LOL!
It was so good in fact, I copied and pasted it into my Quotes document I have. Yay!
Y'know, I'm getting this feeling I've been here before...
Anyway, I met MAS once! He signed my copy of "I, Jedi". 'Twas very cool. My friend Zach, who has almost every book MAS wrote, got them ALL signed. I wish I had more money so I could have done the same. Alas, my library card is the only access I have...which is pretty good...but I want to own the books dammit! And MAS lives in Arizona! Yay! Go AZ! 'Cause we AZ-ans practically have nothing here...except me... oh, and that big hole in the ground...

I didn't mean he misspelled, it's just that there are different ways of making a contraction (example: "I would not" can either be "I wouldn't" or "I'd not"), and he just seems to use the one that is a bit more rare than the other. I mean which would you usually use?
About the informal/formal thing, I dont know about it showing up in his other books since Ive only read his SW ones... I mostly saw it in his earlier X-wing novels. For example, in Rogue Squadron, when Nawara Ven is complaing about sharing a room with Bror Jace, he says:
"Since I will not be fighting with Jace for mirror space to preen, I think our conflicts will be minimal -- I shall take solace in that fact."
This just sounds a bit stiff to my ears, especially when talking in a group of friends about some jerk.
Another example is in Wedge's Gamble. His charater Zekka Thyne, is supposed to a common thug, right? 99% of his dialogue is written like that ("how long is this chummy cr@p going to last, anyway?"), but then, when he's threatening Corran with a blaster in the seamy bar he says, "Your thoughts parallel mine."
This is probably on the razor's edge of nit-picking, but it seems just a little to erudite for a thug.

Nawara Ven was a lawyer, so it seem natural for his dialogue to be be deliverd with an educated eloquence. You may have a point with Thyne, although I doubt that "99%" of his dialogue took a formal tone.

I meant 99% of Thyne's voice was informal and true to character.
Maybe it is just me, after all, but I still think his dialogue can seem just a bit off. Great writer, though.

My fault, I should have read more carefully. Anyways, I haven't read a Stackpole SW book since Ruin was released, but you probably do have a point about somewhat stiff dialogue. I finshed the DragonCrown War Cycle a while back, and if I recall correctly a lot of the characters in that work came across somewhat stiffly. Then again, the pages were filled with gruff elves and battle hardened commanders, and to me the story better resembled a fantasy more attuned to a military history/strategy book than a novel along the lines of Talion or the X-Wing series. Regardless, I'm still a big Stackpole fan eagerly awaiting the release of his next book, The Secret Atlas.

In case anyone is interested, an excerpt from A Secret Atlas is now available in the MMP version of Grand Crusade. From what I read, it looks pretty good. Not sure if its entirely human-based, because some other races are alluded to, but I'm not sure if they're a race of humans or not.
I'm hoping that after his Age of Discovery trilogy is done, Mike returns to the Dragoncrown world. There's so much potential: the next generation of Norringtons and Hawkinses, further adventures with Resolute/Dunardel, the Oromise, the Gyrkyme. Mike has a true, dare I say it, gem here.

I'd much rather see a sequel to Talion than a return to the DragonCrown world. I think Mike has said he has indeed pondered such a novel, and has somewhat of an outline completed for a sequel.
If he does go the way of DragonCrown again, then I'd really be interested in another first person book featuring Resolute set many years after the events of the other books.

Yeah, I would love to see a Talion sequel, that's my favorite MAS book, and probably top 20 from any author (and I've read alot).
By the way, he's got a decent essay on his site now about why he's voting Kerry on November 2nd. He's obviously not stupid about politics and he is making the right choice, but the only thing I didn't really like was when he was talking about the Latin American democracies and how the U.S. helped them achieve such results. That is just wrong. American influence in Latin American during teh 60s, 70s, and 80s caused thousands of deaths, and was geared towards only one thing: opening new markets for U.S. interests. I don't consider it a huge catastrophe that Stackpole doesn't know this, because it is almost never mentioned in the U.S. media, I just would have liked to be a little more impressed with him.

Well, it's time to list my Stackpole fandom.
My favourite Stackpole novel by far is Talion: Revenant. Characters are new, Nolan isn't a gary sue, and I like how it is written.
Next I would have DragonCrown War novels. They're pretty good. Does suffer from the Nolan-rehash a bit, but I'm able to like Tarrant, but I can't stand Will. However, I really enjoy the other characters, especially Resolute, Kerrigan, and Adrogans.(Favourite part of When Dragons Rage is the Adrogans
chapters.)
Sadly, his Star Wars novels doesn't do much for me anymore. X-Wing 1-4 is bareable, and I,Jedi is only slightly better. I hate Isard's Revenge though. Been a while since I read Onslaught and Ruin, but I remember liking them a lot more than his Bantam works. Also I can't stand Corran anymore.
However, I don't mind his short stories, Mara Jade, By the Emperor's Hand, and Union is one of my favourite SW comics. Haven't read any X-Wing comics, but I have no real desire to read them.
So I look forward to The Secrect Atlas and his regular works, but I have no real desire to see him write anymore Star Wars works.
