hi jan
Tom AKA Villiemace here
I have just picked up issue 3 or rite of passage and was once again very impressed by it. I find it ver funny how Quinlan and AAyla are on a ver serious mission whereas Villie is being ver casual and laidback about everything. An example of this is that when you see quin and aayla at the end of the issue they are about to fight tsyr whereas the last thing villie says when you see him is that he intends to go off and get drunk and then find a twilek girl to chat up and spend the night with. Typical of villie!
I miss Dooku in this issue but I suppose he has got to carry on with his mission of getting systems to join the seperatists.
Looking forward very much to issue 4
Keep up the good work
All the best
Tom

Hi Jan,
I read that there are plans for an Darth Maul issue in Tales. If Dark Horse greenlights the project as a "go" I'm all for it!
Do you think they'll ever approve of an all-Aayla issue? A Tales would be okay as warm-up but a full-on book would be a-okay! I guess a reality of one is like DC Comics doing an "Enterprise" book, huh?
Do you have any Aayla customs in your collection?

Hi all--been a while since I've been here--I'll try to get to all the questions in the next day or two!
HI VILLIEMACE! (Tom)--
I had heard that Villie appeared in GBG--haven't seen the game or Villie in the game sorry to say--and I really want to!
1. How old is Villie? If he is in empire than he must be fairly old, although I have never given serious thought to a devaronian's life span so who knows.
I don't know for sure. I've always thought of Villie as having been around long enough to have a rep, but not long enough to get himself killed for it. I guess that would make him a youngish Devaronian--though I think he is older than Quin (who is about the same age as Obi-Wan). Always figured that Devaronians are longer lived than humans, but not as long lived as Wookies. Not sure if the lifespan of a Devaronian male has been established anywhere? I figure Villie's philosophy is--live fast, run faster and try not to die...
2. At the end of Twilight you see Darth Sidious pondering over how he nearly turned Quinlan Vos into a Dark Jedi. Was he the one ultimately responsible for Quinlan's mind wipe?
Darth Sidious could have been ultimately responsible. He seems to have had a hand in the glitteryll gambit which was unsuccessful thanks to Quinlan Vos' and Mace Windu's intervention. Alright--Villie helped as well at the end, but was certainly had a hand in messing up Quin's mind in the first place. I'd still like to draw the story about how it really all came down--right down to what Quin and Aayla were doing on Tatooine...
HI GATHERER!--
>>Would you consider the planning of the Clone War comic series (Republic) to be similar in scope and forethought as the New Jedi Order series of books?<<
There is an overall plan for the first year, but allowences have to be made for what happens in Episode III--so it probably is not planned out as far ahead as NJO could conceivably be.
HI WEDGE88!--
>>Villie in Empire! Haha. I wonder how Darth Vader would react to him. Anakin won't meet him in Republic, will he?!<<
You never know...it would be cool, wouldn't it? I'd like to see it--in Republic and Empire!
HI SKETKH!--
>>I was curious if you guys at Darkhorse have ever considered a "new Jedi Order" monthly series. Or at least something that preceeds the into the New Republic. I like Star wars as much as everyone, but I would like to see where everything is going beyoned the era of Skywalker. <<
LOTS of Star Wars fans have asked about this at every panel I've been on with Dark Horse. So why doesn't it happen? Maybe DH doesn't want to duplicate what is already being done in the novels?
HI KAMPILAN! (Wil)!--
Great meeting you and you pal in San Diego too! (I really thought you were brothers--honestly! I've got a friend like that as well--they always think we are sisters and that she is older than me--which annoys her because she is younger...heh.) Great you got to go to the beach--despite my plans, I never made it there--I am a slave to the drawing board, but I had great fun there meeting and talking to everyone. It's the only time in the year I get to see everyone at LFL and Dark Horse as well and get to catch up on stuff!
>>Oh, don't worry about the A'Sharad Hett sketch...we'll see him in the Clone Wars, right?<<
I believe there are plans for A'Sharad in Republic! Stay tuned!
Best--Jan

