Type/Timeframe: AU The life of a young Obi-Wan, age 12 - 20
Characters: Obi-Wan, Bruck, Padmè, Qui-Gon and a few Oc’s all known characters are owned by Lucus and Watson I’m just playing with them.
Summary: Obi-Wan doesn’t get chosen as an apprentice, and is sent to the Agri-corps.





“Well, well! if it isn’t Kenobi” snarled Bruck. He was standing over the boy, whom he had just tripped over. Twelve year old Obi-wan was carrying a long cylindrical parcel, he had been assigned to deliver the parcel to Master Jinn. However Bruck saw him coming down the hall, and had hidden around the corner. Blocking his force presence, he stuck his foot out as Obi-Wan walked by, and whatever was inside the parcel was now broken. Obi-wan heard it smash as he hit the floor. He twisted around while he was still on the floor, and screamed “Bruck, what did you do that for?” as he stood up, and looked down at the package, his anger flared. Yet he released it to the force and gritted his teeth. “Why do you hate me so much” He asked.

“Why? I’ll tell you why” Bruck whispered. He poked at Obi-Wan’s head. “I feel it, the light side, it fills you. I struggle to find it in me, and I need Master Jinn to help me purge the darkness. You don’t need him. I do!” Bruck heard footsteps coming from around the corner. So he grabbed Obi-Wan and pulled him to the ground and punched him. They rolled around the floor as other initiates gathered. Obi-Wan could not control his anger any longer and he retaliated hitting Bruck. Soon a crowd was watching, and in each corner were friends of each boy. All yelling, and encouraging both boys to fight.

Abruptly from behind, both boys were grabbed by the scruff of their collars, and hauled apart.
“What is the meaning of this disgusting display? how dare you fight in the Temple……this is a place of peace” the Master berated. Obi-wan looked past Bruck, he was being held by Master Plo Koon.
He turned his head, and saw that Master Windu was holding him. Obi-wan was annoyed with him self for losing his temper, and before he could get control of his emotions, Bruck spoke.

“I’m so sorry Master Windu…. I accidentally crashed into Obi-wan as he was running around the corner, and he dropped his package. I think it is broken….. I said I was sorry…. I tried to help him up, but he attacked me” Bruck said calmly.

“That’s not true Master Windu…..he deliberately tripped me, he knew that this package was for Master Jinn, and he wanted me to get in trouble. So he tripped me on purpose” Obi-wan shouted.

Master Windu shook Obi-wan. “We will not tolerate screaming young man. You ‘will’ control your temper, or I shall put you on detention.”

Obi-wan had, just about enough of Bruck, this was the seventh time in the last year that the arrogant and devious Bruck, had caused Obi-wan to get into trouble. Obi-wan took a deep breath and released his anger to the force. “I am sorry for my display of anger Master. I have no excuse for losing my temper. I was just upset, because whatever is in the package is broken” Obi-wan stated quietly.

“That is much better initiate Kenobi!” Master Windu exclaimed as he let go of Obi-wan. He bent down and picked up the parcel, just as Qui-Gon came around the corner. Both boys looked his way, and once again Bruck jumped in and spoke first.

“I’m sorry Master Jinn, Obi-wan was running and he crashed into me. He has broken your parcel”. Bruck said smarmily.

Master Windu glared at Bruck. “We have yet to confirm the circumstances, Bruck!”

However Qui-Gon wasn’t listening to Mace, he was looking at his parcel. “What…… what happened to my Lamp?.....Oh no!…. I searched for two months for that Lamp. It was a Setla Lamp, and they are very rare”. Qui-Gon glared at Obi-wan “How could you be so careless, you know the rules about running in the Hall. I think you delight in disobeying the rules, initiate Kenobi”

Master Windu tried to calm Qui-Gon. “Qui-Gon this is not the place for discussing this”

Out of the corner of Obi-Wan’s eye, he could see Bruck smirking, and that made him feel worse. He was playing into Bruck’s hands. Qui-Gon was berating Obi-wan, and the man seemed to intimidate him. Obi-Wan felt inferior, like a second rate insect, when Qui-Gon looked down at him.
Obi-wan was apprehensive, and he could hardly get the words out of his mouth. “N…o Sir I wasn’t running” Obi-wan insisted, however Qui-Gon was already storming past Mace and Obi-wan with his broken Lamp. “I’m sorry” he whispered to the back of Qui-Gon.

“Qui-Gon..wait,! Master Windu called. He wanted Qui-Gon to hear both sides of the story, however Qui-Gon barrelled down the hall, leaving him to sort it out.

