This has taken a really, really long time - and the post is rather short. But I'm trying to update my older fics...so please bear with me. I've no intention of letting this vanish into the morass of forgotten fics. happy

maychorian: Obi-Wan is the type who will shoulder blame, given the chance - or even if not. In this case, he certainly would feel distinctly uncomfortable, yes. And Qui-Gon is going to be definitely not happy. Thank you!

LuvEwan: Lol. Obi isn't going to come to his senses any time soon. And yes, Garen and Bant were sweet, weren't they? We'd love to have friends like those. I haven't seen you around either; what's up?

Thanks so much, m'dear.

Seven, my paddy: You're back! And you've finished all those dratted essays too. hugs They're being very mean to Obi, yes. Soon, I'll chop them all off. Or you could, if you want to. With your practice sabre. grin Thank you, little one.

nd_jedi: What's happening to Obi-Wan? All will be revealed...soon. Little by little. Thanks!

dianethx: So what's going on with him...plenty going on with him. Some of it will be revealed in this upcoming part. And you'll get a few answers. Slowly. grin Thanks for reading, m'lady.

Khris0117: Thank you!:)

stormqueen874: That marble thing is 'Ischila'. Thank you, dear. I'm flattered. blush

corellian-jedi: Yep, those midlevel years can do that to you. grin Especially Yoda’s padawan, who is actually a canon character. Yep, you meet Schen in this one. And I hope I see you back soon. happy Thanks for reading!

Master_Noi: Knew you’d love Garen. No, Obi isn't going to be okay at all. he’s getting worse, as a matter of fact.

Just_Jill : Jill, thanks for the wonderful compliment. I'm so looking forward to your beautiful sequels. You’re a wonderful writer, make no mistake. I've enjoyed your stories so much, and I’m honoured you're reading mine. happy

sheleigh: Thanks so much. Obi's not good. And it'll take a while before he's any better. happy And I hope you'll leap out of your seat again. If you’re still keeping with this one. Sigh.

Jedi_Tigris : I couldn't predict Qui's reaction, at the moment. happy Thanks!

Star_Drifter : love Wow. I’m so flattered. Thanks you so much. I'm so lad this littlew fic appeals to you so much. Hope you keep liking it. grin

River_Stone : Too true, RS. Things are spiralling out of control, and Qui-Gon isn't happy at all. grin More soon, and thank you so much for your great review.

kateydidnt: Thanks! happy

Fluff-Slayer: You're going to use 'Poor' Obi-Wan a lot more times, actually. grin Poor Fluffy. Thanks for bumping this up, m'dear. And for reading.

Now, for a middling update.........

Part 10

III

Obi-Wan had barely stumbled out of the Crystal Lake Room, taken a deep breath, and begun to steady himself, when the control panel gave a sharp 'Beep!' and the door slid open again.

Garen strode out, with Bant in attendance. They spied him leaning against the smooth wall, and came up to him.

“Insane you might be, but my friend, you are,” spoke Bant, folding her fins against her chest. “Proceed to the Healer’s Ward, you will.”

“Go there, I will not.” Obi-Wan’s eyes regained some of the sparkle they had lost. He stood straighter, even if the pounding inside his head merely rose a notch. It seemed to be telling him something—but he hardly knew what. One never could reason with pain, after all. That was the advantage a thousand blasters had, over a pleading look or entreaty…mind-numbing pain could accomplish what civilized conversation could not.

He dimly heard Garen say something…about Qui-Gon? What was his pre-occupation with his Master anyway?

Apparently he had switched topics, for he now leant towards Obi-Wan and grasped his shoulders in a firm grip. “Well? Shall I call Master Qui-Gon?”

A frown knotted Obi-Wan’s eye-brows as he caught hold of Garen’s hands. “No, don’t. I’ve come to my senses,” he smiled. “I’m going to our quarters.” I can’t let the Ischila defeat me. I can’t. Not before Schen. Not before Qui-Gon’s first padawan. “I’m supposed to meet him there.”

The concerned look in Garen’s eyes faded slightly. “Good. Now, Bant and I will escort you—”

“No, don’t. There’s no need for that, really.” Obi-Wan pressed a thumb to his temple and massaged it. “I’m fine, now. Rest will do me good.” He threw a piercing glance at Garen. “You don’t need to escort me.”

Garen began to shake his head, looking at Bant. “You’ll let me be the judge of your present state, Obi-Wan. I know what I saw, and you aren’t well. Now, I’ll see you at you quarters, and then Bant and I will—” he stopped abruptly, speech arrested by the expression in his clan-mate’s eyes.

Obi-Wan’s eyes were no longer the serene, crystalline blue-green they usually were—now, shades of grey swirled in their depths, strangely mesmerizing. Compelling. One could not refuse anything those eyes said. They promised peace. Calm. Serene. They cajoled. They pleaded. They commanded. One could not help but feel a supreme willingness to do whatever they asked.

