Title: Jinngerbread Cookiees
Author Jinngerbread
Summary: See the author note.
Characters:Qui-Gon, Dooku, Obi-Wan, original characters.
Timeframe: Jumps all over the place depending on my muses' moods.
Author's Note: I suppose I should explain the madness. My muse was stuck in a rut and in order to make her start working again, DarthIshtar is graciously giving me 100 prompts to do 100 vignettes. For each one, I'll be doing a title and quote to set the tone. I hope to post once or twice a week. Enjoy!

Pathways of the Force

Every tomorrow has two handles. We can take hold of it by the handle of anxiety, or by the handle of faith. ~Author Unknown

There was a firm hold on his braid, and he grimaced slightly as it was pulled tight, yet the Jedi didn't move.

And then it began.

He felt it tug and pull against the grain of the hair, the ceremonial blade slicing through the carefully braided pieces, splitting each one apart.

Released, the braid fluttered to the ground.

It was over.

Qui-Gon stared down at the shorn braid at his feet and touched the spot of severed hair. He wasn't entirely sure what he was supposed to feel. Happiness, he mused. He was very happy that he had achieved the rank that he had fought so hard to earn. So many hours of training, study, missions upon missions, helping to serve the galaxy as a padawan learner.

But to actually see the braid, his treasured most priceless object on the ground at his feet; spoke volumes about the finality of this action. There would be no Master looking back over his shoulder, to make sure that he had done something correctly, no one to follow when walking, no one to rescue him if things came crashing down around his ears, or look to for reassurance and guidance. His reputation and career would be on his shoulders alone.

The fate of people's lives could be altered just by his service, as he went from planet to planet on missions, going where the Order deemed him best to serve. It was an awesome responsibility and one that was not lost on the former learner.

He was a Jedi Knight in the service of the Republic.

"Rise Knight Jinn," his Master's voice jarred him out of his reverie that had come over him.

He stood in one fluid motion, marveling slightly.

Knight Qui-Gon Jinn.

His lips quirked upwards smoothly as elation overcame his somber mood.

Even though a chapter of his life was now ended, as Dooku's apprentice, he found himself looking forward to the new challenges that lay ahead.

Who was Knight Qui-Gon Jinn? Qui-Gon pondered this as he spoke to his friends and colleagues who had gathered for this simple ceremony. He wasn't entirely sure.

Padawan Jinn he knew well.

He had been a lanky youth, strong in the Living Force, and eager to please his Master doing everything he could with his whole heart in it, helping people and animals alike to find the paths they were meant to.

As a Knight however, did he truly know himself?

The Knight knew there would be many challenges to face and wrongs to right, and people to serve. The Jedi life he knew was not an easy life, but easy was not for those who served the Will of the Force above their own desires, as he tried with all his heart to do. He knew it would take patience and dedication and a lifetime to learn to truly serve the Force. In so doing the will of the Force, he knew he would find his own path as he was meant to. He would grow and mature as all Jedi did, developing more fully in the Force.

He did not know himself now, he admitted, especially when one considered all that lay ahead. The Force would guide him to finding out who he was and helping him to serve to the best of his abilities.

Qui-Gon had faith in it.

This was wonderful. I loved the way Qui-Gon wasn't sure who he was at the moment but his dedication to the Force was strong and his determination to see it through was so much him!

Padawan Jinn he knew well.

He had been a lanky youth, strong in the Living Force, and eager to please his Master doing everything he could with his whole heart in it, helping people and animals alike to find the paths they were meant to.

Great job on this!

I always did wonder what Qui-Gon was thinking during his knighting. I liked this alot. Very nice, simple, to-the-point execution. It leaves you with a kind of happy, thoughtful mood. Great work! grin

Ah yes, that is Qui-Gon to a T.

I'm not surprised he felt the full weight of knighthood upon his shoulders so quickly. I'm just happy he kept his faith that the Force would always guide him.

Looking forward to more

Circumference

Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future. ~Paul Boese

"Rise and shine, Obi-Wan," Qui-Gon entered his apprentice's room, already dressed and ready to go. The day was full of promise, and the sooner one started it, the better. "Lights on," he said and the lights blazed on in response.

Obi-Wan sat up slowly, rubbing his eyes. "What time is it?"

Qui-Gon knew this answer would not please the boy. "Time to get up, we're going on a picnic," he replied, pulling the covers off.

"A picnic?" He was wondering if he had heard right. His Master was a bit eccentric sometimes, but who had ever really heard of going on a picnic in this modern day and age?

"Of course," Qui-Gon replied, watching his apprentice.

"Master, it's not even dawn, yet."

"So it isn't," Qui-Gon agreed, his mustache quirking upward.

"And you want to go on a picnic?" his apprentice asked, a hint of disbelief in his voice.

Qui-Gon tugged on his padawan's braid. "Of course, padawan."

"I'll be dressed in just a few minutes, Master," he yawned, even as he stretched.

