	Title: Rightful Owner Author:Gkilkenny Timeframe: JA Characters: Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon Genre: Obi-Angst PG Summary:Obi-Wan is Qui-Gon’s Padawan, but in name only. One incident after another turn’s him into a tense disillusioned boy, until he can stand it no more. Notes: The characters from Star Wars sadly do not belong to me and I am just letting them wander around my story for fun. I promise to put them back. The sound of Qui-Gon’s voice was grating at his nerves, It was only mid morning, and yet Obi Wan had been disciplined twice already today. The first apparent transgression for the day was early this morning. Because Obi-wan was not an early riser, he found it difficult to get out of bed, but Qui-Gon’s idea of rising was to get up at 4.30am, a good hour before the rest of the Temple stirred. It was still dark at this time and Obi-wan had been studying quite late the previous night because he wanted to make his master proud by passing the Astrophysics test. He had studied hard and every chance he got he would find a quiet corner and study some more. Obi-Wan was quite confident that he knew enough to pass. But just passing was not going to make Qui-Gon proud of him, so he went over and over his notes until he knew everything inside out and back to front. But no matter how good he was or how much he studied, he would do something to make his Master unhappy. It was becoming a regular event. It seemed to take place every day. Obi-Wan wondered if berating him just came natural to Qui-Gon or did he have to work at it. He stood straight and silent in front of his master listening to the list of extra duties he was being given, for his latest infraction. His Master insisted that a Good Padawan was one that obeyed without question, didn’t laugh, didn’t talk to his friends, wasn’t late by even one second, ate in silence and spoke only when spoken too. Obi-Wan sighed to him self thinking (I suppose I am exaggerating just a bit, I am allowed to laugh and talk to my friends, when Master is not around). This latest infraction was caused by a study session with Bant. Bant had come over to study for the astrophysics exam. Qui-Gon had allowed her to come over for two hours of study with Obi on the proviso that they do it quietly. Obi-wan loved Bants company, she would make him feel good, and she would talk to him about silly stuff and they would laugh and he felt very comfortable in her presence. They had finished studying and Bant was getting ready to leave, she was telling Obi about a Master who had been showing an interest in her, and she was excited about becoming a Padawan. “Obi I just cannot believe I may become a Padawan soon” she giggled excitedly. “I am so glad I studied with you because I don’t think I would be able to concentrate on lessons if I had to study by my self” She admitted. “Bant I am really glad for you, I hope being an apprentice is everything you hope it will be” Obi said softly knowing his Master would not be happy about her raised voice. But he couldn’t spoil her excitement by telling her to be quiet; he could tell she was bubbling with anticipation. Obi-Wan knew that it was too late to try and keep her quiet; he would just take the punishment once she had gone. “Being a Padawan has changed you too Obi, you’re so controlled now, no more mucking around, I mean you know when to have fun and when to concentrate, I wish I could concentrate on my studies like you do” She was sparkling as they entered the common room, she was laughing and Obi couldn’t help but smile at her excitement. She stood at the door and Obi-Wan hoped she would just leave quietly. It wasn’t that he didn’t want her to be happy; it was just that he had promised his Master they would be quiet. But in a loud voice she looked past Obi-wan and said “Goodbye Master Jinn, thank you for allowing me to study with Obi” Qui-Gon was drawn away from whatever he was doing, Obi-Wan sensed the rising irritation coming from his Master as he turned and acknowledged Bant. “Wow look at the time, it is nearly mid day. Oh by the way, are you coming to the picnic lunch in the gardens, every one’s going, I am going, your coming too aren’t you?” she chattered on as he walked her out the door. Obi-Wan paused to look over at his Master who was staring blankly at him, a cold shiver passed over him, and he turned back to Bant and quietly said. “I’m not sure what I’ll be doing for lunch I will let you know. I will see you later” he said as she left. He closed the door quietly and turned around; Qui-Gon was standing in the middle of the room with his arms folded. “Come here please Padawan” Obi-wan felt the heat rise in his neck, he could never tell if Qui-Gon was angry or not, he always spoke in a calm voice. He could not tell anything through the bond either, for some reason only