RE: Serial movie making died long ago for a reason...............
Oh, of course pointing out the difference between the Republic and Queen Amidala is an excercise in hairsplitting. Obviously the difference is so small that it qualifies as picking at minutia.
Furthermore I question whether Nute Gunray felt he was poorly treated by the either Queen Amidala or the Republic court system. He had invaded the Queen's planet. Can you tell me how we expected to be treated by her when she returned? I also think that the fact that he invaded another planet yet got through the 10 trials without being prosecuted would be a cause for celebration on Nute's part.
Here is my theory, based on the films. Nute is a greedy creature, one who fears and respects the power of Darth Sidious. I think that Darth Sidious probably used his powers in the Senate to ensure that Nute Gunray kept his freedom and position. Nute owes him. The seperatist movement presents an opportunity for Nute to increase his power and wealth, as well as the tantalising prospect of revenging himself against Amidala. Furthermore he is now part of a larger alliance, increasing the chances of a successful conclusion.
What are the motives of the other seperatists? Hard to say. When people wish to leave a group it is usually caused by some dissatisfaction with the group, but I'm not convinced we've been shown enough evidence to draw a definite conclusion on this. Nor do I feel it necessary to draw a conclusion when there is a still one episode left to be filmed.
Please note: I acknowledge no mistakes in my spelling or grammar. Any mistakes you think you might see are a result of your need to split hairs and pick at minutia.

Having said that, Kasdan was, and still is, a great screenwriter, and not having him involved in the prequels is a shame.
Well, blame that on Kasdan. Lucas asked him to help write the scripts; Kasdan said Lucas should write them himself. He looked over the script for TPM and said it was fine.

Ah another lively debate
On the subject of the whole politics seen in TPM & AOTC, well Nute Gunray is used as one example of the Separatists.
All the groups seen as separatists in AOTC are just like the Trade Fedration, money makers.
In TPM, we heard of a taxation on trade routes in systems like Naboo. Now this taxation hurt the TF and they blockaded Naboo because of it, but this taxation also hurt those other money makers, the Commerce Guild, the Corporate Alliance etc etc.
It is safe to assume that after TPM and getting closer to AOTC, the Republic was being more and more unfavourable towards these money makers and organisations. So who comes along to promise these organisations what they want? Dooku. He says "Here you can have free trade routes, no taxes" and whatever else they want.
As for Nute Gunray, his reason for joining the Separatists is greed, a little revenge and power. Dooku promises him wealth and an end to a certain senator, and Gunray falls over himself to join.
The collective reason for a Separatist movement is the wanting of wealth and power. The Republic has cut into the profits of many organisations, and when Dooku comes along with his ideals and promises, well the organisations like the TF will join, not for the ideals but for the money.
Anyway I have to agree with Durwood, Pooja, ST and those that represent my views on Lucas' filmmaking.
Its amazing how brilliant Lucas work is to create such debates, not just on how he does and whether its good or bad, but on nearly every subject we have in this forum. Thats how powerful these films are, they generate so many questions and even vague answers. Which in the end go back to the viewer and its their interpretation of what he is presenting thats important. Yet some dont want to see their brain, prefer to be dumb and complain about things.
A little thought goes along way.

I got it from Kasdan himself, in an interview. I don't have the link, but he did say it...I think it was in SW Insider or in the LA Times.

Here are the choices:
Spider-Man
(I am so sick of the constant praise of this movie. I find it to be the most overrated movie since
Titanic
and
The Matrix
)
Jackass: The Movie
(
)
Panic Room
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
The Ring
Spirited Away
The Hours
The Pianist
Barbershop
Antwone Fisher
Monsoon Wedding
The Good Girl
About a Boy
Catch Me If You Can
The Quiet American
Y Tu Mamá También
Punch-Drunk Love
Bowling for Columbine
Talk to Her
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
Chicago
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Adaptation
Far from Heaven
About Schmidt
The fact that
Jacka$$
is even a choice boggles my mind. But besides AOTC being excluded from the list, I'm surprised that
Minority Report
,
Signs
,
Austin Powers in Goldmember
,
Die Another Day
, and
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
are not choices.
Meh.

The prequels mix old influences with the new. The old trilogy had three main influences: westerns, samurai films, and Flash Gordon serials. Han Solo was a classic gunslinger, while Luke and Leia were the equivalent of Flash Gordon and Dale Arden. In the prequels, Anakin and Padme take on those roles, while Obi-Wan Kenobi is based on the Toshiro Mifune character from numerous samurai films. The opening crawl is a Flash Gordon trademark as well. Lucas has now begun including some Dashiell Hammett. Obi-Wan's storyline is essentially that of a hard-boiled detective--which is fitting, since cowboys and samurai are cinmatically interchangeable, and the cowboy film was succeeded by the film noir.

I'm sorry to say but Signs and Minority Report was better than any movie on that list, except for The Two Towers.
And by the way, The Two Towers isn't exactly perfect either. Some of the scenes were extraordinarily bad, like the scene with all the Uruk-Hai talking about eating the hobbits, and the part where Aragorn is putting on all his armor before Helm's Deep. Not to mention it lacked the character development the first film had.
And also (by the way), the part in Spider-Man where the Goblin is kidnapping Aunt May and he tells her to finish the prayer... that has to be like the worst, most retarded scene I've ever seen in my life. Nothing in Episode II is nearly that bad.
Congradulations to whoever made that list.

old serials are still fun to watch, were all aimed at
kids but had underlying political/social commentary about red china, atomic powered weapons, corrupt governments, consequences of not dealing with organized crime which were all pertinent in the 30's & 40's.
GL used alot from Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, Universal Kingdom and other serials lifting directly them from the serials such as characters, dialog, prop design, music scoring ideas, and others. This is in both the OT & PT but more so in the PT.
GL orignally tried to get the rights to do Flash Gordon but couldn't so he made soemthing better...Star Wars.
When Star Wars(Ep IV) was being made he had scenes from films of old serials, kurosowa, the dam busters pasted together to get his visual point across for some of the scenes including musical score from Flash Gordon.
Source: SKYWALKING: The Life and Films of George Lucas by Dale Pllock, 1983
I am in the process of making, for kicks, a web page giving shot to shot comparisons of the the two.
I like Star Wars more but serials are still alot of fun to watch.
