Ah...
What a wonderful surprise!
I have to tell you, I absolutely CHEERED when Garen called Master Jinn.
I loved the scene with Shen, as well. She makes him so... human!
But I have to disagree with others - this is between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon. I'm not sure what Shen thinks she's going to do, but it will be interesting, without a doubt.
Can't wait! Well written!

RE: 'By the pricking of my thumbs...' JA, (Obi/Qui) - *Updated 31/01/2006*
I am so glad that you have updated this wonderful story again!
They looked at each other for a moment, each aware that neither should have succumbed so easily to the Force trick of a friend…and even more important, that a friend wouldn’t really subject them to such a thing. A friend such as Obi-Wan. And that the mind trick had been powerful enough to send them both off-balance. Senior padawans, who were more than capable of guarding themselves against such an eventuality.
“He shouldn’t have been able to do that,” Garen said finally, in a tone that held a good deal of disquiet. More than disquiet; a slow anger still simmered in him—he could not shake it off.
Has the Ischila given Obi-Wan some additional strength to obey its call, or is there something else working here?
She had taken great care not to meet him, or come into any contact with him during those years. She still remembered Qui-Gon’s vaguely hurt expression at her voluntary distance, and Xanatos’s eyes, sparkling with that malicious, knowing look he was always careful to throw at her. The Force had saved her from his using it to his own advantage; she had always been afraid that he would find a way to do so. It had been painful. Very painful.
Poor Schen! Qui-Gon wasn't the only victim of Xanatos!
She completed her search, and stood for a moment in the silent corridor, assimilating her thoughts. Madness. What Qui-Gon or his apprentice were doing at the present moment did not concern her. She was a knight in her own right; she had her missions to report, her meetings with the council, her own plans to make.
An image rose before her eyes: Qui-Gon’s face, closed up, the warmth vanishing. Cold, like a mask. A throb of worry. And then nothing.
She flexed her hands, terminated her request, and walked off in the direction of the Archives.
I don't think that Qui-Gon is going to be thrilled about Schen's behavior, but she seems determined not to let her old Master suffer again. This time, she will not be cut off!
Thanks for the interesting update, PA!
More, when you can, please!
For you!

I think that Obi-Wan should just let the Ischila in once, and see if it works. It seems that if he fights it, it hurts him, so he should try a different approach. Great Story!

Hah! Love that it was Bant to snap out of it first.
So Obi really mind-tricked his friends...this ischila is really strong. Stop messing with Obi's mind! *mutters at the "marble"* Well I'm glad Garen contacted Qui. Who knows what else Obi might do?
Qui, at least tell Schen what's going on! *sigh* Hope she doesn't cause more problems inadvertantly. I hope she can show Qui that he isn't alone, even if this Ischila business if between him and Obi alone.
Wonderful! Hope to see more soon.

I missed an update? Of
this
?!
As usual you have crafted a living, breathing star wars universe, one where we can see, hear, and touch the characters through the computer screen. It seems Qui-Gon's first Padawan has learned more form him than he expected, and I absolutely love how you've crafted Bant and Garen's reactions to Obi-Wan's mind-trick.
I demand you come back here and continue with this story at once! If I have to leave a trail of cookies to this giant net I will....