known to Qui-Gon, Obi-wan had been told only to access their bond when they were in the training rooms sparring or if they were on missions. From the day Qui-Gon took Obi-Wan as his apprentice on Bandameer. It was quite clear to Obi-Wan that their Master/Padawan pairing was a spur of the moment decision, a decision that was thrust upon Qui-Gon unintentionally by Obi-Wan, because he had offered to die to save the miners. Qui-Gon was an honest and fair man, and he would have felt obligated to reconsider Obi-wan’s apprenticeship, probably out of guilt, or more than likely a regrettable mistake on Qui-Gon s part. More and more Obi-wan was beginning to think he should have refused the offer of apprenticeship. He certainly was glad that Qui-Gon had rescued him from the mining platform, as he didn’t want to spend five years being a slave miner. Obi-wan always thought being an apprentice was going to be fulfilling and so different from the way it was. Several times over the last few weeks he had almost asked to be reassigned to the Agri-Corps. At least there he knew where he stood, he was unworthy to be a Jedi and nobody wanted him, so he could have just done his job and lived at the Agri corps out of the Jedi’s way. But by coming back here he was constantly reminded that no one else had wanted him as an apprentice and Qui-Gon didn’t really want him as an apprentice either. ( “ Force” he thought. Qui-Gon refused me enough times, I should have given up. Why did I accept, I should have seen it in his eyes that he didn’t really want me. The more I think about, it the more I believe it was because I said I would blow myself up in the mine. He felt sorry for me, and that’s why he finally took me. Now he regrets it, he certainly voiced his opinion of me and his reasons for not accepting me before we went to Bandameer. He told me I was too angry, and he told me that the Agri corps was the place for me. He told me to my face that he would not take me as his apprentice). All these thoughts were racing through Obi-Wan’s as he was being called to the middle of the room. “Yes Master” Obi-Wan said stopping directly in front of his Master. “Earlier this morning I had to speak to you about your clumsiness, because you broke my vase while you were drying your hair with the towel.” Qui-Gon stated. Obi thought (I wouldn’t have broken it had you not scared me. For crying out loud who gets up at 4.30 in the morning, I was still half asleep, when you dropped my books on the table making me bump the table knocking the vase over. Citing that you tripped over my books, which I had left on the floor in my room. How could you trip over them, It wasn’t as if they were in your way they were in my bedroom, and you never go in my room, you just stand at the door. Like I have a disease or something) Bringing his thoughts back to the conversation. He answered “Yes Master I am sorry that I broke your vase I didn’t mean to” Qui-Gon studied Obi-Wan for a moment and thought ( I suppose I was a bit harsh) “Yes you have apologised Obi-Wan so we will forget about that, Now, did I ask you to be quiet while you studied with Bant?” “Yes Master” “Then why is it that while I was trying to… meditate, you had to make so much noise”. Qui-Gon said. “I am sorry Master but Bant was excited and I was happy for her. I did not realise you were Meditating Master? I thought you were just looking out the window” Qui-Gon closed his eyes for a moment and thought (What is wrong with me, I just lied to my apprentice, he is right I wasn’t meditating at all. But no matter, I will not allow him to back answer me or be disrespectful. I let Xani do that and look what happened to him) “Obi-Wan I am trying to be patient with you, but being a Jedi is a very serious commitment and sometimes it appears that you are not as committed as you should be. I brought you back from Bandameer, because you showed me that you had commitment, but of late you have constantly tried my patience”. That really stung. Obi-Wan felt a pang of dread rise within him. “I-I am committed Master I want to be a Jedi more than anything. It is all I ever wanted, I couldn’t be anything else." Obi tensed fearing the worst; Qui-Gon was finally going to dismiss him as his apprentice. He would stand tall, he would take it like a man, he would not beg. Obi-Wan straightened up and waited for the dismissal…... 	Lovely! Obi-wan felt the heat rise in his neck, he could never tell if Qui-Gon was angry or not, he always spoke in a calm voice. He could not tell anything through the bond either, for some reason only known to Qui-Gon, Obi-wan had been told only to access their bond when they were in the training rooms sparring or if they were on missions. But no matter, I will not allow him to back answer me or be disrespectful. I let Xani do that and look what happened to him. Qui-Gon can't let what hapened in the past controp the present. He would stand tall, he would take it like a man, he would not beg. Obi-Wan straightened up and waited for the dismissal... Poor Obi-Wan. I look forward to seeing where you take this! 	