I'm glad you've decided to give this all another chance!

I've been a fan of your tie-in work for many years now, begining with your Star Trek novels, Yesterday's Son, Time for Yesterday and Sarek. Looking on your site, I see I missed Sand and Stars! shock I will have to acquire that one immediately. I've always been so fond of your Vulcan works.

I really enjoyed your Han Solo trilogy. It had a different flare from Brian Daley's works, which I also love, and I personally thought that the Bria Tharen angle was a good way to keep Han ambivalent about the Rebellion as he was at least on the surface until Return of the Jedi. To me, it made it all the more clear that he mostly stuck around for Leia and Luke.

I wish LFL had let you have the Princess Leia project. I'm excited that there seems to be something in the works in reference to it, but I think us fans of the Princess have been patient long enough. No doubt the reason why we don't see more works focusing on female characters in Star Wars EU is publishers' perceptions of the target audience. I personally think they are wrong and I would like to see books with Leia as the main character... THE main character. And even one or two for Padme since she got such short shrift in Revenge of the Sith with some of her best bits landing on the cutting room floor. It severely damaged her character in the movie. The novelization was much better.

Just a quick note to warn you about Sand and Stars. It's NOT a new work, nor is it a collaboration by me and Diane Duane. Sand and Stars is a re-issue of Sarek and Spock's World under one cover.

Frankly, I think the packaging Pocket gave this project was very duplicitious, designed to give fans the idea it was a new book, and a Duane/Crispin collaboration. I was pretty annoyed when I saw that cover, but authors don't have much control over such things, especially when they're writing tie-ins.

I do have a new book out, however. Details and an excerpt on my website.

I actually do have a question along those lines...

I've seen that some agents won't take unsoliceted material (much like a publisher). The question I have is this: if someone DOES take unsolicted work, does that make them less reputable. How can an unpublished author become published if this is the case?

The last person I knew who went from a "writer" (as in, I write on my own dime) to a published author was Bob Truluck ("Street Level," fantastic book). He got published but submitting through a contest. In your professional opinion, is this a valid avenue?

Thanks for taking the time.

How do you get an agent? I've seen on a writer's list someone mention that you need to get an agent first, but how do you go about that? Thank you for your help.

For those of you who are interested in the topic of agents and getting an agent, I recommend that you go to Writer Beware's Blog and read it. Also read the archives. There are topics there on query letter writing, synopsis writing, copyright, how to analyze an agent's track record, how to evaluate an agent's site, etc.

Here's Writer Beware's 20 Worst Agents List. (Avoid these guys!)

WRITER BEWARE'S 20 WORST AGENCIES LIST

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Below (in alphabetical order by last name) is a list of the 20 literary agencies about which Writer Beware has received the greatest number of advisories/complaints over the past several years.

None of these agencies has a significant track record of sales to commercial (advance-paying) publishers, and most have virtually no documented and verified sales at all (book placements claimed by some of these agencies turn out to be "sales" to vanity publishers). All charge clients before a sale is made--whether directly, by levying fees such as reading or administrative fees, or indirectly, for editing or other adjunct services.

Writer Beware recommends that writers avoid questionable literary agencies, and instead query agencies that have verifiable track records of sales to commercial publishing houses.

While the 20 agencies listed here account for the bulk of the complaints we receive, they're just the tip of the iceberg. Writer Beware has files on nearly 400 questionable agencies, and we learn about a new one every few weeks.

The Abacus Group Literary Agency
Allred and Allred Literary Agents (refers clients to "book doctor" Victor West of Pacific Literary Services)
Barbara Bauer Literary Agency
Benedict Associates (also d/b/a B.A. Literary Agency)
Sherwood Broome, Inc.
Capital Literary Agency (formerly American Literary Agents of Washington, Inc.)
Desert Rose Literary Agency
Arthur Fleming Associates
Finesse Literary Agency (Karen Carr)
Brock Gannon Literary Agency
Harris Literary Agency
The Literary Agency Group, which includes the following:
-Children's Literary Agency
-Christian Literary Agency
-New York Literary Agency
-Poets Literary Agency
-The Screenplay Agency
-Stylus Literary Agency (formerly ST Literary Agency, formerly Sydra-Techniques)
-Writers Literary & Publishing Services Company (the editing arm of the above-mentioned agencies)
Martin-McLean Literary Associates
Mocknick Productions Literary Agency, Inc.
B.K. Nelson, Inc.
The Robins Agency (Cris Robins)
Michele Rooney Literary Agency (also d/b/a Creative Literary Agency, Simply Nonfiction, and Michele Glance Rooney Literary Agency)
Southeast Literary Agency
Mark Sullivan Associates
West Coast Literary Associates (also d/b/a California Literary Services)

Once you've gotten some background on the subject of agents by reading up on the blog, I'm open for questions.

As for referrals, most agents like to have them, but it's not a "must." If your query letter is good enough, they'll ask to see your work.

Hey Ann,

I was just curious as to why your pen name is A.C. Crispin. I've heard of other female authors such as Harper Lee and S.E. Hinton who had to adopt more "gender neutral" names at their publisher’s insistence. Was going by the pen name A.C. Crispin your choice, or the choice of your first publisher? Also, thanks for the information on agencies!

Have you ever heard of something called the Hollywood Book Festival? I've gotten a number of e-mails from them and they solicit writings of various types and give out awards. A fee is charged to enter. I thought the price ($75.00 if I remember) seemed a bit high and wondered if they were legit or something that fan ficcers should be wary of.

Dear Mariah:

A fee of $75.00 sounds too steep to me, too. I'd avoid it.

I can understand a reasonable fee for a recognized writing contest so they can photocopy the submissions for the judges, but 75 bucks is way too much.

It should be like 20 or 25 to handle that.

Folks, I'll be on vacation for much of August, then at Dragoncon. (I will be hanging around some at the Matters of the Force room, by the way.)

If anyone's attending Dragoncon, come up and say hi.

Best,

-Ann C. Crispin

The mods have told me this topic has been re-opened and is ready for posts. I'll try to come by at least once a week and check it, to see if there is any commentary or if anyone has questions.

Since my Star Wars books are so old by now, I'd be happy to discuss other topics in here, such as writing, avoiding writing scams, writing organizations, submitting work to publishing houses, etc., if that would be of use to anyone.

Thanks for stopping by.

Any info on submitting work to publishing houses, and etc. would be great.

Can you be more specific as to what you want to know? That's a huge topic. For starters, get a book called Writers Market, or sign on to www.writersmarket.com

It will cost you like 30 bucks for a year, but it's searchable and has submissions guidelines for many many publishers, both large houses and small presses.

I actually just passed that book at Borders yesterday (and now just read your post.)

So you'd highly recommend it?

Is there any other writing to get published books you'd recommend?
