Oh dear! Obi's gone off the deep end. I'm getting the chills reading about how that dark force seems to be weaving its threads into his mind and turning his own real insecurities against him.

And you've left us with a cliffie - ARGH!

Oh, the questions. The lovely, tormenting, wonderful, enigmatic questions.

Obi-Wan tried to force-choke a knight?! shock Clearly, he's not himself.

Qui shouldn't be surprised that this is affecting his padawan differently. Obi's a different person. ::resists urge to smack Qui up the side of the head for that--he's got his hands full right now anway::

II

Schen decided that she would let Qui-Gon guide her to where she wanted to be – which was, in essence, wherever he was.

If she wanted to be truthful to herself, it was ridiculous, this. Following her former master on business he obviously hesitated in confiding to her. It had been years since she had been free of the yoke of a student. She had a mission briefing in a few hours. She had endured a long, dusty journey from wastelands that had tried her emotionally and physically, and she needed every minute of rest that was granted to her. Her quarters, well maintained as they might be by service droids, still lacked her personal touch – Schen did not possess much taste in propping up the walls and shelves with various trinkets, nor had she gained as notoriety as Qui-Gon on her missions that those she aided pressed something of theirs into her hands. It was convenient, in a way, since the Order did not really approve of its Knights accumulating possessions with every mission, and Schen had never had a moment when she had regretted the rule. Possessions aside, there was a tiny liller plant that Qui-Gon had gifted years ago and which she still managed to raise, after a fashion. Horticulture was certainly not one of her strong points. She wondered vaguely if the plant had finally withered away, appalled at her absence, or had managed to struggle on, wringing moisture from every breath of re-ventilated air. She would just have to hope it did. One more reason for her to go back to her chambers and gather the threads of life in the Temple. She had not communicated to her agemates in a long while. She might visit one of the training salles. Or the Knights’ Common Rooms. Perhaps engage in some soothing meditation.

She gave a deep sigh, and probed the Force gently, tracing Qui-Gon’s path. It was … less complicated, thus. To ask the Temple’s monitoring systems would mean that her query would be recorded into the official system. She might chance her query about Knight Donan coming to anyone’s notice, but it would be difficult to answer Qui-Gon’s queries if he should come to know that she’d been tracking his movements.

She would try not to rouse his attention.

A sense of unease attacked her. Essentially she was spying on him. What took place between Master and Padawan was strictly speaking, not her business.

But so had she been, with Xanatos. Confident that Qui-Gon knew best. And then she’d been forced to watch him punish himself, too stricken to ask the help of others. Even her.

And he had been worried about this padawan of his too. She hadn’t missed that spike of apprehension at the hangar. Sharp indignation spread within her. She would protect her Master this time, from padawans who were ill suited to the Jedi way, and who did not value their teachers as they should. She would.

She marched away, in the direction of the Archives.

**********

Qui-Gon felt the assault of darker emotions moments before he stepped into the Archives. Someone was angry. Very angry. Far too angry for the Temple’s confines. It wasn’t a child’s uncontrolled anger, flashing out at being denied something, nor the numerous frustrations and irritations that bled away into the Force, the result of too many trying missions, team members, subordinates, or superiors. This was the kind of anger that sought to cause damage. Roiling, seething, and rapidly becoming more and more focused. And deliberate.

He murmured the pass-code and stepped within the doors that swished open … to see a gaggle of senior padawans, knights and one obviously frightened twi’Lek padawan grouped around someone. The darker forces almost drew him on as he approached them. His senses tingled, as though he was being touched by electricity.

It had taken him only moments to divine that the source of their intense interest must be Obi-wan.

Suddenly, someone crashed through a terminal to his left. His hand flew to his lightsabre instinctively. The Twi’lek padawan shrieked something incomprehensible, and two other knights extended their hands. Someone else raised his voice and said like “..there!” but he couldn’t be sure. Some other knight ignited his lightsabre too.

