (or their parents even) when they were popular is a bit strange.
It's clearly your opinion that the old seriels are "terrible" and you make a further offense by suggesting that "no one who cares about SW" could possibly enjoy these seriels or appreciate Lucas' brilliant homage to them through his
Star Wars
movies.
As for the intent of the movies, yes, paying homage to the flicks that Lucas enjoyed as a kid is a big part, but it's also to create a modern mythological tale, rich in meaning yet enjoyable on the surface. That's what Lucas wants to accomplish, and whether he is successful or not is debatable, although such debates are rarely fruitful.
why in gods name would u attempt to duplicate or adapt this "style"?
To recapture fond memories of one's youth, no doubt. The fact that
Star Wars
continues to be immensely successful speaks for itself.

and Durwood give the personal attacks a rest. if you had actually played a part in the production of these movies, it might make sense for you to be upset enuf to insult others who criticize them.
please stop this, as it hurts peoples feelings and adds nothing to the discussion.
whether you believe it or not, an attack/critque of the PT is not somehow aimed at you.

so this is why "there is no difference" between the OT and the PT? this is why the "acting and dialogue" are basically the same?
btw, you just described the intent of: LOTR, Matrix, X-men, and virtually every large-scale genre movie from yesterday, today or tomorrow. the only difference is that very very few have been succesful in this endeavor. BUT THE INTENT IS EXACTLY THE SAME!!

say what? you mean GL's memories of HIS youth? why did you say "one's youth"? and what does this have to do with the commercial success of SW?
and again, the "acting and dialogue" in the serials were TERRIBLE. this may add to their charm in a nostalgic sense, but why oh why would u direct your actors using this template? weird. in fact i have trouble believeing he actually said that.

more snide remarks? how about an apology man? if youre a little kid never mind. but if youre a grown up i think you really should stop trying to annoy people or hurt their feelings. or try to make them feel stupid (which is absurd. i mean are we talking Brecht or SW here?).

Fortunately, Lucas is independently wealthy and is making these movies in the same fashion as the old ones, with the same bits of clunky dialogue and all.
Thank the Maker!

Dahveed:
I've given my explanations, but you keep rebutting with "But why?" rhetoric. It gets a little tiring. Frankly, I've said everything I care to say on the subject, so if you want to increase your understanding of my position then kindly reread my excellent and noteworthy submissions in the above posts.

Finally, now think hard, when is the last time anyone has seen a serial from the 30's 50's era?
Well, the formula seemed to work in the Indiana Jones films, didn't it?

Yes Indiana Jones is great, I went in knowing all I was going to see was b movie style film making, I always thought more of Star Wars, that while it was fun their was some deep meaning ingrained into it's core, that was before the dark times, before the coming of the prequels.
I like the action aspect of Flash Gordon, but to employ the same kind of acting/dialogue techniques as seen in these movies is lazy and stupid in the case of Star Wars.

"If Lucas had said that the new set of movies were just based on serials I wouldn't have a problem..."
Me neither!
I would love to see a full-length movie starring Cap'n Crunch... Toucan Sam... or how about a series of cliffhangers starring Snap, Crackel & Pop?
The animated series starring Fred and Barney was a cinematic epic!
Serial Films... now THAT'S my idea of a good time!

"this thread made me think of a good title for the next installment in the star wars "serial": Return Of The Excuses.
"people always thought star wars was bad"
"its supposed to be that way, thats what george intended"
"its an homage to bad movies so thats why its bad"
same excuses, different thread."
The people who enjoy the prequels don't have to make any excuses, Dr.E. We believe that they're good films (or at least good Star Wars films). What excuses do you have?
