Hi everyone, I'm new here and this is my first post on the TF.N site ever! I've been reading and addicted to J W Titus's Episode III novel on the 3SA forum. On there, there have been a number of requests for Titus to write a novel describing the back story of Senator Palpatine. I think he's a bit busy with his current novel so I felt inspired to have a go at writing my own novel, dealing with this topic.

I'm a British Star Wars fanatic and have read most of the EU novels (except the NJO which I didn't enjoy), and the Dark Horse graphic novels, which have informed my conception of the novel. So any errors, etc. let me know but be kind! I haven't read much of the fan fiction on here, surprisingly perhaps, so if something does crop up - any similarity or whatever - it really is accidental so please let me know and I'll change the text accordingly.

I'm aiming to write a full length novel and will post chapters as and when they're completed. Obviously this will take a while.

I'm actually starting with Palpatine's parents as there are obviously plenty of people involved in this story apart from the man himself and their tale needs to be told as well. So wait patiently and Palpatine will appear! The novel will describe the period from the events leading to his birth, his training as a Sith apprentice, right up to the deal he makes with the Trade Federation.

So I hope you enjoy it. Let me know what you think! Please be kind as it's the first fictional writing I've done since I was at school. Any suggestions for improvement cheerfully accepted!

PROLOGUE

“No!”. Too far away to act, all Roshna Palpat could do was scream out a warning but it was too late. In the middle of the battlefield she saw him fall, slain in one swift stroke by the Dark Jedi they had been sent to capture. Her life, her plans, her very meaning was all gone in less than a second. All reason gone, she felt her anguish and heartbreak swell through her body, a wave of pain too strong to resist or control. The Force boiled and flowed through her, something she could not identify within it took control of her, possessing her. Staring at the Dark Jedi, oblivious to the chaos around her, she raised her hand towards him. Unable to contain the strange energy within her, she directed all of her pain towards its cause. Unsuspecting of the assault and unable to prepare for the blow, the Dark Jedi was thrown hard against the side of her ship, the sickening crack of broken bones ringing out across the hangar. Pinning him against the ship, the wall of Force pressed hard against him. Unable to stop herself, unable to control her actions, desperately wanting to be free of her pain she continued to direct it against him. Slowly but surely, the Dark Jedi unable to resist the pressure, his bones cracking, his body being flattened, his organs failing, the Dark Jedi died … No longer contained within a physical body, the Dark Side energies exploded, taking the ship, the hangar wall and her partner’s body with it. As the explosion ripped out to consume everything within its path, the pain in her also reached to its deafening crescendo, supplemented by the impact of shards of debris from the blast, growing to the point where she could stand it no longer and thought she would explode. She opened her mouth to scream … and woke.

