	TITLE: "A Rivalry Renewed" Characters: Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Anakin(same age, both almost 18), Quinlan Vos, Xanatos Crion time period: JA Synopsis: Obi-Wan and his master return to the temple after almost five years away on missions trumped up by Yoda while Anakin was trained by Vos and his real master, Xanatos. Last time together neither Obi-Wan or Anakin could stand the other and were rivalries for Master Jinn's attention. Will it still be that way now????? At the bottom of this post will be the first sequel addy if you would like to read it. “Paper, Rock, Scissors.” ##################### Padawan Kenobi walked the expanse of the long Jedi temple hall from the landing port to the housing section for masters and apprentices. Obi-Wan Kenobi couldn’t help but notice the stares and whispers of padawans, most of them of the female persuasion, as they watched him "swagger" down the hall. This confident good looking sleepy-eyed apprentice was not the little insecure apprentice that left the temple a little less than five years ago. This Kenobi tried to hide his smile as some more brazen and older female apprentices tried to make eye contact with him. He stuck his hands in his sleeves, an intentional mimic of his master in every way shape and form. He and his master, Qui-Gon Jinn had only made infrequent stops at the temple with Obi-Wan doing most of his studies via computer. Now Yoda felt it was time to return for some highly extension studies before Obi-Wan was graduated to senior padawan on his eighteenth birthday. Obi-Wan always suspected they were kept away from the temple because of the “Chosen One”, Anakin Skywalker and earlier in the first of the five years, he harbored negatives thought for Anakin for their continual mission stasis. However Padawan Kenobi was past any negative feelings, any feelings really, for Anakin. Yoda was always wiser than most Jedi masters when it came to the young and their problems. He understood that deep down behind Ani and Obi’s façade of serenity and control, indicative of all Jedi apprentices, lay children, mere children with insecurities equal or sometimes more mammoth than the everyday normal child with a real childhood.. Yoda also wisely knew old rivalries died hard and adolescent disagreements mended themselves with only time and separation. That is why Jinn and Kenobi were away so long. Qui-Gon knew it for fact, Obi-Wan only suspected it, because it was never discussed with him. Obi-Wan smiled and shook his head as if to shake off his thoughts. He wasn’t sure if the humor in his thoughts came from the little girls following his every move with their eyes, though trying to remain unnoticed, or if the humor originated from the thought of Yoda and the contriving ways he had come up with to keep Obi-Wan and Anakin separated. Well he can’t find a way now. I have to finish my advanced studies. Master Yoda realizes that. I am mature enough to handle anything Anakin can dish out and besides Master and I are more connected than ever with our bond and our understanding and respect for each other. I probably won’t see too much of the “Chosen One” anyway. Master Jinn had mentioned to Obi-Wan that Padawan Skywalker had been given a job as personal page to Senator Palpatine. Even he thought it out of the ordinary being gone from his master every day, but Master Jinn was actually angry about it. That was one thing that worried Obi deep down. His master seemed so preoccupied with Anakin’s "summer job" as Yoda referred to it. . But hey maybe it will keep the brat out of my hair. Bant said he is like the idol in the temple. Maybe I will have a little time to mark my territory around here. Obi-Wan stopped in front of a large pane window and looked at himself. If you are going to keep those padawans eyeing you Kenobi, you need a shave and a hair trim, maybe even a new crisp Jedi tunic. Master said it will be another year before I ever have to shave my “peach fuss” as he calls it, but I beg to differ. I am going to shave and freshen up before I let these little “perky” padawan chicks see me again. Obi-Wan looked over at two older padawan females closer to his age. The pink hue that formed on their “baby-fat” cheeks gave him little leeway to imagine what they were thinking. Maybe I can shake Ani's position up a little, bring him down off the pedestal Bant said everyone has put him on. Yes, Obi-Wan was guilty of a little vainness. How could he not? He was complimented on every mission he had been on. Not just because of his Jedi abilities but of his masculine good looks. He knew he would never be as tall as his master but like Master Jinn said his height matched him well and did not diminish his attractiveness or his above the norm abilities as a Jedi apprentice. Obi-Wan rounded the corner just then. There on the door was the plaque that read Jinn/Kenobi. Obi-wan took a few moments to