Sorry I got behind but wow I've been ROTFL at the scavenger hunt!!! Dex and Jemmiah, what a team!!!!
it'll annoy the hell out of Windu
- As good a reason as any!
Or stop to hug a pillar every time we walk past one?" He added teasingly. "Because there are a lot of pillars and I don't think we have time to"
- Dex is just brilliant!
Mace recalled that his target audience was generally between the ages of four and eleven years of age, and probably hadn't understood a word he had said
- Poor Mace, he isn't having a good day!
The year you NEARLY won?"
- Go dex!!!!!
Windu prize for intergalactic idiocy
- Is he aware of this award?
Excellent idea of Jemmiah's but I hope that Mace can take a joke!

My first thoughts of a 'set of teeth' made me think of Dex's master immediately... but then again a 'stick and something shiny' makes me think Yoda and Mace.
Ah hah!!! See Dex has the same thing in mind... surprising it took so long with Yoda standing right there. Oh no... I am getting to know your mind Jemmy.... it is Mace!!!

Jemmiah
Two days later and everyone was still talking about the infamous 'Master Shiny' incident. Those masters and padawans amongst the jedi that did not know of Jemmiah prior to the scavenger hunt certainly did in the aftermath! A child that outsmarted Mace Windu certainly made for an interesting topic of conversation! Strangely enough Jemmiah found her newfound fame to be of a more palatable variety than the usual whispering that went on in her presence: far better to be a notorious prankster than an object of cold derision…
Gilda, whose whole purpose in life it seemed was to make Master Windu's existence a nightmare of constant teasing, had spent several un-jedi like moments helpless with laughter on the floor of the refectory, quivering like an electroshocked jellyfish! Samir at least had the dignity to hide his felineoid toothy grin behind his own padded paws, but the initiates and padawans had simply seen the uncharacteristic bout of hysteria as a license to guffaw. When Dex Berlingside just about collapsed across a dining table with tears streaming down his face it appeared to spell a swift end to any credibility Mace Windu might have remaining.
Fortunately Mace resorted to the one defense left to him and conjured up a smile from the depths of his jedi dignity, acknowledging that he was the butt of everyone's jokes and even nodding his head, grudgingly encouraging the youngsters to let the laughter out of their systems. And so it was that even the venerable Mace Windu gained a little credit in the face of adversity and not a little admiration from Jemmiah herself for his extraordinary good nature.
That was until their paths crossed next…
***
"Hello Master Windu." Jemmiah grinned impudently at Mace from the doorway, her small body partially blocking the way to the interior of Evla's living quarters. "Or should that be 'Master Shiny?' Master Amaline certainly seemed to think that it suited you!"
"Yes," Mace peered over her shoulder, attempting to see into the brightly decorate rooms behind her, "very amusing. Is Master Sovalla not in? I wished to speak to her."
"Everyone else thought it was funny." Jemmy regarded him with large, surprised eyes as he walked slowly past her, glancing all around the rooms as if to confirm his initial impression. "And no, Evla's not here. But she should be back any moment. I can always get you a drink or something to eat if you want to wait…"
The Jedi pulled back a large, padded cushion from Evla's sofa and squinted at it as if determining how soft it was to sit upon. Mace was a minimalist individual by nature. The solid harshness of his own couch was far more in keeping with his personality, with its stiff, unyielding fabric draped across a heavy wooden frame. Qui-Gon and Dex always complained about having to sit on his furniture: Berlingside had even gone as far as to say it was like 'sitting on a bed of nails, but without the comfort.'
"No, thank you." Mace answered with conviction. "The last time you got me something to drink it had insects in the bottom of the mug. But," he deigned to lower himself over the cushion, folding his robe beneath him with great care, "I will wait for Master Sovalla's return, seeing as how you believe her to be on her way back."