Thanks Misty I hope you enjoy it as you have probably guessed I like to post every few days So here is Chapter 2..... “Then I suggest you control your emotions and keep your mind on the here and now” Qui-Gon stated. “I will Master I promise, it won’t happen again” Obi blurted out. “I want you to write an essay on the folly of speaking without thought of others peace and quiet.” Qui-Gon stated. “Yes Master, when Master?” Obi asked. “Here and Now” Qui-Gon pointed to Obi’s Bedroom and tidy up your room. I have to go out now but I will be back later and I will expect both jobs to be finished. I expect you to be here when I return as well Padawan. Do I make myself clear?” “Yes Master” Obi acknowledged with a nod as his Master walked out the door. (Well I can forget lunch with Bant. I do not know how long he will be and I cannot risk not being here when he returns. I thought for sure he was going to send me packing this time, I just don’t understand it, why did he take me as his Padawan in the first place? I had no idea being an apprentice was going to be so complicated).Obi thought to himself as he Sat down to write the essay. Obi-Wan finished the essay in good time, it was one of his favourite things to do, he loved writing, and over the last three months of his apprenticeship, he had written several essays at his Masters request. But Obi was perplexed that his Master never discussed them with him. He wondered if Qui-Gon even read them, he doubted it. So in this essay he wrote all his faults down and what his Master expected of an apprentice, he accepted the blame for everything and then offered to leave if it was what Qui-Gon wanted. He wrote at the bottom ‘ Master I am truly sorry for causing you so much trouble and I will not be offended if you wish to dismiss me.’ Yours truly Obi-Wan Kenobi. Lunch time came and went, Obi-Wan made a sandwich but then he found that he had no appetite, so he sat looking out the window wondering what Qui-Gon saw when he sat here all the time. It puzzled Obi-Wan as there was nothing to see just other buildings and air craft whizzing past…… ~~ memory sequence~~ Looking out the window he let his mind wander to the first time he had met Qui-Gon it was at a Tournament, Qui-Gon was sitting with Master Yoda, and Obi-wan had just finished the first round. Master Yoda was talking to Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan came over at Yoda’s request and introduced him. Obi-wan had seen the big Master many times in the Temple over the years, some times with his former apprentice and other times by himself. Once he saw him sitting on a bench in the garden, and Obi-wan felt immense grief pouring from Qui-Gon, Obi-wan nearly went over to him to see if he could be of assistance to him in any way. But he was stopped by Master Yoda who said “Your concern serves you well young one , but now is not the time to show it. Master Jinn does not require company at this moment. It is a time for solitude and reflection. “But Master, I only wanted to make him feel better” Obi had said. “One day my young friend, you will be able to help him but not today.” Obi-Wan was confused. “What do you mean ‘one day’ Master?” “How old are you young Obi-wan? Yoda queried. “I just turned Ten Master” Obi-wan answered. “Then too young for you too worry about the future. Ask me again when twelve you are” he said. “Twelve; That’s when I will be picked as an apprentice won’t it Master?” Obi-wan answered excitedly. “Yes, Young one you will be apprenticed to a fine Jedi” Master Yoda confirmed. Closer to his twelfth year each time he passed Qui-Gon in the Hall or the Garden or the Training sallè he had felt the force whispering to him. A tingling sensation would form in his mind; it was a bond forming, between him and Qui-Gon. He didn’t know how or why it was happening, but even though the first sensation was comforting, it usually turned to pain. What he didn’t know was that Qui-Gon had sensed the bond forming as well, and each time he drew near the boy he would slam up his shields, closing the fledgling connection forming between them. It was like the man was throwing daggers into Obi-wan’s mind, his head would ache as though some one had hit him in the head. Obi-wan remembered what Master Yoda had said to him a couple of years before about him being an apprentice to a fine Jedi. Obi-wan always held onto that hope that he was going to be an apprentice. But his hopes turned to devastation when he was rejected and was sent to Bandameer. Obi-Wan had heard the rumours about Qui-Gon’s last apprentice turning and that he would