JEDI TALES: THE ORIGIN OF PALPATINE
PART II: DARK KNOWLEDGE
CHAPTER ELEVEN
Belo hurried down the accessway towards Gondan Vez’s base in the Underground. As his speeder bike sped down the tunnels towards his destination, Belo considered his options. Vez was a formidable fighter, and a Korunnai, so was sensitive to the Force, though nowhere near as much as the Jedi or the Sith. It would help his reactions and he may have defences against mind control. So it would be best to disable him …
Belo pulled the speeder bike to a halt outside a small dwelling, randomly constructed, mostly from pre-fab plasteel boxes by the look of it, thought Belo. His eyes did a sweep of the area while his other senses searched for threats that may be hidden from vision. The usual refinements were there: sensors, spy cams, anti-espionage devices. Vez obviously liked to feel secure. There was no way he was going to get inside undetected. So, thought Belo, let’s just knock at the door and see where that gets me.
Belo stepped up to the entrance and tapped the intercom and spoke into it. “I have business with Gondan Vez”. No more need be said, he thought. A cold, metallic voice answered: “Who is it? What do you want?”
“My name is Soon Pask. I have come on behalf of certain people who wish to buy something he has”, said Belo.
There was a pause. Belo knew the security array was scanning him for weaponry. He wondered how often lightsabers showed up on such things and made a note to check. “Enter”, said the droid-like voice. Obvious not a C2 unit, programmed for pleasantries, thought Belo.
The door slid open and Belo walked inside, his senses on full alert, ready to react if Vez should suspect a trap. On his right, a Gank security droid, heavily armed, stepped in front of him. “Wait here”, said the metallic voice, “Vez will see you shortly.” Belo decided to sit in the small atrium-like chamber. It was a position that gave the impression there was no threat. He looked around and decided that whatever air-scrubbing system Vez had installed here, it was obviously faulty.
Belo didn’t have to wait long before Vez walked into the room. As he did so, Belo analysed his appearance: tall, strong, fluid movements, a large presence, obviously designed to intimidate. He was known to have killed one Jedi at least during his time as a bounty hunter. A very formidable opponent. But he did not have the dark side as his ally. Taking all this in at a glance, Belo stood up to meet him. He knew his own slight physique would not make him seem much of a threat. All the better, he thought.
Vez spoke, his deep voice filling the small room. “So, Soon Pask, huh?”
“Yes,” said Belo unwaveringly. “I’m here on behalf of … clients, who would like to buy some very valuable artifacts you have for sale.”
“Clients, huh? And who might they be?” said Vez, a touch of aggression in his voice.
Belo knew Vez was sounding him out, determining whether he was a genuine buyer or not. “Well, as I’m sure you’re aware, my clients are cultured people, with a very refined taste. But given the rumoured nature of this artifacts, I’m sure you can understand their wish to …”
“Remain anonymous, yeah. I get you,” said Vez. “Cultured clients. That sounds like the Hutts to me.”
Belo faked an understated reaction of shock, quickly covered.
“Yep, Hutts all the way. By the way, you’re a little late. The Museum and the Jedi have been here already so if you really want these things, it’ll cost you. Highest bidder wins.”
Belo let a half-faked, half-true look of disgust cross his face and said, “my clients are willing to pay any reasonable price and are prepared to pay a small commission to its vendor”.
“A small commission”, Vez shook his head and smiled. “Ok, let’s go inside, but first of all, the formalities must be observed.” He motioned to the Gank security droid to come forward. “Hand over the hardware to Ten-Bee here. No point in taking risks is there?”
Belo slowly removed his blaster and handed it over to the droid, who immediately stored it away in the cabinet at its back. “And the knife you’ve got stashed inside that cloak of yours.”
Belo smiled reassuringly and said, “I’m not an assassin, Vez. I’m simply here to find out what you’ve got and arrange a price for it.” So the scanners didn’t pick up the lightsaber, he thought. Unless …
“An assassin?” Vez laughed out loud. “I’d like to see you try, kid. But your bosses don’t like paying for things. Hand it over to the droid and we’ll go and talk prices.” Vez watched him take out the knife. Belo felt his anger rise and got an urging from the Force …
“But this knife’s not for you Vez,” said Belo, “it’s for something else entirely.” Belo was tired of waiting and game playing. Poised as though he was going to hand over the knife to the droid, instead he spun and as he completed his turn he hurled the knife towards Vez. But instead of Vez’s chest or head, it buried itself in the blaster holster at his side, slicing through the blaster and into Vez’s thigh. Vez shouted, a combination of rage and pain and fell back through the open doorway, as Belo’s lightsaber seemingly appeared from nowhere. Before the droid could get off a single shot, he sliced through Ten-Bee and reduced it to a pile of scrap.