Jemmiah looked at him impassively before returning to sit by the table where she had left the sketch book Evla had brought her, picking up the purple chark-stick and rolling it between her fingers for a few moments. She liked Mace, but there was something about him that made her uncomfortable, as if she constantly had to be on her guard when he was nearby for fear of upsetting him or making him annoyed. The scavenger hunt showed that he did have a sense of humor but it wasn't something that Jemmy felt eager to exploit too many times. He was - when all was said and done - Mace Windu: otherwise known as Master Stuffy, Master By-The-Book, Master Serious and above all else Master Councilman-Jedi. His personality was set in stone: nobody could change it or even attempt to do so. Jemmiah knew that if anyone sought to change her own ways then they'd catch the sharp end of her tongue, so why should it be any different for the poor shiny headed one?
Still, to be so serious all the time must be an incredible burden…
"What is it you are doing?" Mace asked after a while, intent on resorting to polite conversation to fill in the time until Evla got back home.
"Sniffing Rhyl." Jemmiah giggled, coloring in the paper with the stick and then smudging the chalky substance with her fingers.
"Pardon?" Mace wondered if he'd heard right.
"I said I'm drawing still life." Replied the fast-thinking Jemmiah, briefly examining her ingrained fingers. "Evla was kind enough to get me this flimsy pad…I think really she just wants to keep me out of trouble but I appreciate it all the same, coz I like art. I think I'm kinda good at it if I'm allowed to be boastful."
Mace was about to reply that he'd never heard of a Corellian who wasn't boastful but then recollected that he was speaking to Jemmiah and not Dex Berlingside. Of course Evla was right to keep the girl occupied in a constructive way, and drawing was one of the finer, more skilled arts encouraged within the temple, something he'd shown flair for in his own youth once upon a time. True, he'd preferred design and basic architecture studies to sitting down at a table and drawing a bunch of flowers but that didn't mean he refused to acknowledge the talent of a budding enthusiast. Evla always did have a knack of spotting what made an individual tick, and in developing that trait further still.
"You're happy here?" Mace asked, picking at the edge of a cushion fringe. "You like your present situation with Master Sovalla?"
Jemmiah's eyes gleamed brilliantly as she put down the chark-stick and her enthusiasm was difficult to miss.
"Oh, yes!" She grinned; rubbing the tip of her nose with what she hoped was a chalk-free part of her hand. "It's been great here with Evla…so much better than with Sal-Fina. At least Evla wants me here, which is more than can be said for some people. And even although there's been a few minor problems," she thought she could just about see Mace prick up his ears at her words, "we've got over 'em pretty quickly. So we're best of friends."
"Good." Mace nodded approvingly. "I just wanted to make sure that you were finding things comfortable here in Qui-Gon's absence."
//Probably feeling guilty for sticking me with Sal-Fina in the first place.// Jemmiah's lips twitched with faint amusement. //I might have forgiven him…but I'm sure Master Jinn won't in a hurry! Maybe when Quiggy comes back I can really make the most of the situation! Then maybe he won't be so quick to dump me again next time the council wants him to do something! //
"I like Evla a lot." Jemmiah surprised herself by continuing. "She listens to people's problems without it actually sounding like she's prying. It's nice to be with someone who's actually pleased to speak to you. After half a lifetime of people who'd sooner kill you than look at you, it's kind of refreshing. And for someone who likes spending her time with babies," Jemmiah's face contorted as if she could smell something highly unpleasant under her nose, "I think she's a smart person. I'm glad to have met her."
"Even better then." Mace's body seemed to become less tense and uptight, his whole posture relaxing in light of her declaration. "It should make things a little more pleasant until Qui-Gon's return. You must miss him."
Something about the manner in which Mace looked at Jemmiah suggested he knew all too well that she was missing her Jedi protector and his padawan. His smile appeared genuinely sympathetic, eyes speaking of consideration and sympathy. Maybe, thought Jemmiah, there was more to Mace Windu than first met the eye?
"I know what that's like. At times when I was a padawan there were occasions when my master would be sent on missions without me. It saddened me because I knew that these were tasks deemed extremely high risk, where for the safety of the mission it was considered less of a liability to leave the padawans behind."
Jemmy forgot about her chalky hands and leaned her chin heavily against her open palm, leaving a purple stain behind on her lightly sunburned skin.
"Didn't you feel worried?" Jemmiah asked him, wondering how he could bear it, thinking all the time of Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan…and all the perils they might be facing.