PART I: THE FALL OF ROSHNA PALPAT

CHAPTER ONE

It was a bright morning and Roshna Palpat stood before the Jedi Council in the circular Council Chamber, far above most of Coruscant. A tall, slender Alderaanian Jedi of 30 standard years, Roshna was a striking woman. Long red hair fell to her waist in plaits, in the Alderaanian style, her vivid blue eyes swept over the familiar faces of the twelve Masters who sat before her. She was popular in the Jedi Temple, and until her recent return from the confrontation with the Weequay Dark Jedi Dar Rashihi on Ord Mantell, she had been known for her smile, her easy manner and the many humorous stories she told of her travels and experiences during her service in the Jedi Order. She was also a powerful Jedi who, despite her formidable skills in the art of combat, was most fascinated by the past, present and future, and since she had faced the trials and become a Jedi Knight, was often to be found in the Library, or in the company of the Senior Jedi Historian, Kar Brehan. It was he who spoke first.
“Roshna, we are indebted to you for finally defeating Dar Rashihi and I must express our sympathy for the loss of your colleague in that mission, Jedi Master Belo Tarn. You were close friends were you not?”. Kar Brehan, a Zabrakian Jedi spoke gently, sensing Roshna’s loss.
Roshna sighed, “Yes, Master Brehan, we were. We had flown on many missions together, Belo and I. I feel a great loss when I think of him. I find the fourth precept of our code, ‘There is no death, there is only the force” very difficult to come to terms with”. Inside, Roshna shuddered. It was very hard to discuss something so personal and so painful with the whole Council like this.
“You have spent time with the Healers, have you not?” asked Kar Brehan, again in the same, gentle tone.
“Yes. I am very grateful to them for the help they have given me. However, both Master Healer Neehu and I feel that only with time and meditation will I be able to come to terms with … with this”. Roshna’s voice broke and she stopped, not wanting to lose control in front of the watchful eyes of the Council, knowing they would be able to sense her emotions anyway. She felt very exposed and just wanted to run and hide from their gaze.
“Very hard it is, the first time you lose a colleague. Painful indeed, when the bond is close between you. Concerned for you I am, my former Padawan. Sense your sorrow we do. Your mind is not focused as a Jedi’s should be. Time and meditation you need to regain your calm”.
With a ghost of a smile flickering on her face, Roshna turned to face her former Master, Yoda. Of all the Jedi in the Temple, he knew her best and she was grateful for his words.
“Yes Master Yoda. I need time, that is why I have come to you with my request for leave from active duty. I need time to recover …”. Roshna stopped and dipped her head, unable to articulate further her intense desire for calm, to run, to hide from the events on Ord Mantell, where she had lost so much.
“Hmmmm”. Master Yoda closed his eyes, deep in thought. Roshna and the Council waited for him to speak. Though all of the twelve Council members were equal and decisions had to be supported by all of the Council, Master Yoda was an ancient, wise and powerful Jedi, with a powerful gift for divining the future and its possibilities. Although Master Vilier Rekarti was the official Head of the Council, most Jedi knew that decisions were rarely made without his advice or approval. Finally, he spoke.
“A gifted and powerful Jedi you are, Jedi Palpat. For ten years your efforts against the Dark Side Insurgency led by Dar Rashihi have been invaluable. Time, all of us will need, to recover from these terrible years. Minded I am to grant your request, Jedi Palpat. Seen have I, yet more darkness to come”. Yoda’s words, spoken softly and gravely, caused a ripple of surprise to flow across the Chamber. The deep, husky voice of Master Rekarti spoke, “More darkness you have seen, Master Yoda? I understood we that all of Dar Rashihi’s followers had either been captured or killed? I don’t understand”.
“Hard to see, the future is. Forever flowing, turning, changing. No more than an echo of recent events it may be, but I fear the seeds of evil laid by Rashihi will return to grow, though it may not be for many years until we see their appearance. I sense that Jedi Palpat will have a part to play in this, however small. More than that the Force will not reveal to me. Clouded is your future, Jedi Palpat. Hidden. Wise it would be for you to regain your control, to heal and be ready to face what is to come”.
Roshna had looked up sharply at Yoda’s words, stunned by what he had to say. She was dimly aware of the other Council members muttering and turning to study her, their Force probes, touching her mind. Never before had Master Yoda spoken to her about her future.
“I feel we can only wait and be mindful, Master Yoda, if that is the case”. Once again, the husky voice of the Twi’lek Rekarti spoke, more sharply this time. “We will discuss this further. In the meantime …”. Master Rekarti turned to Roshna. “The Council grants your request for leave from active duty for six months, following which we will discuss your progress further. I suggest you spend time meditating on your loss and coming to terms with that, but your focus must be on healing and asking the Force for guidance on the future”.
Roshna nodded, still shocked by Master Yoda’s vision of her destiny. “Thank you Master Retarki. I am grateful to the Council for granting my request”. As Roshna made ready to leave, Master Rekarti spoke once more. “However, my own experiences tell me that it helps to find activity in times such as these. I would not wish you to spend all your time in meditation. A task would allow your mind to heal. Is there something which you wish to do? Instruction, perhaps, or would you prefer something else?”. Master Rekarti spoke these last words with a knowing smile, his lekku twitching to indicate his humour.
Unwillingly, Roshna returned a rueful smile. Her thirst for knowledge of the Jedi’s history was indeed well known within the Order, and her discoveries in the holocrons of the Jedi Archives had unearthed much that was unknown about the origins of the Jedi Order.
“Yes, Master Rekarti, you know me well. With Master Brehan’s permission, I would like to continue my historical studies and would appreciate his guidance to assist me. There is much in the Archive that I haven’t studied as yet”.
“Master Brehan?”. The old Zabrakian Jedi nodded in response to Master Retarki’s unspoken question, smiling as he did so. “It would be a pleasure Roshna”, he said, “come to me tomorrow and we will go through what you need”.
“Very well,” spoke the leader of the Council, “it is decided. We wish you well Jedi Palpat. I look forward to hearing what else you may discover”. Master Retarki smiled, and indicated with a small, waving gesture that the Council session was over. Roshna made the customary reverance and turned and left the Chamber.