let the words sink in. Yes, they had come a long way in the last five years as master and apprentice. A more serious side of Obi-Wan Kenobi took over. He rubbed t his fingertips gently over the indentions of the letters. They seem to mean so much more than they did last time he was here for only a couple of days. Let’s see that was over a year ago and for only two nights. Now I will see to it that not Anakin Skywalker or anything else comes between Master Jinn and I again. Never will I allow it to happen, NEVER The old nagging fear hopped back into his head. He hadn’t let the break with he and his master happen the last time. He would have to blame Qui-Gon for that and although he thought all things were forgotten and forgiven, he felt a twinge of anger when he thought of how easily Qui-Gon left him for Anakin once. It took Quinlan Vos, Jinn’s first apprentice to make Jinn see straight last time, when it came to his pad wan, Obi-Wan. Obi put all his worry out of his mind with the thought of Vos, his old friend and guardian. They kept in constant contact with letters, holovids, and communiqué over the computer. Vos never said anything about Anakin and Obi-Wan liked it that way. He certainly never questioned Vos about his tenure as overseer to both Xanatos and his apprentice Anakin. Yes he is still a friend of mine and I trust him as much as I trust my beloved Yoda. Maybe this return trip can be fun even with my intense studying required. Maybe I can give little Anakin Skywalker, the “Chosen One” a run for his money and bump him off the pedestal everyone around here has put him on, according to Bant. Yes, Ani needs a challenge in Jedi training and with the girls. I plan to be the one to meet his challenge in both!!!! Peace ewen Here is the prequel to this story. 	Master Jinn paced back and forth in front of his former master’s desk. Yoda would turn his head, twitch his ears, and follow with his eyes his former apprentice, Qui-Gon Jinn as he paced. Once in awhile Yoda would roll those eyes in an exaggerated way but only if Qui-Gon peered down at him. “This is ridiculous, unheard of, and just plan out of normal procedure. Quinlan and Xanatos both here at the temple or pulling little made up missions on Coruscant while Anakin is left alone with one of the most diabolically dishonest senators seated on the republic bench.” “Tsk tsk Padawan, unwise it is undue criticism of a senator. Some say Palpatine one day the chancellor he will be. Pass judgment on him, especially unfounded judgment on him wrong and dangerous it could be.” Qui-Gon stopped pacing right in front of Master Yoda. “See, see, you have proven my point right there with your statement.” “Prove what have I young one?” Being called young one by his old master whose age was a little over eight hundred years always elicited a smile from Master Jinn, no matter what mood he was in. This time was no different. “Alright Master Yoda, you have cracked my outer shell as you always do when you call me young one. Tell me pray tell what is you fear about the man? You see something or as I do feel something evil around him. Tell me the truth.” “Admit to nothing I will. However, know this I do padawan mine. Here less than half hour you have been and Anakin your main concern again. Like it I do not. Mention my Obi-Wan not once have you. Take it I do return with him you did?” “Now who is being ridiculous? Wait… not me, you are. Of course I brought Obi-Wan home with me. What did you think I did with him? Oh I see through you. You meant to bring home a point and it was done quite obnoxiously. Yes Master, he is here at the temple and no, I don’t plan to train Anakin in favor of Obi-Wan.” “Glad to know that I do. Throw him away you will not. Deal with me you will.” “I thought favoritism wasn’t allowed among masters. You favor Obi-Wan over everyone maybe even me.” “Could be right about that Qui-Gon Jinn, could be right in deed. Foresee great destiny for my grand padawan, destiny bigger maybe than the “Chosen One‘s“. Masters here flock to him. “See something about him I do just as see through Palpatine.” “Ah, so I am right you do have a bad feeling from the force about Palpatine. I knew it. I just knew it. I thought I felt a brush of evil from Anakin when I opened up to him, found out what he was truly like but I thought through Vos’ reports to me it had greatly diminished. “Humph…. value Vos’ opinion I do. More so than I do your other padawan, Crion. Trouble though with his words, not his truthfulness. Is it greatly reduced as Quinlan says, or possibly is it covered better than he evens knows?” “What is meant by that Master? You think Anakin still harbors the dark feelings he possessed when Sidious wanted him? No, you have to be wrong. Vos wouldn’t be fooled by an appearance of good, he would know the difference.” “Right I hope you are padawan mine. Right I hope you are.” #################### Jinn