Hey! I just received "A Secret Atlas" in the mail today! Can't wait to tear into this one.
Has anyone else started/finished this yet? I know it came out last week.

Does anyone know anything about Michael A. Stackpole's collection Perchance to Dream and Other Stories? Coming April 15 from Five Star, this book collects 16 or 17 stories spanning Stackpole's twenty-year career; the official blurb is:A New York Times bestselling author of fantasy and science fiction novels, Michael A. Stackpole is well-known as the author of award-winning books and stories in gaming and media universes like Star Wars® and BattleTech®. His fantasy novels, especially those in his acclaimed DragonCrown War cycle, have made him an acknowledged master in that field. Perchance to Dream and Other Stories collects many of his short stories for the first time. The title story is drawn from the DragonCrown War and is seen for the first time here. The other stories run the gamut from fantasy to science fiction, humor to horror and even to poetry. The work collected here spans twenty years of writing and includes a little known story set in his Talion fantasy universe. I assume the Talion story is the one that is -- or used to be -- available on his website. Anyway, I haven't found any reviews of this book except by Harriet Klausner, and while I like Stackpole okay, I don't know if his short fiction interests me enough to invest $26 in a book from a publisher about the quality of whose work I know nothing. . .

I had not heard of this new Stackpole anthology until reading your post, but it is interesting. I would love to read a Dragoncrown War story!
As much as I loved the prequel and first two volumes of the DragonCrown War, I thought that 'The Grand Crusade' was a bit of a let down for the end of the saga. It seems very rushed to me, you know? I seem to remember reading on Stackpole's official site that he suffered an arm break or something that led to a kink in his schedule. Maybe he was under the gun on a deadline with that book. And maybe "A Secret Atlas" will be his magnum opus, you know what I mean?

I just finished the "Secret Atlas" and i thought it was really good. Unlike most quest novels, this seems to be more about the trip itself and the knowledge gained from intacting with new and different people then the search for some artifact. There are obvious parallels to the our own worlds history with cultures that seem to be modeled after the Aztecs, the scandanavians, and the orient. it was really excellent, i highly recommend it.

I picked up Stakpole's new collection. Once I've had the chance to read it, I'll post my thoughts.

Believe it or not ... but although I've been a big SW fan since 1977, and have been reading Stackpole's books ever since his first BattleTech novel ... I haven't read a single one of his SW novels.
I fell in love with Stackpole's work because of Battletech, read his Shadowrun stuff (held hope for a full novel for too long, untill FASA died), bought Eyes of Silver, Dark Glory War (and the rest of that saga), even got Gathering of ... (all three) - but never SW.
I did notice, however, that - after reading a number of Stackpole books, the same sort of characters and plots keep popping up ... so you can actually suffer from too much Stackpole.
I also agree that his earlier work was better (in my humble opinion at least) whereas the recent stuff is often overloaded with political plotting and too much battlestrategy (you almost need a 3D map to picture some of the larger battles).
All things considered, I only started reading EU after ROTS. Untill ROTS I felt only the movies were "real" SW. Now, with the movies "behind" us ... I guess I need more stories.
Yeah, I know what most of you will say. Get Stackpole's SW books (probably will).
And - in case you hadn't noticed yet: if I hadn't been a die-hard Stackpole fan, where else would I have gotten that username, heh ?
(maybe there's not that much difference between Vader and certain sullanciri - then again, I can't recall any sullanciri getting "redeemed").

Get his first four X-wing books. They're pretty much the best SW novels he's written. If you like them, try the others.

I think his "big announcement" was the launch of The SciFi Podcast Network back in late June.

"Want to know the reason behind Mike's first visit to TFN?"
I must have missed that in the podcast. What was the reason?
