Wow Master, you really where inspired! shock grin love

This was wonderful! It makes me want to go write more! ~ahem~ I mean...

Master Jinn is in no way going to be happy. Though he may be a triffle relieved that Obi has found some rest.

But I'm glad to see that Obi is at least a little happy again.

Good on Bant and Garen!

Again, Master, this is simply more wonderful than my vocabulary can expresss.

More soon please, Master?

Your Devoted Lil' Paddy,
Seven

I adored the description of the statue and how it seemed to have a message meant only for Obi-Wan. That was slightly creepy, but so very well done. I can't wait to find out how Garen (and I'll assume Bant) know about the Ischila.

So very glad to see you back to this story. More soon? grin

Obi-Wan should not be wandering the Temple, especially after Qui-Gon specifically told him not to. Plus he is disturbingly restless, not concentrating on his task - a side reaction to the Ischila perhaps?? His thoughts about his first encounter with Qui-Gon are also disturbing...

of a certain Jedi Master who had once told him to rein in his anger.

He closed his eyes briefly, feeling a prick of emotion. It had been so long ago—

Six years, a small voice whispered inside him. Not so long ago.

Is the Ischila still affecting him?

I loved your description of the Crystal Room. I could picture it all so clearly in my head - I want to see it for myself! grin

And your inclusion of Obi-Wan's thoughts about the Jedi's destruction from within was cool!

But even when he is clowning around with his friends, Obi-Wan seems a bit preoccupied. He needs to regain his center, especially if he is to go back to encounter the Ischila again.

Great job. Keep going!

Qui-Gon's not going to be happy when he finds out Obi-Wan is out against his orders, but Obi seems more relaxed with his friends. happy I love the description of the Crystal room. It sounds really beautiful, and peaceful. The way the statue of the "mad Jedi" seems to call to Obi-Wan was kinda creepy, forshadowing I guess. plain I wonder if Garen (and Bant) knows about the Ischila? thinking

Yay! Wonderful post!

Ooh. I just found this, and it's very very good! Like everyone else, I'm bowled over by the good dialogue and the clever mystery. How long have you been speaking and writing English?

I too liked the bust of the mad Jedi, and how fascinating it was to Obi-Wan, very nice foreshadowing of things to come!

I had started to read this earlier, but lost track of it somehow.

Princess_A this is a beautiful story! I love the interaction between Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan.

The Ischila is particularly intriguing. Is Obi-Wan to face it until he can 'defeat' it?

Lovely scene between Obi-Wan, Bant and Garen. And I think that I saw this question asked in a previous reply... but just how does Garen know about the Ischila? It hardly seems like something that is to be gossiped about.

Fantastic! Eagerly awaiting the next twist in the plot.

The ways of ancient Archivists could not be questioned. Can’t you just picture the archivists snapping at an unsuspecting little padawan? Do not question me, invidel! RAWR! skull

Quetrili the Mad has a decidedly Harry-Potter-type ring about it. Whee…

Awww, Bant and Garen! I wonder how long it’s been since they’ve all been together, for a change… Hehe, Obi-Wan, you ought to know better by now than to approach a swimming friend in dry clothes! Of course she’s going to push you in, I mean, we’d all do the same given half a chance. tongue

Also, forgive me for being thick or naïve, but pray tell, what is a golle? confused And is it something like a goose?

Apparently, the Nelth V mission was not one to be savored. Tee-hee. This ficcy is so entertaining! If you don’t update as soon as you’re able, I’ll be crushed.

I love this story!! You write beautifully. I like the comfortable interaction between Qui and Obi. It seems like some tension came in in the last posts though. worried Is Obi trying to avoid Schen?

I'm dying to see how Obi-Wan defeats the Ischila. And maybe he will learn something that will help him later with Anakin facing the dark? Although I'm not anxious for him to land in the hospital again. sad He's a brave guy though. I'm sure he's willing to try again.

More please?! praying

Part 10

II

The gentle lapping of waves against the shores of the Crystal Lake were the only sounds to be heard, for a while.

Obi-Wan stared down into his friends’ faces. Garen’s eyes were quizzical but steadfast; Bant looked away from him for a moment, and then turned to look at him again; curiosity and concern battling for supremacy.

Crystal blossoms floated towards them; Obi-Wan bent down and scooped up a few from the waters, rolling the dazzling buds in his fingers. “The Jewel…?” He asked in a conversational tone.

“The Jewel.” Garen spoke, not allowing Obi-Wan to look away, his expression indicating that his clan-mate must continue speaking. He brought his arms forward and placed his chin on them, as though preparing for a long and involved explanation.

Obi-Wan frowned. “How in Coruscant did you get to know?”

“He doesn’t deny it,” murmured Bant, as she rolled over in the water.