CHAPTER TWO

Once in her room in the South Tower of the Temple, Roshna allowed herself to relax. She crossed her simple room, barren of possessions as all were in the Temple, and went to the window and stared unseeing out across the busy skyline of Coruscant. In the distance she vaguely noted the hum of activity around the Galactic Senate. In a corner of her mind she noted the procession of the Chancellor’s entourage down the avenue of the Statues of the Founder Worlds, signalling his arrival. She had received a Senatorial Medal for her services to the Republic, in saving Chancellor Valorum’s life and defeating Dar Rashihi, but the memory was hollow and gave her no pride or satisfaction. Again confronted by the scene of her loss, Roshna’s thoughts drifted away from the city. Deep though Master Yoda’s and the Council’s mental probes had been, she was thankful they had not discovered her only secret, something she and Belo Tarn had successfully kept hidden for a long time. She assumed it was her grief that had kept it hidden though she had feared it would give it away and then she would have lost everything.
The Jedi Code forbade attachments to other people and especially to other Jedi, for good reason. It was feared that should a Jedi become too closely bonded to another, it could cloud their judgement and encourage a Jedi to make rash decisions and act with strong emotion. Such attachments, it was felt, could make a Jedi vulnerable to opponents and Roshna had seen many examples in the Archives where it had led to terrible destruction and loss of life as a result of a Jedi’s feelings. Still, these attachments could never be predicted, nor sometimes could they be resisted, however dedicated a Jedi you were.
Roshna and Master Belo Tarn had been comrades on missions since she had first attained the Rank of Jedi Knight. Since their first charge of hunting down the Corellian pirate gang of Dalla Suul they had been good friends, with an instant rapport. They had had much in common. Both had been born on the planet Alderaan, and had shared the same sense of irreverent humour about life and a fascination with Jedi history. Belo had not been particularly good looking, he was slightly shorter than Roshna, but there had been something indefinable that had drawn her to him. He was a kindred spirit, and the twinkle in his own vivid blue eyes served to draw her closer to him. Over the ten years she had been a Knight, they had endured many hard missions and fought many battles, ending in the war with Dar Rashihi and his Dark Side Insurgency.
It had been a terrible war and had started not long after they had succeeded in capturing Dalla Suul. Dar Rashihi had been a powerful Jedi, a master of the art of lightsaber combat. His skills had matched Master Yoda’s in that respect, which had made it all the more dangerous to confront him. He had left the Order 20 years ago, allegedly dissatisfied with life as a Jedi. He had been something of a renegade and had pushed the Code to its limits. In a tense discussion with the Council, it was said that he felt he could no longer carry out his role as a Jedi and obey the Code as well. So he left, leaving great sadness behind him. He had gone to Ord Mantell and had been acclaimed as a hero. Somewhere, he had fallen to the dark side, it was not known how. What was known was that he had built up an army and attracted other dark siders to his side and made war on the Jedi Order and the Republic, bitter and twisted and full of hate for his former friends. Many Jedi had died and battles had taken place across the Galaxy. Many planets had suffered and been scarred as a result and there had been anger at the Jedi for failing to confront Rashihi earlier and not foreseeing this catastrophe. It had been ten long years of a war of attrition until the final battle took place. Where Roshna had lost Belo …
The challenges and dangers of the war had only served to strengthen the bond between herself and Belo. Closer and closer they became until a year before the final battle against Rahishi, they had crossed the line somewhere and admitted to each other the love they felt. Both of them knew the Code well, and had made promises never to act on their attraction, but it was hard to resist given the time they spent together. The war never allowed them time to rest, to consider, to meditate on their feelings. Roshna remembered their first discussion well. They had been on Utapau, tired and exhausted after their victory against Rashihi’s forces. Belo and herself had been left alone in the rec room of their Dreadnaught, everyone else having gone to rest and recover from the battle.
“I almost thought I’d lost you in that last confrontation, Roshna”, Belo had said. His expression was grave, still covered in the dust of the battle, a wound in his leg covered by a bacta patch. “I’m not sure I could have faced that”. He looked at her, his eyes boring deep into hers. Roshna turned away, not wanting to face the hidden subtext of those words.
“We’ve lost so many people Belo. We have to end this war. And that requires sacrifices”.