"Very good padawan, I'll go collect our supplies and see you in the common area when you're dressed," the Jedi Master left, knowing that his apprentice didn't entirely understand why he was doing this, but he would.

There was a sight not to be missed he was keen on his apprentice seeing.

He knew Obi-Wan didn't appreciate the Living Force as much as he did, but if there was one thing that they both enjoyed it was a beautiful view.

The master began getting the supplies together, pleased that palace staff had provided them with everything they needed.

This would be a very enjoyable day.

~*~

Obi-Wan walked beside his Master in the darkness, using the Force to feel Qui-Gon's signature to stay close to him.

Rather than using a light to help them know where they were going, Qui-Gon was using this as an exercise in helping Obi-Wan to see without the use of his eyes. It was typical of his master to turn situations like this into teaching opportunities and he normally appreciated them.

Normally.

Yet today was supposed to have been a day off for them, and he couldn't help but be slightly disappointed that he wasn't getting to have the day off from the intense negotiations and sleeping in that he had hoped for.

Perhaps another time, though.

He was enjoying bonding with Qui-Gon very much.

The experiences of him joining the Young had left their bond fractured. The subsequent siege on the Temple, and the following hunt with Xanatos, had left little room for downtime with the two of them to rebuild their bond that had been broken.

Yet perhaps today would be a chance to rebuild.

"Concentrate, Obi-Wan," his Master's voice said softly.

He pulled his thoughts away from his musings and dutifully concentrated on following his Master's signature in the Force. "Yes, Master."

He wondered where there were going for their pre-dawn picnic but he knew Qui-Gon would reveal when he was ready.

They continued walking.

~*~

Qui-Gon drew in a deep breath, and then let it out slowly, as they walked, enjoying the communion with the Living Force around him. Indeed, even this early the birds were chirping and other animals saying their good morning greetings to the new day that was to come. He had a basket from the palace staff hanging safely at one elbow with enough food for two meals, as he did not know how long they would stay.

However long the Force willed, he knew that much.

They walked for a long time and finally came to where he had planned for them to be. "Stop, Obi-Wan. " he commanded gently and the padawan did as he was told.

"Open your eyes," he ordered next, in the same quiet tone.

~*~

Obi-Wan opened his eyes, expecting to be able to see something that Qui-Gon had wanted for him to see. However, when he opened his eyes, it was still dark and he couldn't see a thing. "Master it's still dark," he pointed out frowning. "We can't have a picnic in the dark."

He wondered how far they had walked.

It was too dark to tell where exactly they were.

There were no streetlights, no buildings with lights on to give direction, nothing but his Master's Force signature and the darkness of the nature around them.

"Kneel, Obi-Wan."

Obi-Wan knelt obediently as he was directed and he heard his master doing the same. He still didn't quite understand what was going on. He hoped the point would be made soon.

"Patience, padawan," his Master seemed to know what he was thinking. "You will see soon enough."

The shrill cry of a native bird rent the silence and that seemed to be the cue that nature had needed. The sky was lightening, he realized. Pink and red crested over the top of another plateau nearby, and the angle reflected off the ridge where they were standing was beautiful.

The sunlight lengthened, slowly chasing away the shadows of the night, the pink and red giving way to orange and gold.

The padawan stared, mesmerized as the sun rose more above the cliffs, bathing the valley below in it's golden light.

He had no idea nature could be so breathtaking.

If his Master had told him before today that he would enjoy getting up before dawn to see the sunrise, he knew he would've disagreed. He was not as in tune with the Living Force as Qui-Gon was and he certainly did not normally enjoy getting up before dawn. Yet, with a moment of insight, he realized his teacher had chosen this to be able to help him share something he loved with his apprentice.

It warmed his heart that Qui-Gon would want to do such a thing with him.

Beside him, Qui-Gon let out a contented sigh as the cry of the same bird from earlier came again.

"Master?" Obi-Wan spoke up tentatively. "Thank you for sharing this with me," he said shyly.

There was a warm hand on his shoulder and he smiled feeling it. "You are welcome, Obi-Wan. I hoped you would enjoy it just as much as I."

The apprentice nodded quickly. "I have. I didn't really think I would at first, but it's too beautiful to be missed."

"I'm glad you agree," the Master said softly. The Master paused for a long moment. "Xanatos never could appreciate anything like this," he said in a quiet tone. "Much as I had always hoped he would come to an appreciation for such things, he never did."

Obi-Wan put a gentle hand of comfort on the hand still on his shoulder, hesitantly reaching through the connection they shared. The padawan felt Qui-Gon's strong signature wrap around his own, and he smiled.

They were connected.

That was sweet. I liked that Obi-Wan didn't want to get up in the dark but he obeyed Qui-Gon. And then he learned why. Awwwww.

If his Master had told him before today that he would enjoy getting up before dawn to see the sunrise, he knew he would've disagreed.