Apprehension raised its ugly head within him. Even if he had been expecting something of the kind for the past two days. He had been hoping that perhaps it wouldn’t…Obi-Wan was an exceptionally disciplined student, as a rule.

You’ve been careless, whispered a little voice within him.

The Archives was a large hall, with banks of terminals stretching away in long row, in the middle. Stacks of datacards and other instruments of knowledge traced the shelving along the walls, dimmed or brightly lit according to the needs of the user.

He watched, eyes widening, as the someone who had drawn a sabre raised it, as though to strike – only to be blocked by a blue sabre.

Obi-Wan … Obi-Wan.

Except that he could hardly see his self contained apprentice in the ravaged young man who stood in the middle of the group, waving a threatening lightsabre at them all. Somewhere further, Knight Donan was scrambling up, holding a large hand to his bloody nose. Good Force.

His call through the Force went unanswered.

There was a strange gleam in Obi-Wan’s eyes as he swayed a little, and then righted himself. His sabre arm was very steady. “Get it for me,” he was saying. His voice sounded broken and thready, almost a hissing whisper. His eyes darted around, focused one moment, strangely alien, the next. “Get the marble,” he said. Then he clutched his head. “Don’t you dare touch me!” he shrieked, when Knight Donan pushed past the group and tried to get to him.

The one who had wielded the sabre attempted a swing again … and this time, a green sabre stopped his path.

“Don’t,” came Qui-Gon’s clipped voice.

“Get away,” Obi-Wan hissed again. He pulled away his sabre as though he would hit at Qui-Gon with it, but then he hesitated, blinking. He staggered on his feet again, and the other knight stepped forward.

“Don’t,” Qui-Gon said again. “Please.” His obvious control checked the other, and he stepped back a pace, albeit very reluctantly. His eyes were puzzled and anxious, and there was a thin line of anger threading through his emotions.

“Obi-Wan,” Qui-Gon spoke gently. “Obi-Wan, deactivate your sabre.”

Obi-Wan shook his head slowly. “Want it,” he mumbled.

“What do you want?” hissed the Twi’lek padawan. Qui-Gon’s mind registered her presence with some surprise.

Obi-Wan’s eyes flashed. “That marble!” he shouted. “I want that … that Ischila!”

A shrill beep indicated that someone had activated their comm unit. Qui-Gon jerked his head, and discovered that it was Knight Donan. The green light flickered on his unit, and he raised it to mouth, preparatory to speak. Then, his eyes met Qui-Gon. Qui-Gon shook his head imperceptibly, trying to convince him with his eyes that he ought not to take such a step. Knight Donan lowered his hand.

And then, Obi-Wan swung his sabre into another terminal. It exploded into a shower of sparks. Lights flickered along the banks, and a few spluttered.

The other knight advanced again, and Qui-Gon pushed him back.

“Padawan,” he said, again gently. He felt the knight beside him straighten in surprise. “Obi-Wan, you may face the Ischila later. Not now. You are injured.”

“No,” Obi-Wan’s voice was laced with pain and regret. And anger. “I can’t.” he stumbled again, backing away against a row of datacards, thudding against them. His grip on his sabre seemed tenuous, and it swung in an unsteady arc towards them. “It won’t …” he groaned and turned his face away. “It won’t let me!”

“You must free yourself,” Qui-Gon insisted. He had been advancing steadily, marking progress very slowly. “You must, padawan.” His voice grew forceful, strong. He sent a wave of the Force with it. “Feel yourself grow stronger. You can. You must focus. Feel it move away from you.”

Obi-Wan’s eyes turned towards the sound of his voice. They were large, vacant, and stormy gray. “Mas …” he breathed unevenly. “Master?” he whispered. Emotions ebbed and flowed between them. His eyes hardened. "Sent me insane," he muttered. "Why ... do this to me? Why?" he shook his head again. "Punish me ... other ways." he groaned again. "Knew ... knew it would happen. Never wanted ... " he paused, and a lone tear rolled down a cheek. "Hate me," he whispered, finally.