Belo was silent, still maintaining eye contact for what felt like an eon before dropping his head and sighing. “We … we have to talk about this Roshna. About us and our partnership”.
“No …”, she had said, but before she could finish Belo interrupted her.
“I can’t deny my feelings any longer. I must express them. We’ve been through so much together, seen so much. My admiration of you has grown more and more with each challenge we’ve faced. I’ve been trying to pretend it’s … professional, but both you and I know it’s not”.
“Belo, we can’t … the Code”. Roshna spoke, a note of pleading in her voice, afraid of what she might hear, afraid of her own feelings for him, afraid of what it might mean for their lives.
“I know the Code as well as you do”, said Belo heavily, “but I know what feelings I have for you and I can no longer keep them hidden. I know you feel the same too, Roshna. We are too close for you to deny that”.
Roshna dropped into a chair and clasped her hands together tightly in her anxiety. Without looking at Belo she said, “No. No I can’t deny it. I’ve felt this way for some time and I know you’ve felt it too. But the consequences …”
“We would have to leave the Order and I know, especially now, in this war, we can’t do that. There’s too much at stake”.
“But what are we going to do Belo? I, I can’t bear it much longer. Are we going to have to part?”. Belo flinched at the pain in her voice. The thought of it was unbearable. He had been at her side through every mission over the last ten years and couldn’t face the thought of not having her there.
“We cannot go to the Council with this Roshna. They have too much to think about. Rashihi must be defeated and we cannot walk away from our part in that. We will have to be strong and try and conquer these feelings”.
“What if we can’t Belo? What will happen to us then? We cannot go against the Code. We are both too much of a Jedi for that”.
“We can give it time. Feelings can pass in time. We must focus on what is important now. We have to confront Rashihi. Once this is over, if we still feel the same …”. At that Belo’s voice had trailed off, not wanting to speak the words, afraid that saying them would make what might happen come true. However, Roshna had spoken for him. “If we still feel the same, then we will face a choice. Go to the Council and explain, and part, never to work together again …”. A tear rolled down Roshna’s face as she stared at Belo, not believing what she was saying.
“Or we both leave the Order and go and make our lives together”. A faint light of hope grew in Belo’s eyes at the prospect.
Roshna spoke, a hint of bitterness in her tone, “The Council will never allow it. We …”
Suddenly a harsh klaxon blared out across the ship. Over the com came Captain Varnus’ voice, panicky and barely under control, “Master Tarn, we are under attack! A dreadnaught has just jumped in-system!”
Tarn swore, “I’m on my way to the bridge Captain. Order the pilots back to their fighters and launch at once. Rashihi must think we’re easy pickings after the battle. Let’s show him he’s wrong Captain” and he looked at Roshna and smiled.
“Yes sir!” Noticeably heartened by Belo’s words, the Captain signed off and in naturally their discussion ended there.
The war had kept them so busy they had not had a chance of discussing their feelings until the night before the last battle on Ord Mantell. Rashihi’s forces had been defeated and the Republic task force had the planet surrounded and was sending its troops planet-side to prepare for ground assault. Belo had been assigned to lead the forces in the assault the next day. Several Jedi were stationed on the ten Dreadnaughts laying siege to the planet. All was quiet. The sensors indicated that Rashihi had withdrawn his remaining troops and armaments to his stronghold in Pardeen on the Southern continent. The battle plan had been simple. The dreadnaughts would lay down covering fire, attempting to knock out the shield emplacements and any major installations. The Jedi would go down to the planet in the first wave and attempt to confront Rashihi in his fortress. No Jedi would be able to defeat him one on one, he was too powerful for that. Success depended on the force of ten Jedi sent to oppose him, Rashihi’s former Master Retarki among them. Such was the seriousness of the task ahead of them. It couldn’t be known whether any of them would survive against such a deadly opponent.
Once again alone, the pair had let their fear of losing one another overcome their restraint and they had thrown caution to the winds and crossed the boundary from colleagues to lovers. They had fallen asleep together until the morning, when without words, unable to talk about what had happened between them, they had silently readied themselves for the confrontation. What happened next, Roshna relived every night in her dreams, or rather nightmares. Sat in her room, an unbroken and unheard chain of speeders passing her window, Roshna buried her head in her hands and cried, waves of grief flowing through her, shaking with the force of it. The outpouring of pain had finally been released and she threw herself on her bunk and let the pain take her where it would, only ending in exhaustion and sleep, dreamless sleep.

