JEDI TALES: THE ORIGIN OF PALPATINE

PART II: DARK KNOWLEDGE

CHAPTER EIGHT

In one smooth motion, Belo sliced open the access hatch to the tunnel that led out of the dark nightmare of the Underground. Just as smoothly, he reattached his lightsaber to his belt, then opened the door, stepped into the tunnel and closed the hatch behind him. It was always safer to assume someone was watching everywhere you went on Coruscant, especially in the Underground, and Belo did not want this communication to be observed. Belo lifted up his right arm and activated his wrist-worn holocomm. He spoke: ‘My Master’, he said.

‘Report, my apprentice’, said Darth Plageuis as he appeared, a shadowy, cowled, 16th size apparition.
‘I have located the bounty hunter Vez in the Southern Underground, not far from the Southern radial expressway. I have observed his office for a while. Neither the Jedi nor the Museum appear to have located him as yet.’
The dark apparition paused to think. ‘Set the Dark Eye probe droid to watch him at all times, especially who he goes and visits’ he said. ‘He will wait until he receives the emissaries from the Jedi and the Museum. Once he has done that, find out what he is selling and instruct the probe droid to follow him to his employer. I wish to know who the seller is. Do not approach him yourself until I instruct you. As soon as you know who the seller is, inform me immediately.’
‘As you command, my Master’, said Belo.

The apparition vanished, closing pleasantries never being a strong point of Lord Plageuis’. Belo stopped to think, then returned to his speeder bike in the walkway outside. He touched a control near the steering column and once again, a hatch slid sideways and out rose the Dark Eye probe droid. Belo entered a few commands into his wrist comm and the droid rose and flew down the walkway, almost immediately entering the shadows and heading for Vez’s rooms. Belo stared after it, contemplating the shadows, watching it disappear into the distance. He would wait for the droid to report and follow it to observe the Museum’s agents and the Jedi. It would only be a matter of time before they arrived. In the meantime …

The thief Hartag, his mind consumed with the thought of acquiring the obviously modified speeder bike he could see in the distance never felt it coming. Creeping up towards it, blaster raised in one hand, he suddenly felt an excruciating pain in his chest. Stopping dead, he looked down to see a long knife jutting out of the centre of his body. His blaster falling out of his hand, he fell to his knees. His eyes clouded over, but he thought he could see a dark shadow approaching and then, agonisingly, a bright red light heading swiftly towards his head, then everything went black.

* * *

‘So what have you got for us this time Vez?’ asked Sana Ahome sardonically.

The two of them stood in Vez’s ‘office’, a dimly lit cubicle with no windows. Not surprisingly, thought Sana, there was very little to see down here in the Southern Underground.

Farn stood just behind her shoulder, protectively, his bulk reassuring in this star-forsaken place.

Vez spoke, ‘Straight to business then, Ahome?’

His voice sounded amused, but glad, thought Sana. This can’t have been an interesting job for him, and yet he was here. Whoever was selling this thing had to have plenty of credits already to make him take this job. It was well known Vez liked the tougher assignments. Was proud of it too. It was what got him so well paid in the first place.

‘Definitely, Vez’, said Sana. ‘Couldn’t you have found somewhere just a little nicer to have this meeting? Like a garbage compactor?’
Vez laughed. ‘Not my usual style is it? Still, it’s useful for deals like this. When the seller doesn’t want too many people knowing about it.’
‘So who is it then, Vez? Going to tell us?’ queried Sana.
‘Come on Ahome, you know that’s not how things are done down here.’
‘Worth a try anyway’, she said.
‘Well, he’s the usual paranoid type. Most people wouldn’t understand, but I think you’ll appreciate why when you see what he’s selling.’

Casually, Vez, flicked a switch on the desk he stood behind and his holoprojector whirred into life. Two objects appeared over the desk, one a small pyramidal object with strange markings on it and the other a codex of manuscripts, bound together in a very old looking book. It had to be old, thought Sana, but then again … ‘Any chance of a detailed look, Vez?’ she asked.

Again, still silent, Vez flipped a switch on his desk. Waiting for the reaction …

‘Stars end’, whispered Sana, in shock. Now she’d had a closer look, the impact of what she was seeing began to sink in. The pyramidal object was definitely a Sith holocron, definitely very old. And as for the codex … She bent down to take a closer look. Vez flipped another switch and the book opened, allowing her a partial glimpse of the writing inside. That was the Sith language alright, she thought. It could be decoded, but only by three institutions in the galaxy. The ability to write it down was only given to a few, empowered either by the dark side, or genetics. Even then, Sith writings had only ever been committed to Khhaskk hide by a very select few in Sith society. The priest caste and the Dark Lords only. Attempts had been made to forge it, but they were easily spotted. And the fact that it was written had to make it at least 6,000 years old. The Golden Age era. Also, what Kehoe had known was that Sana was one of the few who knew anything about the Sith Empire. The texts were definitely the main find. Only force users could access holocra, but even so. Only four Sith holocra were known to be in existence, all of them securely locked away in the Jedi Temple.

Sana took a moment to get her breath. She could feel Farn’s astonishment radiating from him. She’d heard him gasp.

‘Wow Vez’, she said, ‘where’d your boss find these?’
‘No idea. He hasn’t told me much about them, just obviously what they are and these three visuals.’
‘Can you tell me anything about the manuscripts?’ asked Sana.
‘Not really. Obviously of Sith origin and genuine. I don’t think my employer’s brave enough to try a scam. He said they’re very old, about 9,000 years old he said.’
‘Incredible’ breathed Sana. ‘We’ve had agents all over the galaxy and never seen anything like this.’
Vez saw his opening. ‘Which makes them even more valuable, doesn’t it?’