Qui-Gon stopped, momentarily paralyzed. Slowly, he reached out a hand. "No, padawan." he said slowly. Something akin to understanding dawned within his consciousness. "I would not."

Thrumming energy seemed to be playing havoc with his apprentice’s mind. His grip on his sabre grew tighter. He jerked his head, as though listening to something very far away. “Can’t…” he mumbled. He sagged against the shelves. “I mustn’t …”

Qui-Gon was almost within arm’s reach now. “Drop your sabre, Obi-Wan,” he said in a low voice, his keen eyes careful to hold Obi-Wan’s. He was approaching him, rather like a man sidling up to a wounded animal. “You needn’t fear anything. I am here with you. Drive away the fear. Breathe deeply, now…”

Obi-Wan scrubbed the back of his free hand against his face urgently, as though desperately trying to gain his sight. He groaned again, a tortured sound tearing from his throat. His hair, no longer in any semblance of order, now sprung up in all directions. His skin looked grey, and spot of colour flew in his cheeks. His tunics and leggings looked crumpled and dirty, even wet. He clutched his head, his sabre arm lowering a little.

“You are a Jedi, Obi-Wan.”

The words seemed to be the signal for the next outpouring of raw energy. Obi-Wan flung out a hand. Datachips shot out of the next shelf, and sent the knight who had been stealthily following Qui-Gon crashing into the depths of an alcove. Qui-Gon dropped all pretense of a slow approach and swiftly crossed the last step. His green sabre rose to meet the blue and he struck down, hard. “Obi-Wan!” he barked, putting all the force of his considerable authority in it. “Disarm, padawan!”

The blue sabre would not give away. He struck at it again, and had the satisfaction of seeing it fly and away and land on the floor, still thrumming. He barely had time to deactivate his own, when Obi-Wan lunged at him, mumbling something indistinctly. He grappled with the young man, trying to pin him down. Obi-Wan struggling underneath him mightily, twisting away like a flailing sabre-cat. His eyes were darting about in a frenzy again and he managed to land in a few punches that would cause Qui-Gon a good deal of soreness, the Master knew. He escaped a blow to his jaw and slapped away clawing fingers.

There was a distant murmur of sound, in the background. Someone yelled something; there were other voices clamouring for attention. At one point, he heard the word “…Council!” quite distinctly, and experienced a brief moment of regret.

Unexpectedly, he felt someone come to his aid. Someone else brushed towards his side, caught the flailing arms and pinned them forcibly. He cast he/she/whoever it was a grateful thought, and caught the legs. Obi-Wan stopped thrashing wildly, and grasped at the other’s hair. The knight wrenched her head out of his grasp. Then he abruptly drew away. He threw himself at Qui-Gon again, who was prepared for this. The Master pinned his legs to the floor, bound his arms to his torso and made sure he couldn’t move an inch. Not that this stopped him from struggling. He bucked and thrashed, clutching at the immense grip that held him. But he could do nothing else.

Qui-Gon now had the time to glance up at the knight. He was not really surprised to see that it was Schen. A strange feeling of disquiet possessed him, though. She had not waited for him to come to her. He looked up at her, not quite certain as to what he wanted to see in her eyes.

“Well,” he breathed, ignoring the commotion around him, and trying to smile at her, as she stood above, hands on her waist. She was blinking down at Obi-Wan, who was staring at her, wild-eyed, panting. Her face was pinched and drawn. Her shields, Qui-Gon noticed, were impeccable. Not so Obi-Wan’s. He was radiating thwarted anger and a sort of sick, blinding wave of pain.

Force, but this was going to be … difficult.

Schen raised her head dully, as though suddenly very tired. “Is this …?” she gestured towards the young man still in Qui-Gon’s grip.

Qui-Gon looked down at the bloodshot eyes, and perspiring face. A sudden wave of pity and remorse seized him. Within himself, something bubbled up, a torrent of affection for this tortured, suffering boy. “Yes,” he said softly, a finger caressing Obi-Wan's cheek. “This is my padawan. Obi-Wan Kenobi.”

