Another question about the NEGTC Mr. Wallace.
I really got a kick out of the Pellaeon entry, with the whole "good bad guy" thing about how he could have joined the Rebellion. Was this your own feelings on the matter, or just a filler?

Thanks for noticing that--that's an entry where I dipped into a bit of philosophizing beyond the basic biographical details. I also did that with Fey'lya, but from the opposite direction. Everyone hates Fey'lya and everyone loves Pellaeon, but I think there's a lot of gray in both characters. I love Fey'lya and Pellaeon. But as an Imperial officer for four decades, Pellaeon must have stood by while a lot of atrocities were committed on his watch.

Ah, cool. Well it seems while flipping through your work I have found yet another question.

In the NEGTC, you give no refrences to GB. Is there a reason for this? Did it come out after the book was already done? Thanks happy

By GB do you mean Galactic Battlegrounds? If so I was unable to incorporate any info from that project by the time I had to submit my final draft. It's a cool game, though, even if I've been playing it for six months without finishing it yet. For sure, expect to see some refs to it in my next project.

:::shudder::: The Yavin Vasillika... don't even get me started on that one. angry devil

Anyway... with Gamber on hiatus, what is your next project? While I love stories that showcase familiar characters, it's also nice to see new characters pop up in RPG material (don't play, but the stories are good happy ) and I wondered is there any hope for more? From you or any of the other people who supplied stories?

I really hope so. grin

Mr. Wallace, did you do the write up on the mid rim incursions by Pellaeon? I found them very interesting and would love to see more information about them in the future.

Well, the latest news on the Official Site is that the Insider will be the new home of original SW fiction. So if they'll take it, I hope to do more fiction work for them down the road.

The story of Pelleaon and his battles in the Mid-Rim originally came from the Essential Chronology, and was created by Kevin and I to account for some down-time in Pellaeon's bio (and to account for the shifting shape of the Empire's borders between various books). If you're interested, by all means check out the EC -- it goes into more detail than the NEGC. But so far, those battles have not been chronicled in either comic or novel form.

Mr. Wallace, I was really impressed with the work that went into the New Essential Guide to Characters. This book is really helpful and easily tops all of the other Essential Guides, in my opinion. There's something I've been wondering though. What was the most difficult entry for you to write, and why?

Hi Mr. Wallace, I would also like to tell you that you did a great job on the New Essential Guide, hopefully I'll be able to buy it nest week, when my $$$ flow problems are rectified grin .

Anyways, from what I've read from the NEGtC in the bookstore and from people on the boards, is that Ranik Solusar was a very independent Jedi, specifically because he married, and then fathered Kam. I was thinking about this, and what would the possibility be that Ranik was a Padawan of Count Dooku, which might account for this independent streak. I think in Dooku's Visual Dictionary entry, it says that Dooku tended to transfer his own independence streak to his pupils and then uses Qui-Gon's independence as an example of such. Just wondering if you thought it was possible continunity wise, and if you think LFL would approve something like it.

Dan i was wondering if there were originally plans to put Calista into TNEGTC in the short bios to explain or shed light on what shes doing? And theres one i dont understand about Thrawn and the whole Outbound Flight Project story, how were Thrawn and his Chiss officers and men able to talk with Kinman Doriana after they captured him and his men? i mean theres no evidence of a protocol droid being with kinmans group and there are no Universal Translaters in Star Wars so i have no idea how the chiss were able to talk to him without any knowledge or understanding of Basic, just a thought, but i was wondering if you might know?

Mateo, if I may be able to express my thoughts on that matter.

For one I don't see why a protical droid would not bo on the ship captured, it seems resanable to me. Second, information is largly associated with the chiss. Their is a chance, however slim, that Thrawn already knew basic at the time. And lastly, it could of taken several days for the two to communicate, but like in all history it can be done through gestures, etc...

Hi everyone, please forgive my delay in getting to these responses. I've largely been absent from these boards for the past few weeks while I pushed a few pieces in under a deadline.

Nichos_Marr wrote:

The most difficult entries were probably the ones where I had to track down a lot of history and then decide which pieces went where. Like Boba Fett, for instance. He's been in dozens of novels, comics, and computer games, not all of which were planned to work in concert with the others, and deciding which stories happened before or after the others (and trying to create some logical story-links between them) was difficult but ultimately satisfying. I thought Mara Jade was tricky for the same reasons.

That's an interesting thought! As you can probably tell I was trying to rectify some of the "old" Jedi teachings as seen in earlier novels & comics with what we know of the Jedi Code in TPM and AOTC. The trouble spots included:
1) Master Arca's three simultaneous Padawans (Tales of the Jedi)
2) Callista's age when she was taken as an apprentice (Children of the Jedi)
3) Corran Horn's Jedi grandfather marrying and having children (I, Jedi)
4) Ranik Solusar marrying and fathering Kam (Dark Empire II)
These are all pretty easy fixes, really, considering that the Jedi Order can't possibly be 100% homogenous and that it would undoubtedly have changed over time. I didn't get into too many details regarding Ranik, but your thought on Dooku is an interesting one. How old was Dooku during AOTC, anyway? I suppose we'd have to plot out his age, account for the time he was training Qui-Gon, and see if there's a window in there. As far as I know no one is currently developing this idea, but I think it's a cool one.

Callista has her own entry, so I'm assuming you mean that you were interested in info on what Callista is doing now, during the NJO era? I purposely left that vague, figuring that if Callista was ever to return it would be best to let the writer tell that tale in full story form (i.e. a novel or comic) instead of in a capsule bio.

There's no evidence that there was a protocol droid with Kinman's group, but there's no evidence that there wasn't one, either. I figure they had a protocol droid aboard (or maybe some portable piece of hardware with the relevant parts of a protocol brain wired into it--this would essentially be the same as Trek's "universal translator") and that it was able to figure out the Chiss language within an hour, but until that tale is fully told all I can do is speculate.

Thanks for the questions!

Dan

Hello again Mr. Wallace!

I have yet another question, this time dealing with yor short story, The Monster

Where you set on using Pastage as Palpitines aid from the beginning? Why did you choose him over the other men who pioneered the Empire?

Thanks so much!

What other Imperial pioneers did you have in mind? (Actually I briefly considered using Kinman Doriana, but assumed that Tim Zahn might want to use that character in a different capacity some day.) Pestage is one of the few Imps that we know has been around for a while, and I thought it was great fun to portray him as young, vital, and dangerous.