Grey was the master, and everything else bowed before it.

“Bant, Garen,” Obi-Wan spoke quietly. “You don’t need to escort me.” His fingers fluttered through the air as he did.

A vacant expression crossed Garen’s face, while Bant looked confused. “Obi-Wan…”

“You don’t have to escort me.”

Garen’s eyes grew steadily unfocussed. “We don’t have to escort you.”

He’s fighting it. “You will let me go my way.” Don’t fight it.

Bant’s eyes swivelled towards the ceiling. “We will let you go your way.”

Mission accomplished. “Thank you.”

He left behind two strangely unsteady friends in the passage, and walked swiftly towards the turbo-lifts.

The Archives, floated a whisper in his ears. Go to the Archives.

A part of his mind assented readily, while another began to argue. Why? Why go to the Archives?

Ischila. Power. Battle. Battle. Power. The whisper grew insistent.

He shook his head as dizziness swept through him again. No. No. Go to quarters. Room. Bed. Sleep. Rest. Qui-Gon. Garen? Where Garen?

The whisper tugged at him like Kari’e winds whipping along the earth. Archives. Ischila. Battle. Victory.

Jedi. No victory. No defeat. Peace. Calm. Force. He continued to argue, trying to reason with something strangely devoid of logical powers. A Knight stared at him strangely, as he staggered unsteadily into the turbo-lift. Heat rushed into his face as Obi-Wan felt the knight’s scrutiny; he guarded himself from returning the knight’s stare with great difficulty. Must not. Lose Control. Must Not.

Peace. Ischila. Long, sweet peace. The whisper murmured soothingly.

Obi-Wan closed his eyes, wondering when and how the Force had assumed such a sweet tone. It usually did call out to him, but did not render him into the boneless state he was in, now. Was this what it was like, to be one with the Force?

But if he truly had achieved it, why was another part of his brain rebelling against it?

Feel, Obi-Wan. Feel, don’t think. Ah. Qui-Gon’s words. Qui-Gon’s advice. He had never yet known his Master to be wrong.

Grey mists swirled in the depth of his mind, sheathing the sparks that had seemingly resided in his heart for aeons. He felt at home, here. It was the natural state, the state which he had yearned for all his life. He felt calm, remarkably oriented. His body felt far away, but he was focussed.

Peace, floated a whisper into his mind, and he assented readily. A Jedi always sought peace.

He was being pulled towards a certain direction. Well, then. A Jedi always did obey the Force, and so would he.

“Aren’t you stepping out?” asked a foreign voice, and Obi-Wan opened his eyes. The knight—his turbo-lift companion—was looking at him, half concerned, half curious.

Obi-Wan opened his mouth to speak and then closed it, puzzled. Where? Stepping out where?

The knight gestured towards the open turbo-lift doors. “The Archives level. You asked to stop here.” He looked at Obi-Wan again, as though searching for something he could not quite pin-point.

So.

It appeared he had made his decision.

His headache left him abruptly, as though it had never existed in the first place. Obi-Wan’s stomach churned for an instant, before being replaced by a remarkable serenity. “Thank you.” He bowed towards the knight, clasped his arms into the sleeves of his robe, and strode out.

***********

She still looked the same as the day she had been knighted.

Auburn hair clustered around her oval face in small curls; deep brown eyes twinkled out from under delicately arched eye-brows, giving her the look of a human girl barely out of her teens, while in reality, she would never see her thirtieth cycle again.

The wind whipped around Qui-Gon’s robes as he walked towards the knight, as she stepped down from the YBGT-657 shuttle, moving sedately down the docking bay. Abruptly, she raised her head and saw Qui-Gon coming towards her.

Her face ceased to look expressionless, and a smile blossomed on her face.

“Schen.” Qui-Gon held out his hands as he approached her, his eyes alight with happiness.

“Qui-Gon.” She let her bag slip down from her shoulder, whereupon it was swiftly picked up by a transport droid. She took his hands, looked him up and down, the smile widening. “Grey becomes you.”

He began to laugh. Then, abruptly, he took her in a crushing embrace. “My padawan.” He set her back, her surprise at this reaction not escaping his notice, and took her in from head to toe. “You look well, considering you’ve been wandering in the Helgend wastes for more than a cycle.”

“Would you rather I came back torn to shreds, my robes in tatters, pleading for a painless death?” She retorted as she began walking with him, her eyes gleaming.

“I never could understand your taste for gruesome consequences. Enough of that.” He looked at her keenly. “It might have been more than a year since I last saw you, but you look a little less than your usual, ebullient self.”

She smiled slightly, as they left the transport bays and entered the corridors of the Temple. “Only you would call me ebullient. The Helgenders would call me anything but.”

“Diplomacy prevents wars. It doesn’t ensure friendship.”

