PART II: DARK KNOWLEDGE

CHAPTER NINE

An incoming comm light flashed, interrupting Darth Plageuis’ meditation. With a quick gesture of his hand, he used the Force to trigger the switch. “Report, my apprentice” he said.

No image was being transmitted, a necessary precaution here on Coruscant. But the voice was clear.

“My Master, I have discovered the nature of the Sith artifacts that have been put on sale by the mysterious vendor. I recovered a data chip from two of the Museum’s agents. They have been silenced.”

“Show me what you have learned, apprentice” said Plageuis hungrily. He watched in silence as three images hovered above the holo display.

For a long time, he sat silent, contemplating the three images. He did not speak, his only reaction a hiss of air being sucked in between his teeth. Finally, his contemplation was disturbed by his apprentice.

“My Master, what is thy bidding? I do not …”

“You doN't recognize these artifacts, do you?” It was more of a statement than a question.

“Not at all. They are definitely of Sith origin, then?”

“Indeed they are my young apprentice. I myself have never seen them. But I believe I know their nature. They may well prove to be more important than even you suspect.”

“We have not been betrayed then, my Master?”

“A curious question. I see you have thought of the possibility of betrayal too.” For a moment, Plageuis paused, considering possible actions. Abruptly, he snapped out a question. “Have the Jedi seen this document?”

“No, my Master. They have not yet arrived.”

“Send me your location, apprentice. Then you must confront the bounty hunter, find out what he knows and eliminate him.”

“And the Jedi?” asked Belo.

“I will deal with them myself. The securing of these artifacts is our main priority. Then we will deal with our betrayer. For we have been betrayed indeed.”

“Yes, my Lord. Transmitting location now.”

Darth Plageuis cut the comm transmission and studied the co-ordinates his apprentice had sent him, then called up a map of the area. With a wave of his hand, the holo map disappeared and he strode out of his mediation chamber, heading for the Temple’s hangar bay.

Jedi Master Kar Brehan and his companion, Jocasta Nu, sped along one of the service tunnels in the Southern Underground, the younger Jedi at the controls of their airspeeder. Not wanting to attract any more attention than they were already receiving from the Underground’s less savoury inhabitants, their external lights were switched off. As they traveled along in silence, various sounds could be heard echoing from far off, originating in tunnels far away. Snatches of music caught their ears, as well as the less welcome sound of occasional blaster fire, or the odd scream of a Coruscanti sewer rat as it met its end to one predator or another.

After one of these screams, Jocasta Nu couldn’t prevent herself from shuddering. The stench of the Underground, mixed with the echo of their violent and often short lives that resonated through the Force, she couldn’t help but feel disgust and found it hard to shut out the despair and darkness that cloaked the lives of those who lived in the Underground.

Kar Brehan smiled inwardly and spoke. “Be at peace Jocasta. I too feel the dark side here. Right now there is nothing we can do to help these beings.”

In turn, Jocasta Nu allowed herself to smiled a little ashamedly, before replying to the elderly Zabrakkian. “I know Master Brehan. But it is hard sometimes not to feel overwhelmed by, by … this.” Unable to describe the Underground, she simply waved her hand to vaguely indicate the tunnel around her. “That such conditions exist anywhere is wrong. But that they exist at all on Coruscant, the heart of the Republic? It is dreadful that such poverty exists alongside such wealth.”

“I understand. You aren’t used to such things, Jocasta” replied Kar.

“I hope I never get used to things such as this” she said.

“I know what you mean” he said wryly. He shook his head and sighed. “The Underground has existed on Coruscant for over 20,000 years, and has deepened with every layer of construction in the capital. It is all but invisible to those who live on the surface, who perhaps find it easier to ignore such places. It has always been hard for people to see things that no light reaches.”

“Something tells me Kar, that you’re not just talking about the Underground.”

“I occasionally wonder about the wisdom of the Jedi Order being based on Coruscant at all. The Force is a whirl of sentience here. Sometimes it clouds the vision. Consider the extremes of light and darkness present among so many people clustered in one place. It makes things difficult to see.”

“You have had visions, Master Kar?” asked Jocasta. “Is the Temple in danger?”

“No, no. Don’t worry Jocasta, nothing like that. I am an old man, Jocasta, and the worries of old men are not something you should concern yourself with!”