CHAPTER THREE

The next day, Master Brehan took her up into the North Tower, into a part of the Temple she had never been before. Despite her grief, Roshna felt intrigued and also excited at the prospect of exploring the resources kept there. Almost every Jedi, even those without much interest in ancient history, had wanted to go up there at some point. She knew she was heading to the rooms known as the Council of First Knowledge, where the most precious secrets and most ancient texts and holocrons of the Order were kept. It was also rumoured that in the Council of First Knowledge were kept Sith artefacts, recovered from the many battles the Order had fought with the Dark Side magicians. Roshna felt a strange thrill of foreboding pass through her as she stepped out of the turbolift with Master Brehan. Only the most Senior Jedi historians and members of the Council were normally allowed up here.
Master Brehan explained, an amused smile on his face at the sight of Roshna’s surprise and anticipation. “I thought this would please you, Roshna. It was felt that you could be trusted with the knowledge held in these chambers. You have demonstrated your tireless work against the dark side and you have already read all that pertains to the origin of the Jedi in the Archives below, haven’t you?”
“I am honoured and very pleased, Kar. I am touched by the Council’s faith in me”. Roshna turned to face Kar Brehan and bowed in acknowledgement.
“There is no need for formalities here. Let me show you around, Roshna”. With that, Kar Brehan told her the entry code and they stepped through the entrance, into an astonishing place. Roshna knew that much knowledge was stored here but had not expected to see what she saw. Rows upon rows of shelving and storage units with transparisteel doors ran along the sides of the five rooms that made up the Council of First Knowledge. The first room contained a multitude of ancient holocrons, all resting on small plinths, each with a datacard relating to its contents. Roshna knew that among them there were incredibly rare and precious cubes, those of Nomi Sunrider and Thon, and she had been told by Kar Brehan that one even dated back to before the Order was formally convened to protect the Republic. She shivered at the thought of working through these precious resources. Room by room, Kar Brehan guided her through the priceless objects they contained. From the Holocron room they came to a chamber containing millennia old manuscripts, dating from before the invention of datacards. Kar explained that most had been copied in holographic form onto datacard to protect the manuscripts and been translated into Basic. From there he led her into a vast hall, full of important historical and archaeological artefacts, early lightsabers, Jedi armour, models of certain ships, even extremely ancient instructional aides. The next room was a dedicated study area. Unusually, no druids were present, or even allowed into the Council of First Knowledge.
“Security and preservation of this resource is our main concern within these walls”, explained Kar. “Here we keep our most precious secrets and artefacts. Do you see those doors over there, Roshna?”. Roshna’s eyes swept towards the entrance to the door to the final chamber, at the other side of the study area. She had a good idea what was kept within there. “In that room, as I imagine you have guessed, are kept all documents and objects relating to the Sith, our greatest enemies over the millennia. Their teachings can bring dark power to even non-force sensitive beings. If these were to be taken from here …” He shuddered at the thought, his lekku twitching in harmony with his shivers. “The story of the Krath should be warning enough for you. Let me show you what we have and I will tell you what you must know of them”. Kar and Roshna stood in front of the locked doors and the Twi’lek began to explain the security measures put in place to guard the forbidden knowledge within.
“The doors are made of lightsaber resistant plasteel containing cortosis ore within them. As you can see, there is no keypad with which to use an entry code. These doors can only be opened using the Force. Within the many cogs contained in the door’s structure there are twelve to be moved precisely in order. Only a skilled Jedi such as yourself would be able to open it, once they knew the correct sequence in which they must be turned. Clear your mind and let me show you what is required”.
Roshna had not realised just how much trust the Council had put in her until this moment. She realised the depth of their trust and in her shock it took her a moment to gather herself and reach out to both Master Brehan and gather the Force to her. Kar Brehan raised his hand and reached out to the locking mechanism contained within the doors. One by one, she saw which of the dials needed to be turned and committed it to memory. Slowly, the doors opened to reveal a small chamber, with just four rows of shelves and three storage units held within. Kar took her elbow and guided her into the chamber. Only once she was inside could she feel the dark energy contained within, silent, subdued but still detectable within the Force, if only faintly. On the shelves to her right, there sat just four holocrons of a type she had never seen before, pyramidal and carved with glyphs she knew must be in the Sith tongue, along with a datapad sat next to each one. Through the transparisteel doors of the storage units, she could see one unit containing several weapons – swords and Sith Lanvaroks, mostly. Another held about half a dozen texts and the final unit contained three amulets and some strange, silvery devices, pyramidal in shape and again covered in Sith inscriptions. Fascinated by the strange, alien objects in the room, she wondered. She had thought the Order held more materiel than this.
A sigh came from Kar Brehan, jolting her out of her reverie. “As you can see there is little left of what we once held. Much of what we had was stolen or destroyed during the Great Sith War, stolen from Ossus or destroyed in Quel-droma’s raid on Coruscant. This fourth holocron has only recently been recovered, from no less a place than the wreckage of Dar Rashihi’s ship on Ord Mantell”.
Roshna felt a jolt run through her. Rashihi had stolen a Sith holocron? Impossible! She turned to Kar but before she could ask him he spoke.
“It was not stolen from here, Roshna. We do not know how he obtained it and the Jedi Council have been worried indeed about its provenance. We do recognise it, however. It was identified by a description given by Master Ood B’nar, from before the Sith War which is on the datapad. It was stolen by Exar Kun from Ossus. We did not recover it from Yavin 4 and had assumed it destroyed in the conflict there”.
“You don’t believe the Sith to be still active somewhere in the Galaxy, do you Kar?” breathed Roshna, horrified at the possible implications.
“No, the Council is convinced they were finally defeated at Rusaan. No further evidence of Sith activity has ever been found, nor have they been sensed. One can only assume it was sold to him by a dealer from the underground. As you know, there is a rare trade in Jedi and Sith artefacts. We try and recover what we can, but …”. Kar shrugged and Roshna shared his frustration. From her studies of the Krath, she knew the dangers of this knowledge but had believed all that was left had been recovered. It was known that the boundaries of the Sith Empire had extended into the Unknown Regions and there were still worlds that had not been explored.
She turned to Kar. “Thank you for the trust you have shown in me in allowing me to study here, Kar. I appreciate your generosity”.
“Thank you my dear, it will be a pleasure to work with you again. I must caution you against using this room too often. The dark side seeks out new followers wherever it goes. We do not study the holocrons themselves as they will only respond to the Sith and dark side adepts and no one here in the Temple has such desire for knowledge as to use the dark side to access it”.
Roshna nodded and spoke gravely, “I understand Master Brehan”.
“Come, my dear, it is time to eat. And then you have a lightsaber class to teach, do you not? You may start your studies tomorrow”. With that, Kar Brehan ushered her out of the small, dark room and closed the door behind them. With an effort, Roshna put the feeling of darkness in the room behind her, unaware that behind the doors, Rashihi’s holocron had glowed for a minute, before once more becoming still.