never take another Padawan. But by the time Obi had reached Bandameer he was desperate, he knew Qui-Gon was his last hope. As far as Obi-wan knew even the Council had decided he wasn’t worthy, at least that’s how Obi felt because no initiate was sent away before their thirteenth birthday. Obi-wan had been the first. But what he didn’t know was that there was a computer error and his date of birth and other details in the computer had been transferred incorrectly. It was a mistake that he had been sent to Bandameer. When Yoda and the Council found out, they had decided to wait just in case Qui-Gon changed his mind and accepted Obi-Wan as his apprentice. Qui-Gon had gone to Bandameer on a mission, the Council hoped Qui-Gon would bring Obi-Wan back as his apprentice. If he didn’t they would recall Obi-Wan and assign him another Master, they had no intentions of letting Obi-wan go. They knew he was meant to be a Jedi. The trouble with that was, no one had ever told Obi-Wan of the mistake, because Qui-Gon ‘had’ accepted him so it wasn’t deemed important. But it was important to Obi-Wan’s mental well being, if they had told him he might have had more confidence in his place at the Temple. But Obi thought the Council had forced Qui-Gon to take him, or he took him because he felt sorry for him, which made him believe he was a failure. Nothing he did seemed to please his Master. Everything seemed OK at first when he had returned to the Temple after Bandameer, except Bruck had smirked about Qui-Gon only taking him because he felt sorry for him. That hurt. Then Xanatos had invaded the Temple with Bruck’s help. Obi-Wan in the ensuing battle was forced to kill Bruck in defence to save Bant and another initiate. Then they had gone to Telos chasing Xanatos and in the battle that followed, Xanatos had been backed into a corner, he laughed at Qui-Gon telling him he that he was a foolish old man Obi-wan remembered it vividly, Qui-Gon had screamed Nooooo Xani No…. as he jumped into the acid pool disappearing into the frothy substance, Qui-Gon had run over to the pool searching for him. Obi was stunned that Qui-Gon cried, and in the heat of the moment he turned to Obi and said “I wanted to save him, and return him to the light." Obi-Wan remembered thinking, if he had saved Xanatos would he have taken him back as his apprentice, and if so what would have happened to Obi-Wan! It was strange Qui-Gon just stared at him for several moments then shook his head saying “It’s alright Padawan , Xanatos could never have been my apprentice again, he had fallen too far to the Dark side.” Obi-wan was surprised, Qui-Gon must have heard his thoughts. But everything changed after that Qui-Gon became moody and picked on Obi-wan for every little thing. Qui-Gon never yelled, but it was his eyes they always pierced into Obi-wan like he was looking at some one else. Then the rules became harsher. Qui-Gon would train him and guide him, but be became colder to Obi-Wan their bond became a silent partner, only used for training. Early in their partnership Obi-wan would keep his end of their bond open, as he had no secrets and thought Qui-Gon would do the same. Only Qui-Gon liked keeping to him self and didn’t want Obi-Wan in his head constantly. Qui-Gon had slammed his shields up so quick that the pain of it sent Obi-wan to his knees. So ever since that day they only used the bond for training or missions. Before Qui-Gons shields went up that day, Obi-Wan had sensed that Qui-Gon believed his former Padawan had been the Perfect Padawan; and it pained Qui-Gon immensely to think he had failed to see the deceit in him. He was determined not to make the same mistake with Obi-Wan. It had scared Obi-Wan because he knew he was nothing like Xanatos. Didn’t his Master know that.?…… ~~ end of memory sequence~~ Obi-Wan sighed and looked around the apartment; he had been sitting staring out the window all afternoon. He got up and realised, he had been holding the finished essay in his hands, he placed the essay on the end of the table and then went into his room and tidied it up. By the time he had cleaned his room it was nearly evening meal time and Qui-Gon had not returned yet. He started to prepare the meal, which brought another thought to mind (How many times have I prepared a meal, only to eat on my own, then get up in the morning to find that Qui-Gon’s meal has been put in the bin. Qui-Gon knew he was been hard on Obi-Wan, but every time he tried to see Obi-Wan as an individual, something would happen to remind Qui-Gon of his former apprentice. The way the boy would swing his sabre, or balance on the beams, or the way he would laugh, would remind Qui-Gon that even a happy smiling Padawan could be hiding deceit behind that smile. “Qui-Gon I am surprised that you can even compare Obi-wan to that horror you called