“No, he doesn’t,” concurred Garen.

They continued looking at Obi-Wan, their manner strangely resembling a visitor staring at a mutated gundark at the Coruscant Extra-terrestrial Animal Park.

“Good grief,” Obi-Wan murmured. “Is nothing sacred in the Temple, anymore?”

“The whole Temple’s sacred, as the ancient Masters would say,” Garen answered lazily. “And now, you’ll give up these evasive tactics and talk—unless you don’t want to, and we’ll leave.” He threw a keen glance at Obi-Wan, who seemed oblivious of his wet and clinging tunics. “You can talk, can’t you?”

“I can,” was Obi-Wan’s dry remark. “I don’t know if I may.”

“And there speaks the perfect Basic learner,” Garen shook his head. “There’s no reason to resent our curiosity, Obi. These things are difficult to conceal…I imagine half the padawans know, by now, and a good many among the Masters.”

Obi-Wan looked mildly stunned. “Half the…but how?” He demanded. “I’m sure Qui-Gon wouldn’t have told—and the Council…” He stopped.

Garen raised an elegant eye-brow, nothing the first name usage—Obi-Wan had never referred to his Master by anything but his title, before. “The Council?” He sat up in the water, interested. “The Council knows…?”

Obi-Wan stared at him, in turn. “So you don’t know it all,” he murmured."Why don't we talk about your missions, for a while?" He put forth.

Garen shook his head slowly, grinning. indicating clearly that they would not.“You may ask the Assistant Archivist about it, if you will, Obi-Wan. She informed her Master about the...Ischila, is it? And in any case, you can hardly blame her—a confrontation of this kind is like the Fast of Solitude…it’s noted in the Temple’s Record of Accomplishments. They can’t conduct a public enquiry, of course, but they’d dearly love to know how it goes. It’s something of a phenomenon, supposedly.” Garen made a wry face. “I’ve been accosted five times since I landed here, asked discreetly if I knew anything about your latest.”

“I didn’t know it could be public knowledge.”

“It’s not a secret, either.” Garen trained his eyes on him. “Besides, isn’t public scrutiny half the test?”

Obi-Wan was silent.

“We understand if you don’t want to talk about it,” pronounced Bant, though curiosity edged her voice. After a pause, she continued. “We didn’t know it involved the Council—I rather believed it was Master Qui-Gon’s idea. He’s known to be—” She stopped abruptly.

“Unorthodox, yes,” Obi-Wan smiled faintly. “But even he can’t approve such a thing, without the Council’s consent.”

They sat silent, each occupied with their own thoughts.

“What does everyone say?” Obi-Wan asked, finally.

A smile touched Garen’s eyes. He and Bant chuckled, and as Garen opened his mouth to answer, the sound of voices floated in.

“…don’t think he could,” said a clear, ringing voice. Steps sounded as boots stomped across the grass; they were hidden by the mass of ferns and bushes that ringed the lake’s shores.

“You don’t know the half of it. He’s the best in Level 30 sabre-skills,” countered another, shriller voice. “He’s the legendary Qui-Gon Jinn’s padawan, after all.”

Obi-Wan was amazed; Garen quirked his lips, and shrugged. Bant merely looked amused.

“If I were a Corellian spice-smuggler, I’d bet my fortune he doesn’t win the confrontation.”

“What’s stopping you?” asked a third voice; they were becoming steadily louder.

“A Jedi gambles not.”

“You gadzielle, you,” came a hoarse voice. “You’d lose your Jedi robes if you did, and that’s the real reason you won’t.” Loud chuckles ensued.

Obi-Wan stiffened, and leaned towards Garen to ask a question.

“At any rate, he shouldn’t have trouble defeating that marble. They say it requires dark powers, you know.” The voice lowered. “He’s already killed Bruck, and Force knows what happened on Telos.”

They froze, as a deep, uncomfortable silence settled in. A chill breeze, wafted by the room’s artificial ventilating system, brushed through the foliage.

Finally, the clear voice spoke up, hesitant. “Bruck’s death was an accident.”

“Aalto will tell you differently.”

Obi-Wan’s fingers curled into themselves.

“The Council ruled—”

“The Council doesn’t know half of what goes on the Temple,” cut in the hoarse voice. “I never did understand why Master Jinn retained Kenobi as his padawan, after all that happened. Must be something in it, don’t you think?”

Obi-Wan looked up, sharply - too sharply, for his muscles protested at once, and he stilled.

Beside Obi-Wan, Garen slowly unwound himself from the water, stretching out to his full length, water dripping from his tunics. Obi-Wan wondered, vaguely, if Garen equalled Qui-Gon’s height, or was close to doing so. Before he could finish the thought, his friend had sloshed beyond the lake’s shores, and had crossed the foliage.