Schen's eyes noted the gesture. She looked down again at the straining body, her posture strangely calm. “I see.”

Then she stooped, raised her hand, and dealt Obi-Wan a resounding slap across the cheek.

Obi-Wan looked back at her, his eyes wide. The next instant, Qui-Gon felt him go limp under his restraining hands.

At long last, the Temple Archives was completely silent.

I stopped breathing through that whole sequence. Loved that you wrote it in such a way that Qui-Gon's perceptions of his surroundings were disjointed, as if he couldn't identify the people trying to get to Obi-Wan because he was so focused on stopping his apprentice.

Loved, loved, loved that Obi-Wan thought Qui-Gon had done this to him, this madness. My heart was breaking with this:

"Sent me insane," he muttered. "Why ... do this to me? Why?" he shook his head again. "Punish me ... other ways." he groaned again. "Knew ... knew it would happen. Never wanted ... " he paused, and a lone tear rolled down a cheek. "Hate me," he whispered, finally.

That he would think such a thing shows how far down he's been pushed into confusion and hate. I don't know how you are going to get him out of this but it's been a wild ride so far.

Loved that Schen was really reacting to her own fears that Obi-Wan was another Xan. The slap was as much for her as for him.

Am waiting breathlessly for the next part.

I think I have quite a few reader replies to catch up with. Thanks a ton, you guys. hugs

From the previous, previous update:

dianethx:
I'm going to kill Qui-Gon. That was not what he should be doing to his first apprentice - putting her off yet again, like he did with Xan. I think she's well within her rights to call him on it. That he would put some distance between them seems odd and very sad. Kick his butt, kid. He deserves it.

<grin> Wow. I must say, I didn't expect you to want to kill Qui-Gon. grin He does know what she must think, though, and in fairness to him, he's probably not too keen on her seeing Obi-Wan the way he is. Actually, she has, now. Seen him at his worst. And she's gone and kicked his butt. worried No doubt, she's going to go through some upheaval ...

Thanks, m'lady. Your reviews always make my day.

Ara-gon:
I love Schen. She's so human, with the ability to feel hurt, resentment, and jealousy but also the maturity to see beyond those feeling and care about others more than herself.

She's quite a human being, is Schen. I was very wary of making her a Mary Sue - and Schen certainly is the average Jedi Knight. Of course, Qui-Gon trained her first ... and she had her merits. She knows enough of herself to understand her limitations, and fortunately just a little ego to resent being brushed away.

Thanks so much!

DarthMousche: Ah, Mousche. Thanks for the wonderful review. No matter if you haven't replied before - this one makes up for everything. grin

Yikes - things are not good if Obi-Wan is using the ol' Jedi mind trick on his friends. What is this Ischila doing to him? I so hope that this is part of the test and that he can overcome it eventually.

Eventually is quite a while away. grin He has to overcome some very important weaknesses, first. And understand a fact about him that he hasn't until now. That revelation will undermine him. Temporarily, at least. That's what the Ischila is best at. Making a private contest a public one.

And Schen is just coming to life in your capable hands. I've always wondered about Qui-Gon's "missing" Padawan, and she fills the void perfectly, with just the right blend of affection, protectiveness and justifiable resentment. I so wish that Qui-Gon would allow himself to be closer to her.

So do I. I'm so glad you like Schen. I'm always wary of portraying OCs. And in this instance, she had to fit, too.

But do you know ... personally, I rather tend towards the fact that Qui-Gon's first apprentice was Xan, and there was no one before that. shock I don’t know why I feel that. In this fic, though, I feel Schen has a most important part to play. There are certain things she needs to learn too.

I am just incredibly, insanely jealous of your storytelling ability, but I am incredibly, insanely ecstatic that I get to enjoy the results of it.

All I can say is that I'm incredibly, insanely lucky to get a review like that. blush I started this thing purely as a whim ... and it feels great. Thanks so much.