Hey, thanks for your comments guys. I'm glad you're enjoying it so far. I wasn't sure how people would react to new characters playing their part in a story I'm sure EVERYONE has thought about at some point! happy

I'm hoping to post a chapter or two a week and see how it goes. I hope that's enough for everyone!

More to come later today I think.

Thanks for the praise and encouragement guys. It's sweet music to my ears!

Next chapter for you below ...

CHAPTER FOUR

For the next three months, Roshna applied herself assiduously to her studies, focusing on the Great Schism of 10,000 years ago, the first great confrontation between followers of the light and dark sides of the Force which had led to the formation of the Republic and the compact between it and the Jedi Order. She hoped to write the definitive study and in many of the ancient holocrons she had found much information, some quite startling. Many details of unknown Jedi had come to light, and the stories of skills and abilities that were almost unheard of in the membership of the present Order had fascinated her. Knowing that some would be useful to her in light of Master Yoda’s vision of her future, she had obtained permission to study certain techniques – ancient methods of lightsaber combat to help with her regular instructions to the Padawans as well as patterns of meditation supplementing Master Yoda’s teachings on seeing the future. Once, while in deep meditation, Master Thon’s own holocron had shown her how to project her awareness into the Galaxy, soaring through different star systems, the Force showing her the present only. A kaleidoscopic vision of the Galaxy had shown itself to her, Master Thon’s gruff voice intoning instructions on how to interpret the vision, the shimmering, shifting play of light and voids of darkness. The holocron of Nomi Sunrider had shown Roshna her concept of the Force as a deep ocean, its waves flowing across space, shining rays of light emitting from its depths as well as whirlpools of darkness ready to ensnare unwary voyagers.