“We would appreciate it if you confined your remarks to your own activities, in future, and refrained from commenting about your betters,” came his smooth voice. Garen could sound remarkably aristocratic, Obi-Wan had noticed, when he chose.

Bant rose hurriedly, and Obi-Wan rose too, it must be said, reluctantly, to join his friend.

The voices had quietened at the first instance pf Garen’s arrival, and as Obi-Wan turned around a particularly luxuriant growth of Ariyde grasses, he encountered a group of six padawans—mid-level apprentices, by the looks of it. They wore the simpler version of padawan tunics, with no tabards, and their padawan braids only barely touched their shoulders.

Across them, dressed in full Jedi regalia—wet, though, they were—Garen appeared almost a full-fledged knight, save for his own braid.

The group rose slowly, confusion and apprehension spreading over the faces of two or three of them. One looked positively frightened; one rose last, defiance clear in his eyes.

Garen folded his arms over his chest, his stance not really threatening, but not calculated to be comforting, either. “Well?” he asked, in a deceptively serene voice. “You appeared to have something to say about senior padawan Kenobi’s apprenticeship.” He gestured towards Obi-Wan, who had quietly approached, to his right. “He’s here." A gasp followed this announcement. "Would you care to address your comments to him?”

Almost unconsciously, Obi-Wan folded his arms as well. He had shrugged on his cloak over his tunics; it occurred to Bant, as she stood slightly behind them, that he looked slightly forbidding.

No answer came from the group, which frankly looked as though they wished they were elsewhere.

“Padawan Muln,” the one with the clear voice spoke up—a boy with spiky blonde hair, and green eyes. “I—we…didn’t know you were here,” he finished haltingly.

Garen raised one eye-brow. So, this group were aware of his identity. “You would have spoken what you did, had you known we weren’t?” he softened his voice slightly as he spoke, remembering that this one had defended Obi-Wan, rather.

The shrill-voiced apprentice spoke up, next. Bant noted idly that it was a young Ithirian, with a classic ridged nose and three dots on her forehead. “No, it wasn’t like that.” She directed a sharp look at the blonde boy. “We’re sorry, padawan Kenobi,” She spoke directly to Obi-Wan, and Garen had to marvel at her courage.

The hoarse-voiced padawan mumbled something intelligible, earning a sharp dig from the Ithirian.

Garen threw a look at the defiant padawan, as he spoke. “Have you been permitted by your Masters to come to the Crystal Lake? Those under sixteen cycles are not allowed, you ought to know that.”

Behind Garen, Bant widened her eyes at Obi-Wan, who looked expressionless.

“We didn’t know that,” as expected, the blonde boy spoke up, apologetic. He seemed to be the leader of the small group, and genuinely worried at the transgression. “We’ll leave, then.” He bowed in the general direction of Garen and Obi-Wan.

“The next time, think before you throw accusations without knowing the facts behind them,” Garen spoke. “You’re training to be Jedi knights, not Corellian spice smugglers.” The group had the grace to blush; the defiant boy turned a fiery red. Obi-Wan opened his mouth as though to speak, then closed it.

The defiant apprentice looked back, as the group began to move away. “Who killed Bruck, then?”

Garen’s voice lost what little expression it had held; it seemed he had come to the end of his patience. Bant took a look at him, and stepped up. “Your name?”

The defiant padawan considered her, clearly wondering if he should accede to her request.

Bant drew herself to her full height, silver eyes glinting. “I believe I asked your name,” she continued, softly.

“Brand,” he said, finally. “Empatojayos Brand.”

“Well, padawan Brand,” spoke Bant, emphasizing his title. “And your Master?”

Padawan Brand drew himself to his full height as well. “I am apprenticed to Master Yoda.”

Obi-Wan drew a deep breath. That explained the defiance. He shook his head slightly. It did not, however, explain the arrogance. He pinched the bridge of his nose, trying to ease a headache that had erupted out of nowhere.

“Impressive,” spoke Bant, in an expressionless voice. “You will go to your Master, explain what happened here, and ask him to give you the circumstances surrounding Bruck’s death.”

Padawan Brand blanched, while the other members of the group looked horrified.

“I—I can’t do that,” he said, finally.

“I’m afraid you don’t have a choice,” Garen cut in, smoothly. “Such rampant curiosity has to be taken care of. Either you will do senior padawan Eerin’s bidding yourself, and or I shall do it for you.” He looked at a visibly pale Brand pleasantly. “Which is it to be?”

Brand’s face was cast down, and he seemed to have some difficulty speaking. “I’ll do it myself.”