"I managed to keep my fear in check most times, as a Jedi should. I told myself that my master was greatly skilled and if anyone could survive the odds then it was him. And so it proved to be. But I'm saying this," Mace pushed himself up off the couch, evidently no longer content to sit on something so comfortable and soft, "so that you might take courage from the same fact. Qui-Gon is an intelligent and quick-witted man, with sabre skills better than most in the temple. As for Obi-Wan, he's a fast learner and as the years pass he will find his true strength. They compliment each other very well…"
"So," Jemmy guessed the next part before Mace could even finish, "don't worry - yes?"
"Just so." Mace agreed, stepping closer to look over her shoulder at her drawing. "And I'm sure in Qui-Gon's expert care you will also do well. However…that does bring me on to the matter which I came to discuss with Evla."
He looked nervous, almost edgy. Jemmiah regarded him warily for a moment, knowing he was about to say something she wasn't going to like. It was always the same with these Jedi: pay a compliment first just moments before they produced the hammer blow. Suspicion caused Jemmy to lean slightly away from him so she could better see his reaction.
"What?" She asked him.
"Well, the little matter of the scavenger hunt did bring to my attention the amount of time you are spending with Master Berlingside. It was quite obvious that he put you up to that little stunt in the refectory, and whilst I can take a joke like anyone else it wasn't a particularly hilarious thing to do to someone infront of all those children…"
"But they liked it because you laughed!" Jemmiah complained, not sure that she should just come clean and own up to the fact that Dex hadn't infact been the one who'd so skillfully humiliated him. "It made them think you were…friendly!"
"That's neither here nor there." Mace said in a matter of fact voice. "And then there was the little matter of borrowing - and I use the word in its loosest terms - Master Yoda's stick."
There Jemmiah fell silent. She couldn't defend Dex on that score: she'd had nothing to do with it.
"He was only trying to help." Jemmy pleaded with him softly.
"I think it would be better if you kept away from Master Berlingside and his padawan for the time being." Mace continued, looking a trifle unsettled by the two copper eyes so intent on breaking down his resolve. "He's clearly an unstable influence and I'm not sure that there's much he can…"
"He's my friend!" Jemmiah continued to beg the master, who seemed abnormally oblivious to her cajoling…why that should be when it always worked on Qui-Gon she couldn't tell.
"And he'll still be your friend." Mace continued regardless of the distraught face before him. "It's just that…"
His eyes suddenly took in the chalk picture Jemmiah had been so diligently working on before he'd mentioned his dislike of her close friendship with Master Berlingside. It was a well drawn, pretty representation of glorious flowers and leafy green shoots contained within a simple, Alderaanian stem glass vase. Considering Jemmiah was only ten it was a very masterly exhibition of attention to detail; the tiny little veins within the orchid petals had been captured rather exquisitely. Mace however was not concerned at that moment with either detail or color…but rather the subject matter that had been unobtrusively staring him in the face since he arrived…
"Corellian Orchids?" Mace folded his arms and focused a suddenly frosty look upon her. "Just like the ones that went missing from the temple gardens. Just a coincidence?" His brow folded in on itself like a small landslide of flesh. "Or is there something you want to tell me?"

RE: It takes one to know one... (JA) *updated 19th Aug*
It took a fraction of a second for Jemmy to think of a suitable reaction to Master Windu's demand, her mind very nearly freezing with shock. She hadn't thought about the flowers in the vase! How could she when there had been no prior warning of Mace's arrival on the premises? Still, if only she'd been a little smarter then maybe she could have surreptitiously closed the flimsy pad so as not to draw attention to the subject matter…who knew, Mace might have remained in blissful ignorance had he not cause to think about it. Jemmiah turned an innocent, almost hurt I-don't-know-what-you-mean look on Mace Windu, deciding to say or do nothing until she heard what he had to say…
"What could I have to tell you?" Jemmiah feigned confusion.
Her replied startled Mace. What did she mean? It was perfectly clear to him that the flowers so neatly arranged in the container before them were Master Quillan's 'thieved' plants! The fact that Quillan had been chewing him out these last few days to try and find the culprit only served to enforce his determination - this could not go unreported…not unless some form of compromise could be found. Mace nodded silently to himself; this was perhaps the exact leverage that he needed to convince Jemmiah to stay away from the bad influence that was Dex Berlingside.