let his finger of his right hand trace the ornately designed wall of the master/apprentice section of the temple. It was not unusual for the padawans of that section to pick designs to paint on the walls during their stay. This time while Obi-Wan and he had been away, someone had come up with the idea of elaborate drawings of an era long since gone; the Egyptians from earth. Sphinx loomed large on some sections and pyramids, desert landscapes, and even a sarcophagus of a pharaoh was painted very intricately on the what would be bland walls of white. Jinn couldn’t help but notice them throughout the hall. Does add color and animation to these old halls. I have walked them with one apprentice or another for over twenty years and this is the best scenery painted I have ever seen. Qui-Gon felt much the way Obi-Wan had when he found himself in front of their apartment door. A burst of pride swelled in him at the plague on the door. Jinn/Kenobi meant so much more than it had just a few years ago. He silently cursed himself for the rough road they went through and for what his betrayal of Obi-Wan had cost them Master Jinn personally blamed himself for the extended stays away from the temple. Obi-Wan hardly had time to be a child because of me and Yoda’ insistence that Anakin and he stay as far away from each other as they possibly could until Anakin learned more of the Jedi ways. Now…. now he is about to become a senior padawan after his tests are completed and hasn’t had any time with his friends. After this we will be back out on missions that will can only take us further away for longer periods and possibly be much more dangerous. What we have had of late have been cushiony mission overseeing weddings sometimes a real spat but other than that. Qui-Gon let go of all the negative thoughts as soon as he palmed opened the door to he and Obi’s home. There on the couch sat a squeaky clean apprentice, fresh out of the shower, still dripping wet, with a towel snuggly secured around his waist. His newly trimmed spiked was hair still damp. Qui-Gon noticed with a smile that the boy had indeed taken up a razor to his face and his peach fuss on it; something he had threatened to do in the last few months. “Well you have finally followed through with your threat or should I say promise?” Jinn tousled the boy’s still damp spiked ginger colored hair atop Obi's head and then let his hand trail down the right side of the smooth clean shaven side of Obi-Wan’s face. Obi tried to dodge the large callous hand but to no avail. “O.K. make you jokes about my peach fuss and be done with it. I saw a couple of very cute padawans eyeing me. I have to look my best don’t I? I am not seen very much around here. In fact, Bant says I have acquired a hero stasis of sorts. Never mind that it is inherited from you and your bigger than life presence.” “Oh the compliments are flying. Good looking female padawans you say? The padawans must have changed since I was an apprentice.” “You mean back in the ancient days? Yes master, they have changed considerably since then I would think.” Jinn flopped down beside his apprentice. “In my day they wore braces had freckles and where there weren’t freckles, pimples sprouted or worse yet both in the same spot.” Jinn crossed his arms together and leaned back against them to rest his head. He stretched his long legs out in front of him. “Changed indeed? I suppose that means I lose you tonight to the padawan rec room and a bunch of awestruck glaring females?” “I hope so. I mean if that is alright?” Jinn raised himself back up slapped his apprentice on his bare back and not one too softly and let out a thunderous laugh. “Yes Obi-Wan, if you can find the energy to get up and get dressed unless you planned to sidestep the primaries and go dressed in the bath towel?” Obi-Wan faced turned red and when he realized he was still in the large bath towel and hadn’t even dressed. “Aye… well of course I just forgot…” “Forgot to dress? Well that certainly would be convenient for you and a pleasure for the female padawans’ eyes and imagination. I see that new Jedi tunic over there. Already been to the commissary?” “No… yes. I had it sent up. That was aright wasn’t it?” Obi-Wan sputtered the words still amazed at the fact that he hadn’t even noticed he still had his towel wrapped around him. “Oh its fine. Now go put it to use and get dressed. A quick last meal and the evening is yours. I have some things I want to do.” As Obi-Wan left to dress Jinn felt a hint of despair or sadness along their shared bond. Obi was worried about what the business Jinn had to do that was so important he wouldn’t spend this evening with his friends like Obi planned. Padawan Kenobi’s thoughts instantly went to the “Chosen One” . That is probably the important business he has at hand Anakin Skywalker. ####Senate chambers ##### Anakin Skywalker stood silent in front of