Several hours later, Obi-wan and Bruck were called to the Council chambers. Both boys stood in the centre and waited. Obi-wan, noticed that Master Yoda wasn’t in his chair, and then he remembered that he had gone to Dagabah for his sabbatical, he would be gone for a year.
Obi-wan sighed, and thought. (Well there goes my chance of ever being a Jedi, Master Yoda was the only one who even spoke to me, I thought he liked me, but I guess that doesn’t matter now, he’s gone)
“Bruck, - Obi-wan, - today is your last chance to prove your worthiness to be chosen as an apprentice. At the moment there is only one Master looking for an apprentice at this time. Unfortunately, only one of you will become a Padawan today. The other one will be reassigned to the Agri-Corps. However, that doesn’t mean your future won’t be that of a Jedi. One of you will be placed in the Corps, until another Master is available. Then you will be recalled to the Temple. Do you both understand?” Master Windu asked.

Both boys answered together “Yes Master”

“Very well prepare for the tournament, Master Jinn is waiting in the arena for you”

Both boys bowed and left the chambers, and as they walked down to the arena. Bruck laughed. “You have no hope of being Master Jinn’s apprentice, Kenobi! I overheard him say that he would take the worst initiate in the Temple, rather than take you”

Obi-wan looked sideways at Bruck, and smiled. “Well then, I guess you can be proud to know, that if he chooses you today, everyone will know that you are the worst initiate in the Temple.”

That made Bruck angry, and he swung his fist in Obi-wan’s direction, except Obi-wan ducked and brought his own fist up, hitting Bruck in the mouth, splitting his lip open.
“Oww” he spat out, and Obi-wan took off at a flat out run.
“You just wait Kenobi, you’ll be sorry”

Obi-wan arrived at the arena and walked in to the centre and bowed to the Masters. He stood calmly waiting for Bruck. Soon Bruck came in, and from the stands Obi-wan heard gasps of disbelief. He turned and looked at Bruck, who not only had a split lip, but he had scratches on his face as well.
“What happened to you Bruck?” questioned the Master referee.

While they were waiting for Bruck to speak, Obi-wan silently berated himself for being so stupid. Once again he had fallen into Bruck’s trap. There was no way he would be chosen as an apprentice now. He resigned him self to his fate in the Agri corps.

“I was coming here with Obi-wan, from the Council chambers. Obi-wan started hitting me, and told me I was too stupid to be an apprentice” Bruck said sadly.

“Initiate Kenobi, is what initiate Chun says true, did you hit him?” questioned Master Windu who had just arrived.

“He swung at me first, Master only he missed, my fist connected with his mouth, but I didn’t scratch his face.” Obi-wan said honestly.
Master Windu sensed Obi-Wan was telling the truth. “We will have to postpone the trial, until Bruck’s face is checked, and we find out what really happened” he considered.

Abruptly, from up in the stand, a voice called out “Wait…..I do not need to watch them spar. I have made up my mind” Everyone turned to look at Qui-Gon Jinn. “I have seen enough over the past few days, to know who will be the better Padawan. I have had enough experience with hot-tempered and angry initiates, who will turn to the dark side. I do not intend to take another angry young man, so I choose initiate Bruck Chun as my apprentice”.

Mace Windu glared at Qui-Gon. He had spoken to Qui-Gon earlier about the Setla Lamp and he thought he had convinced Qui-Gon that he believed Obi-Wan. However, as usual his friend was rushing in blindly, before he learnt the truth about this new incident. Mace was sure that Bruck had set Obi-Wan up, yet he had not had a chance to prove it yet. Now it was too late, he knew his friend was too stubborn to change his mind, and would not listen.
It seemed that Bruck disliked Obi-wan with a passion. He knew which buttons to press to make Obi-Wan lose his temper, and he would fall into Bruck’s trap. It was Obi-wan who was seen as the volatile and angry initiate, the one who would most likely turn to the dark side. Or so Qui-Gon Jinn had declared, when he announced that he was taking Bruck as his apprentice.

Mace wished Yoda was here, he would know what to do……..

this was a good first post happy for one, i'm glad that yoda said that the whoever didn't make it was only going to agricorps temporarily until another master needed a padawan.

i'd hate for obi to think he was stuck in agricorps forever because bruck is good at getting him into trouble!
also, i like how obi doesn't seem so innocent in this as he sometimes seems. bruck gets him into trouble, but his angry reactions to it really make him look bad.
still, mace sees through bruck, and qui-gon is being stubborn. you really like to see me upset with qui-gon i think tongue

i'm really curious to how this will go.. pm's would be appreciated hugs

This sounds like the start on a good story... I would like to know what happens with obi now... I hope Qui will come to his senses and see what an evil little boy Bruck is and chose obi instead... or will another master get the chance, perhaps?.. anyway it was a good post... please continue I will be waiting for more dancing

It's just heartbreaking for Obi-Wan to be passed over for Bruck. sad And sent to Agri-Corps. I rather wish Agri-Corps weren't looked at like a punishment by the initiates, since farming is an honorable pursuit, but not if you don't want to do it. Now, this is an interesting statement from Bruck.