Part 12
I
Qui-Gon walked along the broad corridors that crisscrossed the Jedi Temple, leading up and down galleries and various recreation and study halls, to the Archives. This section was, predictably in the very centre of the study centre, and adjacent to the senior apprentices' and knights' knowledge centres. His robes fluttered around his boots, and though his eyes were raking the arched ceilings and Bronzium columns, his mind was elsewhere. He barely noticed the salutations and greetings he received; Master Windu, striding along on his way to the mediation hall, watched in some surprise as he vanished around a corner, completely unaware of his greeting.
His attention was not on any one thing, at that moment. They were in fact, split into three different and distinctive areas of unease and a low, simmering frustration. Obi-Wan was the cause of two of them, and Schen was the cause of the third.
Obi-Wan. He had been expressly told to remain in their quarters, threading a rather aggravating little needle, and a dreslin cloth. Admittedly, it was not what padawans did on a regular basis, but it was something Qui-Gon felt essential that Obi-Wan must do. Sometimes, the whys and wherefores of an act were explained only a great deal of time later. Qui-Gon, as Obi-Wan sometimes phrased half-laughingly, had been 'poking about within the Force' (though, as Qui-Gon pointed out, as majestically as he could, this was something Obi-Wan tended to do, with his connection to the Unifying Force), and this was the way the Force had shown.
A small smile tugged the edges of his lips as he remembered the remark, and the mission that had occasioned it. Almost at once, unease and doubt flitted through his mind. Perhaps he should have left well alone. After all, one could not see into the future, and as Master Yoda always intoned, "Always in motion was the future", and if even Master Yoda could not sift through time, then no one else could.
Considering which, this exercise with the Ischila was rather pointless.
But no. His inner sense had spoken too strongly for him not to decide on this course of action.
Obi-Wan. He had been unable to throttle down the apprehension as he had listened to padawan Muln's (rather abashed) account of what exactly had taken place outside the Crystal lake Room. Even if this had been more or less along the lines of what he had expected, reality was more disturbing than his expectations. It was, in fact, vastly different from what he himself had felt, during his trials with the jeweled marble. He had hoped Obi-wan might do better, but then, Obi-Wan was considerably younger, and without the same reasons and motives as Qui-Gon. This was what master Yoda had felt, perhaps. Interesting, though, that Master Dooku himself had not spoken of this, and had not been the one to initiate the process with Qui-Gon. Even more interesting was the fact that as accomplished a sabre-master as Dooku had not experienced this confrontation.
He clamped down thoughts that threatened to wander down directions he would much rather not explore just at that moment. Schen, now. Poor Schen. He recalled with perfect clarity that mud-mask look on her face as he had walked away. Schen was usually good at concealing her emotions, but Qui-Gon had been acquainted with her far too long to not know what she felt, and when she felt it. Over the years, their communication channels had remained open, as she liked to phrase it, even through all the upheavals in their respective lives. Good, reliable, stolid Schen. He was sorry that he had had to leave almost as soon as he had seen her, but to explain all that had happened would not be possible. Strange as it was, she had never seen Obi-Wan in person, until now, more than six years after his apprenticeship. Such a thing was not unheard of, though, if one had to spend endless cycles in the Outer Rim - and Schen had been reduced to seeing holo-pictures of the fourteen-year-old, when Qui-Gon remembered to send her any. Which was not often.
Knowing Schen, though, it would not be easy, keeping her at arm's length. And that presented the third problem. He had been delighted to know that she was coming - but padawan Muln's communication had put an end to any pleasure.
It seemed he was now caught at crossroads.
He tested the training bond he shared with Obi-Wan, pushing against it tentatively. It felt like a taut animal skin stretched across a drum: translucent, almost affording him a glimpse of what went on the other side, but still more than half concealed. On the one hand, it was comforting to know that Obi-Wan had not lost control over his shielding – his strength of will was innate, and had developed speedily. But it didn't appear that he would have hold over it much longer. He considered it briefly, stroking his beard as he sped up a long flight of stairs, the edges of his robe catching an initiate. Said initiate fell back a step and bowed to the master, who had fled past the staircase.
At last. He could see the broad, glistening doors ahead of him. Just as he reached the entrance, a sharp pain in his temple made him stop. He frowned, placing his palm on it.
It felt as though a sensitive nerve was twitching uncontrollably, and he knew the feeling: the training bond was quivering.
**************
A half-hour ago, the Temple Archives had been very quiet. As it was supposed to be.
Had Obi-Wan been asked to describe what he was feeling at that very instant, he would have been hard put to find the right words. His head felt as though stuffed with gerb-wool, yet his eyes seemed spectacularly clear, and it was as though he was seeing everything anew - as though he'd been blind all this time.
He was walking along the last corridor that led to the Temple Archives.
The way practically shone, as though the pathway had been limned with a curious, glittering metal. The Jedi he met on the way seemed to look back at him in slow-motion. He could almost read their minds - almost. The puzzlement in their eyes, the way they turned back to look at him, even though they'd walked past him. What was he, a curiosity? One Jedi had even touched his shoulder tentatively, before pulling his hand back.