7, paddy-mine: I think I must knight you soon - you're certainly a storyteller in your own right. grin Obi might say he's sorry. He's a gentleman, you know. I'll make sure he does. But he doesn't really know what he's doing, so excuse him, will you?

grin Thanks, little one.

maychorian:
I really like Schen. She's a true, believable, very likable character.

Yay! That, from the creator of Julune! Thank you! grin I'm glad Schen has passed the test.

Lol, yes, It would be Bant who understood what was going on, first. I always credit her with much more sense.

Dragonlady: Thanks, m'dear. happy

Though Qui-Gon isn't showing much good sense at the moment...his desire to go alone is understandable, but under the current circumstances pushing Schen away is going to do more harm than good to Obi-Wan as well as Qui-Gon himself (especially since the Obi-Wan she'll be meeting won't be at his best).

Qui-Gon is actually trying to make the best of it. He had no idea Schen would land up suddenly, and his instinct to meet her is warring with his concern for Obi-Wan... and he decides to make a compromise, of sorts. Needless to say, Schen meets Obi-Wan at his worst. But no one had any way of knowing that, of course.

TheLurker: Lol, I update '...Thumbs', but I'm afraid I haven't made any kind of schedule for it. I must though. I'm so glad you tracked all the way from over there. Hope you keep reading! Thanks.

Just_Jill: I figured Garen would call Master Jinn. He's a responsible boy, is Garen. Mostly. wink He's also motivated by the fear that something's seriously wrong with Obi-Wan.

But I have to disagree with others - this is between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon. I'm not sure what Shen thinks she's going to do, but it will be interesting, without a doubt.

It's so interesting, wtaching differing viewpoints. As for what SChen will do - she's already done it. happy The repercussions will follow.

Thanks for reading!

Star_Drifter: <smells lovely roses> Thank you! For the review too. happy

No, Schen's not going to subit meekly, this time. She's getting all fired up, actually.

And the Ischila is messing with Obi's head. grin

Sarabi: He really is trying. He still hasn't hit upon the perfect method. It's somewhere ...elusive. wink But he will, soon.

Thanks.

PadawanKitara: Glad you think so, PK. THanks. happy

Jedi_Tigris: Lol, she's caused quite enough problems - inadvertantly. Not that tey're really sure of anything at this moment. It all seems pretty confusing. They'll have to discuss things soon.

Thanks!

Fifilla: Lol, updated. Thank you. happy

River_Stone: <is hypnotized by cookies> Not that I wrote because of those cookies...cookies, yummmm... eh, what? hypnotized

Yes, Qui-Gon's first padawan is learning. Still. She's not very happy about it - mor elike puzzled and horrified. History seems to be repeating itself. Imagine what she must be going through.

As always, your reviews are marvelous, my dear. They keep me going. I hope you'll drop in soon. Haven't seen you for ages, and I miss you.

From the previous update: dianethx, Fifilla, Master_Noi, May, Just_Jill, Dragonlady, PK, Mousche, raisedbywolves, dimyavie,Ara-gon,nickenobi-nz ...

Yep, Obi-Wan's gone off the deep end. Listening to voices, crashing through Teriminals... hmm. Trouble, the boy is in. And he'll be so, for some time.

Thanks, all!

I'm going to ask a favour - a tiny one. I haven't taken time over pms in the past, but now, I've begun to organize myself about sending updates (notably 'Stones'). So, if anyone wants to be sent pms, you have but to ask. batting

That is all. grin

I think this was the first story I read written by you, and I promptly fell in love with it. I absolutely enjoyed the banter between Qui-Gon and Obi-wan. Although this chapter doesn't have it, it makes up for quite a lot of under-currents. Schen's fear of Obi-wan as the next Xanatos, Qui-Gon's close-mouthedness, his fears, then there's Obi-wan's very odd behavior. Reminds me of the powder keg that's just about to explode.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing where you go with Obi-Wan's mental problems and how you are going to get him out of it. I wonder that he won't blame Qui-Gon for putting him in the situation in the first place. Once he's sane again.