Here's more!
Hi EPISODENONE--
>>just wondrin' -- which came first?
mandrake/ostrander or duursema/mandrake?
who introduced who to who??<<
Mandrake and I met at the Joe Kubert School. Tom and I met Ostrander through a mutal friend, Tim Truman, when Tim and John were working on Grim Jack. So Duursema/Mandrake was there first!
Hi ANOTHERAGENTSMITH!
<<The Cover image for the new 'Rite of Passage 3' issue is up at Dark Horse>>
Thanks for the compliments on the cover! Just so you know--that cover was painted by Dave McCaig over my pencils. I think he did fantastic work on it! (Wait'll you see the cover for 45! (also painted by Dave. It's one of my favorites!)
Hi SARLAAC!
Thanks for all the compliments on my work! I am really happy that you are enjoying the books so much--and I am thrilled you like Aayla and Quin too!! In case you hadn't heard, they will be in issue 49 of Republic to kick off the start of the Clone Wars issues! After that--we will see...I don't want to give away 49.
>>Oh, and Jan, there is a website devoted to Lightsabers, it is called Luukesabers, its address is:
www.TheLightsaber.com
it features a Quinlan Vos lightsaber and several lightsabers of the jedi, I am happy to say that with the help of the Host of the Website, Luuke I created a Quinlan Vos lightsaber, you can view on the site above in the lightsaber histories on page three, please if you view it can you tell me if it is right and accurate to how you imagine it ???<<
WOW! The sabers are incredible! I was absolutely blown away by this site and the sabers--especially seeing that you had actually built Quin's saber!!! This is awesome! I can't believe such a great site for sabers exists and I can't rightly express my complete enthusiasm in words!
I had Quin's saber custom built by Park's Sabers (since I have not the technolgical skill for such things.) (it is beautiful too!) I would really like to build my own version someday...
Your version of Quin's lightsaber(s) is incredible! Absolutely COOL! It is accurate and looks well balanced though I'd have to hold it to tell. Is it? I really like the cap on the end of it--perfect! Great work--I will be back to visit this site regularly if I have any questions about the details of a Jedi's saber. What really impressed me too was that there was a drawing of Mighella's weapon from Darth Maul! Incredible!
--Detail is important to me and I try to draw my sabers with as much accuracy as I can--it is really important to me to make them right for each Jedi.
Thanks for such a cool site!
again, WOW!
--Jan

Hi bulent_hasan!
>>Rites of passage 1 & 2 rock. I also got a chance to see what you actually look like in some magazine called Sketch (or something like that). Here's something I noticed; your characters have some of your facial characteristics. I've noticed that in many artists, John Romita Jr. is a large bulkly man (yet short) which is why his characters have such 'mass' to them, Jim Lee has very sharp facial features, etc. I've noticed that Quin, Aayla, Tholme, etc., have some distinct facial features that you do. Do you do this on purpose or is this some kind of sub-conscience way of trying to emulate your characters? Or do you just draw that way?<<
Interesting observation--and something I have noticed in artist's work as well.
I don't consciously draw any of my own features into my characters--that is I don't say well, now I'll give such and such a character my eyes, nose, mouth etc-- Most of my character work is derived through observation of faces and most of the characters are usually an amalgam of a bunch of those faces (with the exception of Aayla--who is referenced directly from Amy Allen!) though it may be something that happens on a sub-conscious level somehow.
It's strange, because sometimes after drawing a character for a long time, I suddenly realize that subconciously I have been tapping into the remembrance of a face I saw a long time ago in a movie, or a face of a teacher or friend. Had that experience the other day in fact--I saw a picture of an old teacher and realized I'd tapped into his features for Tholme! Weird!
I guess the rest of it happens on an unconscious level for better or worse...Maybe it's like writing what you know--drawing what you see the most...though I don't think I look a thing like Darth Maul...ok, a little in the bloodshot eyes at the moment, but that's it!