“One of your earliest lessons. I remember it well.” She secured her slipping cloak over her shoulders, and threw a discreet look behind Qui-Gon. He understood her glance, and shook his head. “Obi-Wan is resting in our quarters…I told him that I would meet him there, with you.”

“You still read minds.”

“I have always been an exceptionally powerful Jedi,” came the calm answer, and Schen chuckled.

“I see that you still entertain delusions of grandeur.”

“Reality, my Schen, is frequently boring.”

She shook her head. “I have missed you.”

The answer came a split second later than she had expected. “As have I.”

She threw him a keen, sideways glance at the man walking beside her, hands clasped into sleeves, wild chestnut hair billowing about as she had always remembered it. His walk was more measured now; his face more wrinkled… but there was a serenity in those features, and the sparkle in those blue eyes was intact.

She remembered a time when those eyes had been cold and lifeless. When it seemed as though the man within the Jedi had vanished, to be replaced by a machine, a droid that obeyed commands, and that was merely a vessel of the Force. Dull, slow anger still stirred in the depths of her heart when she thought of those days—those years. Those years when Qui-Gon, the compassionate Jedi had vanished, replaced by Qui-Gon the super-efficient diplomat who risked death-defying missions. Who cared next to nothing about the path his life took. And who almost did not care about the first apprentice he had trained, and who barely even noticed her presence on her rare visits to the Temple.

And then there had been the embrace she had received, just a moment ago. Not to mention the warmth in his voice, and the gleam in his eyes. He was still the perfect Jedi, masking his emotions as he had always done, and she envied his ability to do so. But she had known him too long not to notice sign of animation. And she had been keeping track of him and his missions, even if he did not seem to notice her anymore.

No, that was not entirely accurate, she reminded herself. He had cared. Even in the depths of misery, he had remembered. And he had noticed. There were certain messages and meetings she would always hold dear to her heart. She knew what it must have cost him. And she had sworn, then, that no one would betray Qui-Gon as Xanatos had. She would not allow it.

Her thoughts settled on her former master's latest apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi. She had heard of him, yes. Quite a lot, from various sources. But her missions, and her Master's missions had conspired to avoid a meeting, thus far. Strange...but such things did happen. Especially if one was a diplomat sent to Outer Rim planets all the time.

Now, finally, she would meet him. Finally.

I'm glad to see this story updated - I've really enjoyed it happy .

So Obi-Wan is mind-whammying his friends, in spite of their training - it sounds like there's a power at work here that's not entirely Obi-Wan's. And the voice in his head - what is the Ischila doing to him?

More soon, please batting ?

Yay! The story lives! dancing
Amazing! I love how fluid your story is, everything, especially every interaction- Obi and friends, Qui and Schen- is perfect for its purposes.
Delightful characterisation-especially Schen. I think I'm going to like her...

Obi Wan mind tricked his friends [face_shocked] somehow I don't think Garen will be too pleased about that!

So, that voice, was that obi or the ishilla effecting him? wonder what else it can do? seems as if we've just seen the tip of the iceberg!

Update soon praying

Obi-Wan offered himself as a highly responsible role model in “Episode II.” He didn’t like reckless driving;
he disapproved of being chained to a big pillar as large animals with pincers approached;
he just said no to deathsticks.

Oh, so Ominous!

This is not a good thing, I don't think. It's really scary.

Schen, on the other hand, doesn't seem to be so. I liked her evaluation of her old Master, of how he'd changed - and changed back. Excellently done!

Grey was the master, and everything else bowed before it.

That's such a pretty metaphor, and it's only intensified by the comment that Schen made about grey "becoming Qui-Gon". Is it just me, or do we have a comparison there? shock

Clever, clever.

I, too, loved the scene with Bant and Garen. Very interesting. Would never have expected that. And the description of Qui-Gon walking...

Mwah. love

Thank you for updating! You made my day all better.

Whew! I just spent several hours( stopping for dinner)
reading your entire story to date.

My eyes are a bit sore but I couldn't stop. hypnotized

I had seen this story a while back,I wish I had started reading then, instead of trying to cram the whole thing in one or (Two)
sittings. nerd

I love the interaction between Qui and Obi, they seem very happy together, although I think Obi is a bit worried about Qui-Gons
first Padawan not liking him! worried

Obi is such a worrier, and Qui-Gon being just like a Father wanting to make sure Obi will survive the future. love

It was sad him overhearing the other padawans talking about
the bruck incident.

That wouldn't help him concentrate on the upcoming duel with the Jewel.

It is a wonderful story thank you for writing it

and another post soon would be appreciated applause

Wow! Master, once again you have outdone yourself. I really can't believe how exceptional you really are.

This was marvelous! But what in the world is Obi-Wan doing? I don't understand! Obi!? What are you doing?

And I like Quiggies first Paddy. She seems uber sweet. I can't wait to see more of her. I also appreciate her preteciveness of her Master. After all, why shouldn't she be?

Oh, I do hope that there's more soon!