Vez had disappeared from the doorway in the time it had taken to reduce Ten-Bee to spare parts and Belo rushed after him, already worried he’d given the bounty hunter time to re-arm. As he rushed through the door, the Force gave him a warning and he ducked backwards as his own blood-stained knife narrowly missed his face and buried itself into the plasteel wall to his right. Before he could right himself, the knife was followed by the wide slash of a Force Pike towards his midriff which sliced through his cloak, only missing his torso by microns as he pulled backwards. It was Vez, with his favoured weapon of choice, who immediately reversed the Pike and swung the other end of his Pike, and caught Belo under his chin and sent him flying back into the antechamber onto his back.
Vez ground out his words, “you’re no Hutt slime and you’re no Jedi either”, he said as he rushed into the room and brought the Pike’s blade down in a wide sweep towards Belo’s head. It would have carved it in two, but Belo recovered quickly and brought his saber up to knock the Pike aside. He rolled over and got to his feet. He was met with a barrage of blows from the Pike. Racing to meet the blows, Belo parried well. “I’m much more than either, bounty hunter scum.” He span round, aiming to slice the Pike in two, but the Pike held, and Vez pushed back against the blow, the saber hissing as the two weapons ground against each other. “This isn’t just any Force Pike,” said Vez, “it’s a lightsaber resistant one. A nice surprise for amateurs like you”, he said contemptuously.
Quickly, Vez kicked out and knocked him off-balance, forcing him to retreat to the wall. Vez’s Force Pike whirred as he sent a hail of blows, forcing Belo to retreat. Belo had not expected Vez to be this much of a challenge, especially as he prided himself on his skills with a lightsaber. Out of the corner of his eye, Belo spotted the pile of scrap that was once Ten-Bee. Keeping his focus on Vez’s precision blows, slowly the various pieces of the security droid rose into the air. Opening himself to the Force, he directed the upper arm and used the Force to fling it hard against Vez’s back.
“What the ___!” Vez swore as a droid arm hit him square in the middle of his back, and as he turned to face the onslaught, more pieces of the former droid flew towards him. He warded off a couple of chunks and dodged more but then the main body of the security droid hit him straight in the chest, making him stagger backwards, as a further piece of the droid knocked the Force Pike out of his hand. Belo seized his opportunity and hit him hard on the back of his with the butt of his lightsaber, sending Vez down to the ground. Vez was strong and was stunned, but still conscious as he sprawled, gasping on the ground. Slowly he turned himself over and looked, stunned, at Belo. As he did this, Belo calmly deactivated his lightsaber and picked up the Force Pike and pointed the blade at Vez’s heart.
“Up against the wall, Vez.” Belo kept the Pike’s blade only an inch from Vez’s heart as the bounty hunter raised himself up and placed his back against the wall. With his free hand, Belo gestured and Vez began to choke. “I don’t play by the same rules as Hutt slime or Jedi, bounty hunter”, spat out Belo as Vez gasped and spluttered, desperately reaching for air. Belo watched Vez struggle for a moment, then lifted his hand. Vez, sputtered, “You … you …” but before he could say any more, Belo cut him off again with another Force Choke. “Be quiet, Vez. I need to make a quick comm. call and don’t need any interruptions.” Belo lowered his hand, and Vez was able to breathe again, but this time he stayed silent. Belo activated his wrist comm.
Plageuis answered immediately. “Yes. What is it?”
Belo spoke quickly, breathing hard after his triumph. “My master, I have the bounty hunter Gondan Vez.”
Plageuis waited for a second or two before he answered. “Excellent, my apprentice. We will soon be in possession of our rightful heritage. Hold him there and I will join you now. The Jedi are no longer a concern.”
“Yes, my master.” Belo signed off and looked calculatingly at Vez. “Well, I have disarmed you, now I will have to disable you. When my master arrives we will then indeed discuss prices.” Belo drew back the Pike, ready to strike.
Outside in the access tunnel, the Dark Eye probe droid hovered almost motionlessly as it recorded the screams coming from inside Vez’s hideout.
So sorry, friends!!! I hadn't realised it was so long since I'd posted. Really hope it was worth waiting for! I hope this was also a good send-off for Vez, even though we hadn't gotten to know him so well yet.
*Begs for forgiveness*

Worth the wait. I am proud to have gone out with such a fight, forcing a Sith to resort to the Force. How often will you be updating?
Nevertheless, fantastic.
As for the title change, PM a mod or other writers b/c they all know, however I am not sure of how to do it exactly.

Great post Jedi_Sharoes. Hope you keep them coming. It is great to have a story from Palpatine's past. Others have tried to write a good origin story for him, but they seem to be missing something that your story is not missing. Keep up the good work.