“Excellent.” Garen turned away. “I shall be sure to ask Master Yoda about it.” He almost smiled as the group fell over itself, bowing, and scuttled away. Brand, to be sure, threw a last defiant look at Obi-Wan, and was wise enough not to attempt to speak.

He turned to Obi-Wan. “Well, that wasn’t quite so—”

Abruptly Obi-Wan lost his balance; he swayed unsteadily, one hand held to the side of his head. Garen caught him swiftly, wrapping his arms around his waist. “What is it? Obi-Wan?”

His clan-mate looked much too pale for comfort. Garen lowered him to the ground, watching Obi-Wan try to orient himself, as Bant placed a hand on his forehead.

“I’m all right,” he murmured. “I’m all right.” He was breathing heavily, grey eyes unfocused.

“I don’t think so,” was Bant’s low response, as she briskly straightened him on the ground, despite all his attempts to stop her. “Stay still. Now.”

“Why…?” Obi-Wan asked, his slender hand weaving unsteadily against Garen’s face.

“Why what? Obi-Wan, are you ill? You haven’t walked in, escaping from the healer’s ward, have you?”

“I told you, I’m all right.” Grey eyes cleared until they regained some clarity, and Obi-Wan pushed himself to a sitting position.

“None of that; lie down, for a moment,” Bant intercepted, pulling at his shoulders.

“Hasn’t anyone forgotten….him, yet?” Obi-Wan asked, half-sitting, half lying down. His eyes seemed much too bright.

Garen looked away for a moment, unable to meet his gaze. “That isn’t it.”

“How many more times are they going to fling this into my face?” Obi-Wan fought to sit up; Garen was steadily gaining ground.

“You have a fever, I think.” Garen touched Obi-Wan’s neck. “And you’ve been wallowing in the Crystal Lake…Force, you gadzielle, why didn’t you tell us…?”

“I don’t have a fever.” Qui-Gon will strangle me for this. “Garen, those padawans are almost mid-level apprentices.” And they know…

“Obi-Wan, our adventures are part of the Temple annals, as much as our Masters’ were,” Garen spoke in a soothing tone as he tried to wrap Bant’s cloak, the only one among theirs which was reasonably dry, around Obi-Wan. “Besides, the Ischila has brought everything to the fore. One more reason to talk about you, padawan extraordinaire,” he finished, in a deliberately light tone.

“How do you feel, now?” Bant asked, her tone utterly professional.

Obi-Wan stared at her for a moment, as though looking at her for the first time. “Head,” he murmured, putting up a hand to it; he winced. “Why haven’t they forgotten Bruck yet?” I’d almost forgotten about Xanatos.

Garen seemed to come to a decision. “Is Master Qui-Gon at your quarters?”

Obi-Wan sat up abruptly, brushing away Garen’s considerably strong grasp. “Don’t you start treating me like a junior padawan, too,” he spat. “My Master is…” he stopped abruptly. Schen. He has gone to escort Schen to our quarters.

Schen, who would expect to claim an acquaintance with him, her Master’s third apprentice. Schen, who had probably been a much better apprentice than he was. What would she think about his blatant disobedience?

“…return to your quarters, before battling the Ischila,” Bant was saying, but her words floated out to him, strangely disembodied.

Obi-Wan looked at her, frowning. “You don’t think I can win against it, do you?” he asked, slowly. “Have you been placing bets too, like Corellian spice-smugglers?”

Garen looked at him in surprise; he and Bant traded swift looks at each other. “All right, up you get. I’m sure Master Qui-Gon’s worried—”

“Enough!” He struggled to his feet as the Crystal Lake spun around him in dizzy slow-motion. He shook his head and then gave up, as this only seemed to make things worse. What is happening to me?

“Obi, listen, you golle. That isn’t it at all.” Garen caught his hand. “Come to your senses, now. We’re not…”

“Are you insinuating that I’m out of my senses?” He’s right. I am out of my senses.

“Blast you, yes!” Garen retorted, finally losing his patience. “If I’d known you weren’t well—”

Obi-Wan drew a deep, shuddering breath, holding both palms to his head, trying in vain to ignore the rancor that appeared to have taken permanent residence there, and was now hacking into his skull. “Enough,” he spoke, his voice shaking. “Enough.”

“Obi-Wan…back!” Bant’s voice sounded far away, as he took a few brisk steps, almost stumbled in the process, and finally left the Crystal Lake Room.

Wow, that was heavy. Poor Obi-Wan. He still blames himself for Bruck.

I loved how Garen moved to defend his friend, though. And the younger Padawans were intriguing, in their way. You have a gift for drawing different characters swiftly and well.

Yep, Qui-Gon's going to be ticked. Obi definitely should not be out of bed, much less gamboling in the water!

Looking forward to more!