Really, it was all rather ridiculous. Almost as ridiculous as Garen and Bant had looked, just before they had fallen under his mind-trick. He waved his hand before his eyes unsteadily, as he staggered towards the Archives. With every step, his mind seemed to clear, though his head still seemed to obey some strange rhythm of its own, as it throbbed with pain.
He must and would battle the Ischila, he vowed, as he flicked his fingers over the access panel. It was programmed to allow all Jedi in, after asking for a basic pass-code, so it opened without any fuss. Yes, he would battle it. And he would win it. And then he would wreck that wretched marble to see what in all Sithhells it contained, that it could torture him so much. And find out why Qui-Gon had been so insistent that he fight it, in the first place. Wretched little marble. Oh, how it ached.
His master could behave remarkably like a nerf-herder, on occasion. Perhaps this was one such. Mission: Torture Obi-Wan Kenobi. Defeat him, and fling him out of the Order. He had refused him so many time, six years ago -
no, no, he took me back, he took me back
- only after you were willing to blow yourself up for him -
he was what I'd always wished for
- wanted too much from you, Kenobi, too much and he would never believe in you - ...
"May I help you?" spoke a pleasant voice that somehow seemed to echo within his head and he looked up. The large room spun, and he grabbed a terminal, nearby, startling the Twi'lek padawan who was seated at it.
Ah. He'd seen this one, before. This towering blonde knight, who looked like a large gerb sheep with his huge blinking eyes. Just at the moment, he seemed to be mocking Obi-Wan.
May I help you
, indeed. He'd helped enough by giving Qui-Gon that marble. Well. He could give it to Obi-Wan too.
"Artifacts," Obi-Wan said. He seemed to be speaking clearly, but his words sounded garbled. No wonder Knight sheep-eyed Donan was looking at him askance. Not that he should be. Artifact-keepers must and should be keen and alert, ready to serve their fellow Jedi's needs.
It was rather appealing, this train of thought. He felt a sudden impulse to deliver a slap on Knight Donan's unsuspecting cheek, and restrained himself with difficulty. He must get to the Ischila. He must.
"Is there a specific artifact that you wished to inspect?" His sudden clarity of perception indicated that Knight Donan did not quite relish his query.
"I need the Ischila."
This time, there was no mistaking it - his eyes caught the subtle tightening of Knight Donan's lips, the eyes narrowing a fraction.
"I'm afraid that will require permission from your Master." His eye moved to Kenobi's braid.
A spike of impatience shot through him; Obi-Wan pushed past the large Knight, as he tried to move towards the separately maintained Artifact-section. "I only wish to see it." Just see it. How much difficult was it to just allow someone to see it? All he wanted was to
see
it.
"Padawan Kenobi, the Artifact section is off-limits without Master Jinn's express permission."
So. It was now the whole Artifacts Section that was off-limits, was it?
The Twi'lek padawan glanced warily in their direction again. One or two Knights, standing aside, obviously involved in some kind of research, looked at them too.
It had been so easy with Bant and Garen, he thought. Force, his shields were slipping.
Must not let Qui-Gon know. Must not
. He was probably chatting with his dear padawan - what was her name? Ah, yes, Schen. Dear Schen, who had probably been the best padawan in the Temple, had probably been the best with a sabre, and the best diplomat the Order had ever seen.
Something within him writhed and coiled. Nausea rose in him, and he swallowed, trying to center himself. Center. What was the meaning of it all? Finding one's center, indeed. He wanted the Ischila, and he would get it. The very thought felt soothing, as though the Force were wrapping cozy tendrils of light around him.
"You will let me have the Ischila." He waved his hand.
Knight Donan's lips parted, as though amazed that Obi-Wan would even attempt such a persuasion. "What-" he began, only to be silenced. Something seemed to be clutching his throat.
Stars, but it was so easy. It was even pleasant. Why had he never known this before? Dark clouds danced across Obi-Wan's eyes. Soothing. Soft. Rich, warm and inviting. Yes, this was it. He twisted his forefinger, watching Knight Donan's face twist in agony. A strange exhilaration coursed through him. He ignored the startled gasp from somewhere to his left. Knight Donan released a startled gasp, and Obi-Wan felt something inside him snap.
"Padawan..." Knight Donan rasped. "Do not...do this."
Obi-Wan
, called a voice within.
Obi-Wan, what are you doing? Release him
. Was it Qui-Gon? No, it wasn't. It didn't carry Qui-Gon's authoritative baritone, this voice.
Obi-Wan, no. Obi-Wan, nonono -
It was too much. Anger rose in him, sharp, red and without warning. Seething, he flipped his wrist, sending Knight Donan tumbling out of his way.
Knight Donan crashed into one of the terminal units. The Twi'lek padawan backed away, and two knights sprang into action...
Qui-Gon entered a moment later, to witness pandemonium along a scale the Jedi Temple Archives had not seen in centuries.

Whoa, Obi-Wan sounds like he's quite out of his head, possessed and very much using the darkside to stay that way. I can't picture Obi-Wan trying to hurt another Jedi at all so he's obviously in serious need of restraint.
Great job with this. I'm still on pins and needles trying to figure out where you are going. But, of course, the journey is just wonderful.
Bravo.

Oooh, your descriptions of Obi-Wan's slide toward the dark side are quite dellicious, if that's the right word. Something is leading Obi-Wan!

How very... well, delicious, as someone above said.
The darkness was extremely alarming, without a doubt. And the whole thing - I don't know. Alarming is the best word for it.
Well done!

Goodness. Alarming indeed. But I loved it, of course. And I doubt that Qui-Gon will be able to keep everything from Schen, which will undoubtedly lead to even more drama. *grins* I'd say more, but I'm a student and it's exam season...my apologies. Wonderful job, as usual, and I can't wait for more.