Jocasta smiled at him in reply. “You’re not that old, Kar, or you wouldn’t be here. But I would like to know what’s troubling you.”

“Thank you for your concern Jocasta. We Zabrakkians may not live as long as Master Yoda, but I am old enough indeed!” Kar gave out a short laugh, accompanied by Jocasta’s smile. “But sometimes an old man wonders about the future and what will happen to those he leaves behind. I sit and I talk with the old Jedi and sometimes when I meditate I feel a sense of something …” His voice tailed off.

Mentally, Jocasta shook her head. Master Brehan and his ‘old Jedi’. Sometimes she wondered about Kar, often referring to the forms in his holocra as if they were real Jedi, instead of holographic gatekeepers. But as for what he sensed … “What do you sense Kar?” she asked.

“It’s difficult to describe, Jocasta. A sense of something … missing. No, not something that’s lost, but a sense of something we’re unable to see or find.”

“That sounds a little vague Master Kar” was all Jocasta said.

“It is. And that is what troubles me. No doubt the Force will reveal the answer when it is ready. Let us concentrate on the here and now. We are nearing our destination.”

Jocasta Nu slowed the speeder a little as she checked the map on the dashboard’s viewscreen. “There should be an access hatch just ahead on the right, Kar. That will lead us to Vez’s little hideout.” Jocasta pulled up outside the access hatch. “Here we are, Kar. Let’s go!”

“Wait a moment, Jocasta” said Kar Brehan. Jocasta turned round. There was something in her tone that held her back. Kar was normally eager to forge ahead on these missions.

“What is it Kar?” she asked, a frown creasing her forehead.

“Some … something tells me that this mission is important. And dangerous. These artifacts must be recovered” he said, stumbling a little over the words. “If we fail, then I must ask you to do something for me Jocasta.”

“Of course, Kar, anything.” Jocasta was worried now.

“One day, a Padawan will come to you, wanting to read ancient texts. He will not know what he is looking for.”

Jocasta stared at him as if he’d gone mad. What was he trying to tell her? “Is this a vision of the future Kar? I don’t understand …”

“You will know when he approaches you. I do not know who this Padawan will be. But you will show him the Journal.”

“The Journal? But that’s …”

“Just say you will do it for me, Jocasta. There is no time to explain fully now.” Kar Brehan was looking serious and more than a little flustered.

“I will try Master Kar, although I would prefer to know what was happening.” Jocasta was thoroughly confused. This was not the normal preparation for such a mission. Why couldn’t Kar have mentioned this before? And why now? Before she could even open her mouth to put forward the questions that were flowing through her mind, Kar spoke. “We haven’t much time, Jocasta. Let us head on. I fear we must hurry. You will take the lead.”

“As you wish, Kar.” With a quick breath, Jocasta tried to compose herself. She went forward and opened the hatch.

She ducked her head as he cautiously stepped through the access hatch into a large chamber, a little like a rounded cube in shape. She called to Kar Brehan, who was a few steps behind her. “It’s ok Kar. Come on in. No real light to speak of.” She walked forward, noting a small stream of polluted water that flowed sluggishly along the side of the chamber and gurgled into a drain at her feet. As she walked into the large chamber, she ignited her glow rod and flicked it around her. The chamber was very old, being made with brick, rather than the usual duracrete. “Nothing here, but there’s a tunnel to the right of the chamber. That must lead to Gondan Vez’s hideout.”

As Kar Brehan stepped into the large chamber, Jocasta had already got to the right hand tunnel, which was some fifteen metres away from the access hatch. Kar watched as his colleague turned into the tunnel, the light from her glow rod flickering ahead of her. Suddenly his danger sense screamed at him and before he could shout out a warning, he watched as her body flew across the chamber, a look of horror on her face, which disappeared as her body impacted onto the brick wall, stunning her into unconsciousness. The glow rod fell from her hand and shattered on the floor, sending the room into darkness. Kar ran over to where her body lay, even though he could not see her, his hand grabbing his lightsaber from his belt.

Even as he reached her side, the sound of a lightsaber blade broke the silence and a red light flared into the room. As Kar turned, a dark figure illuminated by the blade’s red light spoke, a high, cold voice, dripping with mockery and darkness.

“Welcome, Master Brehan. I’ve been expecting you.”