Roshna could feel herself changing and growing. The dark void that was Belo’s death was still an unhealed wound that could still inflict pain on her when she was least prepared, but it was starting to recede. The physical effects of her shock, which had taken the form of sickness and nausea to begin with had started to recede, only occasionally surprising her of a morning. Master Healer Neehu had been pleased with her progress and her history studies had been a good suggestion of Master Retarki’s, she felt. It did give her something else to focus on and her need to avoid her grief had spurred her on to work harder and harder. She had avoided the Sith archive until now. Both Master Brehan’s cautions against the danger in there and her studies of the rest of the Council of First Knowledge had served to distract her from it, from the strange feeling she had whenever she considered the room. Sometimes, late at night, it almost felt as if the room had been calling to her, pulling her towards the doors. She had dismissed this as the effects of her being tired from her studies and taken it as a cue to go down to the recreation rooms.

One thing about her physical condition had concerned her and she had spoken to Master Healer Neehu about it. “Master Neehu, thank you for seeing me”. She had sat opposite the insectoid Vedukian Jedi in her bright, airy consulting room in the lower levels of the Temple. There was an absence of technology here, just a small arboretum in one corner which she knew Neehu tended lovingly. Neehu was an old-fashioned Jedi, and although she was familiar with the latest med scanners and healing techniques, she preferred to rely on the Force for diagnosis and treatment. It was reassuring, thought Roshna, and less alien.
“You are welcome any time Roshna”, said Neehu. Her voice was similar to a female humanoid’s, low and calm and full of warmth, the only difference being the odd whirrs and clicks that appeared at random moments.

“How are you feeling?”, she continued, “At our last consultation you said that you were starting to feel better and that your sickness had begun to be less frequent”. Neehu’s four black eyes travelled down Roshna’s body, and Roshna knew she was looking at her through the Force.
“Yes, I am very rarely sick. I think I’m beginning to recover at last. But … it’s difficult to explain, Neehu”. Roshna dropped her eyes, “And a little personal. You know that human females have a fertility cycle which shows once a standard month”.
“Yes, I know that Roshna. Are you having any problems?” inquired the Vedukian.
“My own cycle seems to have changed, to have stopped”. Roshna blushed deep. She knew it was silly to feel so embarrassed and that Neehu was an experienced healer, but even so …
“Do not feel so delicately about it Roshna, it is something that is personal to all of us, but a natural part of our journey in the Force. I can see nothing wrong, though …”. The Vedukian paused.
“What is it?” asked Roshna, a little worried at Neehu’s expression.
“I can see no illness, but it is strange. The Force seems unusually focused in your abdomen. I have not seen anything like it before. It is gathered there, drawing energy into itself. Very unusual. Have you yourself felt anything different?”
“No, not really. But what could have caused the disruption in my cycle?”
“I cannot determine a physical cause, Roshna, so do not be worried on that account. The gathering there of the Force I cannot explain. The only thing I can think of is …” she trailed off … puzzled.
“Please tell me Master Neehu. I have been worried about this”. Roshna wanted an explanation, it was for herself the only thing she couldn’t explain.
As if unwilling to go on, Neehu explained, “Well, in normal human females, there are usually only two causes of a disruption in the fertility cycle. It can be different between individuals, of course. First of all, the most common cause is conception, though obviously that is not a concern with the female members of the Order”, Neehu’s mandibles stretched wide in the Vedukian approximation of a smile.
“Conception” thought Roshna, “Could it be? Control, I must have control …”
“Conception?” she asked Neehu, her voice wavering almost undetectably.
“Most unlikely in your case I am sure”, said Neehu consolingly. “No Roshna. The other cause of disruption is a physical or emotional trauma, which can cause irregularity or even a temporary ceasing of the cycle altogether. With time and recovery, it returns”. Again, Neehu smiled. “There is nothing to worry about, Roshna. The recent loss of your partner Belo Tarn could explain both the sickness and the disruption of your cycle. Do let me know if it continues, as it could indicate a physical problem, which may be undetectable at this stage and may bear further investigation”.

Roshna breathed deeply, fighting for control. “Thank you Master Neehu, you have given me something to consider. I will let you know how things progress”.
“You’re welcome. Take care and may the Force be with you, Roshna”. The Vedukian smiled and stood.
“And with you, Master Neehu”. Roshna stood and bowed her acknowledgement to the alien Jedi and left the Healer’s office.
“Conception …”, thought Roshna, “Surely it can’t be!”. Suddenly, a wave of panic came over her. Needing a quiet place and a source of guidance, Roshna ran to the turbolifts in the Great Hall, and headed towards the North Tower.