“Why? I’ll tell you why” Bruck whispered. He poked at Obi-Wan’s head. “I feel it, the light side, it fills you. I struggle to find it in me, and I need Master Jinn to help me purge the darkness. You don’t need him. I do!”

He might not be just a bully.

Agricultural Corps, it was an organisation that Obi-wan knew of well. It was a constant companion in his thoughts. Just lately he could feel his path edging closer and closer to the Corps. He didn’t want to be sent there to become something other than a Jedi Padawan. However his nightmares had come true. Obi-wan, was on his way to Thyferra. It was a hot and humid planet, where Bacta was produced.

He was assigned to the Bacta station, which was located near an active volcano. Each day Obi-Wan would tend the containers that held the living organisms. His job was to determine how much of the chemical Kavam should be added to Alazhi to grow the Bacta lotion. At first he thought it was interesting, knowing how Bacta was produced. However it was a boring job and Obi-Wan hoped that a Master would come for him soon. Nevertheless one didn’t come and for nearly a year, Obi-wan did his duty and remained on Thyferra assigned to the Agri corps.

One night, Obi-Wan was shaken from his bed, by a loud explosion. The ground beneath him shook violently. He raced out side, just in time to dive for cover, as molten rock showered down on the dormitory where he had been sleeping. Panic ensued and people were running for cover. Fires engulfed the records building, and the main office. Obi-Wan was covered in black soot as the volcano erupted, and it stung his eyes. He followed some of the other workers to a clearing a short distance away, just as several ships landed.

The eruption had been felt for miles, and from space it could be seen as well. One of the ships the Sun Seeker, which was an exploration vessel, saw the explosion from space. It landed in the clearing to assist the medics on Thyferra. The crew set up a medical tent and began treating the injured. The pilot of the Sun Seeker noticed Obi-Wan helping injured people to the tent. He sensed a strong force connection in the boy, and although he appeared quite young, he was calm and focused on what he was doing.

The man smiled, and watched as Obi-Wan worked tirelessly through the night helping where he could. By early morning the authorities and officials from the Agri-Corps were rounding up the survivors. They were taking names and trying to find out who had survived. Those who had been identified were loaded on a transport to be taken to another facility. The pilot watched as the boy hung back, he was standing behind a container hidden from view. He sensed an overwhelming sadness from the boy. It appeared that He didn’t want to be an Agri-corps worker. He wanted to be needed, and he wanted to help people.

The man walked up to Obi-Wan. “Excuse me young man, could you help me?”
Obi-Wan nodded. “Yes Sir, what can I do?”

“Now that the authorities have set up their own medical tent, I need help to dismantle our tent and take it back to the ship…I would appreciate your help” he explained.
“Yes Sir I can help you” Obi-Wan answered. He sensed this man was force sensitive and he felt comfortable in his company. Once Obi-Wan helped stow the tent in its compartment, the man spoke to him. “You were of great assistance out there young man, what is your name?”
“Obi-Wan Kenobi Sir”
“You are assigned to the Agri-corps?” he asked.
Glumly Obi-Wan nodded. “Yes Sir”

“You don’t sound like you are happy with your situation” he inquired.

“I do not have a choice” Obi mumbled.

“Ah, don’t be so sure young man; we all have choices, let me introduce my self. I am Cass Durron.
I am a retired Jedi Master”

Obi-Wan’s mouth dropped open. “Master Durron... you were a Jedi?”

“Yes and if I am not mistaken so are you?”

Obi-Wan dropped his head. “No I’m not a Jedi, I wasn’t chosen!” he exclaimed.

“Obi-wan I am astounded that you weren’t chosen why… if you don’t mind me asking weren’t you taken as an apprentice?”
“I don’t mind you asking, Master, they said I was too angry, and hot tempered, and I was told that I would most likely end up turning to the dark side”

“No !... I certainly don’t see that in you Obi-wan, and I have always been a good judge of character. I am appalled that the Jedi would even suggest that to you” Durron said shaking his head “No wonder I left the order! ”

“Why… did you… leave the order Master Durron?”