Hi Jan! Great to see you. Hope all is well.
Thanks for posting and mostly thanks for the awesome 'Rite of Passage 3' issue!
The cover of the anticipated 'Rite of Passage 4' is up at Dark Horse:
If that is the cover you mean Jan it is indeed awesome. (Though a bit sad Aayla isn't on it. )
It does convey a tremendous sense of action and looks as epic as the battle seen between Obi-Wan and Darth Maul in Episode I. (The background has some similarities.) Also the emotion on the faces of Quinlan and Tsyr is awesome, it's reall palpable. The more darker sensations Quinlan seems to have as he fights (as we saw in 'Rite of Passage 1') but the anger and hate in Tsyr's face and eyes rae truly amazing, he scares me!
I do like Tholme's appearance, his facial traits really convey a sense of wisdom and he looks like a 'teacher'. Though he does still have that 'sharp edge' about him that shows he is ready for action when the need arises.
A question about the coloring/inking ... sorry if it is a silly one. (I just don't know anything about actually making comics.)
When you say "that cover was painted by Dave McCaig over my pencils" does that mean they literally paint over your original b&w pencil work?
If they do isn't it sad such great original work gets painted over? Or do they paint over some form of copy?
(No offense, but is the coloring in any way done digitally? Say by scanning in the original pencils digitally and then coloring them by coimputer? Which would enable to forever preserve the original b&w pencils.) Or is any digital/computer involvement more of a breakdown against the artists and their skills? I mean no offense, I see a computer as a tool, much like any other so hence.)

Being a little slow, I've just picked Rite of Passage 2, and it was fantastic. The scenes inside the nightclub, or the cantina or whatever you wanna call it - it was awesome! Also, when Aayla and Quin is on the ship, discussing how Aayla feels "unsure" of Quinlan now, I just adore the way you have him sit - with his knees to his chin like that. I've seen it in the other comics, and it's...well, it just seems very, very right and in character. I don't think I'm explaining this well...
Besides, had this friend of min pick up all the Quinlan comics (she really liked Jix, another one of Dark Horse's Star Wars characters, so I thought she'd like Quin too) and she read them, then she suddenly sort of cried out "what's this! It's all wrong!" That was when she picked up Infinity's End, and didn't much care for the art...So, I think you got one more fan there.

Hi Jan,
Yes, great that you and Tom had a good time in San Diego too! Yeah my buddy, Boyd, was the NHS valedictorian at our high school so it ain't no surprise he's working for "uncle' Bill at MS! The beach was a change in scenery to the downtown buildings...downtown looks like Downtown Anywhere,USA!
Thanks for mentioning that A'Sharad will be in Republic... maybe if I save enough money and bring more interested friends, I'd come in an A'Sharad Hett costume in 2005! Nah, I'll just wear an airbrushed shirt or something instead!
AnotherAgentSmith---thanks for the cover link. The rough thumbnails is in the latest Sketch magazine (jan's interview) and its cool to see it in living color. Yeah, where is Aayla? Oh, she's probably rescueing Tholme and Nat but...still!

Hi Smitty!
The covers are painted digitally over my scanned pencils by Dave McCaig. It's essentially colored the same way that the rest of the book is colored, but full painted with no ink line to 'hold' the color.
The computer is a great tool--very much like paint. I do miss the smell of the paint and the messy hands though.
Tholme...wait'll you see issue 49!
Hi Queengoddess!
Great to hear from you! Glad you liked RoP 2. I think the Casino scene on Ord mantell was was of my favorite scenes in the series! Brad really colored up the background very 'Vegas'!!
Thanks for the kudos on Quin's 'attitude'. I try to give each character their own body language. Quin's attitude is interesting to work with. Even when he's relaxed he is tense. Villie is fun as well--he always sprawls with his big boots up on something, knowing he's too cool for the room.
Very cool that your friend liked Quinlan... After all, he's one of my favorite Jedi! Say hi and thanks for reading the books to her for me!
Wil!
Sure...you and AAgentSmith believe what you want--yeah, Aayla is rescuing Tholme and Nat...just left poor Quin to fend for himself against those nasty Morgukai...that's just what Aayla would do...