his temporary boss” Senator Palpatine. He shifted h is weight nervously back and forth from one foot then the other. “Well Senator have you decided? Can I go stay the weekend with my master?” “I did have same work that needed done this weekend though you have excelled in the jobs I have given you the last few days.” Anakin blushed as a smile spread over his face, from the compliment. Praise was always appreciated by the young apprentice soon-to-be senior apprentice. “ Thank you sir. I always try to do my best.” “Miss your master that much do you or it is that rogue Jedi Vos you’d be wanting to spend your time with?” “Oh no… well yes.. and no. I miss both of them and would like to visit the temple. However if that was the only reason Vos or my master, I wouldn’t need to see them the entire weekend. I mean well you know I see Master Crion or Knight Vos almost every other day here at the senate hall. No, Master Jinn and his apprentice just arrived for an extended stay at the temple.” “So you wish to spend quality time with your old friend Kenobi?” Palpatine wasn’t to know too much Jedi business that he would know how well Ani and Obi didn’t get along. But since he knew them when he spent time with them as Sidious, he knew too much, much more than he could allow Anakin to know he knew. “No sir, Kenobi is not my friend but I would like to see Master Jinn. You know he is the one who resuced me when I was a slave. He brought me to the temple to be trained." “Aye yes, seems I do remember something about that. I mean he is the one who found you. Well yes by all means go back to the temple spend the weekend. In fact, stay until Monday evening late. I will send my hover car to pick you wup. If you can be ready in the next half hour, I will also have my driver deliver you to the temple doorstep. Can’t have you miss welcoming home you rescuer now can we?. I owe Master Jinn a great deal of gratitude for finding such a gem like you.” A sinister smile formed on Palpatine’s face. One that went unnoticed by Anakin because he was too busy basking in the compliments supplied by the dark lord now assumed to be the senator, soon-to-be chancellor. If only Anakin knew, better yet if only the Jedi, Jinn, Xani, Vos, and Yoda knew with certainly what a truly evil one Palpatine was.. Master Yoda only suspected…….. ################## Last meal over, instructions given as to what time to be home, and Obi-Wan had his hand on the doorknob saying his last good evening to his master when their door bell singled someone on the other side. Obi hoped it would be Vos since he now looked his best. He hurriedly and excitedly opened the door to find Anakin Skywalker Obi-Wan tore from the room without even a hello to the other apprentice. Jinn suspected what Obi-Wan wrongly thought, that he had this visit planned and that that was the only reason Obi's master was in such a good mood. He wanted to rid himself of his apprentice for a visit with Anakin. Jinn’s suspicions were not unfounded. Qui-Gon could feel through their bond the familiar flame of jealously and hard feelings Obi-Wan once had for Anakin and that Master Jinn thought were all but dissipated. Surely the boy knows he would not ever be replaced again. Our bond is strong and I thought our thrust for each other stronger. Jinn didn’t have time to pull Obi to the side and voice those very sentiments. His padawan was out the door too quick for anything to be said or done.. Yes, Yoda had been right. Rivalries and jealousies of the adolescent young were hard to get past. Had he been there to witness his grand padawan’s disgust over Anakin’s visit, he might have said that in Obi’s case, it wasimpossibly hard. Obi-Wan had his own thoughts and they were not about the strength of their bond or how he should know Master Jinn would never toss him to the side again. No, they were angrier thoughts. Master wanted me out of there so he could visit with his precious “Chosen One“. Well there I have given him what he wanted and maybe then some. Maybe I won’t return at midnight like my master instructed. Maybe I will be the one to decide what time I come home, or for that matter, if I do.. PEACE ewen Here is the prequel to this story. 	I probably won’t see too much of the “Chosen One” anyway. Something tells me you're wrong, Obi-Wan. “I thought favoritism wasn’t allowed among masters. Why do all the best characters die? At least Frodo lives in the gray havens.