Sana came back down to the ground with a bang and her eyes narrowed as she managed to drag them away from the holodisplay. ‘Go on Vez, what’s he asking?’
‘Fifty million credits. Minimum’, said Vez casually, as though talking about the price of stimcaf.
‘Fifty million!’ shouted Sana. ‘You’ve got to be joking Vez. They’re not worth that much.’
‘Actually, they’re worth more. Got to be the most interesting find for a while. Everyone loves a scare story don’t they?’

Sana scowled at Vez.

‘Besides, you’re not the only prospective buyer for these things you know. The Jedi want them and someone else is interested too. The seller’s going for competitive bids.’
‘Okay Vez, we’ll deal. But I’m gonna need copies of that display to take back to convince my boss about the price. The Museum hasn’t got that much money to spare.’
‘Copies are fine’ said Vez and handed over a datacard. ‘But I wouldn’t take too long discussing it over stimcaf and biscini in the tapcaf in the Museum forum. Highest bidder wins you know.’ Vez smirked, stood up and indicated it was time for them to leave. ‘Besides, I have another appointment soon. Kar Brehan should be here any moment.’
‘Like I said Vez, we’ll deal on this one. We want the manuscripts. We may even talk to the Jedi about it.’ With another scowl, Sana followed Farn out of the door into the dark, dank walkway beyond.

* * *

Sana and Farn swung themselves into their speeder and set off down the walkway, back towards the Museum. Neither of them noticed the small dark droid hovering above them in the dark corner of the walkway’s arch.

‘Thank goodness we’re out of there. I’m gonna need a long time in the refresher to get rid of the smell down here’ said Sana.
Farn smiled. ‘You think those things are genuine?’ he asked.
‘Yep. Definitely. Kehoe’ll go crazy when he sees them.’
‘So are we gonna stump up the cash or deal with the Jedi?’
‘No idea. That’ll be Kehoe’s call I reckon.’
‘Wow’ said Farn, ‘I hope we get ‘em.’
‘Yeah, it’d be nice to finally bring in something good.’
‘So who do you reckon the other buyer is? Gotta be someone rich to afford that kind of stuff.’
‘Probably a Hutt. They’re always trying to get their hands on things like those. Delusions of grandeur, I guess.’

Farn smiled again and both agents drifted off into silence, both lost in thought. It wasn’t often they saw something like this, thought Sana. Lost in her thoughts, Sana almost missed the dark shadow up ahead in the middle of the walkway. It wasn’t moving, just there in their path … In their path?

‘Slow down, Farn. Now!’
‘What?’ sputtered Farn. ‘I can’t see any …’

His voice cut off as two blaster bolts discharged in their direction, slamming into the front of the speeder, bringing it rapidly to a halt.

‘Turn us around now!’ ordered Sana. In the corner of her eye she could see the dark shadow moving towards them. Fast. Farn spun the speeder round, but just as they started to move back along the walkway, two more blaster bolts slammed into the engine compartment of the speeder. The engine whined alarmingly, then cut out. Surgical strikes by a pro, thought Sana. Turning to Farn she ordered him out of the speeder. They’d have to fight this one out, she thought.

Both agents crouched behind the car, blasters at the ready. Sana squinted, as in the distance she thought she saw something detach itself from the shadow. Then she jerked her head back in surprise. Something, or someone, had leapt from whatever the shadow was and landed in front of them, and ignited a long red blade … Without hesitating, both she and Farn opened fire, but whoever it was in those dark robes just batted the blaster fire away. A Jedi, thought Sana, but no Jedi had a red lightsaber … The Jedi leapt again, somersaulting over their blaster fire to land on the roof of their speeder and Sana’s eyes could barely keep up as she watched the glittering red blade swing down towards Farn. ‘Watch out!’ she cried. But she was too late. The blade sliced through the air and before Farn could move his head was cut off his neck in one smooth motion and the Jedi, or whoever it was, spun round to face her.

‘Put the blaster down. It is useless to resist’ the man in the dark robes commanded. ‘Stand up and move back from the speeder.’

Sana lifted both her arms and let her blaster fall. The guy knew how to use a lightsaber that was for sure, she thought. Warily she moved a few paces backwards away from the speeder and the guy dropped down to ground level in front of her, his blade raised to point straight at her.

‘I don’t know what you want, but don’t kill me. Maybe we can cut a deal’ said Sana, sounding a lot braver than she felt.
‘Ah, but my services are not for hire. However, you do have something I want.’ The voice purred in the darkness.
Sana considered the voice. Definitely human and male, she thought. Possibly young and inexperienced. ‘Who are you?’ she asked.
‘The rightful owner of something you’re seeking.’
‘No’, breathed Sana. ‘You can’t be! Your order’s been …’
‘Dead? No, just living in the shadows.’ The dark man finished her sentence for her. ‘Tell me what you know.’ Again the dark man commanded her.
‘I – I don’t know what you mean’ stammered Sana.
The dark man raised his free hand and suddenly Sana started to choke. ‘You will tell me what you know. How quickly and how thoroughly you tell me will determine just how speedily you die.’
Still choking, Sana fell to her knees. ‘No!’ she gasped.
The dark figure loomed over her and brought his lightsaber to point at her right thigh. ‘Very well’ he said.

* * *

In the distance a rat crouched in fright, before scurrying away down a ventilation shaft as a woman’s screams echoed down the dark walkway …