"You stole those flowers, didn't you?" Mace leaned in forwards and picked out a single orchid from amongst the bunch, bringing it up to eye level. There was no mistaking its close resemblance to the few remaining specimens still growing in the temple gardens, nor the ragged vibro-cut down at the end of the stem. The truth was not really in any doubt, yet he waited patiently for her response.
"I don't like the word 'steal'. It's not very nice." Jemmiah answered, pushing the chair away from the table.
"But accurate, surely?"
"I don't know what you are talking about." Jemmiah folded her arms and struck a near-perfect Qui-Gon pose in the vain hope that it might intimidate Master Windu. "I DID get Evla some flowers. You can ask Yaddle if you don't believe me. And I'm an honest person…most of the time."
"I don't believe that you got these," he indicated the enormous bunch of flowers, perhaps slightly past their best yet still unmissably eye-catching to say the least, "from Yaddle. And I also have it on good authority that you spend a considerable amount of time in the gardens."
"So?" Jemmiah felt herself becoming greatly annoyed with the doubts that Mace was expressing in her character. He didn't trust her! Okay, so this time he had good reason - but that was hardly an excuse to go about flinging groundless accusations in her face! "You spend hours locked in the council chambers with Depa Billaba, but that doesn't mean I think she's your girlfriend."
Mace was suitably dumbstruck.
"Anyway, you need proof before you can go about saying that people did wrong things." Jemmiah turned about-face and inched herself higher on her tiptoes, grasping the magnificent bouquet and clutching them to her possessively, not caring if the water dripped all over the floor. "Like when you said that Master Berlingside set you up just so he could make fun of you. He didn't do anything of the sort - that was my fault, and I," she broke off to thumb angrily at herself, "didn't do that to be nasty or anything. I did it so I could win! You should have gotten some evidence before you accused him like that."
"Perhaps." Mace relented somewhat sensing her indignation scream at him through the force, adamant in her denial. "But I still mean what I say about Dex Berlingside. In many ways he's a fine man…a kind man. But he's not a good role model in other respects…"
"How can being fine and kind not be good?" Jemmy demanded.
Mace was not prepared to be drawn on Dex's less desirable character traits; his gambling, his occasional drinking, his womanizing, his outrageous belief in Corellian luck - and his ability to overcome everything and anything. But especially the womanizing…it was just not a suitable topic to discuss with a ten year old girl, even one who had been brought up in a brothel. Certainly it was easy to be blind to the man's faults in the face of his affable, personable and usual gentlemanly manner, but in this instance Mace was not to be swayed.
"I at least have proof that YOU are the phantom orchid snatcher." Windu waved the plant stem at her. "I can easily get Master Quillan round her to identify them, you know. So, as much as it hurts to have to resort to blackmail in order to get you to do something, how about I say nothing about the flowers and in return you agree to spend less time with Master Berlingside and his padawan?"
Blackmail??? A jedi - a revered member of the council no less - was attempting to twist her arm into doing what he wanted! Briefly Jemmiah wondered if that was completely ethical, yet in a strange sort of way her appreciation of the devious Master Windu soared right through the roof. He appeared on the face of it to be so by-the-book! Now she could see why people thought him to be a dangerous and respected adversary. He was prepared to stake whatever he could to get the results he wanted.
Two could play at that game.
"What proof?" Jemmiah asked him casually.
"Why," Mace exclaimed in surprise, "The flowers you are holding in your own hands…"
Jemmiah's response was to fix him with a wry, lingering stare then walk over to the garbage disposal unit, where she opened the lid and threw the entire bunch of flowers down into the deconstructor, reducing them to green and purple sludge. It seemed like a tragic waste to Jemmiah, especially seeing how she had been in the middle of drawing them at the time. How she would explain their disappearance to Evla she didn't know…she'd think of something no doubt. As the machinery ground away at the vegetation, Jemmy closed the lid shut with a satisfying thud.
"What flowers?" She asked Mace.
Windu was aghast, unable to believe what he had just witnessed.
"At least I know it WAS you!" Mace responded after he managed to find his voice again. "You'd hardly have behaved in such a way if you were innocent."
