If I recall correctly, always a dubious assumption, Jan and I were working on the final arc at the same time we were putting together the outline for Legacy. What looks like pre-planning often is, I confess, simply weaving in threads from past work. The shot of Mace and the others, however, was calculated. We knew about the scene from the final film and thought it would be cool to see just how POWERFUL these guys were together BEFORE they marched into Palpatine's office. It makes Sidious' take-down of them more impressive if we know they are badass from before that.

Returning to LEGACY -- one of the things to keep in mind is that new projects for Sw often have teams of designers and developers working for a long time. Jan -- who did the BULK of the design work -- had a few months AND was drawing her final arc for SW republic at the same time. That's pretty durned impressive, in my book.

I think it's awesome that you and Jan knew about the Mace & Co. versus Palpatine scene beforehand, and that you thought to do that moment in the "Show of Force" because of it. How far ahead of the movie's release was that sort of stuff revealed to you?

And, going back to Attack of the Clones, when did you find out that Aayla would appear -- assuming it was before you saw her onscreen -- and what was it like? It must have been a great feeling to have a character you co-created immortalized in the movies.

Generally, we're working about 4-6 months on a given issue in advance of its on sale date, so you can figure from there. It all starts to merge into a murky "back then" in my head.<g>

aayla was really added towards the last moment in AotC. What was a hoot that the TIME article on the movie had a picture of her in the article. That's when I first glimpsed her outside of the comic. Seeing her in the movie was surreal. You start with a character in your head that goes on to appear on the page and then on the screen? As that great actor, Keanu Reeves, has often said, "Whoa!"

Mr. Ostrander, how to you feel about the apparent changes to the Clone Wars continuity to give the TV show more room to work? I know put in many years shaping this era and IMO did a damn fine job of it, so what is your opinion on the current outlook? Sorry if this has been asked before or if you aren't in a position to discuss it.

I think that SW is GL's sandbox in which I get to play. His sandbox, his rules, and if he wants to change 'em, so be it. My stories can still be read in tpb.

John:

One common thing that I have read about from authors is that the series they create can be fluid in ways they did not anticipate up front. Out of curiosity, have there been some ideas for the plot/storyline/characters of Legacy that you and Jan have tossed out as the series developed?

Secondly, who are your top three favorite characters in the series?

Thanks!

I don't know as we tossed any out but some have developed almost on their own. Admiral Stazi is a good example. He was meant for the one issue but became such a strong presence that he came back and has really commanded stories for himself. On the other end of the line, Naxy Screeger was supposed to be a throw-away character but he keeps worming his way back in. There should be an organic progression in the stories. We know where we;re going but twists come up that surprise Jan and me as well.

I can't name my three FAVORITE characters. It's like asking a parent which of their children they like best. I will,, IMO however, give you some unexpected names that are or have developed very strong. Gar Stazi is one. Ganner Krieg is developing now very fast. Naxy, as i indicated, is just fun to write any time he shows up. Nyna Calixte/Morrigan Corde has to be one the most interesting characters in the whole series. Plus all the usual suspects.

Interesting stuff! In regards to Ganner Krieg, I was actually thinking the other day that he tends to come across as a much more level headed Imperial Knight than Antares Draco. In fact, for me personally Ganner is one of the most interesting IK's as well. Of course, the best Imperial Knight you have developed so far, IMO, is Treis Sinde. His ability to see the bigger picture and look past prejudices makes him a standout among the IK.

Of course, the fact he stayed behind to aid the Mon Cal resistance earned him alot of points in my book. That last panel of him shaking hands with the Mon Cal in a GA pilots uniform was pure awesome. Plus a sign that more hopeful things are to come.

Speaking of characters, Jhorman Bey is great example of a sterotype breaker. Taking a species like the Weequay, who normally get a bad rap, and making one of their own Rogue Leader was suprising and refreshing. In fact, including both a Weequay commander and a Dug pilot into the Rogues really turned alot of heads.

In a good way. happy

Just recently got into the Legacy series, and was surprised at how much I liked it. I buy a lot of comics, but never got into the SW ones for some reason.

After much debate with the guy who recommends me stuff at the comic shop, I picked up Legacy: Broken....and the next week I went back and bought Shards and Claws of the Dragon.

Now one of my most anticipated comics is the Legacy series, love the story and the art. Good stuff.

Question: Are you a fan of any other comics? And if so what are they? I ask only because I was wondering what comics (and/or books & writers) inspire you.

My personal favs at the moment are Legacy (obvious since I just said that tongue ), Thunderbolts (Warren Ellis is the man), and Thor (Who doesn't love Thor?)

Damn, Claws of the Dragon was absolutely mindblowingly awesome. How do you guys manage to repeatedly top yourselves? I seriously finished the last page and sat, smiling and all, on my bed for ten minutes thinking how impossible it will be for you guys to top this arc, knowing full well you will. I loved the recent novels and other comics and I'm sure I'll love the Clone Wars movie/show, but Legacy IS Star Wars for me at this point. In fact, it is becoming increasingly clear that Legacy will end up being the premier EU story when it concludes (which better be a very, very, long time from now angry tongue ).

Gushing aside, can you divulge how much of Legacy's future is planned? How far ahead do you outline?

So I have a question about Nat Skywalker.

Is he sterile?

Seriously, he obviously loves his kids...why doesn't he have any of his own. Droo obviously has the ability to have children.

Or does he just not want to pass on the Skywalker gene?

Hey Mr. Ostrander. I was wondering, in Trust Issues part one, is it Darth Kruhl that appears in Maladi's lab?

John,

From what I've read online about Legacy 26 (I have not been able to get my hands on it yet), Tobias Sun does not make an appearance. I was hoping that he would accompany Cade on the Krayt assassination mission, but that doesnt seem to be happening.

I was wondering if he will be in any later issues of Legacy.

Thanks!