Hi Jan, thanks for replying and the info, I appreciate it.
(Must be some awesome scanners and computers they use, not to mention the software. I imagine it's a great but challenging job though. The nice thing must be that the originals can be preserved, it'd be a shame if they got lost or painted over.)
"Sure...you and AAgentSmith believe what you want--yeah, Aayla is rescuing Tholme and Nat...just left poor Quin to fend for himself against those nasty Morgukai...that's just what Aayla would do..."
Mhhh ... why do I have the feeling you and John are up to something? I guess you'll have some great and surprising things in store for us with 'Rite of Passage 4'.
"Those" Morgukai, that's plural, though I thought Bok had perished and we only see Tsyr in the final shot of 'Rite of Passage 3'. Perhaps Bok survived and he takes on Aayla, as payback for his humiliating defeat at the fire river? (He'd go down again if he'd engage Aayla I bet.)
Besides Quin's a big boy, he can take care of himself. But I know Aayla wouldn't leave him, but she also would do her duty ... what a paradox.
I do wonder how his revelation of Aayla's greater Force power/potential will work out in 'Rite of Passage 4' ... I feel many a surprising and great scenes and story arcs coming on.
Another awesome page turner I bet.

Hi Jan,
If Bok somehow survived his plunge then I agree with Smitty(sorry AnotherAgentSmith!)that he and Aayla finishing their fight would be cool. Something happens that splits Aayla from Quin...can't wait!
Yeah that would be pretty funny if Aayla just ditched Quin to rescue Nat and Tholme!

Hallo, Hitman!
Wie ghehts? Your English is fine, mine Deutsch ist sehr...'rusty'...
Didn't mean to overlook your post--I was kind of working backward with the intent of working forward again--so here I am!
Thanks so much for your good words on Darkness and Rite of Passage! (Did you read Twilight?--that was our introduction to Quinlan, Aayla and Villie) It's awesome that you took the time and effort to order it now instead of waiting until 2003 when it is put into Trade Paperback. To me THAT is the finest compliment to the John's and my work on the book!
If you like the characters you can see some of them again in issue 49 (December 2002)which is a single issue story.
Will I ever go to a convention in Germany? I don't know. I guess it would depend on--1)being invited to attend and 2)finding the time in my work schedule to attend!
I know that I'd like to--Germany is a beautiful country and being part German I've always wanted to see it.. So I guess my answer is --hopefully, someday!
Thanks for writing!

Hey Villiemace!
>>An idea that could be quite cool and a nod to the fans of Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing such as myself would be if you and Jan had a story in which Dooku and Tarkin appeared together. It would be very cool.<<
That would be very cool. I don't know how they would meet, but I for one would love to see it!
About Quinlan Vos--
>>Although I am not sure that the current schedule for the star wars comics being released in the future would allow it, I would be interested to see what quinlan vos was like as a jedi before he lost his memory. How much of a change has his character undergone since loosing his memory?<<
This would be interesting to me as well and something John O and I have 'supposed' on from time to time. We got a slight glimpse into what Quin was like before his memory wipe in 'Heart of Fire'--the 3 part Dark Horse Extra that will hopefully be reprinted someday. Also in the first 9 pages of RoP. Well, I guess that's a younger Quin--not the Jedi Knight and teacher Quin.
My take on pre-memory wipe Quin? Essentially--even before his memories were taken away he was always slightly dark--serious, driven, a bit edgy, a bit of a troublemaker (I think Tholme covered for him on occasion, hoping he would do better--and usually he did.) But I think before the memory wipe he was in better control of his emotions and more in the light side of the Force--he had to be for Aayla to turn out as well as she did--and I think he was a good teacher--coming by knowledge as one who had made a LOT of mistakes. Also, as Mace states in Emmissaries-- Quin was a good man and trusted Jedi knight.
Don't know if there will be any stories that explore Quin's past (as fun as they would be.) Depends if there is a demand, I'd guess!