an apprentice” Tahl snapped when Qui-Gon compared the two. “The only similarity, was the colour of their sabres, and as far as similarities when balancing on the beams, all the Padawan’s have had the same instructor, Master Winslow has been teaching the same technics for twenty years,and my stars Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan’s smile would light up a dark room, whereas your former apprentice would draw the darkness around him like a cloak; and his smile was more of a smirk.” she argued. Qui-Gon was going to object, but Tahl cut him off. “My friend you know I speak the truth Your former apprentice was a bad seed, and others could see it. I am sure you would have seen it too had you listened to the force, and focused on what it was trying to tell you; or maybe you knew but didn’t want to believe it could happen to you. And now it appears you are heading down that path again, are you going to make Obi-wan pay for Xanatos mistakes?” she asked. “No I am not making Obi-Wan pay for anything, I just want to make sure he stays on the right path. “ Qui-Gon you must let go of Xanatos and accept that he was never going to be a Jedi. You are not the only Master to loose an apprentice, and I doubt if you will be the last, it is a hard path to follow it takes will and determination and something he did not have. Xanatos did not have the capacity to be selfless, honest and faithful, all the qualities that Obi-wan has. Obi-wan is nothing like your former apprentice, there is no darkness in him and you should get to know Obi-wan better, talk to him .” She berated. Qui-Gon knew she was right but he couldn’t clear his head, and he hadn’t been able to put the past behind him. He needed to meditate and open himself completely, and work through his feelings. Qui-Gon left her apartment quite late and was feeling much better. He had a new outlook on life and was determined to correct his mistakes with Obi-wan, he would confide in the boy and ask Obi-wan to help him through their problems. Together they would banish the past and Qui-Gon’s first duty was to forge an unbreakable bond with his Padawan. He would go back to their apartment and apologise and then he would explain why he had been acting so badly. He walked down the hall and bumped into Mace Windu who was returning from a Council meeting “Hello my friend you’re out late. I hope you haven’t being keeping your Padawan out this late Qui?" “Hello Mace, no my Padawan is home probably asleep now." “Good because I just chastised several Padawan’s for lurking around the Halls” .Mace confirmed. “Oh really Mace, what were they doing.” Qui inquired. “They said they had been to the Library, but my senses tell me otherwise. I am going to speak to their Masters in the morning”. Mace indicated. “Well I can assure you my Padawan was not with them, I grounded him today for …..Qui hesitated and then said “disobedience”. Mace was shocked. “Obi-Wan disobedient Never, I think you are too hard on him My friend ease up on the boy a bit, before you regret it”. Mace said shaking his head. “Yes that’s what Master Tahl said too. I know I have been too harsh with him. I am heading home now to apologise to him, if he is still awake. I didn’t realise how late it was.” Qui-Gon nodded to Mace as he continued on down the Hall. One of the Padawan’s who had been caught by Mace was just around the corner and heard their conversation. He was a former friend of Bruck’s and did not like Obi-Wan because he had killed Bruck. He thought he would say something to get Obi-Wan into trouble. He crashed into Qui-Gon as he came around the corner “Oh sorry Master Jinn I wasn’t watching where I was going.” “Yes well be aware of your surroundings in future, Padawan Keifer” Qui-Gon said as he moved around the boy. “Oh Master Jinn please don’t be mad at Obi for being late home this evening. He was helping me find a book!” “Well it was nice seeing you but I must hurry bye” Keifer said as he turned and walked away. Qui-Gon watched the boy walk away, his thoughts turned to Obi-Wan (“What am I to do with You Padawan? 	But everything changed after that Qui-Gon became moody and picked on Obi-wan for every little thing. stalks towards Qui-Gon with baseball bat in hand Qui-Gon never yelled, but it was his eyes they always pierced into Obi-wan like he was looking at some one else. Then the rules became harsher. Qui-Gon would train him and guide him, but be became colder to Obi-Wan their bond became a silent partner, only used for training. Obi-Wan isn't Xanatos and Qui-Gon needs to realize that. Though for some reason, I have a feeling it will take a while to get through that thick skull of his, lol. Excellent work as always! 	Great job on this story! I loved how Tahl and Mace were standing up for Obi-Wan. At least they realize the truth about poor little Obi.