	I like the relationship between Qui-Gon and Yoda. I agree with the others about Qui-Gon suspecting Palpatine. Yoda is being as elusive as always. Qui-Gon sounds level headed this time. Obi’s still jealous of Anakin and it’s building, somehow I think the babe hunt is not going to go well. Obi-Wan is setting himself up for trouble. I am looking forward to him finding it. Serves the boy right. I can be such an instigator. EDIT: what I doing checking on this at this time... smack that boy! -----signature----- Is someone calling me? I hear my name! 	Qui-Gon stepped outside of his flat and stared down the hall. Obi-Wan left so fast that he didn’t even have time to call out to him, stop him, assure him if he had too; nothing was amiss just because Anakin stopped by for an unannounced visit. Like magic the boy disappeared around the corner faster than was normal even for Obi to get away from home to party. Master Jinn only stepped back into the apartment when Anakin spoke and drew his attention away from the empty hallway. “Master Jinn, please forgive me if I have interrupted something between you and your apprentice. I certainly didn’t mean to intrude.” Qui-Gon barely glanced at the other apprentice. Yes, he did have concern over Padawan Skywalker being left in Palpatine’s tutelage alone, without his master, but it was nothing like the concern he had for his apprentice who had just hurriedly left with what Qui-Gon felt was the wrong impression of Anakin’s visit. Ani’s visit was not preplanned, but I know Obi thinks that. His mumblings to Anakin not to worry and come in were barely audible but Anakin paid no attention to Jinn‘s overtly casual salutations to him. Padawan Ani was under a wrong assumption as well. He assumed that with a little time spent with Master Jinn he would be back in his good graces just as before. After all, it has been five years and I know Knight Vos and my master have sent him glowing reports of me. How can he not help but become interested in my training again. He found me and I am the “Chosen One”. Every master here thinks I am top padawan. I certainly hope Kenobi doesn’t think to come back and uproot me. He can’t, I won’t allow it. Anyway, when the other masters find out he still acts like a jealous little baby as I portrayed him as when he and Master Jinn were sent away, no one, not even the apprentices will want to have anything to do with him. ############## Garen, one of Obi’s best friends, next to Bant, saw Obi-Wan come through the double swinging doors of the Padawan recreation area before Bant saw him. He rushed to Obi-Wan’s side. Yes of course he was anxious to see his friend but there was another reason for his haste to get to Obi-Wan and to stay glued to him all evening. He and Bant had discussed in length before Obi-Wan’s return to the temple how they would have to break it to Obi-Wan gently about the gossip about him and his master. Padawans and their masters alike had been very cautious to keep it under wraps from the council members or at least a few of them that did not have apprentices. Masters never mentioned Obi’s situation but the apprentices did. Anakin, along with the help of his master, Xanatos let it be assumed that the missions Obi-Wan and his master were always on to take them far away from Coruscant and the temple was because of Obi-Wan’s missteps and not Anakin’s. If Vos knew of the gossip it was never brought up or corrected. Bant and Garen were never really sure why Obi had to be away from the temple so much but they did not believe for a moment it was Obi’s fault. Yes, they knew that Kenobi and Skywalker didn’t see eye to eye and it was because of the rivalry for Obi’s master’s attention. Bant wanted to believe with all her heart Anakin caused all the problems. Garen as well steadfastly disavowed Anakin’s claim that Kenobi was the trouble maker and had to be sent way. As time passed and the memory of Kenobi by padawans his age was eroded away, the padwans, in particular the younger generation, just out of the initiate’s ward began to believe Anakin over Bant and Garen’s rapidly failing insistence that it had to be Anakin’s fault, that he did something in some way required the two to be separated and not the other way around as Skywalker insisted it was. However, after five years and not a bad mark on Skywalker's record, his outward friendliness to all, and his impeccable Jedi skills in all things from academic to mastering the art of defense with the saber, most chose to believe it was the apprentice to Qui-Gon Jinn who was the less than dutiful padawan and had to be sent way. #########in the rec room########### At first seeing and being with his two best friends, Bant and Garen Obi-Wan forgot the problem he thought he had at home with Anakin visiting his master. He forgot and enjoyed his time with his friends until he noticed they kept him away from other padawans when he tried to make a one-on-one conversation with them. Their determination to keep their friend, Obi-Wan to themselves began to irritate and eventually anger the eighteen year old apprentice. As the evening continued into the late hours, almost the hour to return home Obi-Wan became increasingly disgruntled with his friends. Neither Bant nor Garen introduced him to some padawans Obi-Wan didn’t know. What made it even worse than the ones who had never met Obi-Wan seemed cautious almost