"You've no proof." Jemmiah tossed back her head scornfully.
Mace's eyes fell directly on Jemmiah's beautiful representation of the orchids drawn so neatly within the flimsy leaves of the sketchpad. No proof? When she'd as good as left a holopic for him to use in evidence against her? And when her own chalky fingermarks were all over it?
"What's this?" Mace demanded, tearing out the picture from amongst the other leaves and waving it underneath her nose. "And it would appear that the guilty part has even signed it…what's the name? It looks like," Mace made a pretend show of squinting at the aurabesh lettering written in plain, childish handwriting, "J…J something…J G? Surely that stands for Jemmiah Gleshan?"
"That's not proof." Jemmiah's throat became dry knowing that Mace had managed to outsmart her at her own game. If he showed that to the council then they might revoke their decision to let her stay…and then by the time Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan returned she'd be out on the streets trying to survive by raking amongst the garbage in the skips! But she couldn't possibly let Mace blackmail her into agreeing not to see Dex; that would be plain wrong!
"It's very well drawn." complimented Mace, hoping that he didn't seem too horrible to the child. Yes, he wanted to get her agree to his terms but he didn't want to scare her - and he was certain he could sense a degree of fear within her. Qui-Gon would not have approved of his methods even if he would equally not have approved of Dex teaching her to play all manner of Corellian card games and gambling tricks. He was doing it for her own good - and that left his conscience clear although his methods were unscrupulous to say the least.
"Perhaps Master Quillan might like to hang it on his wall - to remind him of the ones that he used to have in the gardens?" Continued Mace with a subtle raise of his eyebrow.
Jemmiah felt her body tense angrily. She didn't like to behave dishonorably but in this instance she felt it was totally justifiable, especially when Mace himself was being so utterly sneaky!
"If you do show it to anyone," Jemmiah wiped her hands briskly against one another with an annoyed, choppy action, "I will tell Master Yoda that you think his lectures are 'drop-dead boring', that you'd 'rather have your teeth pulled than take part in any of his idiotic master and initiate bonding schemes' and that you think that he and Master Yaddle are secretly 'at it like tree frogs' in summer!"
Mace looked as if he had been stunned by a Nerf-prod. How had she heard him say those things…when??? Had she been eavesdropping whilst he'd talked to Qui-Gon? And would anyone seriously believe her if she DID tell? Who would take the word of a ten year old child against that of a councilman?
Answer: Yoda.
Damn, thought Mace, groaning inwardly. He should have know better than to go up against a devious Corellian!
"I give in." Mace spread his hands in a defeated gesture. "There's no point in my trying to save you from being morally corrupted - you're utterly irredeemable already. Infact I think in all likelihood you could teach Dex Berlingside a thing or two…"
Jemmiah grinned.
"You'd better be careful what you say in future," she winked impudently at him, "coz you never knew when impressionable children are around…listening!"
ENTRY NINETY EIGHT:
For a council member I think Mace is very corruptible.
Evla walked in and saw him with my picture and wondered what he was doing. I told her that Master Windu was so taken with it that he had agreed to buy it from me for fifty credits! He got so flustered that he had to pay up! I'll get Evla a proper bunch of flowers this time and still have money left over.
So although I am slightly uglier and sunburned than yesterday, I am slightly richer too!
Jemmy

You'd have thought that Mace would have learned by now that you can't outwit a Corellian. At least not without trying to dig yourself in deeper!

RE: It takes one to know one... (JA) *updated 23rd Aug*
Phew!! Had a few hours of utter panic this morning. Got up and wanted to sit at the computer, but when I push the on button nothing happened. After playing with the cords and such and still nothing I was assuming that the thing had died overnight. After leaving dejectedly for some therapy shopping I decided to mess with the surge bar... that was it. For some strange reason there just wasn't enough power to turn the computer on though the monitor and printer (also plugged in the surge protector) was on.
Thank goodness!!!
Ahhhh, I liked that even Mace managed a smile at his predicament.. though what else could he do.
Mace was about to reply that he'd never heard of a Corellian who wasn't boastful but then recollected that he was speaking to Jemmiah and not Dex Berlingside.