“I left the order many years ago. I was fed up with the creeping arrogance overtaking the Jedi. Once upon a time, we were a noble race of people, and the force gave us a gift, a gift to help people. The innocent and the weak depended on us. Yet that was a lifetime ago, before the Republic became a political arena. Once before the Sun Seeker landed on Thyferra, and I noted then, the waste of Jedi candidates that were assigned to the Agri Corps.”
He studied Obi-Wan for a moment seemingly coming to a decision. “Obi-Wan…I watched you out there. I would like you to join me here on the Sun Seeker. You are bright and intelligent, and you stayed calm and focused on what you were doing, while most of them panicked. The force is beckoning me, to take you away from here.” Master Durron concluded.

Obi-Wan didn’t want to stay on Thyferra a minute longer. “They won’t let me leave, just like that?” he spoke quietly.

“Then we won’t tell them! They won’t miss one person in this disaster!”

Obi-Wan realised that this was an opportunity for him to do something other than looking after Bacta. He felt comfortable around Master Durron, and besides he was a Jedi Master. It felt right.
“Thank you Master Durron and I thank the force also” Obi-wan said.

“Did you study planetary and navigational subjects at the Temple?” the old Master asked.

“Yes Sir, I did and I continued to study, in my spare time on Thyferra. I had access to the computers, and I had nothing else to do”

“Good, because this is an exploration vessel, so we will be going to many worlds in our travels. You can continue your studies, and be my assistant as well”. He stated.

“Tell me Obi-wan, do you still want to be a Jedi?”

“More than anything in the galaxy, Sir, however it will never happen, as no reject has ever returned from the Agri Corps as an apprentice” he mumbled.

“Obi-wan you are not a reject, and I do not want you to put your self down like that again. I will train you; and I will teach you every thing I know. You will be my unofficial apprentice.” he smiled.

Obi-wan looked at the old Master, he was very frail looking, and appeared to be very old. “Master… are you sure?”

Master Durron laughed. “I know what you’re thinking Obi-wan, and you are right, I haven’t wielded a light sabre for many years, and my exercise consists of piloting this craft, and listening to the younger explorers discussing what planets to explore. Other than that I read. Not a very exciting life, I must admit. Yet teaching you, will give me a purpose. So if you are willing to do all the work, I will show you everything I can about being a Jedi.”

“Oh yes please Master, I would be honoured” Obi-wan answered.

Obi-wan was grateful to Master Durron, however he didn’t understand why this one time Jedi wanted to teach him the ways of the Jedi, when no one else believed him worthy.

After a few weeks of being Master Durron’s personal assistant, Obi-Wan could no longer hold back the question. “Master, may I ask you something?

Durron looked at Obi-Wan knowing full well what the question was. The old Master had sensed the boys burning desire to understand why he thought he was worth training.

“You may ask me anything, Obi-Wan?”

“Well I know you said I was connected to the force, and was a help after the volcano erupted, and that I stayed focused. You also said you didn’t sense any anger from me, and yet I know I was scared. At the Temple if I showed as much fear as I did on Thyferra, they would have said ‘Fear leads to anger, and hate, and the dark side’. I...I was just wondering why you didn’t say anything about my fear, and how did you know that I wasn’t angry and hot tempered?”

Durron thought before he spoke. “Tell me Obi-Wan, were you happy being at the Temple?”

“Oh Yes Master, it was my home, I felt safe….well most of the time anyway” he added.

“Most of the time?” Durron inquired.

“When I was younger I was so sure of my place, I felt confident that I was going to be a Jedi.
I wanted to be a good Jedi and help people, I felt like I had a destiny to be a part of making the galaxy a better place to live. In protecting the innocent from slavery and serving the Republic.
As I reached the age of choosing, I began to worry about the lack of Masters and Knights coming to the Temple to select apprentices, more and more of my friends were being assigned to other sections of the order. The medical corps and even the exploration Corps, one of my friends was interested in archaeology and was lucky enough to be assigned to the Academy of Jedi Archaeology, he was disappointed in not becoming a Jedi Knight, but at least he wasn’t sent to the Agri-corps.

I started to have bad dreams, about failing to be chosen, and I guess it made me angry because I seemed to always end up fighting and being punished.” Obi-Wan explained.

“Did you start the fights, Obi-Wan?”

“I don’t think I did, well not most of them, there was this one boy, he was a bully and he was always picking on me. One day I was running late for class and tripped over the step going into class, I knocked the bully over. I didn’t mean too and I apologised to him, but after that day he was determined to make my life miserable, and he succeeded. He was the biggest bully in the whole Temple and everyone knew it, and yet he is an apprentice and I am nothing.” he remarked sadly.

Of course you were scared, a volcano erupted, and killed many people. You had every right to be scared. Nevertheless my boy, you are worthy and I will show you how much.

I agree, I'm glad that Obi-Wan found someone who could see past the image that Bruck tried to create around him. I just hope Durron ends up being everything he appears to be and not someone who will lead Obi-Wan down a path that he was never intended to travel. worried