curt when around him. They made small talk when Obi tried to interject himself in a conversation of several padawans but as soon as Obi started talking they would break up their little gathering and move as far away from the new apprentice as they could. If they seemed interested in speaking with him, Bant and Garen would take Obi-Wan away from the group. Obi-Wan resented being treated like the new kid on the block but even some that knew him didn’t seem to be interested in reacquainting themselves with him. There were a few he remembered from the crèche and initiate days that Obi felt wanted to talk to him, had something they wanted to say, but then again Garen and Bant were always there to stop any conversation Obi-Wan tried to strike up. Obi-Wan noticed a very good looking humanoid apprentice maybe nineteen of age or so and she did seem to be interested in him, very interested Obi thought. Nevertheless, as soon as she made any attempt to make her way to him and start a conversation, Bant would hook her arm through of his and Garen would take the other and steer him away. After the fourth time, Obi knew that there had to be a reason for them wanting him to stay away from “Benet” as he eventually found out her name and they seemed too comfortable with the others not speaking with Obi as well. When Benet started to strike up a conversation and Bant tried to grab Obi-Wan away, the returned Jedi apprentice had had enough. “Stop it, Bant, Garen; if you will excuse me, the both of you I think I very much would like to get to know this very pretty apprentice, Benet isn’t it…..? Care for a drink?” Benet’s ebony lashes batted twice and she flashed a smile that made Obi-Wan grow weak in the knees and more importantly made the smitten padawan forget everything and everyone around him. All problems and that it was only fifteen minutes away from his set curfew, set my his master, Qui-Gon Jinn, flew out of his mind with the vision of beauty before him. “Please Padawan Kenobi; Obi-Wan if I may call you that, I would like some of that spiced qualla fruit juice if you don’t mind.” When Obi-Wan turned to fetch the drink, Benet cast a look to Bant and Garen that resembled throwing daggers. There was a smirk that continued to decorate her olive-skinned face that Obi mistook for a smile. Bant and Garen knew differently though because they knew who she was and the potential problems she could cause for Obi-Wan. Garen grabbed Bant by the arm. “Come on we will be late for curfew Bant, Let Kenobi do what he wants.” Garen was a little P.O.’d at his friend and didn’t care at that moment if he did get into trouble with his master or with the girl who was very satisfied that Obi was paying attention to her. Obi-Wan nearly bounced over to where the drinks were. Complimented and flattered that such a beautiful girl would like to talk with him, especially since no one had wanted to even say hi, except for Garen and Bant. There was just a flash of shame for the way he dismissed his friends but after all they had, he thought, been a little callous to him in the way they seemed to not want anyone else to speak to him. ############## In the hall on their return to their respective masters Bant to Master Tahl, Garen to Master Windu, they argued back and forth. “I just don’t want Obi hurt or to get into trouble, I mean more trouble than he already has.” “He has struck of a conversation with Palpatine’s niece and Padawan Skywalker’s girlfriend, it is within ten minutes of his curfew as it is ours, and he seems to be in one heck of a grumbling mood, how can he avoid problems, Bant? We tried to guide him clear of her. But oh no Kenobi wanted to go after the prettiest girl there.” Bant sent him a dirty look. “Well you know, next to you.” “Yeah, sure, right, but you do have a point. There can be nothing good out of her wanting to meet with Obi. She has to have something sinister planned or worse yet her boyfriend Anakin had it planned for her. Too bad we are the only two around here that seems to see through Anakin’s syrupy goodness. And Benet, well I think she makes a perfect match for little Ani because she is just as stuck up and conniving as he is. But you are right. I suppose we will have to let Obi learn the hard way. I just hope he doesn’t find too much trouble…… as well. “Look Bant, it is ten till midnight. I am not going to be late and get in trouble. Kenobi has been acting really weird tonight. I mean he said everything was right with his master, so what is up? Maybe the gossip mongers are right. Maybe the problem with the separation wasn’t from Anakin, though I personally don’t care for him. Maybe it was Kenobi’s fault. I don’t plan to get in trouble with my master, Master Windu for him or anyone, even you. He is a big boy now. Let him handle things, ALL things that comes his way, even if it is trouble over Anakin’s girlfriend,Palpatine's FAVORITE niece!!!!!!!