-- love this line!!! Hmmm, not too sure about Mace not wanting Jemmiah to be with Dex and Kryz... they certainly mean no harm.. not yet anyway...
Oh my... out-blackmailed by a ten year old???? I do agree with Mace that she may already have things to terach Dex!!
Awesome posts Jemmy!!

RE: It takes one to know one... (JA) *updated 23rd Aug*
School.
Jemmiah had been dreading it…all the things that would and could go wrong, the cold stares and the shunning from the kids whom barely weeks ago had tried their best to snap her neck in the dingy backstreets of Coruscant. Even the simple matter of the aircab ride had filled her with dread: she'd all but had to pick her fingernails out of the armrest, so hard she had been gripping it! What awaited her on setting foot inside the classrooms? And the teachers? What would they have to say? They were sure to make some kind of gushing remark about how good it was to have her back - and then use her as an example to discuss the ills of bullying within modern society. If that were to happen Jemmiah thought she would just about die of shame, for there would not be a single person in the class whose eyes were not upon her.
And to start with that was precisely what happened. Everyone whispered and nudged one another…Ms Vram became tongue tied and did not seem to know what to say…and so to begin with Jemmy decided to take things slowly by staying in class during break, looking around the empty classroom with it's equally vacant desks and chairs. Much to Jemmiah's satisfaction, Sophie's chair was the emptiest of the lot!
However, Qui-Gon's much touted lesson on not assuming things before the fact proved yet again to be spot on, and for once Jemmiah was perfectly relieved it was so. During the course of the day there was not one single child - boy or girl - who did not come forward at some point to make their peace or proclaim their profound sorrow at having behaved so terribly to Jemmiah. It was all Sophie's fault, they said; she was the ringleader and they were all glad she was gone. They were only sorry that it had taken something so horrible for her to be sent away. Jemmiah could have screamed with delight.
Could have.
But there was a small part of her that remained strangely deaf to their pleas for forgiveness. Why then, if they were so very sorry for what they had done, had so many of them taken such pleasure in kicking her about the gutters as if she were a boloball? And what was to stop them from doing it again? Distrust had become second nature to Jemmy, so much so that there wasn't a single one amongst her attackers that she didn't eye with downright distrust. Whilst she smiled and nodded and accepted their gushing apologies the Corellian was left to reflect on the fickleness of people who would turn and bend in the wind if it suited their purposes. But would she have been any different? When faced with the likes of Merdan she'd kept her head down low so as to avoid getting it shot off. She'd bowed and scraped to Keleskladt…debased herself for Levinstowe - all to stay alive. Perhaps she could just about understand why they'd all striven so hard to stay out of Sophie's bad books.
But did she want weak friends? Or was it better to have friends whatever their faults?
In the end Jemmiah accepted their offers of friendship hoping that in time she would get to know them well enough so she might erase their checkered history from her mind. Besides, by going out of their way to ask forgiveness they had given her a certain amount of power…a hold over them. They wanted something from her that only she could bestow. And as Obi-Wan often used to say, forgiveness was the sweetest form of revenge!
No Sophie! That was what she had to remember no matter what happened in the coming weeks. THAT was what would keep her going when things got her down. If she were to spend the rest of her life wondering if she'd ever achieved anything worthwhile Jemmy could always think of Sophie, and the time she'd learned to stand up to a bully no less aggressive than Levinstowe…no less sinister than Merdan.
And something interesting had come of her first day back: a new school project!
In order to get a good idea of how the big, bad galaxy operated outside of the narrow world of the schoolroom, the children of Jemmiah's class had been asked to interview somebody in a professional capacity. Of course most of the kids would go home and interview their workaholic parents, but as Jemmy was not in possession of parents (and with her stand-in father figure unavailable) the Corellian was forced to look elsewhere. There had been Darlena, who worked 'professionally' on the corner of 100139-B sub block 367…but Ms Vram might very well have some kind of nervous attack if Jemmy interviewed a call girl. Jemmiah had befriended the young woman on one of the occasions Sal-Fina had been kind enough to throw her out her apartment: she'd even bought her a Nerf burger! But there remained the worrying thought of the education board contacting Evla demanding to know how she associated with 'loose women', and so Jemmy had to think again.
