I find it ironic that whenever sub-par effects are pointed out in competing franchises like Spider-man and The Lord Of The Rings, the respective filmmakers are praised for putting the story over the effects, but if Lucas were to include similiar quality effects in his films he'd be roasted for not keeping up with the times.

I'm not trying to disparage Sam Rami or Peter Jackson but only wish to point out the unfair double standard under which Lucas is placed. This double standard is most perplexing when the prequels are criticized for the exact same things the originals are praised for (effects, dialogue, acting, etc.)

Often times I think the self-styled movie cynics popularized by the internet are doing nothing but cheating themselves out of enjoying some damn fine movies, and I'm not just talking about Star Wars.

darts being fired everywhere, you got a problem hack in two with a lightsaber, negotiating with so called separatists, by the way why the hell are they separating????? Pretty mindless, that's what a serial is all about, it's kind of like pornography it makes no pretense that it even has a story, in this case it skips straight to the action instead of sex.

"Who are these Rebels and exactly why are they rebelling? And whose this dude in black? He must be the bad guy because they always wear black. And what's all this about the senate not condoning an attack on some non-descript spaceship?"

Skipping straight to the action indeed. "This double standard is most perplexing when the prequels are criticized for the exact same things the originals are praised for."

The Separitists are systems that do not agree with the central government, and they are breaking away from that central government, the Republic.

Is it that hard to understand?

Were the serials understandably "bad" because they had to keep up the pace of "one per week," or "one per month," or something?

George struggles to maintain his shooting and post-production "schedules..."

Hmm...

Do not agree with the central government???? Over what??!?!?! Just all of the sudden they don't agree with the idea of the republic the way that it is? I fail to see why they're separating besides the fact that it drives the movie.

Nute Gunray is a member of the Sepratists, and he was involved in that little dust-up over Naboo trade routes, a matter which the Republic put an end to and not in his favor. So by way of extrapolation, we can conclude that the Sepratists are those who feel that they have been treated unfairly by the Republic.

Honestly, it's not that hard to figure out.

Just like many people don't agree with the U.S. government. I don't know why people don't agree with the U.S. government... do we really have to know why the separitists don't agree with teh Republic? I sure don't care. Besides Episode III might reveal that.

EDIT: Durwood, that's correct, but Im not sure thats the whole reason... remember that Dooku, a separitist himself, is in league with the Fed.

Durwood, it seems to me that some people don't want to think that hard; they complain about Lucas being too simple but can't draw the lines from A to B for themselves.

Without Lucas, Spiderman and LOTR wouldn't have been able to exist...where do all movie makers go for their special effects? That's right ILM...George's baby.

Let him make things explode, and create thousands of men that aren't there...he's earned it.

I think there's a point to be made here about layers. The reason we disagree about whether serials are an influence, is the same reason why some people are disappointed with the effects in the PT, which is the same reason why some people think the story is lacking or two complicated.

That is, SW is deeply layered and it offers us what we want to take away from it. If you want an action movie it's there. If you want a science fiction movie it's there. If you want a special effects movie, ditto.

But you can't jump between layers and expect it to make sense. One comment on this thread surrounds why the separists want to separate - then the answer is too complicated or requires too much thought.

Frankly all the SW films provide a lot of entertainment even for those that do not follow the political twists and turns. But those who are following that part of the story will be able to make the connections.

And it's perfectly plain that people who were disappointed by some aspect of the films, placed a greater emphasis on one layer of the picture than those who were not disappointed. (if that makes sense - sorry I am struggling to explain this point)

I took my best friend to the theatre to see TPM. He is not a massive SW fan. When the film ended he stood up and said "I want to be a Jedi knight".

How on earth would someone work that out??! It's not even in the film! I could make any old reason up and say "it's not hard to figure out".