And so Jemmiah's thoughts had turned to the wonderful, amazing An-Paj, super-healer! A man to whom she owed everything, including her continued existence, and whose incredible sense of humor nearly always managed to provoke a smile even in the most trying of circumstances. He had those amazing antennae that Jemmiah coveted so enviously every time she saw them! Everything about An-Paj was so different from anyone she'd ever met before. Skilled, sensitive and utterly professional to the nth degree, who could possibly be better a better subject for an interview? Besides, a man who was married six times all at once just HAD to be worth studying!
Not to mention the fact that he turned the most fetching shade of purple when embarrassed! Clearly this was an aspect Jemmiah had to work on in the course of her interview.
Now, if only she could get him to say yes…
*******
"She wants to interview me!" An-Paj gaped unashamedly at the flimsy note Jemmiah had left for him begging for an interview. It seemed on the face of it a reasonable request, admittedly one that had come right out of the blue, but there was something rather daunting in the prospect of being cross-questioned and interrogated by a ten year old child - especially one that was so artful and knowing as Jemmiah. "I mean, this is extremely flattering to say the least but I'm not sure if I should…"
"Why master?" Simeon stood behind him, raising himself on his tiptoes so that he might read Jemmiah's letter for himself. "There doesn't seem anything tricky about it…look, it says she wants to interview you for her school project."
An-Paj nodded hesitantly, the force assailing him with a slight warning tingle. The letter was perfectly clear: on the face of it there didn't seem to be any reason to turn down the child's request but there was that tiny nagging doubt at the back of his mind…
"I don't know." He scanned the words once again as if seeking some hidden, crooked meaning. "I mean, I don't want to give a bad impression…"
"Master," Simeon pretended outright shock, "how could YOU give a bad impression?"
"Padawan, I have a duty to uphold as a healer and above all as a Jedi. Now," he shrugged slightly, "I'm not saying that my words would be twisted or deliberately misunderstood…but I have to think how a bad interview might reflect badly on the jedi order."
Simeon screwed up his face so that his dark brows appeared to meet in the middle of his forehead.
"Master, with all respect this is an interview for a school project, not the Coruscant News at ten! A bad interview is hardly going to be broadcast on the Holonet for all to see! I think you are quite safe…and she's only a girl! How devious can she be?"
"Simeon, you don't know the female of the species." An-Paj's antennae quirked knowledgeably upwards. "They have skills that we mere mortal males can never truly comprehend. And whilst I hesitate to use the word 'devious' I am perfectly happy to admit to a certain degree of apprehension."
"Oh, master." Simeon sighed right down to his boots. "She's a little girl! And she thinks very highly of you! Imagine, she's got no Master Jinn to interview. She's got no parents to ask. She could have gone to Master Sovalla but she chose you! Doesn't that say something?"
"It says she's got an ulterior motive." An-Paj thought furiously to himself, folding the little note away into his pocket. "I'll have to give this some thought when I get home."
"She's got no ulterior motive!" Simeon laughed.
Pause.
"Unless she just wants to ask about your wives."
"Pardon?" An-Paj's eyes snapped wide open. "What do you mean?"
"Well, you know." Simeon grinned, sliding his thumbs casually into the sides of his tunic belt. "Six wives all at once. Unusual for a Jedi. Come to think of it, unusual for most men! That sort of thing can be fascinating for a girl, I'm sure."
An-Paj felt the color threatening to rush to his cheeks. He wasn't too sure he wanted to know what his padawan was referring to, but knowing Simeon his over-active imagination was playing tricks on him - or he was trying to wind him up just a little. The boy was right: what could go wrong? He was seeing problems that didn't exist.
"She probably thinks you're exotic." Simeon added, placing his palms together above his head in a pyramid shape and wiggling back and forth like a Huttese belly dancer. "You know, with the white hair and the antennae…"
Now he KNEW the boy was winding him up.
"Very well." An-Paj gave a gentle groan, wondering what he had just resigned himself to. "I'll speak to the child. But I'm telling you, if anything goes wrong…"
"Cleaning the freshers?" guessed Simeon.
